How bout that general who refuses to launch nukes if ordered?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5095963/amp/General-says-REFUSE-Trump-s-nuclear-order.html
"Kinda funny considering that the order chain is –> DoD threat detection –> DoD recommendation –> President issues order codes –> DoD executes.

Given that a Nork ICBM is only 20min from Fairbanks there is not a lot of time for butt scratching and navel gazing."

henry

TM, boost phase is best assuming you know the launch point. Whether you hit that from space (80s to early 90s concept) or locally is a big difference in geography and systems. Drones would work near N Korea, and less so Iran. Drones useless vs Soviets or China. (Mobile launchers like MX were a big deal for that reason). Goodness knows what that USAF (now space force?) unmanned shuttle is up to, but boost phase detect / prevent better be part of it.

Manuel Transmission

Crap, just posted on the old one:

Davod,

I'm aware of the Chinese buying Opera, but I'm not sure what that really means. The basic software is so stable, I doubt it get much tweaking. On the other hand, I can see them sending the code back home to make Chine market versions and/or getting the Norskies to do better quality coding for other apps.

daddy,

I have been buying throat lozenges by the case for a low grade problem that seems perennial. My fave is Halls 'Triple Soothing Action' in Winter Menthol sugar free. It shows 4 out of 5 on their strength scale.

Re the various iOS problems, Mrs MT does all her AT cruising in the morning on her iPhone 7+. She seems to have a virus like problem that drives her nuts. While scrolling through an article, she gets one of those nuisance pop ups the fills the page and can't be escaped out of. I showed her how to hit the x to stop the load and the back < to get to the page she was reading. Then it pops up in a few seconds again.

I've done everything in the Safari settings I can with no benefit. Finally, in desperation, I (gasp!) loaded 11.1. No benefit.

Anyone else fighting an AT spam problem?

Porch: 7:10: "Thanks for this comment, MM. A Christmas Story is easily in my top five favorites, maybe number one, and I say that as a cinema studies minor, as well as a Christmas-loving American.
I consider it to be a near-perfect movie.
RIP, Bob Clark (the director) and son. They were killed in a head-on collision by an illegal. RIP, Darren McGavin."

Cinema studies! That must have been interesting and fun. My sister and I took a semester class in movie reviewing at TU. I loved it.

(Liked Darren McGavin, too.)

Here is an interesting interview with Orson Bean, about old Hollywood, Johnny Carson, etc.

https://amgreatness.com/2017/11/18/orson-bean-and-chris-buskirk-on-old-hollywood-and-love-for-america/

henry

Man Tran, I find I need to delete all stored data a few times in system / safari then the problem eases. It is important to go to edit, then suffer deleting everything manually including all the "0" space ones. Just one redirect hiding in there hoses you.

Porchlight

Cinema studies! That must have been interesting and fun.

It was! We watched everything on real film, too. If it wasn't available in reel to reel, we didn't watch it. We really couldn't - the technology wasn't there and the professors refused to use VHS.

My favorite film prof was also one of my favorite English profs (my major). Great guy.

 joan

Did you analyze screen plays?
Write reviews?
Concentrate on acting techniques or was it all just on process of the camera, the film process, the editing?
Must have been so interesting.

Neo

Ross Douthat in the NYTimes:

In the longstanding liberal narrative about Bill Clinton and his scandals, the one pushed by Clinton courtiers and ratified in media coverage of his post-presidency, our 42nd president was only guilty of being a horndog, his affairs were nobody’s business but his family’s, and oral sex with Monica Lewinsky was a small thing that should never have put his presidency in peril.

That narrative could not survive the current wave of outrage over male sexual misconduct.

So now a new one may be forming for the age of Harvey Weinstein and Donald Trump. In this story, Kenneth Starr and the Republicans are still dismissed as partisan witch hunters. But liberals might be willing to concede that the Lewinsky affair was a pretty big deal morally, a clear abuse of sexual power, for which Clinton probably should have been pressured to resign.

Not really reviews so much as film criticism. How the acting, cinematography, screenplay, score etc. combine to make meaning. Basically lit crit as applied to film. They've really expanded the program since I graduated - it's a major now and pretty popular. We were taking classes in a tiny classroom in the oldest building on campus. Now they've got their own creative arts building. Whatever, our time was better. :)

 narcisoyea

Does douthat ever turn out any take that is not rote and uninteresting, rhetorical.

