North Korea with a missile ready hydrogen bomb? OMG.
With that in mind this hardly seems like the time for the US to walk away from its trade deal with South Korea. However, in an odd way this could develop favorably: if the US relationship with South Korea seems rocky China might see a diplomatic opportunity to woo South Korea by reining in North Korea.
Obviously the US pays a price worldwide for being seen as an unreliable ally. But suppose a few years from now China has engineered a military coup in North Korea and seen to their denuclearization, thereby forging a much tighter bond with South Korea. Is the US better off? Is the world better off?
Metaphorically this is a bishop sacrifice in chess - its wisdom depends very much in the specific board position and the opportunities in subsequent play. Not to mention the skill of the players, and I am sure there are many who would not be in a hurry to bet on Trump and TREx in a match agasint the Chinese.
What frightening news to wake up to.

Second.
-peter,
Did one half against Oyster Bay and we beat they 7-6, played to nil-nil draw 2nd half against E. Rockaway. Frederick got in for a bout 10 plays as wide receiver against E. Rockaway. Roslyn was other team of the 4 but our guys looked damn good for being seeded 14 in Division 4.
We only go as far as Port Jeff this year. We only play Nassau schools pre-season.
Posted by: Jim Eagle | September 03, 2017 at 10:59 AM
It's frightening, yes, but all the U.S. can do about it is exactly what we've done in the past, i.e. nothing. Kim will have to attack somewhere (and it seems his only real target is the United States) before we'll retaliate. If we act first, most of the rest of the world will consider it an unprovoked and unjustified attack and, as much as we'd like to ignore what the world thinks of us, we need allies for trade and political stability. Kim is a smart mofo, but so is Trump - his recent "fire and fury" comments were exactly right despite the caterwauling from both sides of the aisle. Still, we're stuck - there's no route to engineering a coup, the military's hands are necessarily tied. The only solution I can think of (besides waiting for Kim to actually strike somewhere) would be to convince China that it's fine with us if they occupy NK after Kim's regime falls, but that would require China to give a damn, which they don't seem to.

Say what you will about McCain and Romney, but at least they never went on a post-election-loss book tour complaining about why they lost. Even Al Gore reinvented himself as an expert in climatology. Yet this "strong feminist icon" continues to play the victim.

The problem with interception is that it's far from foolproof, which is probably why we didn't try to shoot down the recent missile they lobbed over Japan. Much, much better to ignore that missile than possibly demonstrate a military weakness.

From the last thread;
I thought moderates did nuance, Appalled.
In my cosmology there are many colors of the rainbow; just look at my avatar.
Many "liberals" of the Scoop Jackson variety have recognized to lack of effective stops on their ideology and have modified or jettisoned it to the point it is no longer an ideology.
Then there is the sea of moderates like you who may be vaguely aware of and even slightly uneasy with the intellectual and moral relationship that social liberalism, Marxism, Fabian Socialism and all the rest of the leftwing isms share but who choose to ignore in the unwise and unfounded belief there is some mythical stopping point that prevents the two lines converging.
Millions more drifting in the liberal doldrums have no clue what the roots of their beliefs are; only that all the "smart" people they know believe the same thing and also that they feel really bad for poor people and the rich are mean and greedy and everyone who is rich is someone who makes one dollar more than they do; until they get a raise then the borderline ratchets up commensurately.
The liars actually tend to be the self aware leftists like Pelosi et al who conceal, poorly, their totalitarian temptations behind jaw-jaw.
So I of course don't think you're dishonest at all, Appalled. You have always been scrupulously honest, IMO. You come by your doofusheadedness honestly and above-board.

The cab driver remarked 'Steely Dan - they had the stupidest lyric I ever heard in any song that ever has been written.' Becker replied 'You're kidding - what was that?' The cab driver responded with 'Is there gas in the car? Yes, there's gas in the car.'

Exactly why I would probably stay with my home.
I met a retired fire hero who was in the business of buying and selling classic cars and parts. He gloated about his success in finding vehicles that no one else knew about.
He would essentially case the properties that they responded to for emergency calls. Then, days after the event, he would go knock on the door wearing his "I Am A Hero!!" t-shirt and identify himself as one of the team of heroes that desperately tried to save the spouse's life.
After some tears were shed and he had received all of the praise that he deserved, he would then ask, "so, what is going to happen to George's Mustang? I'm looking for a project to do with my kid."
He said it worked like a charm.

Walter Becker of Steeley Dan died.
Yesterday on the crossing from Taipei to Anchorage was fooling around with the ADF (equivalent of AM radio receivers) and abeam Hokkaido picked up a very strong Japanese AM station from Sapporo, channel 567. A Japanese announcer was playing Steeley Dan tunes. We were surprised, but the signal came in very strong and we had it with very little static until about 800 miles away and approaching abeam Petropavlovsk.
The announcer would play 2 tunes, then chat for about 3 or 4 minutes in Japanese about something, then 2 more tunes, then chat again, and he did this until the top of the Hour when they did their NPR style news break in Japanese and we lost the signal to static. We didn't know why there were doing it but were very appreciative as it helped break the monotony and did a good job of jolting us awake. I guess now they must have been doing it in honor of Walter Becker's passing.
I assume FM Radio will got clobbered with an EMP event. Anyone know how AM Radio would be affected?

