1. i'm assuming the crime they are attempting to prove is receiving stolen property (the leaked DNC emails, as stolen by the Russians), and
2. conspiring with the Russians to steal those emails in the first place.

3 AM here so Happy New Year everyone. The Chines channels all featured video of huge fireworks displays and singers and such, so it appears they have adopted Western style New Years as a new holiday. The streets at 3 AM are packed with traffic and many many bicyclers out for spins in the clear night about 70F. We are in a taxi to the airport and our driver is lost. Big fun.

Hi Caro,
So glad to see you posting and that you have enjoyed your trip to New Zealand.
Hope to hear more from you once you return to Park City Utah.
I still have fond memories of my honeymoon there with hubby in 1981.

Regarding the shooting in Las Vegas, I will say that there are too many loony conspiracy theories out there. Especially the one about the helicopters which are easily explained by the locals.

The reason there are so. Any conspiracy theories is that the the authorities refuse to give out any information, and even if they did, they have completely squandered any credibility they might once have had.

If they don't want conspiracy theories to develop, they have to start telling the truth to the public, even - especially - when it's embarrassing to them, even when it might cost elected or appointed officials their jobs.

It's really simple.

James D.

Bori, I'll be donating to your GoFundMe but it probably, won't be until tomorrow or Tuesday morning.

"The Merry Wives of Dossier". I like that. Good job, clarice!

We must remember though, that Brent Crude closed at @ $66 ($62/NYME) the other day, the highest it has been all year. I expect that we'll see shale production up again this coming year. A pity the EPA can't mess with that like they used to. And what ever happened to Cuomo's report on fracking? I think New York State needs a FOIA request.

What will be telling is if those pictures of Neda start showing up again. That was a very raw wound for many Iranians.

You really can't trust most of the media on this anymore as well. Foreign Policy has become anti Trump all the time along with the rest of them, and if the NY Times thinks they can get away with third party hearsay as news, their credibility will have been truly shredded for good.

If nothing else, the DoJ knew about the Steele dossier contemporaneously with some boob who had a few too many. The story stinks of another set piece propaganda lie.

So we will see what comes in the new year. All the best to all of you for a peaceful, healthy, and happy new year. And more Winning Bigly!

Conspiring to violate the election laws of the United States, which prohibit foreign nationals from contributing any “thing of value” to an electoral campaign.<<<

I see this alot but I've not seen any cites to prove it. And a minute or two of thinking would start to poke holes in it.

It is illegal for a foreigner to vote and to contribute hard cash contributions to a candidate. "Anything of value" though? What about Reps and Dems looking for votes of eligible ex-pats in Europe, Asia, Israel? Foreign nationals that are legally employed for an ad campaign? Foreign entertainer headlining and hosting a fundraiser (this is an actual case)?

Seeing a Australia offered a 'thing of value' to red queens foundation, in return for promise to transfer certain refugees to the states hypothetically, well it takes two to tango.

Genius Cuomo thinks the tax reform (specifically the elimination of SALT deductions) is unconstitutional, because "equal protection."

https://www.amny.com/news/politics/tax-reform-cuomo-1.15649889

On top of that, he wants to make drastic cuts in state spending to make NY tax rates more in line with those of other states.

Just kidding! He wants to shift taxes from individuals to businesses, apparently not understanding that people pay taxes, not businesses, so the effect will be higher prices, plus even more businesses and jobs leaving the state.

Clarice, enjoyed your "Pieces," as always. The puzzling thing about that Eichenwald tweet about selling his stocks is that it's dated 9/26/16, which is when the MSM consensus was that Hillary had a 98% chance of winning. Eichenwald must have been in one of his epileptic fits and had a vision of the future.

Re. Navy Secretary's sidearm. I can understand the CNN commentator being surprised. I don't remember another instance of this happening.

Mind you. I can understand why he is wearing a sidearm. Having, and being able to use, a pistol is the difference between life and death in Afghanistan.

Re. The general who got shot by a friendly Afghan soldier - I wonder if he was carrying any weapons when he was shot. I remember some commentary that the Afghans would be insulted if the foreigners felt the need to carry weapons at the officers staff college.

Clarice

Must be the explanation,jimmy k.

Jim Eagle

Does the Director of the FBI carry?
Does the Commissioner of the NYPD carry?
Does the Commanding General of the 200th Military Police Corp carry?
Does the Director of the Secret Service carry?

