Some people are not aware that the lyrics of "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" are taken from a poem by Longfellow. Here's the background on the poem and the full lyrics:
Good morning, JOM and Merry Christmas to all. When I say of my ‘gratefuls’ this morning I think of this wonderful blog and how the host TM has provided this venue of communication for such a thoughtful caring group of people.
Also thankful I’ve been able to meet Man Tran, Pagar and Missy Porch in person, spoken with Clarice and ChiTown on the phone and all are wonderful people.
And like CentralCal tho I mostly lurk these past years I’ve laughed at the good humor that eased the pain of the Obama administration. I along with MM and so many others feel God’s hand must have guided this past election.
Dear Janet’s 8:03 post this morning (on the previous thread) is an inspired passage brought to us by Ignatz last year and welcome to read.

That AT link is too funny, clarice.
It's probably too much to hope the CA Dems pass option number 2 and Trump's federales wait a year and then arrest the entire CA government and anyone who claimed the charitable deduction en masse for the obvious tax fraud it is.
Maybe Dem internment camps are still in the picture.
FTA:And speaking of hypocritical weasels, the Democrats wisely declined their progressive wing’s demand to use the DACA fight to restage the Alamo, probably because this time the Americans would have won. Instead, they kicked the budget can down the road to January and fled town, not particularly wanting to compound their stinging defeat on tax reform with one on illegal aliens. Yeah, a government shutdown over the holidays because the Democrats won’t play unless Republicans let a couple million illegal aliens become citizens is a bad visual. Around the Christmas table, even that annoying sophomore nephew who is home from Gumbo State for Kwanzaa will kind of have a problem arguing, “But we should totally cut off vital services for Americans in order to let MS-13 members be rewarded with our precious citizenship!”
Now, as your late family gathers together, all dead because of Trump’s authoritarian reign of terror, try to remember that in the spirit of the season, you should mock your liberal friends and family unmercifully. It’s a painful time for them. The economy is booming, ISIS has been beheaded, and Mueller hasn’t found Schiff. That’s why it’s so, so very important to kick them when they are down. Because Christmas is a time where we celebrate giving, so give them grief. Because it’s the only way they’ll ever learn.
MM,earlier this month,an amateur historian who writes history articles for the Maine papers noticed that the Longfellow Monument in Portland was missing his Christmas scarf. He contacted the people who usually put the scarf on the monument. They wanted to continue the tradition (20 years) but one of the group had recent hip surgery and the others didn't want to risk the snow and ice. The original organizers must be older folks. Anyway, the amateur historian recruited a reporter from the Portland paper and they put a Dollar Store scarf around HWL's monument. They used a step ladder to reach, not realizing HWL is much taller than he appears if you're walking by him on the street. Ha.
Fun story and HWL is wearing his scarf this year!
Nearly 65 percent of Americans want to be greeted with “Merry Christmas,” while a much smaller 28 percent prefer “Happy Holidays,” the poll finds. The results appear to give conservatives a big victory in their longstanding promise to end the so-called “War on Christmas.”
glasater,Thank you! We were so happy to meet you and we look forward to seeing you again but not this year I'm sure. Who knows what the next year will bring.
BLITZER: "Thank you, President Trump, for allowing us to say 'Merry Christmas.'" As far as I know, people have been saying merry Christmas for a long time.
DAVID SWERDICK: Yeah, Merry Christmas, Wolf. Merry Christmas, Rebecca. Merry Christmas, Jeffrey. You can already say "Merry Christmas."
REBECCA BERG: Don’t you feel liberated?
DAVID SWERDICK: Yeah, I do. Like thank you, President Trump. Look, it’s a bit of a ridiculous ad. At the same time, this for the 35 percent of Americans that still support President Trump, this is the value add. (The December 22 Rasmussen poll had Trump's approval rating at 44 percent. — Ed.) A President Bush could have passed a tax cut. A President Rubio could have appointed a Supreme Court justice Neil Gorsuch. But this culture war, this sort of ax grinding is what people got out of President Trump, and they’re sort of touting it now as they end the year.
BLITZER: Jeffrey, go ahead.
JEFFREY TOOBIN: I just wanted to say that finally, you know, the Obama prohibition on "Merry Christmas" has been overturned, and I for one am grateful for that.
BLITZER: Although we have a lot of clips of former President Obama actually saying those words, "Merry Christmas."
TOOBIN: It’s true. It’s true. Just a little Christmas cheer here, you know.
During the past month, many establishment press pundits have pivoted from believing that Republicans will suffer major losses in the 2018 midterm elections because they haven't accomplished anything to predicting that Republicans will suffer major losses now that they have.
...
Ronald Brownstein wrote the following at The Atlantic on Wednesday:
The Double-Edged Sword of a Party-Line Victory
President Trump and congressional Republicans have just taken the same leap of faith that Democrats did when they passed the Affordable Care Act.
When then-President Obama and the Democratic House and Senate majorities muscled through the ACA in 2010, the bill represented a big policy victory, but an even bigger political gamble. Though ObamaCare fulfilled the party’s decades-long goal of providing (nearly) universal health care, the immediate backlash in the 2010 election helped propel Republicans to the biggest midterm gain in the House for either party since 1938 and gave them a majority in the chamber they still haven’t relinquished.
Republicans could face a similar equation of costs and benefits from the tax bill they just passed.
Cold and grey skies in the Piedmont today, though it was sunny for a few hours earlier.
My sweet boys coordinated to FaceTime a parent each so we all could be "together" (though not), but poppa still out on his walkabout, and momma had to get ready for church, so it failed. But the thought definitely counted! A+ for effort.
There is nothing is more rewarding than seeing your children's love for each other, is there?
Baby Jesus arrived safely to the creche at church; 9:00 Mass had us singing all the best carols. So crowded that I had to stretch to receive The Eucharist,a nd just sent out one hand--and nearly dropped the host! That would have been a first. I think the Eucharistic Minister missed her calling as a nun--pricinpal!-- from the look she gave me!
Rack of lamb, asparagus, haricot vert once my call is over at three (so I can drink).
Lots of sweets treats here from my sweet neighbors that I'll try not to consume.
My family is getting snowed in in Michigan; youngest brother chose to turn home rather than drive the forty miles to the best meal of his year--he wasn't up to killing his family in the process.

