The Big Horn mountains are spectacular. We were driving east on 90 through this barren alkali and tumbleweed desert, giving me a preview of most of South Dakota, when all of a sudden this huge mountain was in front of us. There were so many switchbacks (manual transmission FTL) that at one point I got out of the car to take a picture of what I'd been through (which came out amazingly well) and, as I was off to the side, a moving van was gearing down going in the opposite direction. I sheepishly walked back to the car since Mrs H had told me that trucks would come through and I told her she was FOS. Anyway once you reach a certain level it's more or less like a plateau with some variances in elevation. We probably could've spent a week exploring things off to the side. We ended up camping across a creek from a herd of cattle that I guess had been driven there to graze since the grass there was fairly lush. There was another couple from Ohio camping there only they'd come up from the east. I asked them how arduous their ascent was and they made it sound as bad as what we'd been through. It was a piece of cake in terms of having no switchbacks and long straight sections. I have no idea how they managed the western descent.

lyle

Flatlanders! 😬

Thanks for asking, maryrose. I had a contrast MRI last week and will hear results this Thursday. This was to check the injury to one of the arteries in my neck. If I get good news about that - all that is left is a Jan. follow-up visit with the spinal doctor which is (possibly) the last one. He stated my fracture would continue to heal for up to a year but I can drive, work, etc. I continue with physical therapy to regain the range of motion in my neck.

Currently, have a bad cold/cough like many others here. I notice my energy level is still not up to par and I am trying to rest when I feel tired and be patient about regaining stamina.

I received the magnesium in the mail that Kev recommended and began that last week. I do believe I am sleeping better.

Emotionally, I still have my moments of fear - especially when someone else is driving. I assume it is a feeling of lack of control although I was driving when the accident occurred.

I view every day a bit differently now. I see how fragile life can be and how important it is show and tell others that you love them. So glad to be here to celebrate Christmas with my friends and family!

Let's recall what Megyn accused Ailes of.

Kelly claims that after months of harassment, the 76-year-old “crossed a new line” in January 2006 when he grabbed her and repeatedly tried to kiss her. Upon shoving him away, Kelly alleges Ailes asked her the “ominous question” of “When is your contract up?” before trying to kiss her for a third time.

I think Roger Ailes should resign from the Senate and DIAF.

Congratulations on making it back to this point, Momto2. You're an inspiration how you've overcome so much with nary a complaint when I'm sure it was a very painful and physically taxing recovery.

I like just salt and dill on salmon, Gus, but maybe that's just me.

Wow. Just came back from a Christmas recital at our friend's place where he mostly attracts classical chamber music performers. This was unique in that it was a lightly jazzed version of a nice array of Christmas stuff.

The group was a quartet soprano, vibes, piano, clarinet, and flute. As great as they all were, the vibes dude was an old pro, Tom Collier, who's played with a lot of groups over the decades.

Afterward, I asked him if he was part of the Wrecking Crew and he smiles at the suggestion. He got to L.A. toward the end of the '70s so he was a little late for that, but ended up playing with several of the later crew in other gigs.

lyle

Are you grilling or baking? Skin still on (hopefully)? Dry rub with the seasoning and let in sit for at least 30. If grilling, preheat to about 450. Oil up the grate and cook it flesh side down for about 4 minutes. Salmon has a lot of oil so be careful to not let it flame up and blacken. Flip over onto skin side for about 6 minutes. Ease your spatula between the skin and flesh to remove from the grill; cover with foil and it sit for at least 5 minutes.

If you're feeling ambitious, finely mince garlic and mix with butter and microwave it for 30 seconds. Squeeze fresh lemon into this and add minced chives (scallions work as well); add panko bread crumbs and grated Parmesan to form a paste. Add olive oil if needed to keep it moist. Slather the cooked salmon with a very light bit of Dijon mustard, coat with the paste and broil it until browned. You can thank me later. Bon appetit!

Just received an estimate for a bathroom remodel and backdoor replacement. New, young contractor just starting out. He wrote down a number. I wrote down a number. Then we swapped numbers. He said $2500 and I said $3500. Before we showed the numbers I said "You are bound to work for the higher number." He agreed.

He was floating on air as he left. We've seen his work. Was referred to us by the roofer who was with us the week before Big Fowl Day.

Love giving work to people that are human, humble, and honest. The roofer, it turned out, had just received on the very day he came to bid on our roof a diagnosis of "pre-diabetic."

We have so much needing to be done on our home because I was too laid up to keep up. He had asked me what illness I'd been suffering from.

I told him about the reversal. The young man started to cry. He turned his back to me to try and gain his composure. Young Chinese guy; grew up in the Bay Area.

So he left that day with two "bibles" written by my doctor. As it turns out, his wife had been reading snippets published by my doc but hadn't invested in the bibles.

He called the other day. He said his wife is giving him raw meals twice a day now. He's not taking metformin. And he's fasting on weekends.

