The NY Times looks at a US push to enhance and expand our defense against North Korean missiles. All interesting but in describing the deployment of offshore drones prepared to shoot rockets in the boost phase they include a rhetorical question which I can answer:
A boost-phase idea getting much notice would be to have drones patrol high over the Sea of Japan, awaiting a North Korean launch. Remote operators would fire heat-sensing rockets that lock onto the rising missiles.
A boost-phase idea getting much notice would be to have drones patrol high over the Sea of Japan, awaiting a North Korean launch. Remote operators would fire heat-sensing rockets that lock onto the rising missiles.
OK, I can tell you why we didn't think of that years ago. Back in the day the original goal of Reagan's "Star Wars" was to defend against Soviet missiles. Unlike North Korea, the USSR was not a relatively small country right next to an ocean. Consequently, unless we thought the Russians would let us fly drones over their land and well inside their air space the drone concept would not be useful.
A Brookings study from 2001 advocated boost-phase defenses against Iran, Iraq and North Korea. A snippet:
Another problem is finding reliable basing. The North Korean threat is the easiest to handle. Because North Korea sits on a peninsula, its missiles can be defended against using sea-based interceptors alone, though a land base on Russian soil near Vladivostok might be worthwhile if Moscow agreed.
Right concept but sea only. They coulda woulda thought of armed drones, which were deployed in Afghanistan in 2001 but really came into their own just a few years later.
How bout that general who refuses to launch nukes if ordered?

"Kinda funny considering that the order chain is –> DoD threat detection –> DoD recommendation –> President issues order codes –> DoD executes.
Given that a Nork ICBM is only 20min from Fairbanks there is not a lot of time for butt scratching and navel gazing."

TM, boost phase is best assuming you know the launch point. Whether you hit that from space (80s to early 90s concept) or locally is a big difference in geography and systems. Drones would work near N Korea, and less so Iran. Drones useless vs Soviets or China. (Mobile launchers like MX were a big deal for that reason). Goodness knows what that USAF (now space force?) unmanned shuttle is up to, but boost phase detect / prevent better be part of it.

I'm aware of the Chinese buying Opera, but I'm not sure what that really means. The basic software is so stable, I doubt it get much tweaking. On the other hand, I can see them sending the code back home to make Chine market versions and/or getting the Norskies to do better quality coding for other apps.

Re the various iOS problems, Mrs MT does all her AT cruising in the morning on her iPhone 7+. She seems to have a virus like problem that drives her nuts. While scrolling through an article, she gets one of those nuisance pop ups the fills the page and can't be escaped out of. I showed her how to hit the x to stop the load and the back < to get to the page she was reading. Then it pops up in a few seconds again.
I've done everything in the Safari settings I can with no benefit. Finally, in desperation, I (gasp!) loaded 11.1. No benefit.

Write reviews?
Concentrate on acting techniques or was it all just on process of the camera, the film process, the editing?

Ross Douthat in the NYTimes:
In the longstanding liberal narrative about Bill Clinton and his scandals, the one pushed by Clinton courtiers and ratified in media coverage of his post-presidency, our 42nd president was only guilty of being a horndog, his affairs were nobody’s business but his family’s, and oral sex with Monica Lewinsky was a small thing that should never have put his presidency in peril.
That narrative could not survive the current wave of outrage over male sexual misconduct.
So now a new one may be forming for the age of Harvey Weinstein and Donald Trump. In this story, Kenneth Starr and the Republicans are still dismissed as partisan witch hunters. But liberals might be willing to concede that the Lewinsky affair was a pretty big deal morally, a clear abuse of sexual power, for which Clinton probably should have been pressured to resign.

Not really reviews so much as film criticism. How the acting, cinematography, screenplay, score etc. combine to make meaning. Basically lit crit as applied to film. They've really expanded the program since I graduated - it's a major now and pretty popular. We were taking classes in a tiny classroom in the oldest building on campus. Now they've got their own creative arts building. Whatever, our time was better. :)

Oh, the beer advocate! When our son comes home, he goes to the liquor store and chooses a bunch of different kinds of beer (I'm not sure if they're stouts, etc., but they're usually dark -- I'm not really a beer aficionado -- he is), and then we rate the different ones, and I check on the beer advocate (he told me about them) to see how I'm doing and I read a few ratings to everyone.
Funny, when the kids were little, we used to rate and score so many things. I'd give paper to the children, and we'd watch Miss World or some beauty pageant and we'd write down our comments. We'd give scores to songs and watch Top of the Pops (England) and see if we'd picked the winners. :) Our kids were fun to play with.

