Late to the game, but I think you are all on the case. The current political/educational mess goes back to the late 1800s and, as rse rightly points out, John Dewey’s romantic vision of democracy that dumbed down the teaching of teachers.

Gramsci’s insight was that collectivist winning required not war, but a long march through institutions.

Bomber Bill Ayers may have been a johnny-come-lately to formal education, but he knew how to use schooling to pervert language and minds. Teachers trained to teach but not know became unwitting, unthinking bombmakers.

Many Boomers aren’t the problem as much as they are the weapon.

Our job now, as old boomers, is to live long enough to teach our grandchildren how, with so little effort, what fools so many of us can be.

Steve Bannon describes Trump Tower meeting with Russians as 'treasonous': Report

Former White House strategist Steve Bannon called a Trump Tower meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and a group of Russians “treasonous” and “unpatriotic,” according to a new book about President Trump’s first year in office.

Bannon said special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia will “crack Don Junior like an egg on national TV.”

Bannon made the comments to author Michael Wolff for his new book, “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” which was obtained by the Guardian before its release next week.

Trump’s son, son-in-law and White House adviser Jared Kushner, and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort met with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya at Trump Tower in New York in June 2016 during the presidential campaign.

The meeting came under scrutiny after an intermediary promised documents that would be damaging to rival Hillary Clinton. “I love it,” Trump Jr. replied in an email.

“The three senior guys in the campaign thought it was a good idea to meet with a foreign government inside Trump Tower in the conference room on the 25th floor – with no lawyers. They didn’t have any lawyers,” Bannon told Wolff. “Even if you thought that this was not treasonous, or unpatriotic, or bad shit, and I happen to think it’s all of that, you should have called the FBI immediately.”

Clapper said he'd never heard of Papadopoulos.

“There were other factors that I think were the stimulus for the investigation and the revelation about George Papadopoulos — which was not a name on my radar scope when I left — I think also was another factor,” Clapper said on CNN.

Also in his interview, Clapper claimed that parts of the dossier have been corroborated. But when pressed about which sections of the 35-page Democrat-funded report have been verified, Clapper cited only two claims from the dossier that have nothing to do with campaign collusion.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “animus” towards Hillary Clinton “and the determination of clearly favoring…Trump to win the presidency,” were the two dossier allegations that Clapper says have been corroborated.

What would we do without studies?

Study: Young male migrants fuel rise in violence in Germany

BERLIN (AP) - The recent influx of mostly young, male migrants into Germany has led to an increase in violent crime in the country, according to a government-funded study published Wednesday.

The study used figures from the northern state of Lower Saxony to examine the impact of refugee arrivals on crime in 2015 and 2016, a period when the number of violent crimes reported increased by 10.4 percent.

The authors concluded that 92 percent of the additional crimes recorded could be attributed to the increase in refugee numbers.

I just saw that story and Brett Baier of Fox is rubbing his hands together in anticipation.I will wait a little bit, since the story is based on what the Guardian SAYS it has seen in a book by Michael Wolffe, so there are several levels of misquoting, interpretation, and propaganda to go through.

If Bannon was in a feud with Ivanka and Jared, or with Don Jr., it was beyond foolish of him. The President has run a family business for years, Jared set up the digital operation, and the President trusts his kids' opinions.

And I have to agree with you about Moore.

Ext, so now the Left will embrace a Bannon? LOL
Tho that denunciation of Don Jr has a fake news feel to it.

Clarice Feldman

Definitely sounds like 'fake news to me, too,jim

A Woman Tries To Freshen the Air Around a Stinky Co-Worker – Gets Fired

A bizarre lawsuit out of Indianapolis revolves around life at the office and body odor. As IndyStar reports, the mess began when workers in the city’s magistrate court complained about a co-worker’s chronic body odor. That prompted Amber Bridges, as part of her role as lead staff, to place air fresheners around the office. Soon, others did the same, and the co-worker with the body-odor problem eventually complained to human resources. Bridges then got fired, the explanation being that she had created a hostile work environment.

If the Bannon quotes are true, it sounds like Bannon is still a little sore from getting kicked to the curb. And the humiliation he suffered in Alabama didn’t help. Steve is not pleased to now be a bit player while Kushner and Don Jr are still in the game.

Report what to the FBI, had a meeting about nothing? Meet with foreign government? What? Either that Examiner story is fake news or maybe Bannon does hit the bottle.