I'm no aerospace wiz, but drones cant carry the kind ordinance that can take missiles in boost phase.

Another Bob

JimNorCal | November 18, 2017 at 07:16 PM

That was a clickbait headline. General said nothing other than standard doctrine for illegal orders, which is what we'd want him to say. I want to know who asked the question.

Mattis is in the NCA chain. I suspect if Mattis' NCA-required opinion is an approval, there wont be an issue. And I don't see Trump going there without Mattis.

Manuel Transmission

henry,

I have her running on Brave right now without any problem. When she is off, I will try that. I did blast everything in the Settings folder under Safari, but that didn't make any difference.

Aw, it was crap the way KU acted. I thought they were better than that. The targeting was called, there wasn't any kind of flag thrown on that hit. There were also several late hits that didn't get called. I thought the worst thing, though, was refusing to shake an opponent's hand.

Mayfield's taken absolute crap from opposing fans all season. I'm sure people will say 'that's part of it', but curses and other crap has rained down on the Sooner bench at every opponent's field. I'm sure it gets tiresome.

 joan

Sorry, the targeting wasn't called.

The announcers were scandalized at Mayfield. Absolutely scandalized, they spent the next quarter and then some discussing how "we don't act like that, etc." I ended up calling them pussies and bitches in front of my husband. :( He doesn't talk like that (well, ordinarily I don't either.)

Toward the end of the game, we turned the sound off and I played Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam, George Strait, Vince Gill, Reba McIntire, Garth Brooks -- I went totally country for a while.

joan that's awesome. that's also a bat signal for stephanie to show up and start takin trash. always makes my day :-)

Oh, the beer advocate! When our son comes home, he goes to the liquor store and chooses a bunch of different kinds of beer (I'm not sure if they're stouts, etc., but they're usually dark -- I'm not really a beer aficionado -- he is), and then we rate the different ones, and I check on the beer advocate (he told me about them) to see how I'm doing and I read a few ratings to everyone.

Funny, when the kids were little, we used to rate and score so many things. I'd give paper to the children, and we'd watch Miss World or some beauty pageant and we'd write down our comments. We'd give scores to songs and watch Top of the Pops (England) and see if we'd picked the winners. :) Our kids were fun to play with.

But my husband is good, and I'm glad.

Captain Hate

When our son comes home, he goes to the liquor store and chooses a bunch of different kinds of beer (I'm not sure if they're stouts, etc., but they're usually dark

This is getting into dark beer season with the cooler weather: porters, stouts, wee heavies, Christmas ales, winter warmers and old ales. Plus everybody seems to be barrel aging everything, including local breweries, which works out GREAT for me. Because I've got a cold I'm polishing off my pumpkin ales rather than banging the malt bombs. Gotta admit that it's curbing my cough really well.

Stephanie Nene Not your normal Grandma

that's also a bat signal for stephanie to show up and start takin trash. always makes my day :-)

Say whut?

My fn Jackets aren't even bowl eligible this year. Any bets that Coach gets the heave ho after the Georgia game? As usual I blame the defensive coaching not the offensive. Damn Ted Poof and his ties to Tech, he still sux as a DCoordinator. Pfft.

I need a new team to root for to finish out the season. I'm thinking maybe the U but I have a hard time rooting for a team with a former GA coach. Decisions. Decisions.

Captain Hate

I admit, I am a trash talker. :) It's sort of a fib that 'I don't talk like that.'

When I decided to up my basketball game by going into the brothers's lion's den, the trash talking was an unintentional side benefit. It was like a carnival of profanity with cadences that were just hilarious. I knew the basketball prowess was a long term project because those beasts were running at Mach 1 and you just don't adapt to that overnight. But the trash talking was an almost immediate transition that worked out well as long as you didn't say anything you couldn't back up.

Once you reach a certain level of ability, confidence is a major factor; and knowing that guys that you used to look up to consider you a peer is a great feeling.

 narcisoyea

Just throw darts at the remaining team. For a change of pace I was reading frederich raphaels Bo of flavius Josephus which really serves as a template for examining Jewish roman relations going back to the 2nd century and forward

Catsmeat

I couldn't trash talk if you gave me a script, but I also am seriously not pleased at my team not even making a bowl (Nebraska, Huskers)--we always make a bowl, but today's 37-56 loss (I think, but it was roughly that) means no bowl, soup or otherwise, for us.

