We have a house full of antiques, mostly from Mrs. Buckeye's families.
My maternal grandmother was an antique dealer, so we had a house full of antiques as well. She had a shop in the Ogunquit, ME area when I was growing up. She was quite successful despite not having any apparent business skills.
JiB, I agree--raw instincts and drive matter a lot. You make mistakes but you learn and adapt. My grandparents came to the country as children, pretty much lost everything in the Depression, and they got back on the horse, so to speak. I'm sure she was completely self-taught, and had an feel for value and bargaining.
I have many antiques that have been handed down or that have some sentimental value, but I looked around the house the other day and couldn't shake the feeling that parts of my house suddenly looked like a house with a little old lady inside (properly coifed hair once weekly and the monthly perm with tight little curls type older lady). Freaked me out.
I am seriously thinking about sending most of my antiques to auction!
I wish I could still do my eBay business. I was pretty good at finding things for next to nothing that were quite valuable, whether actual antiques or vintage stuff.
There is no room here to keep anything and I can't set up shipping and stuff like that. So those days are over. It was great fun while I did it, though.
Yes, Clarice, we used to vacation there when I was a child. It was always something of an artsy place, so naturally it's become as gay as Provincetown. I think her first shop was in Perkins Cove, and then later she had big rambling house on Route 1 with her shop in the barn.
After gutting the house my father and grandfather were born in, I chose 2x2 white tile for the baths and shower floors.
I pulled off every third tile on the sheets so the tile man could insert ones matching my yellow putty-colored (matching my grandmother's 1922 choice) woodwork after laying the sheets.
It was a fair amount of work (had to remove all the netting in the gap cleanly) but worth it.
My sister works the High Point Furniture Market twice a year. She's heard that the young people don't want old furniture, so prices for affordable antiques are in decline.
Yes, Arthur Imperatore, Sr. Started A-P-A Trucking. They kept files of clippings from local newspapers and if you were trying to gain employment with them they would look you up in their files besides the usual pre-employment checks. Later, sometime after 2000, he closed the company.
By then he was more interested in the 2.5 mile waterfront property in Weehawken that he bought from the bankrupt Penn Central. He was a man of vision. I don't remember if he was the first to see the potential of what we now call the Gold Coast, but he and other developers forever changed the West Bank of the Hudson from Edgewater to Jersey City with new construction. Hobo ken went from seedy to very trendy. In the early 80's I worked for W. A. Kraft in Teterboro, NJ. They sold engine-generator sets for standby electrical power. A loss of electrical power would be sensed by an ATS (automatic transfer switch) which would signal the generator to start, when it came up to power, say about 8-10 seconds, the ATS would swap over to the genset and restore power. We were a distributor for Waukesha Engines. We also sold the engines themselves for other purposes, among them nautical propulsion. Waukeshaw was sold to Dresser which was sold to Haliburton. Don't know if any manufacturing is still done in your area.
The biggest genset they built was a 1200KW unit, bigger than an old Cadillac in length.
Before I came on the scene, W. A. Kraft had sold the gensets used in the Port Authority WTC. We still had the contract to service them and I was privy to the details and the arrangements the PA had in place for servicing them.
The PA specs called for enough diesel storage capacity to run them for 24 hrs. on premises. With an agreement with a fuel oil company to make as many timely deliveries of diesel as needed to keep them supplied. W. A. Kraft held the contract to maintain them, periodically exercise them and to immediately dispatch a mechanic to monitor them if they switched on in an emergency.
If memory serves correctly they had four of the Waukesha 1200 KW gensets. 3 to meet they're needs for emergency power, not enough to run the two towers completely, but enough for an emergency and evacuation. The 4th was standby, in case one was in the middle of repair (which wasn't often) or to respond if one of the primary 3 failed.
Each genset consumed 100 gals. of diesel per hour of operation. 300 gals. per hr. for the 3. Times the 24 hr. construction spec for stored diesel.
Do the math. How many thousands of gallons of diesel fuel were in the basement when the twin towers fell?
Still wondering why the towers smoldered for days.
I hate next to nobody, but put a "Truther" in my face and I'll threaten his/her continuing existence if they don't take it back.

