I seem to be starting every weekend with a two-minute drill about the ongoing debacles in the NFL. ESPN has a long article about the dispute between powerful owner Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys and commissioner Roger Goodell. I would say it is mostly "Who cares?" stuff, other than to note that the NFL geniuses have sportswriters talking about Game of Thrones power struggles rather than the games on the field. However, this facet of Goodell's controversial contract extension negotiations caught my eye:
ESPN has reported that [Goodell] asked in August for a compensation package of about $49 million a year, if every incentive is met, plus use of a private jet for life and health care for life for his family.
Say what? I get that after one becomes accustomed to the private jet lifestyle it is hard to go back. But for a guy making that much money to want family health care covered while leading a league that has been offensively stingy about providing that for its own players takes NFL tone-deafness to a new depth.
ERRATA: At a glance, eligible players receive medical coverage for the five years after they leave the league. Not exactly a lifetime.

From ExDem's 12:05 link about Apple's Black female Diversity Chief being fired for outrageous comments like this one:
“There can be 12 white, blue-eyed, blond men in a room and they’re going to be diverse too because they’re going to bring a different life experience and life perspective to the conversation,” the inaugural diversity chief said.
“Diversity is the human experience,” she said, according to Quartz. “I get a little bit frustrated when diversity or the term diversity is tagged to the people of color, or the women, or the LGBT.
That's the most heretical statement I've heard since Galileo said the Earth revolves around the Sun.

Web sleuths find stash of US military surveillance folders containing BILLIONS of Facebook posts about Trump, ISIS and foreign politicians
The files were being stored on three Amazon Web Services S3 buckets
They contained posts and comments gathered from Asia and the Middle East
Some were written in Canada and the US but had still been saved by officials
They contained references to Donald Trump, ISIS and foreign politicians
The files were gathered by CentCom, the US Central Command in Florida
Others were gathered by Pacom, the US Pacific Command in Hawaii
They were found by cyber security firm UpGuard which downloaded them in full
An internal security breach known as misconfiguration meant they were visible
CentCom said none of the information was sensitive but would not say why it was being gathered
They have added 'additional security measures' to stop anyone else from discovering similar files, they said

Marlene, the law here says that you must leave part of the animal exposed when transporting UNTIL you have it checked in at a weigh station. After that, an ethical hunter would cover it with a tarp keeping those Christmas letters to Santa in mind.

JimmyK,
For us it is automatically entered into the machine ready to install, and has that Red (update) ball telling us to install it, but it will not auto install for us. Instead, every time you power the damn thing up it appears in the middle of the screen like a pop-up ad asking us to install it with a prompt, and you have to select saying install or cancel to continue to whatever screen you need to view.. It is a drag having that keep popping up every time we power up the screen, but oh well.
Posted by: daddy | November 18, 2017 at 06:07 PM
I had already done the background refresh before I did the upgrade and now the battery life is worse. Haven't heard about iCloud issue. Hope they do another upgrade to fix it.

Rocco,I've lost count of the deer and moose I've seen on the back of pick-ups in Maine. :)
Do you hunt in northern NH or Maine?
Posted by: Marlene | November 18, 2017 at 06:09 PM
Pink hats and vests?? That is so PC, henry 😂
I haven't hunted white-tailed deer, wild pigs, black butt antelope, wild turkey, quail, on our place for years..
We're traditional wildlife/land manager/conservationists hunters. Cull the herds, they flourish and survive. Husband uses a tag, almost every year and we consume and share. Tex-Mex tamales are the best with venison/pork mix!! You have not eaten chicken fried steak, right, without it being back-strap! And the sausage is better than any unknown origin store-bought!
Everyone who hunts with him...follows the rules. The best part is the campfire at night, under the clear, crisp Texas sky..sharing stories of the "big rack" (no, not that one..antlers😂) that got away!
Posted by: glenda | November 18, 2017 at 06:11 PM
henry, that is convenient, nice! I was taught that the first thing to do when you shoot a deer is to fill out the deer tag and pin it somewhere on the animal. So I pinned it to the ear with a big safety pin, rolled the ear up with the tag inside it for safe keeping, and then tied the ear tight to the head. But while dragging the deer out of the woods, the tag was lost somewhere along the way. Now I wait until I get to my vehicle to attach the tag to the deer.
I have in the past transported them in the trunk with the hood of the trunk closed as much as possible.