Stephanie Nene Not your normal Grandma

I run FF on my laptop as I use embedded pdf for my work and every few upgrades it screws up the embed and I have to move over to chrome for a while til the developers get FF up and running again but it has a lot of gaps where our software enhancements don't really run right. Annoys the crap out of me. And almost none of our software works in Explorer at all which our users bitch about.

BTW what is the big deal about Kaspersky? I run it on my home desktop as it is the one my network analyst son swears by, but it seems I'm supporting the bad guys or something according to the government. Should I be worried about a no knock raid with all my pro Trump posts? :)

Captain Hate

Why did the Dawgs give up on Richt? He was there for a **long** time so this wasn't some impulsive snap decision. Neither school is known for holding the jocks to high academic standards. Maybe he just needed a change with new assistants.

henry

I learned trash talking playing pool with the local car wash crew. Once I stopped laughing long enough to talk back that is. ;)

mad jack

Catsmeat, I'm old enough to remember when Nebraska was the gold standard of Midwestern power football. I used to work with somebody recruited by Bob Devaney who would tell me what an impressive person he was. So I understand where you're coming from.

Anybody got the time and ability to explain to me how to properly set up the apple system with 4 phones and 2 ipads on our family plan, the apple cloud and how/why I should set up separate itunes sites for each and how to share the music already purchased on my cloud to all the devices?

I only have one itunes account now and we all share it (been that way since our first apple purchases with the first iphones), but if we need to do a phone upgrade or something all of a sudden I have calls/texts going to all the devices from my device and my contacts and photos suddenly have all my husbands/daughters shared to my phone. Originally we did that as my husband likes to run the 'find my iphone' to keep a watch on me when I travel in case I have a problem. It's a friggin mess and I guess I need to make an appt with the 'geniuses' to get them to set me right.

The hubs wants to upgrade and I refuse til we get this all sorted out.

Momto2

Stephanie - you can join me in cheering for Auburn - they *could* get to play Ga. again...
My uncle went to Tech and I grew up singing "I'd dress her in white and gold..."

Catsmeat

Yep, CH, the stadium lists at the top the five national championship years but the last was rather a while ago. The team flails--and the poor Husker fans wilt, or get over-manly, or equivocate, or re-group--each to his own. I always prefer to look to the future--let the dead past bury its dead.

Catsmeat

Well, long day tomorrow--a good night to all!

Stephanie Nene Not your normal Grandma

Why did the Dawgs give up on Richt? He was there for a **long** time so this wasn't some impulsive snap decision. Neither school is known for holding the jocks to high academic standards. Maybe he just needed a change with new assistants.

According to Dawg fans, MUPOT (may UGA piss on them :) ) Georgia should be fielding a 1980 style team final four team every year and with all their "talent," it must be the coaching and Richt was too nice (total Christian and not a Junkyard Dawg) and he was insufficiently dedicated due to his Christian side work during the offseason. And that is according to my UGA Aunt who has a dedicated UGA room in her house and who thinks that she has an auto ride to heaven because my cousin is a pastor. Kinda like some Catholic moms and their priest sons.

Captain Hate

The wind is really howling here (although with the windows we had put in a few years ago you have to look outside to figure that out) and it's shifted from the south to the northwest. So I'm guessing that I'll wake up to snow on the ground and all the trees bare of leaves.

IOW, pretty normal for this time of the year.

Captain Hate

he was insufficiently dedicated due to his Christian side work during the offseason.

LOL. I love this type of analysis.

Stephanie Nene Not your normal Grandma

I like Auburn except that an ex fiance MTWDEPOH (may the War Damn Eagle piss on him) is a huge fan.

S'ok though, when we split, I got the 450SL. He wanted it back but stupidly put the title in my name. Ha! Come and get it wuss! He never did, but was stuck with the payments which he put on his company's 90 day revolving credit line at the bank - which at the time was like 12% interest. Derp.

Also sad that the Huskers haven't been more successful this year. But my sadness is more about the coach, one of the greatest ATS 'against the spread' coaches in the sport, Mike Reilly, across Oregon State (on the way up and on the way down), SD Chargers and Nebraska.