Judge may order Fusion Bank records be given to Congress
I love how Fusion's excuse for why they shouldn't have to comply with these requests is that future clients won't trust them to keep such info secret so they'll lose business. Instead of worrying about lost business they ought to be worrying about serving 20 years to life.
Regarding Fusion GPS and their bank records, I have been thinking about their business model.
Getting paid large chunks for "opposition research" every 4 years wouldn't be a dependable way to structure that business.
As I understand it, those guys who started it were reporters who decided to investigate their investigative knowledge. What if they were subcontractors for "research" and selling it to reporters? And what if they were trading their research for information from other reporters?
Now, what if they went to say, a Senator, with this research and showed them what they had on him and offered to be on "retainer" for the Senator?
OR, what if they were in the business of providing interesting information to the Clintons and the entire dem cabal, including Obama? Blackmail material outside the footprints of the FBI would probably be very helpful.
This has a breakdown of Wikileaks emails on energy and some campaign contacts Podesta made, with dates. There is also some information in the comments.
The Greek word Apocalypse has taken on the modern meaning of a terrible disaster, but the word as used in the Bible in its original meaning is “unveiling.”
==============
I did a quick search for the origin of the word, and indeed, in comes from ecclesiastical Latin and meant "revealing or unveiling."
Interesting observation in a comment at PowerLine. The article talks about how the Senate will soon give an up or down vote for 4 judges. Four. MSM and Dems are calling it a confirmation frenzy.
Is it the case that judgeships can be political payoff?
.
Comment: "Isn't it true Trumps outsider status has been a real benefit in the nomination process? He is able to take recommendations purely on what he percieves as the best advice, rather than a life-long pol that would have a history of favors to repay."
In a recent appearance he ripped the high cost of prescriptions compared to the low costs in other countries and said he was going to do something about it.
Does anyone here have any good resources on antibiotics? My doc has me on some and I am worried about killing all my good bacteria. Do I take probiotics while still on the meds ? Looking for something a little more advanced than the drivel on WebMD
Levin mentioned that dickweed Clintonite, Tom Perez, and his lack of understanding of the Constitution, as part and parcel of the commiecrats desire to eliminate the Electoral College and go strictly by popular vote. That ignorant Dominican should look at the electoral map and realize that it has as much of a chance of winning a change in the Constitution, assuming he even understands the amendment process, as he does a trash talking contest with me. But I'm sure it sent all the Article V cowards here scurrying for their therapy animals.
Sorry I disappeared. I had to go to Mapquest and find an alternate route for my daughter. I-65 is closed in both directions due to an overturned semi, backing up traffic on I-465 as well.
1. cheerleader, don't know if the President's comments had anyting to do with losing the Rite-Aids. We don't have Rite-aid here in my area. The drugstore/prescription market is saturated here. Walgreens and CVS compete heavily, plus Kroger, Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Target all offer pharmacies plus the usual drugstore merchandise as well. I am dead certain if CVS & Walgreens merged they would close a lot of stores, since there seem to be one of each on every corner.
2. RalphL., Have not seen anything pop up on my Twitter feed about Bergdahl, except for the story about the soldier who was shot in the head and is in a wheelchair and can't speak. He was going to be there to somehow give testimony.
peter, if you type your question into youtube I bet you'll find lots of useful information.
The only story I've read about the Bergdahl trial is the story about the witness who had to hold back tears when talking about his military trained dog that was shot by a sniper when they were out looking for Bergdahl.
Cheerleader, the WSJ blames Amazon getting into prescription drugs for many pharmacy woes. Store closing shift up to today's CVS buying Aetna for $66 billion. I imagine insurance preferring bulk mail order for maintenance meds put a hurt on pharmacies long before Amazon showed up.
This chat about northern Michigan and Wisconsin brought a surge of childhood memories. My dad grew up a northern Wisconsin farm boy. Launched his business in Detroit and we'd make the yearly summer trek to rental homes on Long Lake. Twenty-three cousins (!) Swimming, fishing, shining deer. What a grand, lovely innocence.
peter-I was on the kind of antibiotics last year that is a concern for trying to dodge pneumonia again. You need yogurt with live cultures and several spoonfuls a day. That's what I did for the month I was on them.
Because I am rebuilding all that after getting food poisoning at a famous chef's tapas place near gramercy, I can now add that saurkraut that has never been heated and kimchi also have the desired good sources. I went to whole foods and got it from the refrigerated case.
My reading also said many of the probiotics sold at room temp are not helpful so I bought the Trinity from Natren shipped with dry ice.
One last thing I am doing is adding a teaspoon to tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to 12 oz of bottled water in a glass and drinking once or twice a day. All of the above were obtained from reading since the food poisoning about a month ago.
Good Morning! The author Christina Kline Baker (a Bangor native) who wrote "Orphan Train" is the third woman to accuse George H.W. Bush of groping her. She was at a Barbara Bush literacy event in 2014 where she and her husband had their picture taken with Bush. Bush was in his wheelchair and when Baker stood next to him,he put his arm around her waist and squeezed her butt. A Bush family friend took Baker back to her hotel and said,"I hope you'll be discreet."
Maybe it is time for Barbara to keep George in the house.
Peter,
As rse notes--yogurt helps, but it's not nearly enough.
Kombucha, kim chi, sauerkrout juice from sauerkrout in the grocer's refrigerator, ditto "fresh" pickles---
That apple cider vinegar is a specific brand, that has "the mother" in it--
Braggs.
You can make your own stuff too. Just shred cabbage, fill a quart jar with it, salt it, and poor the liquid from yogurt w live cultures over it.
Let it sit uncovered on the counter for six-eight hours, then cover a stick it in the fridge. In a couple of days you'll have plenty of bugs to drink.
God Bless maryrose! My mother lived with a foster family on a ranch in northern California during her teen years.
That experience was formative for her. She has wonderful memories and affection for her foster family.
Very interesting discussion on Mike & Mike just know.
Seems the NFL Players and their union have taken a page from the Reverand Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton playbook. The Anthem kneeling was a ploy to suck money out of the Owner's and the NFL to redistribute to the inner cities where they play.
I knew it was more than BLM. Always follow the money even when it is hidden.