It's interesting that "deep state" is a wacko conspiracy theory despite Lois Lerner, the tarmac meeting, etc ... yet "Russian Collusion" is a legit investigation.

22. By this point, the dossier had been used to support a FISA warrant, cloaked as FBI intel. Obama had given the dossier the highest natsec classification he could, on the urging of Brennan.

More speculation stated as fact. Why do they do it?

I've long wondered why the birth rate plummeted in 1965. Was it the low Depression/WWII birthrate or the JFK ass.? Or all the screaming existing kids? At the same time, the crime rate began rising. They talk about '68, but '65 was the real turning point.

Don Surber approves Sen Hatch's retirement as a wise and responsible personal decision.

But check out this question from the article. Trivia experts to the fore!
"Without looking it up, tell me who swore (Hatch) in as a senator."

Two levels to the same subject. I read the “authorization” issued to Mueller. Nothing in it about authority to issue immunity or pardons to witnesses. News (fake?) articles have opined on what kind of mileage SC can get with immunity. Is he authorized to do that? How does that work? Should require DOJ approval.

More general, (think Comey/Hillary) just who can issue immunity, and under what authority? Any FBI agent W/O approval, director only, or DOJ? If so, how high up DOJ? Can a typical US Atty do this unsupervised? Can someone point me to a statute that controls this? Can immunity be undone when new evidence “further” incriminates compromises an immunized witness?

Regarding that quote by Tom Barrack at the end of the Guardian article, Maggie Halberman (no friend of Trump) went to Barrack for a follow-up, and this is what he said:

Maggie Haberman

Barrack said he spoke to Wolffe once, says he never said the quote attributed to him to Wolffe or anyone. "Totally false," Barrack said by phone just now.

And that is why I didn't get too upset about that Guardian story. It's no doubt full of lies and exaggeration, and probably the book is as well.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Captain Hate,

All of this hand-wringing about public discourse is driving me crazy. Do the Never Trump people not see television and movies? Are they paying no attention to rap music or the behavior of pro athletes?

It is not the President's job to get everyone speaking in more elevated tones. One man, even if it's the president, swimming against the tide of popular culture, is not going to do any good. The President speaks the language of average Americans. In the process, he has made the presidency more understandable and accessible to them.

Also, I have seen no evidence that the President is a bully. Yes, he did fight back during the campaign, but I consider that a good thing. I see no reason why Jeb Bush should have been given deference just because of his family and his big pot of money.

And frankly,if Jeb could be cowed by Trump there is no doubt in my mind that Xi and Putin would have steamrolled right over him.

Captain Hate

You know my opinion on punching bag Repukes, Miss Marple.

The Infamous Ignatz

The same creeps who think Trump is icky just love Barack "bring a gun to a knife fight" Obama.
Vomit forth some specious crap about Neihbur or know how to pronounce Camus, regardless of whether you know anything about either more than one thin sheet of paper deep or, most infamously, just get your pants pressed and these dumb bastards will overlook half wit shucking and jiving, not so subtle flippings of the bird and uh, uh, uh okie dokes until the cows come home.
It's NOT that Trump is crass.
It's that he has upset the natural order by being a REPUBLICAN who is crass.
It's not far from Stockholm Syndrome; the nevertrump dandies are used to a world in which the left alternately kicks them in the head or pets them depending on whether they stay on the reservation or not. If they do stay and politely lose they get stroked. It's not that Trump is crass; it's that he means to WIN. If he does win how are Billy or Bret ever going to get petted again?

Captain Hate

I have no deep affinity for Bannon but I need something more than al-Guardian to get out the long knives. And Drudge is still pouting that Santa didn't fill his stocking with dicks.

morning all. and fyi-not a boomer. not even close.

James D.

Ig, those same creeps also loved Hillary and her "bimbo eruption squads" and enemies lists and attacking half the country as deplorable and irredeemable.

Patterico is nuts, Trumps has not "damaged the culture". Trump is like a stage actor who knows he has to use a loud voice and exaggerated gestures to be understood in the back of the theater.

That Greenfield article is really good! I think he is absolutely right in his assessment.

I am not a New Yorker so didn't know about him pitting the tabloids against each other, but he sure is doing that with Fox and CNN!

and I've got nothing to add ... but will note that the NYT gave a whole op-ed column to let Fusion GPS rehabilitate the Russia story-more graywash. Powerline is on it

what surprised me though is the outright denial that they knew anything about the Trump Tower meeting with the Typhoid Natasha (the only actual Russian in the meeting)-she was at Fusion GPS sponsored events before and after the meeting (the film screening and some congressional testimony) ... just a coincidence I'm sure.