Mike Reilly is basically the Kent Desermoux, a horse racing jockey with an amazing capacity for improving horses, of football coaching. But he's never been able to take it to the top.

The Gipper Lives

"The calls for cutting back the defense budget come in nice simple arithmetic. They're the same kind of talk that led the democracies to neglect their defenses in the 1930's and invited the tragedy of World War II. We must not let that grim chapter of history repeat itself through apathy or neglect.

This is why I'm speaking to you tonight, to urge you to tell your Senators and Congressmen that you know we must continue to restore our military strength. If we stop in midstream, we will send a signal of decline, of lessened will to friends and adversaries alike. Free people must voluntarily through open debate and democratic means meet the challenge that totalitarians pose by compulsion. It's up to us in our time to choose and choose wisely between the hard but necessary task of preserving peace and freedom and the temptation to ignore our duty and blindly hope for the best while the enemies of freedom grow stronger day by day."--Star Wars Speech, 1983

Beasts of England

' Back in the day the original goal of Reagan's "Star Wars" was to defend against Soviet missiles.'

Actually, no. SDI was an economic weapon. The crux of the idea was the 'Soviet Response to the Strategic Defense Initiative', of which good ol' Beasts performed most of the economic analyses - being locked in a SCIF for months on end reading through purloined Soviet economic data; the real data.

We projected the harm that their necessary military spending in response would do to their economy, and saw the fragility of their position. It worked as designed and the USSR is no more.

Threadkiller

I second CH, Skoot. Thanks.

 narcisoyea

But it arose out of Reagan's visit to Cheyenne mountain (home of the star gate) some five years before. Certainly teller and the recently deceased George keyworth, future Hp bigwig saw otherwise

Beasts of England

There were several former projects which influenced it, narciso, but the full-up original concept - which is still not technologically feasible some thirty years later - would theoretically render all phases and theaters of threat impotent. Their only recourses were to overwhelm the defense capability by volume or advance several technologies - neither of which they could afford.

Can anybody do a real quick summary of facts re Moore claimants? I need to let my mother know why the good people of Alabama may well vote him in, despite her information from her "friend" Gail on GMA.
That it doesn't mean they are a bunch of red necked imbiciles.
(You'd think she'd have learned by now not to bring this stuff up to me.)

That initial claimant has how many similar complaints against ministers?
She was actually 16, not 14 the year she says this happened? T of F?
The other women were of age, or have walked back what he said to them as flirting?
And that yearbook thing is extremely likely to be a forgery?

Janet 🚬

from Jeffrey V. -

"So here's where the Roy Moore bullshit stands.

- Three 17 year olds - totally legal, no sex, no assault, common in that era. A Nothingburger.
- A 16 Year Old assaulted - completely discredited as a forgery put out by a shrew pissed off at the judge in her divorce case. She should face criminal prosecution
- A mall cop claiming Moore was banned from a Mall. Countered by the mall manager
- A 14 year old who he supposedly kissed and felt over her clothes on a 2nd date. No force. Also no evidence of her age or the events. A recollection from 40 years ago from a woman who "says that her teenage life became increasingly reckless with drinking, drugs, boyfriends, and a suicide attempt when she was 16." How much accurate detail does the average drug filled person remember from a date in 1977? I've had long relationships that I barely remember. No evidence.
- Someone who claims they were groped in 1991 in public. No evidence. The accuser has convictions for writing bad checks. Now it's just jumping on the bandwagon time.

In other words, there was no sex and there's no evidence. None of this came out in any previous high profile election. Only now with the media riding Weinstein and the Senate in the balance.

I'd like to see how ANYONE could fare better given a swarm of reporters and the focus of both major political parties. You think you'd fare better? You think the other Senators would?

I hope Moore wins by 20 points"

The 'Roy Moore Lynching Show' is being put on by the Dem/Media/Rino Production Company to discourage conservative voters.

a bit on Jones -
Democrat Doug Jones, Moore’s opponent, has some noteworthy positions. He’s pro-prenatal infanticide. ...
Jones supports de-facto amnesty,...
Jones supports the regulation of carbon dioxide...
Jones advocates the unscientific, socially disastrous “transgender” agenda....
Jones advocates using taxpayer money to fund fanciful, economically unviable energy schemes...
he doesn’t believe in cutting your taxes to spur economic growth...
Jones opposes rescinding [Obamacare]...
