>>>he mentioned that the sexual harassment payouts aren't in a "secret fund" but also includes other types of employee payouts<<<

this doesn't seem right, but I don't know. Would think that law and insurance would require different types of accounts? Someone breaking her arm on Capitol Hill and a member grabbing the ass of a 20 year old intern just seem like different issues. It could also be one of those DC "secret not a secrets" like the House banking scandal (members kiting checks) and the House Post Office scandal (abusing the franking privilege).

Burn the place down, finish the job the Brits couldn't in 1814, then move them all to Kansas.

henry

Miss M, on O'Neill in Ohio. Are the Dems clearing the field for Cordray? He's an Obama guy, and that's an Obama move.

henry

rich, GAAP only applies to the private sector. DC accounting is fraud piled on fraud. Intentionally as far as I can tell.

derwill

--He might be running interference for Moore in an effort to suck up all the sexual harassment oxygen in the room.--

Oh, please. Al Franken seems to be making a good job of that right now all on his own.

And Franken is just the latest in a long string of liberal donors/media personalities/Hollywood denizens who've been sacrificed on the Get Trump Altar, if that is the plan. Let's take Joe Biden, please. It wasn't that long ago that there was an obvious journOlist rollout of stories about how Biden would make the perfect candidate to run against Trump in 2020. Today there are dozens of photos splashed all over the internet of Biden acting pervy around little girls. So how's that brilliant plan working out again?

I suppose it's possible that the Dems/GOPe really are that stupid, but off the top of my head I can come up with four good reasons why it won't work.

1) Trump fights back, and he's not afraid to fight back dirty. And they have no idea what dirt he has on them. (And you can bet there is dirt to be had.)

2) Trump has already faced groping charges during the campaign, weathered them and is now in the WH. Old news, as Hillary would say.

3) So many revelations are coming at us about so many people everyday that I think we've just about reached a saturation point. It's just sex and everybody does it, right Dems?

4) Trump's base, the deplorables, are "woke" to these old tricks. They might work on someone like Moore, but they aren't going to work when it comes to Trump, who the MSM has been telling us for two years now is Literally Hitler, right? And yet they still voted for him.

>>>I bet a lot of these aging Hollywood types would behave a lot more like humans if they stepped away from their Doctor Feelgood and the low-T patches that are being waaay over-prescribed.<<<

a quick note on my 1256, McCain sponsored legislation that effectively banned pro-hormones by redefining them as steroids (various legislation did the same and Obama signed it). iirc a pharma company then re-branded their pro-hormone products (already banned by the NCAA and by most professional leagues) as prescription medication. One wonders why Luck is going to Europe to get his shoulder fixed?

Of course, what you post suggests that the latest sexual harassment uprising is not a conspiracy, but just a happening. I agree with that. I don't see a conservative media figure in California as a participant in some big plot to give up a few Democrat pawns to bag the Republican king.

When it comes to Biden, I have wondered when the smirky snarky pictures of his busy hands would translate into something else. Haven't seen it yet, though. We're still at the smirk and snark stage, it seems.

What I see, and what you think is a sign of being as stupid as a stump, is that Trump has unfinished business in the sexual harassment sphere. There is at least one active litigation going on now, so it hasn't gone entirely away yet:

http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/15/politics/trump-campaign-subpoena-sexual-assault-allegations/index.html

A lot of people here have convinced themselves of a tortured reading of the Billy Bush tape, and can't imagine that Trump, having talked a certain way, would actually act a certain way. There are people with more imagination than that, and plenty of lawyers around looking for that big pay day. That's why this is unfinished business, even if it takes cognitive impairment to see it.

derwill

To me, the most likely thing that is going on here is that these people have been sexually assaulting and harassing women around them for years, because that's who they are. And they got away with it because they're rich and powerful and have connections, and the behavior is so pervasive that they protect each other. But once the dam broke with Weinstein, that encouraged more women to come out with their stories.

Frankly, I could tell a story myself about a very famous person, but I won't because he took no for an answer and this was back in the 70s when women figured getting the occasional proposition was how the world worked, and as long as the guy didn't force himself on you, you just shrugged it off. But my point is if I wanted to I could accuse him today of pressing me to have sex with him and how that made me feel uncomfortable--which it did; but to be frank, I was also flattered. Hey, I was 24 and he was famous.

From what I understand, the Shush Fund mandates that the victim attend a 30 day course of counseling before mediation. If mediation doesn't resolve the issue, then the victim can pursue an administrative hearing or federal lawsuit. I'm sure this lengthy, backwards process is meant to persuade the victim to go away.