This is getting into dark beer season with the cooler weather: porters, stouts, wee heavies, Christmas ales, winter warmers and old ales. Plus everybody seems to be barrel aging everything, including local breweries, which works out GREAT for me. I admit, I am a trash talker. :) It's sort of a fib that 'I don't talk like that.'
When I decided to up my basketball game by going into the brothers's lion's den, the trash talking was an unintentional side benefit. It was like a carnival of profanity with cadences that were just hilarious. I knew the basketball prowess was a long term project because those beasts were running at Mach 1 and you just don't adapt to that overnight. But the trash talking was an almost immediate transition that worked out well as long as you didn't say anything you couldn't back up.
Once you reach a certain level of ability, confidence is a major factor; and knowing that guys that you used to look up to consider you a peer is a great feeling.

I couldn't trash talk if you gave me a script, but I also am seriously not pleased at my team not even making a bowl (Nebraska, Huskers)--we always make a bowl, but today's 37-56 loss (I think, but it was roughly that) means no bowl, soup or otherwise, for us.

Anybody got the time and ability to explain to me how to properly set up the apple system with 4 phones and 2 ipads on our family plan, the apple cloud and how/why I should set up separate itunes sites for each and how to share the music already purchased on my cloud to all the devices?
I only have one itunes account now and we all share it (been that way since our first apple purchases with the first iphones), but if we need to do a phone upgrade or something all of a sudden I have calls/texts going to all the devices from my device and my contacts and photos suddenly have all my husbands/daughters shared to my phone. Originally we did that as my husband likes to run the 'find my iphone' to keep a watch on me when I travel in case I have a problem. It's a friggin mess and I guess I need to make an appt with the 'geniuses' to get them to set me right.
The hubs wants to upgrade and I refuse til we get this all sorted out.

According to Dawg fans, MUPOT (may UGA piss on them :) ) Georgia should be fielding a 1980 style team final four team every year and with all their "talent," it must be the coaching and Richt was too nice (total Christian and not a Junkyard Dawg) and he was insufficiently dedicated due to his Christian side work during the offseason. And that is according to my UGA Aunt who has a dedicated UGA room in her house and who thinks that she has an auto ride to heaven because my cousin is a pastor. Kinda like some Catholic moms and their priest sons.

Also sad that the Huskers haven't been more successful this year. But my sadness is more about the coach, one of the greatest ATS 'against the spread' coaches in the sport, Mike Reilly, across Oregon State (on the way up and on the way down), SD Chargers and Nebraska.
Mike Reilly is basically the Kent Desermoux, a horse racing jockey with an amazing capacity for improving horses, of football coaching. But he's never been able to take it to the top.

"The calls for cutting back the defense budget come in nice simple arithmetic. They're the same kind of talk that led the democracies to neglect their defenses in the 1930's and invited the tragedy of World War II. We must not let that grim chapter of history repeat itself through apathy or neglect.
This is why I'm speaking to you tonight, to urge you to tell your Senators and Congressmen that you know we must continue to restore our military strength. If we stop in midstream, we will send a signal of decline, of lessened will to friends and adversaries alike. Free people must voluntarily through open debate and democratic means meet the challenge that totalitarians pose by compulsion. It's up to us in our time to choose and choose wisely between the hard but necessary task of preserving peace and freedom and the temptation to ignore our duty and blindly hope for the best while the enemies of freedom grow stronger day by day."--Star Wars Speech, 1983

' Back in the day the original goal of Reagan's "Star Wars" was to defend against Soviet missiles.'
Actually, no. SDI was an economic weapon. The crux of the idea was the 'Soviet Response to the Strategic Defense Initiative', of which good ol' Beasts performed most of the economic analyses - being locked in a SCIF for months on end reading through purloined Soviet economic data; the real data.
We projected the harm that their necessary military spending in response would do to their economy, and saw the fragility of their position. It worked as designed and the USSR is no more.

But it arose out of Reagan's visit to Cheyenne mountain (home of the star gate) some five years before. Certainly teller and the recently deceased George keyworth, future Hp bigwig saw otherwise

There were several former projects which influenced it, narciso, but the full-up original concept - which is still not technologically feasible some thirty years later - would theoretically render all phases and theaters of threat impotent. Their only recourses were to overwhelm the defense capability by volume or advance several technologies - neither of which they could afford.