One good turn deserved another so he referred today's contractor to us. It's like we have a whole new set of relatives. These men are talented too. Their work is not only competent and functional--- it's damn beautiful.

Lucky us.

Thanks for all the kind words today everybody toward those of us who are sharing about recovering from illness. There's a lot of grace on this blog.

Peace.

--Spend a night or two in Rock Springs or Green River and get back with me.--

Spent some time there in the wild west eighties. Nasty places then.
Loved the raptors and antelope in the surrounding high desert though.

Speaking of raptors... a couple of arial battles today between big black crows and raptors foraying out from the raptor preserve on the Marin Headlands.

Looked to be youngsters, no fighting notches yet on their wings. They could fly upside down and fight with both claws though.

Rare to see air battles this time of year.

Just lucky i guess.

I think this cop shooting was linked already.
The cops' [apparently the order giver and the shooter were two different people] orders were bizarre and close to nuts and impossible to follow.
Legalized murder. So he moved his hand slightly while obeying ridiculous, nearly incomprehensible orders and now he's dead and the cop is exonerated.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Probably ravens, KK. Their population has exploded in the last few decades and they love to harass birds of prey.

Extraneus

Very nice, lyle. I'll try that.

For years, we've used what I think is a Betty Crocker recipe for Dijon mustard glaze, which works on both chicken and salmon. It's great for broiling. With chicken, do one side first.

1 tbsp dijon mustard
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp lemon pepper seasoning
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp oregano
cayenne to slightly beyond taste

yer right, Iggy. anything big black and ugly with wings was a "crow" in southern Illinois (back in my farmin days).

Speaking of ravens we have a small band of them that have apparently decided to make their home here in our central Connecticut neighborhood over the last few years. I am not sure how the climate change folks square this with the warming hypothesis since previously they were confined to the Berkshires and the occasional sighting in the cooler forests in the northwest part of the state. Shouldn't we be seeing boobies and frigatebirds instead?

daddy

Spend a night or two in Rock Springs or Green River and get back with me.

I love Rock Springs. The Green Gander was a great dive down near the railroad yard and as fine a place to learn how to drink whiskey as anywhere in America! On the jukebox I distinctly remember they had a killer version of :Cab Driver" by the Mills Brothers, and also this gem by Hoagy Carmichael - Old Buttermilk Sky

Ole buttermilk sky
Dont'cha fail me when I'm needin' you most
Hang a moon above her hitchin' post
Hitch me to the one I love

I'll drink to that!

My college roommate the artist moved out there with his wife and opened up a Frame Shop about 1980. I would visit them on leave from the Navy 40 years back and back then I was a distance runner, so I would hype up on coffee, then climb that beautiful bluff/plateau just behind the Castle Rock outcrop overlooking the town, and run for miles along the edge of that uplift and never felt more alive in my life. Spectacular.

As for Rock Springs, the best thing about that berg was a place outside town called "Den's Critter Barn" where a guy sold fossils he collected from 60 Million BC and previous. It was mental Disneyland to go into his shop and prowl around. He had thousands of fossils and many were of great Museum quality, so I always bought fossils as Xmas presents. They also had in town an old Chinese restaurant we would go to which was a treat for Peter and his wife, and it always reminded me of the huge Chinese Coolie Massacres that had taken place there 130 years earlier during all the railroad building.

So both towns hold a special place in heart, but YMMV:)

My experience with magnesium began with my doctor explaining how pharma can interact moderately with magnesium supplements--- blood psi meds can interact with mag and cause pressure to get too low.

We avoided that altogether by dumping the blood pressure medication. At the time my psi was at 140 all the time.

I came off the blood presh meds and never looked back. At that time my doctor said his rule on blood presh meds for people under 65 was "take them if your psi exceeded your age+100."

Mag and blood psi meds can have some interaction but it would be mostly in the area of reducing blood psi below the norm your doc has set for you.

Please consult with your doctor. Please. Please.

One of our favorite salmon recipes:

1/3 cup real maple syrup
2 Tbsp. soy sauce
2 tsp. Dijon mustard

Salt/pepper

Salt and pepper each piece. Combine 1st 3 ingredients and brush over salmon. Allow to marinate about 30 minutes. Grill or broil in oven about 3-5 minutes per side (depends on thickness ) Brush with marinade a few times during grilling.

emzed

Thanks, KK—I do plan to consult with my doctor before doing anything, but was interested in hearing JOMer’s on the subject.

For Ig: I saw that video of the cop shooting in AZ— it was utterly horrifying.

Manuel Transmission

Kev,

Your Pa was only a hop/skip south of where my family moved in '36 up on the Yellowstone River. The town was originally called Stillwater, but when the railroad came through they made them change it to Columbus (barf), because they didn't want it confused with Stillwater MN. All the locals called it Sheepdip, because the local whisky tasted like that. In fact, the Atlas Bar in Columbus has the first liquor license issued when Montana became a state. After I was born, we moved onto our first ranch SW of there along the edge of the wilderness area north of Yellowstone Park.