They are ceratinly authorized and some may not but most do. They have dangerous jobs even if primarily administrative since they are big targets for the bad guys.

Much ado about nothing except personal security which more than some progs question.

Jim Eagle

Clarice & jimmyk,

Eichenwald's pulling out of the stock market in late September was reverse psychology blaming a Trump presidency when if he was any savvy investor it was the specter of Hillary winning that scared him.

Not Trump except as an excuse.

matt- deplore me if you must

There is a cut down version of the Colt .45 called the General Officer's Model, so yes, most generals do carry in combat zones. Petraeus was an exception although he probably did carry when commanding the 101st.

At virtually every jirga with the Afghans, everyone was armed. The PSD (Personal Security Details) stand in the back with their M-4's finger on the safety. Most officers were also armed from my understanding.

The daily reality of assassinations and suicide bombings sort of makes it a very good idea.

A lot middle and senior level officers and NCO's have lost their lives or been badly wounded. One of my closest friends was a brigade CSM in 2012 in Paktika Province, on the Pakistani border.

One day he flew in to visit some of his troops on patrol and some Haqqani hero decided to toss a grenade at his feet.
He was badly wounded. First time in 30 years in the Army, all of it in Airborne units, no less.

He's doing great now, but it was a long haul.

So yeah, when a SecNav or other senior feels the need for a last ditch line of defense I can get that, especially now that we know that a lot of our security details are undermanned and under funded.

The Taliban and their allies are more powerful than they were just a few years ago, but at least Trump has put the word out to their Pakistani handlers that we're not going to accept that shit anymore.

Bori

Clarice and jimmyk,

Eichenwald, also tried to deny that he meant to get out of the stock market but just out of the US stock market in December. He claimed victory in his decision, claiming that the global markets outperformed the US stocks.

Well ...

A lot of people on the internet will claim their "rock solid" inference as "fact".

Yes there is a difference between a fact and a perfectly valid inference. However the US legal system is generally fine with the conflation.

Extraneus

Contrary to what Sundance claimed (BREAKING: Senator Lindsey Graham Just Confirmed The Steele Dossier Was Used For 2016 FISA Warrant…), Graham did not confirm that the dossier was "used for" or was the basis for the FISA warrant.

In a Fox News interview Friday night, Graham strongly suggested there is something untoward in the dossier material. Noting that special counsel Robert Mueller is not investigating the dossier – "That's not part of his charter" – Graham said he, Graham, has finally gotten a look at the origins and use of the document:

"I've spent some time in the last couple of days, after a lot of fighting with the Department of Justice, to get the background on the dossier, and here's what I can tell your viewers: I'm very disturbed about what the Department of Justice did with this dossier, and we need a special counsel to look into that, because that's not in Mueller's charter. And what I saw, and what I've gathered in the last couple of days, bothers me a lot, and I'd like somebody outside DOJ to look into how this dossier was handled and what they did with it."

Host Brian Kilmeade asked Graham, "So, you've found out something you did not know?

"Yes," Graham answered.

Kilmeade asked whether Graham was disturbed by the contents of the dossier or how the Justice Department used it in the Trump-Russia investigation.

"I've been a lawyer most of my life, a prosecutor, and a defense attorney," Graham began. He continued:

"And the one thing I can say, every prosecutor has a duty to the court to disclose things that are relevant to the request. So any time a document is used to go to court, for legal reasons, I think the Department of Justice owes it to the court to be up-and-up about exactly what this document is about, who paid for it, who's involved, what their motives might be. And I can just say this: After having looked at the history of the dossier, and how it was used by the Department of Justice, I'm really very concerned, and this cannot be the new normal."

What, precisely, did Graham mean? A well-informed source would not explain beyond Graham's words, and a Justice Department source did not respond to a request for comment.

I don't think global stocks have outperformed the US--not Europe, anyway. Maybe Japan has done similarly, or some emerging markets. My guess is the liar Eichenwald would just cherry-pick the best-performing countries and claim those were the ones he invested in.

Bori

"any time a document is used to go to court, for legal reasons, I think the Department of Justice owes it to the court to be up-and-up about exactly what this document is about, who paid for it, who's involved, what their motives might be"

I will however not be the most sober. Enjoyed two Grey G.oose and Lemonata's now onto an Ophelia Willemete Valley Chardonnay. May go back to my Certan de May Pomerol after that. Hey, its New Years's Eve.
