Ha!

henry

I thought they were kneeling instead of playing.

Jim Eagle

Bringing it over from the last thread since it is on topic:

Villanueva's story is interesting. He was born at Naval Air Station Meridien in Mississippi. His father was a Spanish Naval officer on exchange to the US. He has lived all over Europe and learned American football, in of all places, Belgium during his dad's tour of SHAFE.

I think he speaks several languages. His best friend in Casteau was admitted to West Point and he told the coaches about this giant of a man in Belgium. That is how he got to West Point.

Served 3 tours of Afghanistan. Bronze Star. Thos eejit teammates on the Stoolers couldn't carry his jock strap.

Something about they have a right to protest but not in that venue,

See TM's previous post, Jim.

>>>As to Trump, Sen. Ben Sasse tweets some interesting points:

NFL players: You have the right to protest Trump tmrw. But aren’t there better ways than kneeling before the flag soldiers died to defend?

btw, Trump wants you to kneel--because it divides the nation, with him and the flag on the same side. Don't give him the attention he wants.<<<

The Roger Goodell experience has been like a Wayans Brothers/BLM remake of Trading Places where the Duke brothers take a not particularly smart and unlikeable white turd out of the company mailroom and put him in charge of the company to see if he can run it into the ground. Jets did the same thing. Everyone stood arm in arm, including the owner. (Well, the acting owner, since his older brother Woody Johnson became US Ambassador to England.) Happy b.s., but that's fine with me. At least they were all standing. Opponents, the Dolphins, had several guys kneeling.

Questions for any Prog:

What is the minimum anyone should contribute to the community?

What is the minimum anyone should expect from the community?

Clarice Feldman

The specific rule pertaining to the national anthem is found on pages A62-63 of the NFL League Rulebook. It states:
“The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem.
“During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking. The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition...
...It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses.”

Momto2,

I went to the chart with the sphere's. Basically, sports to the upper right trend Republican with high voter turnout. Lower left is sports that trend democrat with low voter turnout.

That big blue ball is the NFL.

Extraneus

It wouldn't be in the "rule book," Clarice. If it's true, it would be in some sort of Player's Association (union) agreement.

DebinGA

From MLB site on history of anthem at games: "From that day [1918 World Series] on, the anthem rang out on Opening Day, special occasions (like Independence Day) and the and during World War II, when all Major League ballparks boasted public announcing systems, the tradition of the anthem before every game began." ... They should have kept it a special tradition for special but infrequent occasions imo. Whoever said "Familiarity breeds contempt" was not wrong.

Fox seemed to find people who wouldn't boycott although didn't like the protest.

I place no credence in that survey after the Jets game for several reasons:

1. Season ticket holders are not going to throw away their investment.

2. People don't want to say they won't be back, because they don't want to be accused of racism.

3. The Fox Sports contract with the NFL may have affected which answers were shown on screen. (I think this is very important.)

now burns doesn't spell it out, but he suggests that being quartermaster to the French end of the conflict, and diem's declaration of victory in the south Vietnamese elections were the more obvious mistakes, but that's not at all certain, knowing the nature of left wing dictators, consider Indonesia, which had a similar experience with decolonialism, and the trouble sukarno proved, or ne win, of the Burmese junta, that ruled for thirty some years,

Is it just a general, 'America is lousy' message?

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Jack,

When do you think it will dawn on some of the press that like him or not, the guy is pretty smart?

Extraneus

Not sure what it is, but I heard they want "social equality," Janet. Social equality for pro football players seems like a letdown for them, but I'm all for it.

DebinGA

I don't know, Janet. Originally, I thought it was because of the anthem's background/lyrics - America was not the "land of the free' for millions of black slaves when the poem was written. The verses we never hear include phrases like "hireling and slave" iirc. Choosing a song about a flag surviving a night of bombardment in a war most Americans are clueless about in a location almost no one can name has always seemed a bizarre anthem choice to me.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Well, the choices for anthems seem pretty limited, DebinGA.

My Country, Tis of Thee is set to God Save the Queen, which seems sort of unacceptable.

America the Beautiful is a hymn.

God Bless America has God in the title.

I don't know what else you would use. Plus, if you wrote a new one then years of tradition would be thrown away.

narciso

Richard Childress, a former drive who owns Richard Childress Racing, said any protests from his team members would “get you a ride on a Greyhound bus.”

jimmyk

I actually like the anthem. The flag is obviously a symbol, its survival representative of the survival of the country. The imagery of the soldiers inspired by being able to see the flag at night because of the 'bombs bursting in air' is pretty cool.

I suppose it's possible that "land of the free" might grate on the descendants of slaves, but I doubt most of these kneelers even know (other than possibly that) what is in the lyrics.

Jim Eagle

I found it very odd that in that matrix someone posted, that Dems are more highly favorable of watching Tennis. When you consider the price of major tournament tickets that seems skewed wrong but then the left have become the dominant billionaires in this country. And golf was more Republican than NASCAR?

I agree with golf but NASCAR being in the middle? Suspect.

Dave (in MA)

A sports radio caller here had a good point tonight, that the NFL blew its chance to crack down when Kaepernick first started this crap, and he invoked Giuliani's broken windows. If you don't do anything about the small stuff, pretty soon you're having to deal with the bigger problems that ensue.