Rey was the least of the movie's problems. The Infinity War trailer was pretty good though.
Our former editor, Fritz Updike wrote a column called Purely Personal Prejudices. This one he ran every Christmas. We run it yearly, still.
Fritz worked at the Rome Sentinel from 1926, the year before my great, great grandfather died, until he passed on in 1995, when our son was eight -- so he knew all six generations of our family at the Sentinel.
Shortly before he died I complimented him for not so much the extraordinary things he did, but doing the ordinary things so extraordinarily well.
Consider reading it. The column represents all that is good about a long line of family and community.
Russian election officials on Monday formally barred Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny from running for president, prompting calls from him for a boycott of next year's vote.
The Central Election Commission decided unanimously that the anti-corruption crusader isn't eligible to run.
Navalny is implicitly barred from running for office because of a conviction in a fraud case which has been viewed as political retribution. He could have run if he was given a special dispensation or if his conviction was cancelled.
We've had this on both televisions since yesterday -- couldn't sleep in the middle of the night and sat here alone, giggling and smiling at the animals playing. Sweet little pig. Kittens. Puppies.
By contrast, though the CNN panel referred to a video montage of predecessor Barack Obama saying "Merry Christmas" several times which was shown earlier in the week, Barack Obama and his administration generally avoided the "Merry Christmas" greeting in official communications, as seen in Christmas cards from 2016 ("Happy Holidays" and "holiday season"), 2015 ("warmest wishes for health and happiness this holiday season"), 2014 ("spirit of the holidays"), 2013 ("joy of the holidays"), 2012 ("joy of the holidays"), 2011 ("may your holidays shine"), 2010 ("may your holidays be filled"), and 2009 ("Season's Greetings" and "a joyous holiday season").
Merry Christmas from Worcester (daughter-in-law's family is feeding me). Our itinerary takes us to Worcester, Needham (oldest child and son-in-law's family), and West Roxbury (friends of the family). And I received good Christmas gifts. For example, youngest child, who knows how skilled I am at putting holes in socks, got me a supply for 2018! Son and daughter-in-law are getting plenty of gifts for their soon to be greeting the earth daughter (due date is January 28th).
Biggest disappointment was oldest telling me she tried to get me an online subscription to the Rome Sentinel, but was informed only the paper version can be the subject of a gift. I may remedy this by giving myself an online subscription as a new year's gift.
Wolf ShitStir is kidding himself.
Wolfie my friend, was it common to hear LIBTARDS saying MERRY CHRISTMAS the last 8 years. Mr ShitStir, don't bull shit us, we know what you are about.
Lanie Kazan has a net worth of 5 MILLLLLION DOLLARS.
sbw, I started to tear up reading Fritz Updikes wonderful reminences of live in simpler times.
When I was a young boy of 12, we moved from Newfoundland to the Plattsburgh area (USAF brat) and because they were building the new base there was no base housing. First we lived in a home in Plattsburgh that was owned by the Chair of the Romance Languages dept at Plattsburgh-SUNY who was on sabbatical in Rome for a year.
After the labor strike and our temporary duty down at McCoy AFB (now Orlando International Airport:) we came back to Plattsburgh and my Dad decided to buy a farm south of town in the Keesville, Ausable Chasm area. It came equipped with a horse drawn cutter sleigh which we found out was an original Albany. My Dad and the farmer next to us, a Mr. Arthur, restored it and painted it a bright red with white piping.
He loaned us one of his team horses and showed my Dad how to handle the reins and we spent many a winter day and eveninog enjoying sleigh rides across the fields. Down the road from us was the Forrence family of the Forrence Apple Orchards and Cold Storage business. I think they were the largest MacIntosh growers in the States. Their son, Virgil was an All-American at Cornell. My boyhood hero.
The farmhouse was 18th century with embossed tin ceiling panels and in the foyer a ceiling hook to hang the tree from during Christmas. And boy, did those hearty upstate snowbound rural families know how to spend Christmas, much the same as Fritz's grandparents. To this day my most vivid memories are at that farmhouse and the neighbors.