TLG, it resets your defaults to background update to ICloud. So it is full time max bandwidth on sending everything to Apple HQ for their amusement. Go into settings and turn it off, unless you want your stuff backed up on Apple owned data centers, or really need stuff shared across your Apple devices. (It hits phones, pads and Macs equally). I backup to alternate devices myself... I do not agree with Apple getting my pics (plus IZp rights) and selling them on as stock photos, etc for other data to allow Apple to charge more for ads I don't want to see. /rant

I exited the Apple ecosystem a few weeks ago and couldn't be happier with my new a Samsung Note 8. Much more customizable than an iPhone. Apps aren't restricted to the Google site, and can be found elsewhere. 64G internal storage and can take a 256G micro SD card, and store any files there easily. Very cool interface, and even that can be modified by installing so-called "launcher" apps.
The only thing it can't do that I've found highly irritating is count stairs. Except for that, it's great.

Which is your favorite or preferred cough drops?
Original Ricolas. I used to get the most horrendous barking coughs and they'd be the only thing that would cut it. Finally my doctor put me on fluticasone spray and Xertek: end of problem. Except I still get a cold every year or two including now. The night before last I was up most of the night with a persistent cough. Then last night I remembered I had some old Ricolas; took one and slept like a baby.
Posted by: Captain Hate | November 18, 2017 at 06:24 PM
I guess "couldn't be happier" and "highly irritated" aren't quite logical. Apple counted stairs and steps separately since at least iPhone 6. Samsung, years later, still can't count stairs. I'm guessing they must have a lower-grade accellerometer.

TLG, I have a similar device set, I back up to my Mac. Pics I also back up to my work PC (and rotating thumb drives). My iPad 2 drains quickly as it is, and loads pages slowly on the browser. I have considered getting a new iPad, but figure the slowest sites are ad heavy so it saves me from looking at them. at work, my PC is on a standard backup schedule with our inhouse servers. Cloud services get backup by our platform vendors ( we test often).
The net is data transfer over wifi eats battery. Minimize it. Newer devices use less power, but we load more work on them. Backup elsewhere is good provided you can trust the custodian.

The first college game ever played was November 6, 1869 between Rutgers and New Jersey (aka Princeton). Score was 6-4 Rutgers. My family supplied the first ball ever used for Collegiate football, The Lillywhite Model J, a revamped Rugby ball. Came all the way over the pond from London.
Back then, they actually played 10 games in one. Each time a team scored they were awarded one point thus the score.

Porchlight,
When I say that reflects the Christmas of my childhood, I am serious. My dad was a furnace repairman and was always banging on ours.
The people on the other side of the lane from us (approximately 3.5 miles from the center of Indianapolis) had not only dogs like the Bumpases but goats and donkeys, which periodically would get loose.
To go see Santa you went downtown to the L.S. Ayres department store and rode a train through Santaland which was decotated with ice covered trees, fake snow, and giant candy canes. (You didn't go down a slide, though.)
Every year we would put up the real cut tree and every yeat the lights would pop and short, once blowing a fuse. My dad would always cuss about it.
In those days, when you went downtown there were actual Salvation Army bands on the street. Shop windows in the downtown stores were decorated with Christmas themed story presentations, not merchandise.
All the schools had Christmas programs. With religious music, no less. My school always presented the program the last day of school before vacation, and by tradition the program ended with "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." To this very day when I hear that carol I feel like I am leaving on vacation.
We also opened our gifts Christmas morning, not Christmas Eve. As the oldest of 5 and all girls until my baby brother was born at the last, I got both an electric train one year and a mechanical robot that shot missiles the next. I never owned a doll as I had a constant supply of new babies to take care of to help my mother.

I'm aware of the Chinese buying Opera, but I'm not sure what that really means. The basic software is so stable, I doubt it get much tweaking. On the other hand, I can see them sending the code back home to make Chine market versions and/or getting the Norskies to do better quality coding for other apps.
