After months of Trump's Tweets Jack Shafer has dialed back his Outrage-ometer and thinks the rest of us should too:
Obviously, his tweets, if backed up with action, have the potential to cause people trouble. If for example, he wanted to make life miserable for NBC’s parent company, Comcast, he could. But he’s too cheap to spend that sort of political capital for short-term gain, and he’s too lazy to be the autocrat that his tweets make him out to be. The average Trump Twitter provocation exists, as during the campaign, to reset the news agenda somewhere near a place of his liking.
OK, but perhaps Mr. Shafer is missing the other element to this game - the media has been getting rich (OK, avoiding a complete financial meltdown) by treating every Trump tweet and utterance as Apocalypse Now. Why should they stop and embrace the cool reality that their business model is collapsing?
Hysteria begets ratings. It's almost a big a rush as being first!

From the last thread:
In the business world, the mere accusation of "sexual harassment" is enough to ruin a man. In college, young men's lives are ruined before they even get going, by the mere accusation of vaguely-defined "sexual assault," which in many cases is simply natural human behavior.
Pretty unfair and kind of frightening.
It absolutely is. But I'm perfectly happy to see it happen to HW (and hopefully lots of others in Hollywood).
They are only too happy to support laws and policies that, as you say, ruin the lives of ordinary Americans based only on an accusation. Why shouldn't they be subject to that kind of ruination as well?

What a hack.
He can't just admit controlling the news cycle and field of battle is his intention to begin with. He has to lard it up with snide innuendo that a guy who lives like Midas is cheap and a guy who gets up at 4:00AM every day is lazy.
Cheap and lazy perfectly describes Shafer's methods.

I agree but I do not think it applies in this case:
In addition to the decades of whispers and nods and even comedy skits referring to HW - there is this:
"Farrow had NYPD audio of Weinstein admitting to sexually assaulting a 21-year-old Italian model. And he had video of actress Rose McGowan accusing Harvey of raping her.

Yes, Mom2, the audio was him admitting to grabbing a woman's breast. I'm not sure what the statute of limitations on that is, and the cops decided they didn't have enough evidence to bring a case, but that's not exactly a very serious accusation. (Although if I'm not mistaken, Packwood's life was ruined for trying to kiss women, so I have little sympathy for Weinstein.)
As for McGowan, she didn't even go to the cops. Instead, she accepted $100K to keep quiet about whatever it was that happened, which may or may not have been "rape." I have no sympathy for her. She chose to get paid.

I think one has to look at the victim pool and understand that many of these young women are vulnerable emotionally and financially to begin with.
Secondly, how would we know if she made accusations? Weinstein had bought off the entire press and the entire entertainment community was joking about it at awards shows, with Weinstein laughing about it.

MM,
Please maintain the proper editorial standards in your comments on the JOM blog. The official JOM style guide states, "When using the term 'super-genius' while referring to Democratic spokes holes or drug-addled presidential candidates of the Libertarian Party, the entire word should be capitalized, and the 'u' in 'super' replaced with seven 'o's.
Example: Gary 'Baked Alaska' Johnson, Constitutional SOOOOOOOPER-GENIUS, stated that he felt that religious liberty was a 'legal black hole.'
This demonstrates the proper usage of this term."

David,
I was once a young woman working in a primarily man's profession (geology). I had to deal with a lot of non-geologists in my corporation, and I was well aware of certain managers and how they operated.
However, in a large corporation which had exposure to the federal government through MSHA, there was a degree of protection, plus I am sort of outspoken. I saw more timid souls, particularly secretaries, who had a harder time. I counseled a lot of them to go to HR and request transfers to different departments.
It's all well and good to castigate these women, and I am certain that some were opportunists just as now they were opportunists to claim victimhood, but imagine if your big dream is to get a role in a movie, you're supporting yourself in a very expensive city, and you have no family with you.
This was a ready-made pool of victims. The ones who didn't play along, or who complained? There were probably a lot, but we never heard about them. They probably gave up and went back to Nebraska or Georgia and became local TV or radio celebrities.
Which reminds me about Frances Farmer, who wound up here in Indianapolis hosting the afternoon movie on Channel 8. She had, at one time, been a big star. She was rumored to be an alcoholic, but now I wonder why she took to drink.

Ugh. Identification of victims in the California fires is being done by things like the serial number on a piece of metal which was a hip replacement piece.
They are using cadaver dogs to locate victims, of which not much is left but a few pieces of charred bone.

Good Morning!
Miss M linked this 20 year old story last thread about some Prostitution ring in Paris that lied to and then forced young girls to act as prostitutes for big shots like Robert De Niro: The sex scandal that wouldn't lie down
The only names to emerge so far are De Niro, Fibak and the French film producer, Alain Sarde.
De Niro, despite a much publicised "arrest" in Paris while filming a movie earlier this year, was questioned only as a witness and occasional client of the network's prostitutes.
Well I hope De Niro gets caught in this Harvey Weinstein business. He's a creep who loves going on the View and telling those ugly wenches what a great guy he is because he wants to punch Trump in the face for being a bully.
It wasn’t like I was going to go find him and punch him in the face. But he’s got to hear it. He’s got to hear that, you know, that’s how he makes people feel. It’s not good to feel that way. It’s not good to start that stuff up, but at the same time sometimes when people are bullies like that, that’s what you have to do to shut them up. Bully them back.”
De Niro's a fraud. If he hates bully, why didn't he punch out his good buddy Harvey?