Isn't it interesting that the Congressional Accountability Act (including the Shush Fund) was enacted in 1995, the same year Jethro soiled Monica's dress.

Clarice Feldman

narciso, where did you see that Mrs Nelson said she didn't see Morre sign the yearbook?

derwill

The funny thing is, MM, if I were a Democrat I would be wanting them to shut up about impeachment. Because impeachment (which occurs in the House) would not remove Trump from office, only a conviction in the Senate would do that, and that requires a 2/3 vote. And all one has to do to see how impossible that would be is to take a look at the number of states who voted for Trump and the margins of the vote, and you would see that 2/3 is never going to happen.

What the process would do, though, is upset the independents, who really, really hate nasty partisan stuff like that, and the resultant blowback could end up hurting the Dems a lot more than it would hurt Trump.

On top of that, a lot of deplorables are furious with GOPe right now, and might want to stay home in 2018, but won't if that means a Dem congress who will try to impeach Trump.

Pelosie herself has said impeachment is off the table. She's not the brightest bulb, so if even she can see the possible downside to her party, you know it's there.

Not sure how that would go over in Minnesota, but it would get rid of him at the DNC.

Frankly, the deterioration of the democrat party is amazing to me, since I grew up in a democrat household. My dad was a Truman democrat and voted dem his entire life. He would be horrified at what it's become.

I do think the GOP is heading down a destructive path as well unless they can get with the Trump program. Trump may not have the "experience" of a Karl Rove, but he instinctively knew that there was nowhere for the blue collar and lower income white collar workers to go and he made a place for them in the GOP. It would be stupid to throw that gift away which is what the NeverTrumpers want to do.

A lot of people here have convinced themselves of a tortured reading of the Billy Bush tape

The most common "tortured reading" is that "Trump admitted to sexually assaulting women." I hear that all the time when I have the misfortune of being subjected to NPR, CNN, MSNBC, etc.

On a more general note, if a guy moving his hand to a woman's breasts or crotch while on a date (without first asking permission) amounts to assault, then every guy who's ever lived would be a felon. The whole thing has gotten completely out of hand.

derwill

I think it's biological, Miss M. From back when the male of the species felt the urge to procreate, and a girl just past puberty was more likely to survive multiple childbirths before one finally killed her. Conversely, young women of marriageable age were drawn to men who could provide for them and protect them, and not some callow youth still earning his spurs.

My brain is fried. Taking the day off. I'll have a seizure if I see another Excel spreadsheet.

Time for some scattered musings over male inclinations on the younger, fairer sex and today's EmoCratic Conundrums a la Al FrankenDoosh.

Here goes....

I was home from college one summer when a 14 year old soon-to-be high schooler decided she would keep up with her 15 year old sister's exploits.

Found myself in her crosshairs and "weak in spirit", a fateful co-incidence.

The Devil was laughing his gardoonz off at me as I tried to look away from her parading around in her Speedo (she was on my sisters' "swim team" and I was on the homeowners association crew of "attendants" minding the gate to the swimming pool where the youth swim teams worked out....yes. I was that perv.)
This was in 1974 in northern LA county, Valencia CA home of the largest bedroom community on Earth and "Magic Mountain."

12 year olds were dropping peyote and magic mushrooms to give you some idea as to how fast "youth" were living back then.

Her parents found out about the "goings on" and fortunately for me we didn't consummate as the saying goes. Had we, I'd a been shipped to Avenal State pen.

The parents were strange about it. We were allowed to continue to "see" each other but there was "a line drawn". "Mom" had her own agenda. She was 35. You get the picture. The "age gate" swings both ways I found out that summer. It kept me outta jail.

Daughter looked 21 and was 5'11". She was a carbon-copy of "Mom". Weird scenes inside the gold mine. Remember that old commercial where the teen boy is bamboozled by his girl-friends mom? "But...but...but I thought you were Dale!"

I was always attracted to younger girls til I got married (at 22) and such became verboten for real (church weddin and all). Older females continued to be a challenge working on college campuses all of those years. What a hotbed of desperation.

The feminazis hadn't become so dominant back in the 80s out in rural southern Illinois.

It was still a wide-open country music kind of scenario.

Alcohol, weed, guns and pickup trucks with Sunday barbecues.

Pollatix wasn't anywhere cept the front pages in them days. The Reagan era.

Some people had a case of the ass over Ronnie Ray Gunz but we were free to live our lives and engage in carnal behavior to our liking according to our moral codes, such as those were.

Sting was big back then but only in the inner progressive circles. The metrosexual stuff was way way off still.

Nowadays, I find young females (under 40) to be nuisant blabber mouths who don't know shit from shinola. The internet and social media has only made it worse. The original thought--- today's real endangered species. But I digress.

