if the NFL owners have not yet lost your confidence this may tip you over the edge:
Debilitated Players Accuse N.F.L. of Stalling on Settlement Payments
The families of debilitated former N.F.L. players say the league is obstructing their access to an estimated $1 billion settlement over concussions by reflexively rejecting valid claims and bogging down the process with unreasonable demands.
After a contentious five-year fight between the league and many former players who had accused the N.F.L. of hiding the dangers of head trauma, the two sides agreed in 2015 to a settlement that covers nearly every former player for the next 65 years.
Now the families and their lawyers describe a succession of roadblocks as they try to claim payouts, from as little as a few thousand dollars to potentially several million dollars, to help thousands of retired players left mentally infirm, in some cases severely, from years of hits and tackles on the league’s fields.
Of 1,400 claims filed so far, 140 have been approved, which legal experts say is startlingly low. The remaining 90 percent of those claims are in the process of being evaluated or have been sent back to the players and their lawyers to amend before they can be approved.
Playing football is hazardous to your health. Also hazardous to your health? Getting between these owners and a stray nickel.
I hope the approved payments aren't contingent on attendance figures.

Ha! GUS. That made me thing of Der' Bingle, and him marrying his last wife, when he was 50 and she was 20:
“I was so innocent, just out from Texas. I asked him if he liked baseball. I didn’t know that he owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, a big baseball team. And then I asked if he liked race horses. Again I didn’t know that he’d built Del Mar racetrack in California.
There was so much of his life that I didn’t know about. He was very happy with my ignorance and then we discovered the world together…”

It has always been easy to despise the Spanos goofs--father and sons--that have been the Chargers ownership for the last 25 plus years. They made their money in shlock apartments in Stockton, CA then came to San Diego. Of course now they are getting hosed with their ill-timed move to Los Angeles,so there is some justice in the world.

Thanks, GUS.
She is home and hollering, but in anger not so much in pain. It's dark and cold here, 19F, with patches of ice and snow all over, and she said some dog on the trail came out of the dark running from something at full speed and slammed into her leg and knocked her upside down. She came in walking but limping like Chester from "Gunsmoke", and there was a big baseball diameter bulge in her lower leg I could see poking though the shin area of her tight walking pants, so she said she didn't want to look cause she might puke but she was going to pull her pants leg up and if I saw a bone protruding I was supposed to say the number "1" instead of "Holy S***", and if there was no bone protruding I was supposed to say the number "2". Momma's like that:)
So I said "2", and then she asked "How much Blood?", and I said "just a hell of a bruise but no external blood", so upstairs she limped with the ice pack and I'm in the den with the TV remote control phaser in my hand and the 3 stinkers at my side, pulling standby duty. Crisis currently manageable!

Go To Hell, Duke!

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/accurate-blood-pressure-measurement-is-real-core-message-of-new-guidelines/article36977541/
Decent reporting on the new blood pressure guidelines.
Lost in some of the reporting is the need for ACCURATE blood pressure monitoring.
Old cutoff was 140/90 New cutoff is 130/80.
The underlying new guidelines are in a 481 page document, so expect the press and doctors to miss a lot of nuances. Doesn't push drugs, but advocates lifestyle changes.
Quote - "Practically, that means reducing salt intake, being more physically active, moderating alcohol consumption, not smoking, watch the scales, getting more sleep, eating more fruits and vegetables and all that other healthy stuff that most people don't do."
Money quote:
"Right now, we do a terrible job of measuring blood pressure. That's because blood pressure can fluctuate wildly, especially during a rushed doctor's visit. As a result, a lot of people are over-treated and a lot are under-treated.
The new guidelines speak to the importance of 24-hour, ambulatory blood pressure measurement. But, in Canada, that test is not even covered in most provinces. You have to pay out-of-pocket.
The alternative is self-measurement. Home blood pressure monitoring devices are increasingly affordable, but you have to get a decent one."
The most recent research of salt intake I've seen suggests that reducing salt content only helps those who are already hypertensive.
Personally, I use more salt than the current guidelines suggest, but I've seen studies that suggest low levels of salt are more dangerous than high levels of salt.

