There was a time when we could rely on progressives to look to Europe as an aspiration and an inspiration for better days in the US. But what has overcome the NY Times?
In Angela Merkel, German Women Find Symbol, but Not Savior
OSNABRÜCK, Germany — Just 9 years old when Chancellor Angela Merkelwas first elected in 2005, Kristin Auf der Masch cannot really remember a time when Germany was led by a man.
But if Ms. Auf der Masch, now 21 and an apprentice at a wind energy company in this northwestern city, finds it hard to imagine a male chancellor, she also finds it impossible to imagine a female boss.
“There are lots of women at my level, and then there is Angela Merkel,” she said during a recent classroom debate about the election on Sept. 24, when Ms. Merkel is expected to win a fourth term. “There aren’t many women in between.”
Germany, which has been led by the most powerful woman in the world for 12 years, has a woman problem.
Trouble in Their Blue Heaven? What's next, reporting on immigrant problems in Sweden?
I take this personally:
Alice Schwarzer, the country’s best-known feminist, put it this way: “Since 2005, little girls can decide: Do I become a hairdresser — or chancellor?”
But ask Ms. Auf der Masch and the 14 other apprentices in her class how many of the local companies that train them — midsize businesses that make everything from margarine to mobility scooters — are run by women. Not a single hand goes up.
There are a few female department heads, most of them childless. But collectively the apprentices can think of more managers called “Thomas” than managers who are women.
As in "Thomas the Tank Engine"? Naah, that's the Brits. But lest you or I doubt, they have more:
There are, in fact, more C.E.O.s named “Thomas” (seven) than C.E.O.s who are women (three) in Germany’s 160 publicly traded companies, notes the AllBright foundation, which tracks women in corporate leadership.
I had no idea of the scope of the German problem.
Fortuitously first (perhaps)

"most of Europe is behind America in women executives"
The word 'behind' suggests that there is some higher number that is optimal. But if you buy that for this, then you buy it for everything--sportscasters, soldiers, firemen, etc.

"There are, in fact, more C.E.O.s named “Thomas” (seven) than C.E.O.s who are women (three)" (in Germany).
Easily solved! Abandon the name "Thomas" in German speaking countries and leave that name to Spanish and English speaking nations!

I thought the science was settled, that both men and women prefer male bosses. If so, why the need for more women? (I have been a boss at points, and a very kind one to boot, but then I am not a trend).

Bringing this over from the last thread:
Roy Moore wants President Trump's endorsement in the Senate race which I think he is going to win.
The reason Moore is more flamboyant which seems to be a required trait now.
President is a populist who leans conservative.
I am still a conservative who supports President Trump but will happily vote for Mike Pence, a true conservative when his time comes.
Frau:
By halo I meant it is ok to still support him but disagree at times with his decisions.
Huh?

My sister was a manager in retail, with reponsibilities for sales revue, scheduling, display, etc. The whole nine yards.
I think there are fewer women managers because they are expected by employees to be more sympathetic. My sister was good at balancing the sympathy with setting goals, but a lot of women (including me) would find it very difficult.
My theory, therefore, means the a high percentage of female managers either burn out or fail due to not being forceful enough.

jimmyk: "The word 'behind' suggests that there is some higher number that is optimal."
True!
Nonetheless when you compare topics like female leadership in industry, or reduction in carbon emissions or aid to stricken nations ... Europe wins off the chart in terms of words and formal treaties. US wins in terms of actual results.

Clean bill of health from my new Dentist, and she is cute as pie!
The AM stations that have left their mark are 50 kilowatt stations. Most are required to significantly reduce power at night because medium wave transmissions propagate like crazy when it's dark.
The other night on the check ride from Hawaii to Oakland I pulled up AM Station 680 from San Francisco at 1,350 miles. It was loud and clear with a very strong point on both ADF Navigation needles pointing to the source of the signal. 680 is Sports Talk and Giants Baseball. It impressed the Checkride Instructor and the right seater, and I pretended I was doing it by explaining that if all 3 of our Inertial computers died on us I could still simply follow that ADF point 1300 miles to San Fran and then rely on ATC radar controllers to give us stop/start turns to find the field.
It's amazing how strong an AM signal can be out in the middle of nowhere where there aren't any other energy transmissions ongoing. I have in the past successfully received AM 680 at 1800 miles out before, but only intermittently as I believe it bounces on and off the upper athmosphere in sort of cycles that work then distort and vanish. The very next night was the leg up to Anchorage when the Sun had just erupted and created the amazing Borealis we watched all evening, but that clobbered my local stations I try to catch abeam Seattle and Yakitat etc. I got nothing.
I remember all this because an old timer years back taught me as a rookie the importance In the old days of AM signals as their prime external means of navigation over the ocean. I became a believer when in about 1980 on a 2000 mile leg from the boat just off the Straits of Hormuz to Diego Garcia, dead center of the vast empty Indian Ocean, our Inertials caged a while after the catapult shot, so we were pointed in the general direction and on our own and I very specifically recall a few hours later that thru the static of my ADF radio I could make out Elvis singing "Jailhouse Rock". It had to be from the low wattage station at Dodge, (1475 I think at the time) and shortly thereafter, about 800 miles out, we got a decent enough point on the ADF that we knew Elvis had rescued us from infinity:)
Excuse the OT, especially since I've told it before, but who among doesn't enjoy a story of being personally rescued by the King?

