I attended my first Oakland Raiders game in 1960. I was five years old at the time. Our tickets had us on bleacher seats right behind the Raiders bench. We were so close we could hear the players farting.

MM, thank you for posting so frankly about your son yesterday. I assumed that would be the case, when you mentioned that he'd already had a few glasses of wine before he hit the road. It's (sadly) extremely common, and a factor in most motor vehicle collisions.

I urge you and your daughter to go the Al Anon meetings in your area, for a while at least. There is almost always a pattern of enabling that can be very hard to differentiate from support involved in these situations, and others who have walked the road you're going to be on are generally the best guides.

I found this discussion of Wheat Belly interesting.
I have to confess I find his claim that wheat was once a healthful food but has been turned into a toxin by genetic engineering highly suspect.
I also read other sources who noted his citations often don't support his claims or sometimes say the opposite.

I am convinced significant consumption of sugar and carbohydrates, especially white flour and other processed carbs is harmful, not least because of my own experience in cutting them out of my diet.
But I'm very skeptical of food evangelists and ascetics telling me the end is nigh if I let some impurity crosseth my lips, especially when the evangelists often make claims that conflict as much or more as the Protestant and Catholic evangelists did in the Thirty Years War.
I have no doubt there are many people suffering from dietary and metabolic conditions that can be greatly helped by strict dietary changes. KK is walking, talking proof of that.
But I'm equally convinced many people who are otherwise relatively healthy will receive only marginal benefits through strict dietary regimens or perhaps none at all. Like most things I suspect 90% of the benefits are produced by the first 10% of the effort and the last 10% through 90% of the work. I'm not sure that last 10% is worth it when we consider how easily our efforts are overwhelmed by genetic and external environmental and accidental factors.
Admittedly my view is probably warped by Mrs Iggy who was a bit of a food evangelist herself and ate better and more healthfully than anyone I knew.

I've been thinking about this, as I dislike offering advice, without a full understanding of what's going on.

The restaurant owner knowing about your son's situation suggests that your son is what is often called a "functional" alcoholic. He's a drunkard who can maintain a job, relationships, etc. Knows he is an alcoholic, but can exhibit enough self-control so as to support himself. And not have to live on the street begging for money.

Your not knowing about his condition suggests the same diagnosis. He could maintain a relationship with you as a "functional" as he would have hidden his condition from you and your daughter.

Something like an auto accident can result in a self realization that is traumatic enough for him to seek help.

He's already realized that he's let you down. Your daughter too.

Some of us think of alcoholism as a weakness or a disease, but you should also help him to find out if he is self-medicating with alcohol to treat himself.

In other words, is he an alcoholic, or is he treating, by himself, some other psychological condition he is not even aware of that might come out with psychiatric care and/or medication.

He needs help, but don't feel like you have failed him, or are inadequate in some way. I'm sure he will respect your opinion and want your help.

By way of explanation as to how you can help. My sister was a heroin addict for almost twenty years. At one point I couldn't deal with her anymore and cut her off from all contact with me for some time. Some years later she sought treatment. She was diagnosed with manic-depressive disorder and her drug regimen including anti-opiod blockers. We now converse on a regular basis via phone and she visits me twice a year for a week or two.

Agree w jim in nj above---I don't think what is often called alcoholism is an all-or-none "disease," but self treating other issues. Most typically, what is called depression.

And often, those could be called spiritual issues.
Which is why I think that 12 step program works better than anything else to date for all kinds of substance abuse.

I don't deny that some people may have some kind of demonstrable genetic propensity to become substance addicted, but it doesn't doom a person. I know way, way too many people who drank abusively and now drink socially to think the "one drink and I'm back in the gutter" kind of thing is the way it goes, though I fully support total abstinence for people who chose it. (And for some, it is essential.)

It's easier to be fully present in this life when your faculties are not impaired.

But I do think "recovery" is multifactoral, and good nutrition, movement outdoors, community--all things sadly missing in our modern lifestyle for so many---have a big role to play in re-establishing one's center/spiritual core.

I read a fabulous book recently The Body Keeps the Score that I recommend to anyone dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma.

And frankly, most people are.

Are there any of these sanctimonious gasbags left being held up by the popular Culture as the Angels we want to organize Utopia for us?

I can think of maybe 3.

1) Meryl Streep, who said she never saw anything and never heard anything, but then that means either she's lying or she's too stupid and unobservant to ever be in charge of organizing anything,

2) Oprah Winfrey. But Oprah as I recall kept hiring teachers in her schools in Africa that would come in and rape the students, so she's got no business organizing Utopia for us either.

3) "nimby" George Clooney, but he's damaged goods since he keeps badgering the world to take in refugees, except that when they come to his Italian town he up and leaves since he hates dealing with any of those icky humans on a personal level.

So who's left? Who's the last great Angel still standing with the popular bonafides to talk down to all us Deplorables?

Light meat or dark meat?

In my family the females for some insane reason prefer light meat, whereas the men naturally prefer dark meat. Are any of you guys aberrational in that regard?

In the rank of angels, those you listed are only in the 1st sphere, probably most are Seraphim or Cherubim. The real dangers are the angels in the 3rd sphere. Those are the Principalities or Rulers.

Agree with iggy's overnight comments on food evangelists. The extremes they go to or almost impossible to achieve, but it's very hard to get them to agree that it's ok to replace all the "completely eliminate"s with "substantially reduce." That the benefits are at least proportional to the cutback. I'm sure they are, unless you have some condition like celiac. So that's what I do. Cut back on sugar, refined carbs, grains, but don't go crazy.