You are way too kind GUS:)
BTW,
The 3 UCLA thug Basketballers are back in the states.
I clicked on 3 News accounts via Goolag to see if they had anything to say. The thugs did not, but each story mentioned the comments of Larry Scott, Commissioner of the Pac-12 Conference.
It was obvious all 3 news outlets had access to Larry Scotts comments. Two of the Network accounts included this:
Scott:"We are grateful for the role that our Chinese hosts played, and for the courtesy and professionalism of the local authorities," Scott said. "We also want to acknowledge UCLA's significant efforts on behalf of their student-athletes.
"Finally, we want to thank the President, the White House and the US State Department for their efforts towards resolution."
But the NBC affiliate story which came out 2 hours later than the earlier 2 stories, managed to leave out any praise of President Trump whatever, and only included this:
Scott: "We are all very pleased that these young men have been allowed to return home to their families and university," he said. "We are grateful for the role that our Chinese hosts played, and for the courtesy and professionalism of the local authorities."
I guess NBC thought that bit from Scott thanking President Trump just wasn't newsworthy.

I'm highly skeptical of statistical studies. Who was it, Will Rogers? Who declaimed that they're are three kinds of lies - lies, damn lies and statistics.
Took two semesters in Statistics taught by a woman who had an advanced degree in Statistics. Had a full-time job with one of the pharmaceutical companies here in NJ and taught as an adjunct.
She was really sharp, funny, and told us all of the tricks. Not just the basics. How hard it is to take bias out of statistics. How hard it is to create a study that will result in valid results. How often she found statistical errors in drug studies that would have otherwise led to the demise of that line of research. Etc.
She pointed out that most scientists only have a passing familiarity with statistics and couldn't pass their work past someone with her knowledge. She was an honest to God pisser, listening to her.
My prior experience in statistics was walking to church with my father (he went to college a couple of nights a week on the GI bill, as I was a lad, and must have been taking a statistics course at the time).
He had me count the colors of the next 10 cars to pass us. 50% were red. He had me count the make of the next 10 cars. 50% were Fords.
So he says to me, "50% of cars are red Fords," so I says "yeah, hey wait a minute."
Posted by: jim nj | November 15, 2017 at 02:36 AM
On a rant here,
By the time government or independent researchers release statistical results to the press you can be sure that the press will explain it to the public incorrectly. The press will ignore anything that doesn't fit into their mindset.
Thus the phrase that science advances one funeral at a time.
Thus the apocryphal story of the doctor who explains that 50% of what he was taught in Med school is wrong, but it took him 20 years to figure out which half.

daddy,
Gunsmoke was a staple at my house growing up. My dad loved that show and used to use phrases from the cast. Whenever we were talking a lot at the table, he'd say "Kind of talky, ain't ya, Chester?" which was something Doc would say from time to time.
We used to play dance hall with my grandad's shot glasses. (My mom who grew up in a Methodist teacher's home did NOT approve.)

Continuing,
Causation vs. Correlation
I've seen a chart that shows obesity began to rise after the government came out with it's nutritional guidelines.
I've seen a chart that shows as cigarette smoking rates declined, obesity rates climbed.
I've seen a chart that newspaper sales started to decline after their non-stop reporting and editorials caused Congress to ban cigarette advertising in the papers, and caused people to give up smoking. Don't need to pick up a pack at the corner store. No need the trip solely to buy the paper. Oddly enough, it appears that cigarette smokers were major buyers of newspapers.

MM,
I hope this bodes well for the Zimbabwean people. Mugabe is a thug. Like Idi Amin.
Which reminds me of a story. In my hometown of Englewood, NJ, we had two black families move into our neighborhood of ten houses on a dead-end street. One was Tony D'Costa from Uganda. One homeowner was incensed by his arrival, the others told him to knock it off. Something happened to Tony's parents in Uganda. Nobody in the neighborhood quite understood what it was because he was somewhat reticent to discuss it, but they were dead.
Tony was a gear-head, so all the white kids liked him. By gear-head, I mean that he was trained in a Fiat factory in Italy as a master mechanic and then sent to the USA. He worked on cars in his driveway on the weekends (which, ostensibly, was why the white guy across the street didn't like him), but the young white guys loved him (we were fledgling gear-heads).
He brought all of his siblings to The USA. 6-7 of them, and they were model Americans. Excellent in school, well behaved with a strong desire to succeed. One of them wanted to be an astronaut.
I'm not quite sure where I'm going with this other to imply that Africans are valuable, and even more so, when they can live in a free society, devoid of a dictator leader.
Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, was once one of the richest countries in Africa.
And, oh, if you're wondering, the other black family was headed by a NYC Transit Authority Police Sergeant, who made Lieutenant, shortly after moving to NJ. Another lovely family, and the daughter was an absolute knockout. Not that I lusted after her or anything.
(had to get up to get a tissue to staunch the drooling)