JimmyK,
I also noticed the problem with the jumping to last page recently. I use bookmarklets to do that and end of page in safari. I borrowed heavily from the Narcisolater code.
The problem seems to be that typhus is no longer resolving a supplied page number greater than the actual last page number to the actual last page number. I.e. Last page is 6, the code says go to page 100 and in the past you would go to 6, now with that approach you go to 1st page always.
Not sure how to resolve. Hmmmmmm.

BTW.
I have not seen the polling and focus groups that Surber referred in his piece. In fact I have been polling free.
But I do have a theory that I will float for consideration.
A lot of Democrat giddiness is based on a national poll of adults on the generic preference question.
My theory, which will be field test in 18, is that in times of extreme partisanship, ( i.e. NOW) you can not look at a national poll and tell anything. Remember without California, Hillary would not have gotten a majority of the votes. And in all these states that have Republican control, being called racist every other day or even more frequently, and Antifa and Democrat Resist movement, plus a bill with 16 D sponsors in the Senate for single payor, is going to mean you have to look state by state for an off year election to figure out what is going to happen. We shall see soon enough.

Maryrose, with all respect, your request that we not comment on your post from a prior thread is unreasonable. As was your similar request sometime back that we not comment on a post once that poster is no longer here.
Fact of the matter is that almost all of us drop in when we can, catch up as best we can, then post what we think about what has been posted since the last time.
This is not a conversation among posters in real time; it is a journal of posts over time, and the one request that does make sense is that when a poster is responding to something not within the last few minutes, then providing hint about the post being responded to, either by a short quote or at least a reference to the time of the post being respond to is a simple courtesy.
Refraining from answering to a post by one of us from a previous thread would deprive many of us of the valuable stream of thought we get from this place.
My two cents.

This is true. The booking photos have been showing up on my Twitter feed. They don't look nearly as glamorous without those black masks. Most look like degenerates and losers.

Feel bad for a daughter who now has to be raised by Rosie O'Donnell.
She'd be better off being raised by wolves. Remember a few years ago some poor girl, who through a convoluted series of horrible events had O'Besity legally responsible for her, ended up with her therapy dog at some drug dealer's dump after being missing for days. The number of deserved throatslashings was very large and only excluded the girl and dog.

Next up on Martha McCallum's show:
Steve King (to rant about DACA)
Karl Rove (to tell us whether the President will be successful)
Ben Shapiro (to portray himslf as a hero)
Taking a pass on all 3.

A day ending in "y"
Just a reminder. John McCain is still an asshole:
BREAKING: John McCain (D-AZ) Introduces Bi-Partisan Bill To Halt Trump Transgender Ban . . .

Would Rosie O'Bese need 3 slashes? One for each chin??

The premise of this article is wrong: There are zero men left in Germany if they won't throw this Fifth Columnist out on her arse
"I had no idea of the scope of the German problem."
I'll try my best to lose some sleep over this 'astonishing' news...

Captain
Rosie doesn't know how to parent.
Her own mother died when she was young and she was raised by her dad and brothers.
I think she has bipolar disorder and reminds me a lot of Hillary.

It would be a mess, Gus.

Captain:
This desire by John McCain and Hillary to thrust themselves into the public limelight is pathological and disturbing.

Mary rose,
On a prior thread (I could cut and paste it), you commented that if Trump were conservative he would have been your first choice for Prezzy. Exactly who was your first choice then? Kasich? Job? I await your response.

McCain sees his job as to stick it to President Trump however he can.
Hence:
Dossier
No on Obamacare repeal
Reverse transgender ban (which will not pass)

Does it look like either of these two could be a serious candidate in 2020?

Why would anyone even think of voting for a Democrat ever?

JohnH, maryrose has stated frequently that Ted Cruz was her choice. He was mine also but I had severe qualms about his ability to have prevailed in the general election which became a moot point.

Part of Catherine Herridge's report on Lou Dobbs just broadcast seconds ago, about Susan Rice's "Unmasking" of Flynn and reasons why:
Herridge: ...A Capitol Hill source said Rice's closed Classified testimony confirmed that she used Intelligence Community tools to identify or unmask Trump Transition Team members because she was suspicious of their activity one month before the inauguration. That was a core allegation leveled by the Committee's Republican Chairman (Devin Nunes) that was roundly criticized by Democrats last spring...
(Plays clip of Nunes giving his Presser back in March that he was criticized for)
Herridge:...FOX News asked Rice and her Team whether Iran or Russia drove her decision to unmask Trump Transition Officials. A spokeswoman did not directly address our question, citing Classified information, but said in a statement to FOX quote "There is nothing improper, unusual, or political about such requests, nor do such requests bear any relationship to the unfounded and debunked allegations that the Obama White House ordered the surveillance of any US person.

How anyone squares that last sentence with reality beats the hell out of me.
