David Brooks is fascinating today:
The Siege Mentality Problem
Why are so many conservative evangelicals in Alabama still supporting Roy Moore? For that matter, why have so many evangelicals around the country spent the past two years embracing Donald Trump?
I just took part in a compelling conversation on this subject at the Faith Angle Forum, founded by the late Michael Cromartie of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, and came away with one core explanation: the siege mentality. In fact, I’d say the siege mentality explains most of the dysfunctional group behavior these days, on left and right.
You see the siege mentality not just among evangelical Christians but also among the campus social justice warriors and the gun lobbyists, in North Korea and Iran, and in the populist movements across Europe.
The siege mentality starts with a sense of collective victimhood. It’s not just that our group has opponents. The whole “culture” or the whole world is irredeemably hostile.
This connection was interesting and will ring true with sports fans:
Leaders, even sports coaches, try to whip up the siege mentality, because it makes their job easier. After all, this mentality encourages people to conform and follow orders. Resentment can be a great motivator. It’s us against the world!
I suspect Mr. Brooks has personal experience with feeling besieged. But why is this social trend so problematic now, especially if, as with sports, the concept is timeless?
Why is this mind-set so prevalent now? Well, it’s partially because the country is divided and many groups feel under assault. According to a Pew Research Center poll, 64 percent of Americans believe that their group has been losing most of the time.
But that’s not the main reason the siege mentality is so prevalent. It’s because we’re in a historic transitional moment and the very foundations of society are now open to question.
The older among us have to be wondering how he compares this to the polarization and drama of the 60's.
In the 1960s the civil rights leaders suffered injustice and oppression. But they had a basic faith in the foundations of society. They wanted a place at the table.
Today people are more likely to think the table itself stinks, or there is no common table. Today Christians are more likely to argue that the liberal order itself is intolerant toward faith. Social justice warriors are prone to argue that America is racist and oppressive in its very bones. The evil is inherent in the basic structure.
I don't remember the anti-war crowd as thinking the system was fundamentally fair. I'll try two other guesses - with the current media and technology it is easier for the aggrieved to find each other, either to huddle in defense or go on the march against evil. Even those who customize their Facebook and Twitter feeds to tune out the Other Side know the opposition is out there.
On the other other hand, our Founding fathers managed to organize a revolution without even Tweeting and our friends in the South engineered a secession a century later without Facebook, Matt Drudge or Jon Stewart.
The second driver is the endless need for politicians to raise money, which doesn't seem to be accomplished by sending out pamphlets noting that, while our opponents have some good points, our arguments are stronger. Just for example, the apocalyptic "Donate now or we will all DIE!" approach has been a staple of the pro-choice crowd since the 70's, not to mention the gun-grabbers or the gun nuts gun rights enthusiasts or the environmentalists.
Mr. Brooks has a bit of an LOL conclusion, although to be fair it seems like he stopped rather than finished, presumably due to space considerations:
The fact is, the siege mentality arises from overgeneralization: They are all out to get us. It shouldn’t be met with a counter-overgeneralization: Those people are all sick.
It should be met with confident pluralism. We have a shared moral culture, and some things are beyond the boundaries, like tolerating sexual harassment. But within the boundaries of our liberal polity, we’re going to give one another the benefit of the doubt.
Suppose America’s leaders had gone to conservative evangelicals a decade ago and said: Look, we understand that changing attitudes about gay marriage put you in a tough position. We’re not going to stop doing what we think is right, but we’re going to try to work out some accommodation with you on religious liberty so you can feel at home here and practice your faith.
That might have felt more like a conversation than a siege. That might have spared us the populist revolts that brought us Roy Moore, and Donald Trump, and the repugnant habits of mind that now excuse them.
Oh, please - nobody can fund-raise off of adult conversation. More to the point, the left won their court victories on gay marriage by successfully arguing that the bans were based on irrational homophobic bigotry. Pivoting to reconciliation with those 'bigots' would have taken extraordinary dance skills unlikely to be appreciated by the audience on the left.
A better example would have been the argument about legal and illegal immigration. Obviously the left characterizes any concept of immigration control as hate-based racism but the illogic of that view is revealed by the fact that even stalwart liberals sometimes admit that the US cannot have both open borders and a generous social safety net.
David Brooks is never fascinating, even if he would complement Trump.

I do admire TM’s ability to dispassionately read and examine David Brooks.
I had difficulty reading Brooks once removed via TM’s references.
Brooks has written a book he says is about character. He has even taught a course ostensibly about character. I have seen no evidence Brooks has any character.
Noise. Brooks is all noise, and I’ll take no part in it.
If there is a kernel of useful information in Brooks, someone else will have to distill it completely into different words not attributed to Brooks.
Repeating, I do admire TM’s fortitude to wade into the Times to let us know why we should not. It is reminiscent of both Confucius and Seneca, who familiarized themselves with other views the better to understand their own.

Lets see. Just off the top of my head:
GOP Congressmen shot on a ball field by a leftist.
Senator assaulted in his own yard by a leftist.
Trump supporters assaulted at rallies.
25 Texas church members murdered in their own church, by a leftist.
Efforts to make transgender normal in elementary schools.
Attacks on the National Anthem, including refusal to stand when it is played.
====================
Those are actual incidents, not products of my imagination nor of siege mentality, which, if I have that mind-set, is because we are ACTUALLY UNDER SIEGE.

Today I am announcing my intention to amend the Senate tax bill to repeal the individual mandate and provide bigger tax cuts for middle income taxpayers.
The mandate repeal is a promise we all made and we should keep. It also allows an additional $300 billion+ in tax cuts.
Senator Rand PaulVerified account @RandPaul

My amendment will fix a problem in the Senate bill where many taxpayers would see a tax increase because of the loss of state and local deductions.
I will introduce a similar deduction as the House plan, making the tax reform plan more fair for everyone.