Hey, you've got to get and read William Davis' Undoctored. He's the Wisconsin cardiologist who had the WheatBelly blog that begot the book series. He does a fabulous job of laying it all out, and it's not complicated--besides eating how you are, do the bowel flora thing w fermented food, vit D, fish oil, magnesium water (he even has the recipe, and is it easy!), iodine. He even has the doses!

Haven't had the time to read it yet Clarice, but the title is killer!
A Fair Hearing by a Jury of His Pervs

Hi A'mom, Hi Henry.
Henry,
Thanks for the info on how to clean out junk in the Safari iPad system. I spent a long time tonight at work manually removing tons of websites that had 0 bits and it seems like the iPad is running faster. Much appreciated.

Janet, if those Christmas lights were little LEDS that lit up I'd have bought that hat in a heart beat and worn it everyday on my circuit, but they are just embroidered on so I'm passing for now.
Too tasteful for me.
Maybe they'll do that for next year---I'll email them!
Hinderaker wrote a real Debbie Downer here, but I'm not arguing with him about it:

Can anybody do a real quick summary of facts re Moore claimants? I need to let my mother know why the good people of Alabama may well vote him in, despite her information from her "friend" Gail on GMA.
That it doesn't mean they are a bunch of red necked imbiciles.
(You'd think she'd have learned by now not to bring this stuff up to me.)
That initial claimant has how many similar complaints against ministers?
She was actually 16, not 14 the year she says this happened? T of F?
The other women were of age, or have walked back what he said to them as flirting?
And that yearbook thing is extremely likely to be a forgery?

from Jeffrey V. -
"So here's where the Roy Moore bullshit stands.
- Three 17 year olds - totally legal, no sex, no assault, common in that era. A Nothingburger.
- A 16 Year Old assaulted - completely discredited as a forgery put out by a shrew pissed off at the judge in her divorce case. She should face criminal prosecution
- A mall cop claiming Moore was banned from a Mall. Countered by the mall manager
- A 14 year old who he supposedly kissed and felt over her clothes on a 2nd date. No force. Also no evidence of her age or the events. A recollection from 40 years ago from a woman who "says that her teenage life became increasingly reckless with drinking, drugs, boyfriends, and a suicide attempt when she was 16." How much accurate detail does the average drug filled person remember from a date in 1977? I've had long relationships that I barely remember. No evidence.
- Someone who claims they were groped in 1991 in public. No evidence. The accuser has convictions for writing bad checks. Now it's just jumping on the bandwagon time.
In other words, there was no sex and there's no evidence. None of this came out in any previous high profile election. Only now with the media riding Weinstein and the Senate in the balance.
I'd like to see how ANYONE could fare better given a swarm of reporters and the focus of both major political parties. You think you'd fare better? You think the other Senators would?
I hope Moore wins by 20 points"

Betting site favors Judge Moore opponent.

"Looking to make money off the Alabama special Senate election? Bettors think Roy Moore's Democratic opponent Doug Jones is now the safer gamble, according to the prediction market PredictIt on Thursday."
However ...
"Voter polls still have Moore with a slight edge over Jones, though."
Posted by: JimNorCal | November 19, 2017 at 07:15 AM
The Alabama vote is between:
Conservative Roy Moore (R)
&
Liberal Doug Jones (D)
That is it. Look at their agendas.
The 'Roy Moore Lynching Show' is being put on by the Dem/Media/Rino Production Company to discourage conservative voters.
a bit on Jones -
Democrat Doug Jones, Moore’s opponent, has some noteworthy positions. He’s pro-prenatal infanticide. ...
Jones supports de-facto amnesty,...
Jones supports the regulation of carbon dioxide...
Jones advocates the unscientific, socially disastrous “transgender” agenda....
Jones advocates using taxpayer money to fund fanciful, economically unviable energy schemes...
he doesn’t believe in cutting your taxes to spur economic growth...
Jones opposes rescinding [Obamacare]...

I wish I could argue with that Hindracker piece, anonamom, but I can't.
Especially because, based on their behavior to date, I don't think Ryan, McConnell et al have any problem at all with the scenario laid out there.

Jones advocates the unscientific, socially disastrous “transgender” agenda....
Imagine if we had any kind of fair MFM that made Jones explain how men that say they are women really are women.
Make him explain that insanity.
Make him tell the voters the science behind that belief.
Ya know what is really creepy?
Expecting high school girls to undress in front of a mentally ill BOY in gym class.
Teaching children a LIE.
