I don't know if the "Democracy Dies in Darkness" crowd is capable of embarrassment but this headline blows me away:
Hurricane Irma just slammed into Trump’s Caribbean estate — and is headed toward his Florida properties
I guess when life hands you lemons, make gin and tonics, amirite? And isn't it great they can regale their readers with their idea of good news amidst the looming disaster? The comments section is all "You go, girl" for Irma, so it is mission accomplished for the WaPo in their quest for clicks.
Maybe after his Florida properties it will be headed for his people's house property in D.C. This may be the left's last hope of getting rid of him.

a-mom from the previous thread:
A first step would be to require 100 percent American content for semiconductors, flat panels, sensors, and other key components of defense equipment.
Already required for sensitive semiconductor chips (defense, space, etc.), and has been the case for decades. They call it the "Trusted Fab" program - and it requires very stringent controls and super high security to prevent hacking, malicious backdoors, etc. - but with the industry consolidation of the past few years, it's very difficult and in fact there's no solution at this time. One requirement of the program is that only American-owned fabs, located here, can be "trusted." Currently, that's a very small number of fabs, and for leading edge technology, it's basically down to Intel and Micron, neither of which can afford to run such low-volume production, even for a high price, and I'm pretty sure Micron is basically only memory these days.
It's a big problem, which a lot of feds and their consultants are looking at, with no known solution.

My friend texted me that news was reporting that Trump was looking at a deal with the dems.
After his experience with Obamacare and their foot-dragging on the border wall and tax reform and a bunch of other things I can't list, exactly why shouldn't he give it a shot? ( Oh, let's not forget their perfidy on disallowing him recess appointments!)
We discussed this morning how Fox has thrown in with the pro-immigration crap. We have seen how Republican senators refused to repeal Obamacare. We know that Paul Ryan lectures us while holding 2 opposing positions on DACA.
Who do you guys think put Trump into the winning column in Wisconsin and Michigan? It was Reagan democrats.
I have said before I think we are looking at party realignment. This might be the spark that lights the fuse.
We pro-Life people and fiscal conservatives have been treated every bit as badly by the Republicans as the blacks and union guys have been treated by the dems. Both sides put fancy, hot-button issues in their platforms and then do absolutely nothing, continuing on their merry way with abortion, high taxes, off-shoring manufacturing, etc.
The only people who are currently getting a fair shake from this system are universities, Hollywood, the media, and the extremely wealthy who can shelter money in various tax avoidance plans which average people cannot.
Meanwhile, crime is sky high, drugs pour across the border, inner city schools are in shambles, job prospects for kids are not what they were 50 years ago, colleges steer kids into worthless majors and collect huge sums while the kids graduate in debt, and I could go on and on.
If Joe Donnelly of Indiana (dem) will vote for tax cuts and the border wall, I might give him my vote. He would prove himself more reliable than John McCain or Lisa Murkowski.

First they came for a nurse and carted her off in cuffs.
Then they did the same to a guy making a point at a Townhall:
" Local police are reportedly planning to charge a man who attended Sen. Patrick Toomey’s (R-Pa.) town hall after he asked the senator a question that was perceived as “threatening.”
The exchange between Toomey and the man, reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, led Bethlehem, Pa., police to remove the man, who law enforcement said they would charge with disrupting a public meeting and disorderly conduct.
According to the Post-Gazette, Simon Radecki of Northampton County asked Toomey a question about a family member in an effort to talk about immigration.
“We’ve been here for a while. You probably haven’t seen the news. Can you confirm whether or not your daughter Bridget has been kidnapped?” Radecki asked the senator.
After several seconds, Radecki then said, “The reason I ask is because that’s the reality of families that suffer deportation.”
Tim Fallon, the CEO of PBS39, which aired last week’s town hall, described the exchange to the newspaper as “one of the scariest things that I have ever been a part of.”
The incident caused the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania to come to Radecki’s defense, however.
The group’s legal director said the ACLU would “love to talk” to Radecki should he require legal assistance.
“You aren’t going to show that intent, and the disruption stemmed not from his question but the response to it,” Vic Walczak, the legal director, told the Post-Gazette.
A spokesman for Toomey called the question “reprehensible.”
“Asking questions that are based upon kidnapping a child is not only reprehensible, but it is inherently threatening,” Steve Kelly told the newspaper."

Actually here's more:
I know nothing whatsoever about business.
My wife is Chinese, her cousin in China is the sole agent for some giant state-owned enterprise for purposes of buying beef in the US and North America.
It's him and a couple of people, but I may be pressed into duty to travel with him to cow-populated areas like Iowa and Nebraska. Because I am a native speaker and because I am honest and trustworthy.
But along with that, the cousin asked "what does it take to start a business in the US?".

This could be convenient to him in various ways. For example, I was on a conversation with one firm who has qualified for exporting to China. That firm, in Irvine CA, has gotten a lot of inquiries (this is a new business opportunity recently agreed by the US and China). So, as one way to thin the the horde of possible partners, they are only doing business with companies which are a US business.
See, I know nothing about business. I thought you just called on the phone, said you wanted to buy stuff and the other side threw their hats in the air "Yay, we have a customer!".