Yes, it does.
I recommend reviewing Sundance's writings on this The Conservative Treehouse over the last week or so.
The latest statement from Russia and China seems to indicate they are being prodded to re-start the 6-party talks.
The one fly in the ointment, and on this I am only hazarding a guess, is if the Iranians are involved in the Norks making such fast progress. It seems likely to me that they may have taken all of that money and outsourced (and sent their scientists) to North Korea, where they think they can progress without prying Israeli eyes.

There was a point in the third quarter when Francois somehow gunned it through the arms of a Tide LB for a completion when Herbie and the play by play guy were talking about what a tight window he had and I was thinking "he was really lucky that wasn't picked". Mattis's statement indicates to me that the US will continue to pursue diplomatic means. He referenced the UN Security Council, and said the US could respond massively to the threat (in other words, no demand that Kim stand down immediately and open up North Korean nuclear facilities to international inspection). I think Mattis is reminding China as well as North Korea that the previous US policy of talking tough and then propping up the regime has ended. But I didn't sense a threat of an imminent US attack coming.

Frau, I had on the Fox live feed this morning and I first heard a few guys, like Ed Rollins, who were supportive of the president.
Then all of a sudden all of these former Bush and Clinton people started showing up wringing their hands and saying what Trump must or must not do. As Omni Ceren said on Twitter, how do the Clinton people have any standing at all, since they facilitated the situation we are in now?
It also occurred to me that if the President got off Twitter it would be like unilateral disarmament. Look at all of those journalists pushing their agenda. No wonder they want him silent on Twitter!
Thankfully, he's not stupid.

I have come to the conclusion that I just do not get baseball. I think if you didn't play it as a kid (which women my age did not) or have a major league team in your city (which Indianapolis did not) you are just sort of standing on the sidelines wondering what the heck is going on.

MM, Soday Springs ID appears to be in the far Eastern part of the state close to the Wyoming border in the Yellowstone Park area.
Lyle is quite a distance from there.

The threat of sanctions against North Korean trading partners is a good first step. Let China, India and Russia choose who they value more.
I wonder why the US Govt doesn't 'reluctantly' announce "Long term, the US won't commit to protecting So Korea and Japan in perpetuity. Thus, if No Korea is allowed to acquire nukes we intend to aid SK, Japan (and Vietnam!) to develop the capability to protect themselves".
Also, monitor NK broadcasts. At some future time when the Congressional population has a higher proportion of patriots and fewer cowards make an announcement that you're taking them at their word. "On month/day the official North Korea announced that the US would be crushed. Is that the position of the NK gov't? If so, a Declaration of War will be solicited from the US Congress."
Instead of starting from the position "there's nothing we can do because somebody might get hurt", give our enemies a feeling that we are looking for a suitable pretext to take extreme measures.

Quite true, glasater. Go any further east from Soda Springs and you're in Wyoming and quite close to Yellowstone.
Frau, I was quoting Steely Dan in re Kid Charlemagne.

Donald J. TrumpāVerified account @realDonaldTrump
The United States is considering, in addition to other options, stopping all trade with any country doing business with North Korea.
Interesting, what with us having a Guangzhou China Cargo Hub and a few hundred pilots currently domiciled in China. On the plus side, we have a similar large structure already established at Osaka's Kansai Airport which is a 24 Hour ops Airport like Guangzhou, established I am told as a contingency should problems erupt nixing our China ops. We also have ample ramp space and property at the old Military Base outside Manila we could shift to fairly rapidly if required. Nice to know that in these interesting times we live in the Company has taken what precautions they can to keep the packages moving.
FWIW over the last few months when operating out of select airports in Asia (Taiwan, Japan, South Korea) we have been required to contact Global Ops immediately prior to departure to ensure that nothing is going on in North Korea mandating an immediate change of plans. I suspect all the other airlines are doing something similar.

MM, the lines themselves are called foul lines, though the lines themselves are actually fair territory. Everything outside the lines is foul territory.
A next batter is "on deck".
I've never heard the area behind home plate ever called anything besides the area behind home plate.
Baseball guys, what is the equivalent term for "standing on the sidelines"?

Fair is foul, and foul is fair:

"Not on the field" or "off the field." There are a few people who hang out there. Coaches, ball/bat boy, next up batter, umpires.
The rest of the players are in dugouts or "the pen" where pitchers are warming up. The spectators are in the stands.

I still think I'm more scared of Otezla than of an EMP from North Korea.

You must not take OtezlaĀ® (apremilast) if you are allergic to apremilast or to any of the ingredients in Otezla.
Otezla is associated with an increase in adverse reactions of depression. In clinical studies, some patients reported depression and suicidal behavior while taking Otezla. Some patients stopped taking Otezla due to depression. Before starting Otezla, tell your doctor if you have had feelings of depression, suicidal thoughts, or suicidal behavior.
Side effects of Otezla in psoriasis clinical studies were diarrhea, nausea, upper respiratory tract infection, tension headache, and headache.
These are not all the possible side effects with Otezla.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or planning to breastfeed. Otezla has not been studied in pregnant women or in women who are breastfeeding.
Severe Renal Impairment...has been observed...

dugout, bull pen, or 1st/3rd base coaches boxes, are all sort of standing on the sidelines.
Grabbing some PINE, doesn't mean picking up a bat.
Daddy, did you see my earlier posts regarding a fellow Fed Ex pilot, I attended the Air Force football game with. FWIW, his name is Pete.
On a baseball side note, I attended the Brewers Triple A affiliate, the CO SPRINGS/SKYSOX game Friday Night. 1st row behind home plate. I could here the F-BOMBS flying, when The Sky Sox Manager got tossed. Quite entertaining.