Indictments keep piling up in various federal courts, but they are sealed. 37 in DC alone, all sealed.

henry,
Really? It seemed pretty straighforward to me. Getting rid of the Individual Mandate and penalty would give a break to people and off-set the loss of state and local tax deductions.
Maybe bot perfect, but a start.
I still think it would be better to simply let everyone take a certain per cent off the taxes owed. It would be a lot easier to understand and we wouldn't have all of this arguing.

When we were in our early-thirties we were friends with a couple, also in their early-thirties, who got divorced. After the divorce the male half of the couple fell in love with a 17-year-old who was a senior in high school at the time. After she graduated they got married, had four kids, and stayed married until his death a couple of years ago.
My point is that we never thought his being attracted to (she was very pretty) and falling in love with a teenager who was also half his age was pervy. We kidded him about "robbing the cradle" and we were somewhat dubious that the relationship would last, but we never once thought he had a morality problem.
This was in the 1970s--apparently a more enlightened era.
Posted by: derwill | November 14, 2017 at 11:49 AM
Henry "bigger tax cut overall".
As you know Henry, everytime we create a computer model designed to predict something in the future, wise programmers load it up with actual known historical data then run it to see how well it predicts where we know we are today.
I suggested before that whatever this Bill ends up being, the actual tax returns from 2016 should be applied to the proposed Bill so we can see if it would have produced the same, or more, or less tax revenues. Then we call see what lable it deserves.

But if you read to the end he supports Trump, believes he is doing what's best for America and that there is no "Trumpism agenda".

According to Judge Nap, since any of Moore's sexual dealings happened before he became a senator they can't expel him. If he wins on the 12th and is seated (he has to be) then his vote will be a huge bargaining chip, especially for any of those senators who maligned him and now need a favor vote.
But Menendez can be expelled since his adventures happened while a Senator.
Wouldn't that be schadenfreude to have Moore take his seat while the Senate expels Menendez.
Won't happen that way but a guy can dream, can't he:)

Hey. Just 'cause you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.
It might be helpful to think of the left, not as an ideology, but as an industry -- an illegal one. It's really about the money, and they will be after it relentlessly. In that light you can see why they're out to get you, and that they will never stop until their corruption gets them jail terms.

Brooks is spot on. I've seen first hand the effects of Siege mentality among Ulster protestants and Israelis. It produces a collective irrationality among the effected minority. All critical thinking goes out the window.
The other day two posters on this site said that even if Roy Moore sexually molested a child they would still vote for him. When self-preservation trumps morality it's only a matter of time before the belief, the stance, the ideology rots from the inside giving way to a complete collapse.
We saw it in Northern Ireland. We saw it in Russia. We're seeing it in Israel and now in we're seeing it in right-wing American politics.

AL.com reported yesterday that many of Moore's acquaintances knew of his exploits and that Roy had a "penchant for flirting with teen girls". In fact it seemed the whole town knew.
The article states:"He would go and flirt with all the young girls," one witness said. "It'd seem like every Friday or Saturday night (you'd see him) walking around the mall, like the kids did."
Jesus.
Also from the article:"Another man who grew up in the area '"recalled being told by a mall employee that they kept watch for an older guy who was known to pick up younger girls."'
Even the New Yorker has been digging up some interesting nuggets. A quoted source in their report says, according to local rumors, that Moore "had been banned from the mall because he repeatedly badgered teen-age girls."
Dang! So Rapey Roy hung around malls looking to fuck little children.

I have to disagree with the rationale of the study and results. Is pajama boy the poster boy of the metro-sexual social justice warrior? And the study author is going to tell me that he would be less disgusted by the various scenarios? I don't think so.
This is more of an attempt by the Left to show they are stronger mentally and emotionally than conservatives. When you consider that right thinking people are more likely to hunters, fisherman and outdoors type they run across much more disgusting things than some urban snowflake.
Total upside down test and results.

"FYI: AL.com is the online presence of three Alabama newspapers from around the state, including The Huntsvegas Times. Unflinchingly left wing, and losing money every day"
Oh.
Jeese.
You really showed me.
So...we.....should hold onto Moore and go ahead with the election?
Oh.
Jeese.
You really showed me.

"All he's missing is a trench coat and candy."
Ah, a real predator, a lying progressive Arkansas governor used his police to round up desirable females for company.
"Pedophile" is being tossed about rather freely by the useful idiots. A definition is in order:

You easily missed the point, DuDa. The 'FYI' was tangential to their sloppy reporting, which relied on rumors and hearsay.

I'm in favor of cutting the troll's time to 30 seconds.

Perhaps they don't realize they're just making the targets on their backs bigger and easier to see, Frau.
I don't think they do. They all live by the idea of "I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you."
It never occurs to them that sooner or later (and probably sooner) they'll run out of other people to outrun, but the bear will still be there right behind them.

I agree, Henry, it's a stupid test. It said I'm 67% liberal. So I followed the "How does this work?" link, and guess what:
The party of science strikes again!

Tell 'em, Beasts.
BTW I've enjoyed looking at FOTUS's shoes. Did you see the red soles on the flats she wore while walking the Great Wall?

FLOTUS... using all caps is hard. How does GUS do it? He makes it look easy.

Watching the more deliberate sausage making enterprise where the Democrats are aghast that an American corporation would attempt to make money selling their IP to overseas customers and take a tax savings.
In a nutshell: Taking advantage of tax policy for the benefit of a corporation is bad. However, selling 20% of our uranium resources to a foreign entity is good.