First off, think location. This country has fallen to something like #23 on the list of countries favorable for startups. OK. Maybe it was #18 and I just forgot.
Second, if it is to be the US, pick a good state. Without looking it up, I suspect that NorCal is about the worst place possible in the 57 states for doing that.

So .... this would be something very light weight.
I know I need to be careful if the US company (subsidiary?) has my address on it. Or has my name on it.
I know I have to find out what his structure is in China and how a US branch would fit.
And I need to find out the mechanics of starting a company (can you even do it yourself, or do you need experts?). Is this something you do at a local or state level?
How big a deal is it if you have a foreign parent company?
I figured someone out in JOM land might have some general principles, or web links, etc to relay.

OL @ 3:32
The actions of the police, and the comments of Toomey's people, are a disgrace.
Why didn't he just explain reality? Deportation is NOT kidnapping, but the lawful arrest and removal of someone who has either entered this country illegally, or violated the terms under which they are allowed to remain here as a non-citizen. Regardless of how it might feel to the deportee, that's how it works in every country on Earth, and without borders, immigration laws and a deportation process, we don't have a sovereign nation at all.
Instead, he decided to show his ignorance, and cowardice, and abuse his power.

JimNorCal,
I can only go on my experience as an eBay business, which is probably not the same situation as yours. First you have to decide if you are a sole proprietor, partnership, or corporation. There are advantages and disadvantages to each, and you should decide which case suits your situation best. (On this you might have to consult a business attorney for advice. Keep your receipt from his bill as it will be a business expense.)
Once you decide that, look for rules of doing business in a neighboring state, since I assume California is the last place one would do a start-up. You would at minimyum need a post office box with a mailing address in the other state (to avoid California taxes) but I don't know how California handles this stuff nor do I understand, for example, Nevada's laws.
If you think you have a profitable idea, it really would be worth your time to speak to an attorney and maybe your tax guy so that you knew the pitfalls and benefits.

GUS,
My ex-husband was supposed to start paying me a monthly amount for one year starting last June. I have so far only gotten $800 from him by begging. He in arrears to me now several thousands of dollars.
Without this money, I am below poverty level and should my old Jeep break down, or the furnace need repair, I am out of luck unless I can borrow from my siblings, which I already have done too much to count. I live with my daughter, who isn't very flush with cash herself.
When I say I am poor, I mean poor. My house was foreclosed on and I have sold almost everything I own, including my jewelry. My ex-husband hid income of over $600,000 over the last 2 years and that is just what he reported (info from my attorney). He has bizarre expenses he reported to his lawyer like $10,000 for "funeral money" for some guy. (He is at last I heard, in Ghana.)
I don't like disclosing personal stuff but what the heck. My attorney is a nice woman but 1. She really has no experience with foreign stuff and 2. I would have to pay her, so I would rather find stuff out myself.
Thanks.

MM, Even if you find him unless he has funds here, I'm sorry to say it will be nearly impossible to get at them. If he has funds here, you might seek a court order attaching them. The best you can do is find an address where he can be served with notice of the court hearing and a later copy of the order IMO.Your lawyer could speed this up if she can get his lawyer to say he's still representing him, in which case you might make service on him thru his lawyer.

Don't incorporate in California if at all possible. That means doing business here as well. Nevada is good, as is delaware.
We have had a long history with several start ups, some of which succeeded, but the costs of doing business and taxation and regulation are very discouraging.
We had to close our chemicals business because the AQMD (air quality), a uniquely LA area governmental organization. They have driven a lot of manufacturing out of the state.

Jim,
The advice you've received so far is pretty good. You sketched out what you want to do, and I admit that I know little enough about it that I don't understand all the issues.
At its simplest, you file a d/b/a and publish it in your local newspaper. You file for a business license, and open a bank account in the name of your fictitious business. That's about it. Congrats! You have your sole proprietorship up and running!
Now if you want to raise capital and have investors, or have any legal exposure, you want to have a corporation or an LLC. Both will shield you from personal liability should anything happen to the company. So a creditor can only come after the company assets, but they cannot touch your house (for example) unless they can pierce the corporate veil.
Corporations can be traditional C Corps or S Corps, the latter of which is a pass-through entity for tax purposes. There also are restrictions on stock ownership -- single class (common), no foreign owners, and a limit on total number of investors.
LLCs also are pass-through entities (usually) and they can be set up in a mind-numbing number of ways. Lawyers tend to love them, but the law is less established for them as I understand. Still, they are a popular choice, and I won't get into the details.
You can have a business domiclied in CA and incorporate in elsewhere. Delaware is the usual choice, and it is a good one. Still, don't get too hung up one this one -- mine is a CA corporation, and many others have gone on to go public.
For Corps/LLCs, you have to register with the secretary of state, and file annual update your statements (and pay $800). You also need you local city/county business license and any other licenses you need for you line of business.
Partnerships in my line of work have no advantages, so I don't recall the details. PLCs I'm not familiar with at all, since they also don't fit.
It sounds like you would have an office only, so you probably don't have to deal with hazardous waste programs, fire department inspections and the like. There may be some requirements to have fire extinguisher that is updated regularly. You insurance company will also impose a few requirements, as may your local/county government.
The best advice is to talk to a lawyer. We have a business-oriented lawyer here on JOM -- the English fellow who lives in San Francisco. I don't recall his handle here, but I do know his name and how to reach him. I'm sure he could walk you through this stuff and at least point you in the right direction.
For costs, setting up a corporation or an LLC will typically cost about $2K in your area. Much of the rest of it you can take care of yourself. None of this is hard, but there are many layers to it.
Let me know here if you don't have my email address. If you do, send me an email message and I'll introduce you to your local JOM lawyer.