Thomas Collins

Bannon wants good sales for his book and to undercut Trump.

Re Hillary: I'd be stunned if she, Obama or any associates were indicted. The main benefit of what is coming out is making clear to the coup plotters that if they continue, everyone is going to be bloodied.

As usual, the long dead Greeks and Italians are most relevant: Trump's allies are making it clear that The Resistance is not going to be able to take down the Prince without a vicious fight, and that failure to do so will result in nasty consequences. I think 2018 will go down as the Year of the Temporary Truce.

Morning all.

GenX'er here, 1965 and all that...

I will believe that Clinton will be held accountable only after 5+ years of incarceration. She's guilty as sin and looks like something the cat dragged in, but THE MACHINE that is WASHINGTON DC will somehow not pursue it. I would love to be proven wrong...

for the left it is more like a hudna.

TC - While many think that Trump will bring war, I believe that he will bring peace. He is unpredictable to a point and that is why leaders of other countries will think more than twice before starting anything. We will still get "sabre-rattling" from the usual miscreants, but likely will go no further than that.

Thomas Collins

I think that will be the ultimate result, PDinDetroit. I also think, however, that we're in for a tumultuous ferry ride in the meantime. Stock up on the Dramamine!

Obama Officials ‘Regret’ Not Standing Up For Iranian Protesters Like Trump

Meanwhile, Michael Ledeen thinks regime change is quite possible in Iran, and thinks the Trump Administration is playing things fine so far.

AFA, lead organizers of Boycott Target, take a moment to praise Pres Trump for keeping promises to pro-life people--

President Donald Trump begins the New Year with many pro-life accomplishments. During the U.S. Presidential campaign, then-candidate Donald Trump made several commitments in a letter to the pro-life community.

President Trump committed to:
Nominate pro-life justices to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Sign into law the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would end painful late-term abortions nationwide.
Defund Planned Parenthood as long as they continue to perform abortions and reallocating their funding to community health centers that provide comprehensive health care for women.
Make the Hyde Amendment permanent law to protect taxpayers from having to pay for abortions.
In 2017, President Trump clearly demonstrated a commitment to keep his pro-life promises.

President Trump has:
Appointed pro-life judge Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Reinstated the Mexico City Policy to end tax dollars paying for overseas abortions.
Defunded the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) that is complicit with China's abortion policy.
Signed a resolution (H.J. Res 43) under the Congressional Review Act to give states the ability to ban Title X funding to Planned Parenthood.
Officially reversed the Obama administration's HHS contraceptive mandate for employers with religious and moral objections. President Trump's reversal is being challenged by Pennsylvania and California District Court judges.
I encourage you to pray for President Trump and that he will remain committed to fight for the sanctity of human life.

Sign the AFA petition thanking President Trump for nominating pro-life judges and for advancing pro-life legislation and policy.

The left still doesn't get that the best way to avoid war is to prepare for it and show a willingness to fight, despite about 3000 years of history that bears this out.

Wolff has shown some integrity in the past, so it would be surprising and disappointing if he lied about Barrack. My first money would be on the Grauniad making it up.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Three VP's together. I am struck in Walter Mondale's resemblance to George Soros and Biden's profile sort of resembling Jimmy Carter's.

More than a few mentioned in Wolff's book claim he invented or changed quotes on them. Check out his wiki.

jimmyk on iPhone

Criticism from other journalists is maybe a plus for him. I guess I had in mind his line that "journalists should be stenographers." That would be a huge improvement over what they are today. On the other hand, stenographers should get the quotes right.

Is Bannon now less trusted than Manafort?

Jack is Back!

Snowed in Tallahasse. Everything iced up in Live Oak between Jax and Tallahassee. 46F and heavy rain where I am 100 miles south of Jax.

Freezing rain across parts of N. Florida. Calling for 5-8" of snow in Charleston, SC.

I have to take a ThermaFlu because I feel like one coming on. Even Valdosta getting up to 1".

What they call a "bomb" because of how fast and how deep the barometric falls.

Savannah 5-8" also. Southampton is getting 6-12" of global warming according to the Patch.

Stay warm along I-95 and do not drive.