Wow. The Forrence family is still in business growning MacIntosh. Run by Virgil's great-grandson, Seth. Boy am I old. And it wasn't Cornell but Ithaca Conservatory and in Violin. I don't remember him playing anything musical. But here is a damn interesting article about apples, hail, labor and Jamaica.
I was in a furniture store in Hickory, NC, sometime around 1995 and they featured a bed they said they'd sold to Donald Trump. I think this is it. It was around $11,000.
Christmas was a little strange this year, as my sister and husband did not come over, due to a 72 hour stomach flu. I can't ever remember having spent a Christmas Eve without my kid sister, although there must have been some, since I am 8 years older than she.
I only like the first one. You're given an impression that the Jedi Knights have special powers and elevated awareness/ethics. But in the last episode I saw they were shockingly common and lightweight.
No problem, sbw. By the way, my oldest tells me that "Twas the Night Before Christmas" (I know that's not the official name, but that's how I think of it) first appeared in your publication. Is that true?
Wrong Sentinel. It was Troy, New York Sentinel in 1823. Troy is where RPI is located. Great college hockey team, not Bean Pot eligible but just as good. I have hired many an engineer from them.
Why would he post a family pic that’s 4 years old? Especially when the Lil’ Obamlettes are obviously growing up, and 4 years makes a huge difference at this age. My Bozlets are 17 and 18…no way I would send out (or tweet) a Christmas pic from when they were 13 & 14.
Let the speculation commence…hmmm."
JimNorCal, it's a gotcha post to counter Trump's claim that the prevalence of Merry Christmas this year is due to him, which has set the whole coexist gang off.
Just texted Momma who is walking our 3 dogs today along with Dartmouth, and Momma just replied that they spotted 3 wolves ahead on the trail. Yikes! Here's our back and forth from a few minutes ago:
Momma: Walking dogs
Me: Stay warm
Momma: 3 wolves blocking path
Had to leave
Me: Wow. Be very careful
Momma: With p at BLM trails now
Very determined
Lucky we saw and turned
Almost followed us
Me: Whoa. were the wolves healthy looking?
Momma: Kinda kept coming and then turning
Skinny but tall
I love all the bragging (actually panic) about Obama's Christmas spirit.
Trump is just kicking their asses every which way including Sunday. And he's not even a religious person, which makes it even funnier. Has Melania held a prayer breakfast yet?
Momma today was carrying Bear Spray. She may re-evaluate.
We had a wolf pack on one of the trails 2 years back that I was aware of since they ate another hikers dog, but they are generally very secretive and you won't see them. A jogger on Elmendorf AFB nearby was killed a few years back by a wolf-pack but I don't see any reports of recent Wolf sitings in Anchorage.
Here was one caught on camera in Anchorage from a year back, hauling away a caribou carcass:
It'll be interesting hearing Dartmouth's take on the encounter when they get home. Should be exciting!
Using Twitter on Christmas Eve to intimidate a witness (McCabe) in a criminal investigation is not a very Christian way to celebrate the holiday. But it does make Mr. Mueller’s job easier and that’s a nice thing to do. Merry Christmas!
I'm sure it would SBW. I was just looking at the Alaska Fish and Game link on how to deal with belligerent wolves if encountered on the trail: Living With Wolves
I'll make sure Momma reports them to BLM but my guess is she'll do that first thing when she gets in from the walk. She knows some of the Park Ranger guys just from bumping into them at the trail heads frequently. What a memorable Christmas walk:)
Hoping everyone is blessed with peace & prosperity, today and always!
I am grateful for all the wit and wisdom , read at JOM, throughout the up's and down's of Life 😇 . ...and relieved there are more sensible, honorable people in the world, than what the decaying left liberal media/politicos want you to believe!
The "Bush ethics lawyer" also tweeted a thank you to Obama for his Merry Christmas tweet.
Thank you Mr. President. We miss you.
Who's We?
Hamas? ISIS? The Nork's? The Iranian Mullahs? The Cuban Dictators? The Taliban? I know they all miss Obama, but who else are you including in that We? It definitely ain't me.
Merry Christmas to you and your family as well, TM!