I thought the last line read '...in their quest for dicks.'
Either works.

Note the name of the town:
For those who didn't find the name of the town in the Paris suburbs where the 2 Bomb making Islamic terror suspects were just arrested by the French gendarmes, the town is named "Villejuif"----"Jewish Town."

MM posted this earlier today.
It's well worth the time:

daddy,The name Villejuif can be imprecisely translated as "Jewish Town", but the area has no historical connections with the Jewish population of Paris. The name is believed to be a corruption of a Gallo-Roman name, Villa Iuvii, meaning the villa of Iuvius.[1](Wikipedia)
It's inhabitant are almost all pied noirs or non EU immigrants. It's one of those banleuis that surround the city and are in essence no go zones.

My ex-husband was supposed to start paying me a monthly amount for one year starting last June. I have so far only gotten $800 from him by begging. He in arrears to me now several thousands of dollars...
My attorney is a nice woman but 1. She really has no experience with foreign stuff and 2. I would have to pay her, so I would rather find stuff out myself.
Why would any attorney not get a lump sum from that scumbag? Anybody with three neurons connecting could see this coming.
I see this over and over and over again---and seems to this non attorney like they allow these kinds of agreements so they have to go back to court to collect. An annuity of sorts for the lawyers.
Feel free to disabuse me of this notion, attorney JOMers.

I hope you're right, sbw. I have no idea what the day to day interactions between Sessions and Trump are like, or even how often they meet. All I know for sure is that he has a huge job of clearing out nests of embedded bad actors and I don't have a lot of confidence that he's the right person to do that. The Senate isn't a good place to develop dynamic leaders and his recusing himself from the Russian investigation sent out signals that he can be rolled if opponents just exert enough pressure.
I hope I'm wrong about this which time will tell. I have no idea what Trump thinks of his performance thus far but he can't be happy that the FBI has been acting like a rogue bureau actively resenting those who have oversight responsibilities.

Clarice,
I bookmarked that NC site.
I am going to call the bank tomorrow and see if they can tell me from where the last money transfer originated.
He moves around a lot and so I need to figure out if he has moved to one of those reciprocal countries.
Thanks a bunch!

anonamom,
The excuse was would I delay because he was waiting on a new job. After TWO YEARS I was desperate to end the entire thing, as I was incurring lawyer fees with nothing to show for it except one contempt hearing (which I won) and I had to get that to get living expenses while I was still in the house.
He also was supposed to pay off my charge cards (which of course were high because he stiffed me on the living expenses while all this was going on).
It's embarrassing to even talk about this, as I was almost sure he was going to do this to me, but I was so scared about being liable for his taxes because of finding out how much income he had declared that I figured he was doing something illegal.
He's been in Tajikistan, Tanzania, Ghana, Burkina faso, Dhubai. France, and South Africa.
For all I know he is running guns or drugs. I just got to the point I wanted to get out so I didn't end up in jail. Probably a stupid decision, but that's how I was thinking.
My attorney got stiffed, too. He was supposed to cover all attorney fees, including the $6,000 I paid her and the additional 5 grand incurred after she told me she was going to ask for him to pay them.

I don't think in most cases that's a realistic request; the payouts are made over time because the payers income accrues over time. Any attorneys can correct me if that's not the case.

Jim, knowing nothing about your cousin of course, I will remind you that there is a long line of innocent partners who have been used by China as fronts for things which turned out badly, and doing so is not the same as a couple of fraternity brothers deciding to build a computer in a garage, say.
Also I use Delaware, but if I wanted to be more invisible, I would use NV.
Just be careful.
MM, (and, as Clarice prefaced her post, sadly) one of the most important attractions for rich Americans who protect their assets by using overseas accounts and trusts etc is that money parked offshore is often very difficult to reach without an order from a conviction in that country's court system, and waving around an order from a US judge does not work if the guy who set it up wanted to be free of pesky US claims. US lawyers who advise clients on this always say "...and even if they find your foreign account, by the time they pay US lawyers to hire lawyers in the country where the money is, and after appeal after appeal, most US creditors will just give up rather than spend all that money and time.)
As I said, this is a sad but true fact for scums who use this dodge to hurt people like you.

Thanks for the correction, Clarice. I took it at face value since I know the Marais District of Paris was heavily Jewish. Always appreciate the corrections. Waikiki is gorgeous this morning but I have a checkride in a couple hours so I'm currently sober and studying:(
