Miss Marple the Deplorable

My daughter and I are venturing out. We are going over to the west side to get the furnace part, which has finally arrived. Then we are going to the grocery and also are going to get lunch at Olive Garden, because she has a gift card she won at work.

I assume by the time I get home this afternoon we will have yet more news.

My son said to me one day that this is like watching a real-life tom Clancy novel, and I think I agree.

All of you have a great morning! I am cheerful because by Monday we will be in the 30's! Yay!

Captain Hate

Keith X sounds like a perfect representative of a place where a Somali cop and his worthless partner haven't been charged for murdering an unarmed Australian woman and are still being paid.

"Taken care of me. Mike, you’re my kid brother, and you take care of me? Did you ever think of that. Ever once? Send Fredo off to do this, send Fredo to take care of that… take care of some little unimportant night club here, and there; pick somebody up at the airport. I’m your older brother Mike and I was stepped over! … It ain’t the way I wanted it! I can handle things. I’m smart. Not like everybody says, like dumb. I’m smart and I want respect!"

Gentlejim

I'm still behind here, but thanks to all of you for your thoughts and prayers.

I've had the honor of meeting two JOMers in person, daddy and Miss Marple. Your responses to my request reaffirm my desire to meet many more. Outstanding people here.

So true, Iggy.

Rush Limbaugh's revenge.

The Infamous Ignatz

Let's try a little thought experiment.
Let's say Trump had turned out far more lefty than he ran and was essentially Barry's third term, but otherwise was unchanged. He still tweeted out his stuff only aimed mostly at different, conservative targets.

I'm not sure how our side would react, except to decry another RINO betrayal.

But I'm certain all these blubbering progs wondering about his mental fitness and intoning sonorously in their best Sam the Eagle voice about the 'dignity of the office' would be extolling the virtues of a smart and sassy new kind of edgy president with that brash Queens moxy who totally gets social media unlike those stodgy conservatives.

The nevertrumper GOPes would...ah, who cares what those shitbirds would be doing?

Jack is Back!

All those sealed indictments and visits to Gitmo?

I am going out on a different limb and think it might be MS-13. Most of them are not American citizens and wouldn't take much for the Trump administration to declare them a terrorist organization, especially a domestic terrorist organization.

We have a huge contingent in Long Island, specifically in the Brentwood area about 40 miles from me. Had one of them sexually assault a young women in Southampton, not more than 3 blocks from me. They are a dangerous menance and will kill rather than just beat you with baseball bats. Actually, they beat you up with a bat then kill you with a shot to the back of what is left of your head.

I would love to speculate that this is some kind of reversal of a silent coup but I can't - yet.

Rocco

Good Morning, As more and more Clinton corruption finally surfaces, I hope and resign to rub every NeverTrumpers nose in the pile of crap that those cowards passively endorsed. I HATE them!

DebinGA

Previous page link re DOJ 9000 sealed indictments included a retired undercover agent, whose career sounds like Donnie Brasco's, speculating the indictments were human trafficking related. Shocked to find that CA, TX, and GA are chief hubs. Atlanta International Airport and booming convention business explains GA I guess. BOzo's blind eye to border control explains CA/TX.

Old Lurker

I'm with Jack in speculating the Gitmo thing is unrelated to the coup. Most likely gangs or drugs.

DebinGA

Gangs and drugs go hand in hand with human trafficking. Americans won't put up with kidnappings and enslavements.

Rocco

I think both Deb and Jack are right, South American gang members involved in human trafficking among other crimes.

derwill

I agree with OL and Jack. For one thing, putting one's political enemies--even ones that plotted a coup--into Gitmo would be horrible optics. It would give credence to the Trump is Literally Hitler idiocy.

I think it could be the MS-13 gangs, but even more likely human traffickers--especially if many of the charges involve abuse of children or teenagers, which they inevitably will. And, of course, the two could well overlap.

derwill

Hey, for once we're all in agreement here. :-)

h/t BJG, thoughts on Trump foreign policy
https://www.strategic-culture.org/news/2018/01/02/trump-cuts-gordian-knot-foreign-entanglements.html
We start with four remarks Trump often made while campaigning. Everyone would be better off had President Bush taken a day at the beach rather than invade Iraq. The "six trillion dollars" spent in the Middle East would have been better spent on infrastructure in the USA. NATO is obsolete and the USA pays a disproportionate share. It would better to get along with Russia than not.

