Cillizza is such an idiot. Of course there can be reprisals for making idiotic statements and stunts, just not in the form of prosecution by the state. That isn't a difficult concept to grasp even for a floating head on the airport channel.
AB @ 5:27... funny you should mention that. We are watching Vietnam on Maine Public TV (the re-air) and just now are watching the part about about McCain. Whatever anyone thinks about Ken Burns and the narrative,it is very interesting to watch.
Momto2...the NASCAR race in New Hampshire is the final race for this date in NH. There will still be a July race, but this date is moving to Las Vegas next year. Speaking of a sport that is suffering because of lack of viewership.
The young man who is the points leader in the ARCA race series is from Fort Kent,Maine. His family's trucking company are clients of hubby's office. When Austin was still in high school, his parents asked hubby to talk him into going to college. He was interested in politics, but he really wanted to race. He's following his dream.
The specific rule pertaining to the national anthem is found on pages A62-63 of the NFL League Rulebook. It states:
“The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem.
“During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking. The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition...
...It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses.”
I taped the Vietnam series for hubs but I couldn't bear to watch it. I think he's to the point Johnson is about to take over after JFK's death and do the impossible - top JFK's mammoth errors in judgment. Doesn't sound like Burns went easy on either.

They should have kept it a special tradition for special but infrequent occasions imo. Whoever said "Familiarity breeds contempt" was not wrong.

LIke I have pointed out, he was born here of a Spanish naval officer and his wife. Then lived around Europe on NATO duty (his dad).
But the poor butt hurt NFL players who as a minimum make $425K a year feel oppressed. This is what our current edumacation system has given us. Poor rse. All the facts and no one wants to do a damn thing.
No prayer in the school. No pledge. No national anthem.
Not sure what it is, but I heard they want "social equality," Janet. Social equality for pro football players seems like a letdown for them, but I'm all for it.
I don't know, Janet. Originally, I thought it was because of the anthem's background/lyrics - America was not the "land of the free' for millions of black slaves when the poem was written. The verses we never hear include phrases like "hireling and slave" iirc. Choosing a song about a flag surviving a night of bombardment in a war most Americans are clueless about in a location almost no one can name has always seemed a bizarre anthem choice to me.
Don't forget that originally Kaeperdick's initial rant and reason the first time he did it was that he thought Hillary got special treatment and should be in prison AND that anyone that was protesting with BLM would not get the special treatment she did.
"Anybody that don’t stand up for the anthem oughta be out of the country. Period. What got ’em where they’re at? The United States,” Petty said in comments reported by the AP.
Richard Childress, a former drive who owns Richard Childress Racing, said any protests from his team members would “get you a ride on a Greyhound bus.”
I actually like the anthem. The flag is obviously a symbol, its survival representative of the survival of the country. The imagery of the soldiers inspired by being able to see the flag at night because of the 'bombs bursting in air' is pretty cool.
I suppose it's possible that "land of the free" might grate on the descendants of slaves, but I doubt most of these kneelers even know (other than possibly that) what is in the lyrics.
I found it very odd that in that matrix someone posted, that Dems are more highly favorable of watching Tennis. When you consider the price of major tournament tickets that seems skewed wrong but then the left have become the dominant billionaires in this country. And golf was more Republican than NASCAR?
I agree with golf but NASCAR being in the middle? Suspect.
A sports radio caller here had a good point tonight, that the NFL blew its chance to crack down when Kaepernick first started this crap, and he invoked Giuliani's broken windows. If you don't do anything about the small stuff, pretty soon you're having to deal with the bigger problems that ensue.

I place no credence in that survey after the Jets game for several reasons:
1. Season ticket holders are not going to throw away their investment.
2. People don't want to say they won't be back, because they don't want to be accused of racism.
3. The Fox Sports contract with the NFL may have affected which answers were shown on screen. (I think this is very important.)

Posted by: Porchlight | September 24, 2017 at 07:00 PM
Deb - not sure what you mean?
Is he not reminding the NFL of the sacrifices that patriots have made for our country and our flag?
Symbols are important. Disrespecting our flag is not a popular stand.

Extraneus,
It wasn't a numbers survey. They showed some people in on-screen interviews and then told us what the majority sentiment was.

It is rightly unpopular and is about to become more so. Tennessee church shooter has #TakeAKnee as his Facebook cover.

Deb and M22,
LIke I have pointed out, he was born here of a Spanish naval officer and his wife.
What the hell did we expect?

What do the 'take a knee' NFL guys want?
Is there a specific demand or desire that they are putting out there?
I don't even understand what the deal is.
Is it just a general, 'America is lousy' message?

Jack,
When do you think it will dawn on some of the press that like him or not, the guy is pretty smart?
Posted by: Miss Marple the Deplorable | September 24, 2017 at 07:21 PM
Not sure what it is, but I heard they want "social equality," Janet. Social equality for pro football players seems like a letdown for them, but I'm all for it.
Posted by: Extraneus | September 24, 2017 at 07:22 PM
I don't know, Janet. Originally, I thought it was because of the anthem's background/lyrics - America was not the "land of the free' for millions of black slaves when the poem was written. The verses we never hear include phrases like "hireling and slave" iirc. Choosing a song about a flag surviving a night of bombardment in a war most Americans are clueless about in a location almost no one can name has always seemed a bizarre anthem choice to me.
Posted by: DebinGA | September 24, 2017 at 07:26 PM
Well, the choices for anthems seem pretty limited, DebinGA.
My Country, Tis of Thee is set to God Save the Queen, which seems sort of unacceptable.
America the Beautiful is a hymn.
God Bless America has God in the title.
I don't know what else you would use. Plus, if you wrote a new one then years of tradition would be thrown away.

Baltimore harbor, that was considered valuable real estate, once upon a time,
some anthems are less elegiac and more martial take the marseillaise, 'awake children of france' or this example,

Don't forget that originally Kaeperdick's initial rant and reason the first time he did it was that he thought Hillary got special treatment and should be in prison AND that anyone that was protesting with BLM would not get the special treatment she did.
Down the memory hole with that...