Posted by: daddy | October 27, 2017 at 03:38 AM
Daddy,
I'm looking at the news feeds, and DNC and others are denying they had anything to do with Fusion.
So nobody's copping to this. So where did the money come from?
Dems are backing off, so where did the money come from?
Russia?

Morning, all. Will do some links after coffee is ready.

Ah, nothing like that first cup of coffee!

The Greek word Apocalypse has taken on the modern meaning of a terrible disaster, but the word as used in the Bible in its original meaning is “unveiling.”

I did a quick search for the origin of the word, and indeed, in comes from ecclesiastical Latin and meant "revealing or unveiling."
We live in such interesting times, don't we?

Interesting observation in a comment at PowerLine. The article talks about how the Senate will soon give an up or down vote for 4 judges. Four. MSM and Dems are calling it a confirmation frenzy.
Is it the case that judgeships can be political payoff?

Posted by: Miss Marple the Deplorable | October 27, 2017 at 06:34 AM
peter, if you type your question into youtube I bet you'll find lots of useful information.

I imagine insurance preferring bulk mail order for maintenance meds put a hurt on pharmacies long before Amazon showed up.

peter-I was on the kind of antibiotics last year that is a concern for trying to dodge pneumonia again.
Posted by: rse | October 27, 2017 at 06:59 AM
I may have asked this before but, speaking of probiotics, does anybody drink or have an opinion on the Suja products?