I do think males can outlive or grow out of our attractions to jail bait.

But for some dudes I've known favoring "young" is like the life-long devotee to a specific female body part, you know, the "I'm a (insert part here) man!" Never went the way of *that* type of obsession.

Shifting gears here... (ya i know, YAWN!)

I wish that lady who Frankendoosh pawed and slimed with his germy tongue had played up to him and channeled her inner Lo-reena! and superglued his fallen bishop to his forehead. Write a skit about that, Dingleberry.

I can't imagine how Minnesota fell as far as they did from a senator with integrity like Paul Wellstone (plane accident..hmmm) - even though he was a liberal lefty icon- to a complete pantload like Franken.

I always thought Wellstone was offed by the Clinton machine to make way for another idiot like Turbin Durban and some of the other reptilian democrats still roaming the earth.

And how is it that with all of this conscience laundering going on over ass grabbing and groping (try regulating that) there isn't a single journalist looking into the manifests for the private jets flying down to Epstein's fantasy island where "all their dreams come true"???

All this talk of the younger side of the human sexual equation reminds of that Ken Keysey movie where an inmate is rationalizing his misdeed to Big Chief.

Kevlar Kid,

When I worked for the coal company as a geologist, there were a LOT of young secretaries.

One of the guy's wives called them "Sexretaries" because a LOT of them were interested in snagging a guy with a large income and they weren't particularly upset if he was already married.

This was the mid-70's and the height of the "swinging singles " and all of that stuff. Hot pants and mini skirts, etc. It wasn't exactly a cloister at that time, if you get my drift.

I am dubious about people claiming stuff from that era because it was a time when a lot of norms were being violated, and it's easy to conjure something up because people have forgotten what it was like then.

I am especially dubious about Alabama because at that time it was pretty much still traditional and I cannot imagine a guy trying to pick up, let alone assault, a 14-year old UNLESS she was one of those girls who looked a lot older and he didn't know.

I am not particularly fond of Moore but I really do smell a rat in this entire episode.

Back at the time that Billy Bush tape was made, you cold have combed this country far and wide to find a woman who WOULDN'T let Trump kiss them, and many even more personal acts. My own sister (who now hates Trump because he's Republican) had a crush on him and watched Tha Apprentice every week, and insisted that you could get great business ideas from the program.

I personally think that was HER version of wishful thinking. Ha!

Why are you so fixated on that stupid tape? Do you think it's going to change any minds now? I worked for a coal mining company and overheard far worse stuff. Men brag about things all of the time. Means nothing.

Women do it too, but on different subjects.

Give it up.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Appalled seems to be a modern-day version of a Puritan.

Probably he would fit right in with Kristol and Lowry's crew.

Let me explain this to you, Appalled.

Franken and Weinstein and the like behave like they do because they are NOT attractive to women. Hence they force themselves upon women.

Trump didn't have to. He was attractive (and for a 71-year old guy, still not bad) and RICH! (You may imagine those capital letters in gold and sparklies.) Women were falling all over him. He didn't have to assault anyone, and I would be surprised if he didn't have to fend off female assaults.

Which brings me to the subject of Stephen Mnuchin, Treasury Secretary. He's obviously a nerdy guy who is very brainy and RICH. His wealth has made him more attractive, so he has the very beautiful wife and always appears like he is thrilled to have hit the jackpot. He also seems to be very happy in the cabinet, like he got asked to sit at the cool kids table. I quite like him. I like his wife, too, who seems to love him for more than his bank account, although I am pretty sure that was part of the initial attraction.

Ah, the Trump Administration: money and hot model wives!

I hope the democrats run Elizabeth Warren. They will probably have to as she is the only one without a sex scandal. HA!

I feel like I should tell Appalled something but I can't figure out what.

Moore's (original) law was in re: the doubled capacity of circuits on silicone wafers every few years, Porch. It's a nerd joke. Not that you're not a nerd... ;)

One would need to look at the specific state statute of limitations for battery, mad jack, not only in regard to the basic statute of limitations, but also with respect to whether the statute stops running while the suspect is out of state. Groping would constitute battery, I would think, in most states, although it typically wouldn't be prosecuted in a he said/she said context.

Battery against a minor may have a longer statute of limitations, as would any physical attack constituting a felony under applicable state law.

In other words, depending on the circumstances, the evidence and a prosecutor's willingness to pursue the case, some of these crimes might still be prosecutable. My recollection is that in NY State, Weinstein may be the subject of a criminal investigation.

Thomas--the case being pursued against Weinstein in New York is for an actual rape, and that allegedly occurred only seven years ago.