sbw, thank you.
Love personified.
Grandparents are a special blessing. I was fortunate to have all four of mine well into my teens.

Thanks for letting us hang around here for so many years. Hope you and yours have a very Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas to everyone else too.

Mr ShitStir, don't bull shit us, we know what you are about.

sbw, I started to tear up reading Fritz Updikes wonderful reminences of live in simpler times.
Again, thanks for sharing.

Merry Christmas to you and your family, TM! Thank you for all you do for us.
Merry Christmas, JOM! It is truly a great one. Very thankful.
MM, thank you for that exhaustive Mar-a-Lago link. It took me over an hour just to scroll through all the photos!
glasater, xoxo. Here's to meeting more JOMers in the future!

Posted by: JimNorCal | December 25, 2017 at 02:39 PM
No problem, sbw. By the way, my oldest tells me that "Twas the Night Before Christmas" (I know that's not the official name, but that's how I think of it) first appeared in your publication. Is that true?

TC,
Wrong Sentinel. It was Troy, New York Sentinel in 1823. Troy is where RPI is located. Great college hockey team, not Bean Pot eligible but just as good. I have hired many an engineer from them.

Not only have the Obama's switched over to Merry Christmas, but ...
A BJG commenter inquires:
"Hussein tweets this Christmas greeting about 2 hours ago.
https://mobile.twitter.com/BarackObama/status/945324527520804866
Nice family pic, huh? Only problem is the nice family pic is from 2013.
https://mobile.twitter.com/LisaMei62/status/945356518140121093/photo/2
Why would he post a family pic that’s 4 years old? Especially when the Lil’ Obamlettes are obviously growing up, and 4 years makes a huge difference at this age. My Bozlets are 17 and 18…no way I would send out (or tweet) a Christmas pic from when they were 13 & 14.
Let the speculation commence…hmmm."

JimNorCal, it's a gotcha post to counter Trump's claim that the prevalence of Merry Christmas this year is due to him, which has set the whole coexist gang off.

New York Sentinel in 1823
Our predecessor newspaper, the Rome Republican, began in 1821. It became the Democratic Sentinel in 1838. In 1854 my family began working there.

Just texted Momma who is walking our 3 dogs today along with Dartmouth, and Momma just replied that they spotted 3 wolves ahead on the trail. Yikes! Here's our back and forth from a few minutes ago:
Momma: Walking dogs
Me: Stay warm
Momma: 3 wolves blocking path
Had to leave
Me: Wow. Be very careful
Momma: With p at BLM trails now
Very determined
Lucky we saw and turned
Almost followed us
Me: Whoa. were the wolves healthy looking?
Momma: Kinda kept coming and then turning
Skinny but tall
Me: Yikes. Very scary.
Momma: At least 3
Will text later

Does Momma carry a .357, or just a 9mm?
Posted by: Extraneus | December 25, 2017 at 04:07 PM
Daddy, ask her what she named them. We have a new 8 ft gator in the lake and I named her gracie.
Posted by: Jane | December 25, 2017 at 04:08 PM
Well their potential powers were rather fantastic, but clearly they were not paying attention. A little grumpy Mark hamill goes a long way.
Posted by: narciso | December 25, 2017 at 04:16 PM
I love all the bragging (actually panic) about Obama's Christmas spirit.
Trump is just kicking their asses every which way including Sunday. And he's not even a religious person, which makes it even funnier. Has Melania held a prayer breakfast yet?
Posted by: Extraneus | December 25, 2017 at 04:26 PM
Ext,
Momma today was carrying Bear Spray.

Should be exciting!

daddy, would a 5-shot Taurus Judge .45 Long Colt/.410 shotshell revolver discourage several members of a pack of wolves so the others would depart?

I'm sure it would SBW. I was just looking at the Alaska Fish and Game link on how to deal with belligerent wolves if encountered on the trail: Living With Wolves
I'll make sure Momma reports them to BLM but my guess is she'll do that first thing when she gets in from the walk. She knows some of the Park Ranger guys just from bumping into them at the trail heads frequently. What a memorable Christmas walk:)