So Mugabe is out. Mugabe is 93. His wife is 50 and Imelda Marcos on steroids it seems. The coup was to get rid of her, and put a traditional military thug back in charge (the VP that Mugabe fired last week). No need for celebration. Zimbabwe will continue to suck, it's people will continue to starve even though it previous incarnation as "Rhodesia" was known as the breadbasket of Africa. Another win for socialism.

We were friends with Tim Price, Nick's brother, and his wife Felicity. When he was on the Euro PGA tour, he would stay with us in London when playing around there. He and Nick both served in the Rhodesian Air Force. The stories he would tell about the decline of Zimbabwe under Mugabe were horrific.

jim in nj---Quote - "Practically, that means reducing salt intake, being more physically active, moderating alcohol consumption, not smoking, watch the scales, getting more sleep, eating more fruits and vegetables and all that other healthy stuff that most people don't do."
You are correct about most people and salt NOT being a factor IRT BP, and I'll say nobody needs any fruit, if you are watching your sugar, as far as saying "fruits and vegetables." You get everything you "need" from vegetables. Berries do have massive amounts of antioxidants though.
I'm 1/3 of the way through Wheat Belly guy's new book, Undoctored. I haven't read a word I word I disagree with, other than his characterization that 50% of docs won't listen to you. Though obviously my experience is atypical. He lays out the case against grains in the next chapter.

These next two tweets are funny because of their juxtaposition, so I am posting them together:

While in the Philippines I was forced to watch @CNN, which I have not done in months, and again realized how bad, and FAKE, it is. Loser!

I won't post the next two tweets, which are just him tweeting thank yous to average citizens who complimented him. I will say, however, that getting a retweet by President Trump would make MY day, so I imagine they are ecstatic.

Way to go John H!
Time for my healthbragging. Sep 18 I started Dr David Ludwig’s nutritional approach. Basically no refined sugars, no processed carbs.
Had a 6 mo med review with my doc last week. Down 31 pounds. A1C went from 7.0 to 6.2. BP 100/77. Resting pulse 76.
Cut my metformin dose in half. lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide @25/10 went to lisinopril only @5mg.
I'm telling ya, (processed) carbs kill.

anonamom,
I am interested in switching my diet, but need an on-line reference. Also, we have a tight food budget.
Could you tell me a site or tell me which diet plans would be good to search on-line?
Thanks!

HA! I find this hilarious. They have offered to help, but Germany won't do anything.
Boy, are things changing in the Middle East or what?

MM:
Online references are dietdoctor.com and Whole30, just to give you the idea of what eliminating grains is like.
Wheat Belly cardiiologist has years worth of blog posts too.
So does Michael Eades, MD. He wrote Protein Power ages ago.
Atkins is hte same concept, and a fellow named Bernstein is hallowed in the diabetes world--book likely in the library.
Lustwig has a new book out too.
Dr. Terry Wahl has a great TED talk video that is the same way of eating, and she's got a book you check out of the library. Her resolution of her MS is awe inspiring.
It's not complicated---stop eating anything made from grains. No added sugar. At least most of the time.
Easier typed than done of course. ;-)

anonamom,
Thanks! My daughter has given up most sugar (except orange juice for which she and I both will have to find a substitute like sugar-free lemonade or something).
I thought if we were on one program it would help both of us. She takes a mix of drugs due to depression issues which left her susceptible to weight gain. I need to curb inflammatory issues like joint pain and such.
I figured I would try this for both of us.
I really appreciate you taking the time to list some sources. Thanks again!
