Here is the NY Times on the tragic fire in the Bronx that killed twelve:
After Saving Many From Fire, Soldier Died Trying to Rescue One More
Emmanuel Mensah was a handsome, strongly built young man in his late 20s who immigrated to the Bronx from Ghana five years ago. He joined the Army but returned to his apartment on Prospect Avenue in December after undergoing training.
And on Thursday night, he lost his life trying to save people from his furiously burning apartment building, one of 12 people to die in the blaze.
“He brought four people out,” said his uncle, Twum Bredu, who lives next door. “When he went to bring a fifth person out, the fire caught up with him.”
Mr. Mensah was found in Apartment 15, his uncle said, but he lived in Apartment 11, with a friend of his father’s who was at home with his wife and four children. Mr. Mensah got that family to safety, then pulled out four more people, his uncle said, before returning to the building. He never emerged; authorities said he died of smoke inhalation.
Assuming this is roughly true I hope the Army and the good people of the greatest city in the world do something to honor this guy.
Early Bird and all that....

Important that we support the nonviolent protesters in #Iran. This is the result of a regime more focused on propping up terrorist organizations than addressing the plight of its citizens.

Good Morning.
Over here in a Breakfast Buffet room surrounded by brand new adopted Chinese baby girls and their new American parents. Always uplifting.
I switched both TVs here off CNN to a local Chinese News Channel. It has been running a recap of the top stories of 2017 and they keep putting up the video of Trump's cute granddaughter serenading the Chinese President and his wife with some old Chinese Folk Song.
I can't over-stress how huge that played over here. Every time it comes up the News gal breaks out in a delightful smile and recaps the incident. Trump and Ivanka were brilliant to organize that compliment to thaw relations. It definitely was one of the top News moments to a Billion Chinese.

From what I have read that apartment in the Bronx was a firetrap tenement from the turn of the previous century. This is 2017, where local regulation is ubiquitous, except where it isn't. Like the Oakland fire, the apparent willingness of the local authorities to turn the other way for somewhat sketchy situations involving certain communities appears to be at the heart of things. RIP Emmanuel Mensah.

Hi Miss M.
2 more days on deck here in Guangzhou (sunny and 80 degrees) and then we do an evening leg to Seoul and sit there for 36 hours. Then straight home on I think the 3rd or 4th---I've lost track of time.
Just catching up and plus I'm sober now:) but I don't recall Pop ever making a big deal of Lena Horne. I do recall that as a kid I would go through his War chest and in it were a number of small white cartoon sort of things dropped behind Allied lines by the Germans from planes or fired by shell, and they would say stuff like 'Surrender American soldier and go home because we are going to win the war and your girlfriend back home is cheating on you." Those were fascinating, as was all the other stuff in his war chest, like I suspect your pop's was also.

I just hope that if we are involved in helping coup plotters, we are prepared to do the necessary, so that we don't have Bay of Pigs redux.

I'd take that "slumlord" piece with some large grains of salt. Seems like the fire likely had nothing to do with any code violations, but was started by a 3-year-old "playing with a gas stove." Even fancy Park Ave buildings get cited for violations, and it sounds like many of the complaints were about things like elevator problems. Maybe the landlord is an evil villain, but maybe tragedies happen without an evil mastermind. But regardless, Emmanuel Mensah was a hero. RIP.