As it turns out another bud of mine up here on our rock was born down in Thermopolis and went to the local Indian School as a kid. I usually give him crap about that being out on the flatland and doesn't really count as 'western' WY.

Janeprobably about 10 minutes after getting there

I'm too late Gus, but for the next time I use chipote pepper in hot red sauce, mayo, mustard and ketchup. Slather it over the salmon, wrap in foil and grill till done. Don't flip it. It is incredibly moist and tasty. I promise.

Captain Hate

Ravens were all over the place in northern Arizona last fall. Smart birds.

boatbuilder

I'm just wondering...how did the locals know what sheepdip tasted like?

Manuel Transmission

We've done a lot of RR work around Green River. West of town up on the local plateau we kept noticing big birds soaring nearby and finally figured they were Whooping Cranes. On the weekend we drove down to the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Off to the side there was a group of Cranes and as we slowly crept towards them they finally decided to leave which was a fairly laborious effort. The got up into ground effect and then cruised over to a small bluff where they picked up a thermal and took the elevator up like it was a normal everyday thing. Always wondered if they can see a thermal.

Beasts of England

That sounds good, Momto2!! My guy at the dive says cumin, for what that's worth.

Manuel Transmission

boatbuilder,

If you've ever wrestled sheep to get them run through the sheepdip, you can't help but get that crap splattered on you. :)

Yeah, BTDT.

boatbuilder

I guess at that point you don't care what the whiskey tastes like!

Dave (in MA)

Came in late, but surprised not to see any magnesium in the salmon recipes.

DJT tweeted about "lonely Brian Ross" earlier today. :)

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Same out here boatbuilder. Ravens were always mountain birds of 4-5,000 feet and up.
Now they're right down to the Sacramento Valley around here and there are lots of them.
And as CH says they are smart and mischievous.
There is a piece of rimrock BLM land I often go to that looks down on the valley all the way to the bay area. The ravens ride the thermals and when they spot my knothead Chester romping around they start swooping down over him, intentionally taunting him, until they have led him back and forth over the ridge several times til he's exhausted.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

No salmon here.
Homemade Chicken Parmesan made perfect with the diced, sauteed cap of a wild Manzanita Mushroom, alongside some grilled green beans and sauteed shallots.

One of my family's favorite salmon is to broil it with a little salt and herbes de provence. At the same time in a saucepan simmer 2 c. of OJ, 1/4 c. each of soy and rice wine vinegar, 1/2 c. of packed brown sugar, and 2 tbsp. of chopped pickled jalepenos. Simmer until reduced by about half. Thicken with corn starch if needed and drizzle on fish when served. It is always a hit.

I was gone at dinner at my sister's, so these above tweets from the President are late being posted.

I am glad he is hitting them back. I saw that meme of the empty seats start yesterday from some democrat operative, right after the rally ended. Since I had seen it live, I knew that photo was a fake and the dem was called out on it by many people.

Weigel has no excuse. He could have loooked at other photos on line, such as those from David Martosko of the Daily Mail, or looked at video. This was a deliberate hit job and I agree with the President: Weigel should be fired.

http://www.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-futures-exchange-gemini-scheduled-maintenance-2017-12

This is not a good sign. Gemini, the Bitcoin exchange that will provide Bitcoin market data pricing to the CBOE for the Bitcoin futures trading starting this weekend scheduled a maintenance for this morning that ran longer than expected.

Seems to be a scale-ability problem. As trading volume increases they have problems keeping up. I suspect they were adding capacity this morning and it took longer than planned.

Meanwhile some people were unable to trade on the system while the Bitcoin lost $1,500 in value.

It's going to be interesting to see how the futures trade when the "cash" market disappears from time to time.

The got up into ground effect and then cruised over to a small bluff where they picked up a thermal and took the elevator up like it was a normal everyday thing. Always wondered if they can see a thermal.

What an interesting question, Manny T. Natural Selection would probably say that whichever Whooping Cranes are better at detecting thermals than their competitors would have done better at surviving over the millennia, and if whatever it was that helped them detect thermals was in some way inheritable it'd be passed on into the general gene pool and probably predominate. Sounds like an interesting question for some ornithology grad student to take up if it hasn't already been figured out.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

daddy,

I follow David Martosko and that is exactly what he was saying.

Martosko did post the correct picture on line in response to another poster who was pushing the empty stadium story, but if Weigel got the information from him it was from coming across his Twitter feed.

 narcisoyea

Interestingly, hoary carmichael was the fellow that Ian Fleming though bond would be most like in appearance.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

daddy,

I will bet that Weigel got about 1000 pictures in replies to his post from people who were there or watched it live on TV, but he didn't want to say he was yielding to Trump supporters, so he went looking for pictures from reporters who were on the trip. (Martosko was traveling with the President.)

The earliest fake picture I saw on Twitter was right after the rally ended and it was a guy who labeled himself a democrat activist. That is where I think Weigel got the photo, since his fake photo and the dem's seem identical.