To the neocon and humanitarian intervention crowd, who have been driving US foreign policy for most of the century, these four points, when properly understood (as, at some level, they do understand them), are a fatal challenge. Trump is saying that

1) the post 911 military interventions did nothing for the country's security;
2) foreign interventions impoverish the country;
3) the alliance system is neither useful nor a good deal for the country;
4) Russia is not the once and future enemy.

JimNorCal

Consider the famous story of the Gordian Knot: rather than trying to untie the fabulously complicated knot, Alexander drew his sword and cut it. How can Trump cut The Gordian Knot of American imperial entanglements?

By getting others to untie it.

He walks out of the Paris Agreement ("a watershed moment when it comes to debating America’s role in the world"). And the TPP ("opened the door toward greater Chinese influence, and won’t benefit the U.S. economy in the slightest"). His blustering on Iran caused the German Foreign Minister to express doubts about American leadership. He brusquely tells NATO allies to pay their own way ("America’s NATO allies may be on their own after November if Russia attacks them"). By announcing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel he unites practically everybody against Washington and then uses that excuse to cut money to the UN. His trash talk on North Korea has actually started the first debate about the utility of military force we've seen for fifteen years. He pulls out of Syria (quietly and too slowly but watch what he doesn't talk about). One last try in Afghanistan and then out. Re-negotiate all the trade deals to US benefit or walk away. Be disrespectful of all sorts of conventions and do your best to alienate allies so they start to cut the ties themselves (his tweet on the UK was especially effective). Attack the media which is part of the machinery of entanglement. Confiscate assets. It's a species of tough love – rudely and brusquely delivered.

JimNorCal

A prediction on DACA, along with stern tho gentle criticism of Ann Coulter.

http://donsurber.blogspot.com/2018/01/trump-just-won-on-daca.html
Trump figured out how to grant amnesty to 800,000 people he cannot easily deport and get all the rest he wants. That's the deal. Democrats will high-five and exclaim how they won -- while the wall goes up, the barrios are cleansed of illegals, and chain migration ends.
If he does not get that, he walks away, and Democrats have to face their supporters who are watching a wall go up and illegals deported.

derwill

Jim, that goes along with Scott Adams's post about how Trump is changing the world by doing things that we once imagined were impossible.

http://blog.dilbert.com/2018/01/02/president-trump-changed-imagination/

JimNorCal

Thanks, Porch. Those observations are from the article, of course. I'm not positive that Trump is that anti-interventionist, time will tell. But there's a solid chance it's a correct view.

Now to figure out if it's a good policy overall. Encouraging self reliance by other nations can't be bad. But leading and helping is not always wrong.

Davod

"4) Russia is not the once and future enemy."

Tell that to the Russians.

Captain Hate

I'm with Rocco. I used to consider Kristol and Hayes to be smart people whose interests and goals dovetailed with mine. After a year of watching their op eds become frenzied bouts of lunacy laced with casuistry, it's time to just admit that those snotty bitches were never on my side. Live and learn.

Captain Hate

Surber gives the best description of Coulter I've seen:

Ann Coulter is smart but not wise. She thinks deeply about the superficial, and is superficially about the deep.

Her prediction in 2015 that Trump would become the next president was just to get a laugh on the Bill Maher show. Some conservatives seek to please liberals. She seeks to outrage them.

But she also sees the history of Republicans being lousy negotiators, so her alarm is not without foundation. People act in logical ways, and once you understand where they are coming from, you better appreciate their struggle.

Tell that to the Russians.

Russians fear us because we are powerful and they are, frankly, paranoid. But they have MANY problems and challenges so if they could get past the paranoia and see the US as the puppy dog we actually are, they would breathe a sigh of relief. Well, that's my opinion.

But Hayes did surprise me because I did not think him capable of such lunacy. Fooled me.

I think I read Iggy's comment wrong. A US citizen in the US wouldn't get sent there, but an illegal could be especially if an agreement was made to send back a large number and it was used as a processing station (much like what the Clinton Adminsitration did with Haitian illegals captured trying to make it to Florida).

JimNorCal

Probably already posted? But fun.

This photo is a screenshot from Oprah’s 1988 interview with Trump. She asked him if he would ever run for president of the United States, to which he said probably not. “I do get tired of seeing the country ripped off,” he said. “If it got so bad I would never want to rule it out totally.” Donald also said that he’d win if he ever chose to run.

derwill

The Left points to the look on Trump's face when he was declared the winner on election night as proof that he didn't really want to win.

But, for me, it was that look on his face that night that convinced me that he really might turn out to be a good president. Because I didn't see shock or surprise on his face--I saw gravity. It was the look of a man who had a thorough appreciation of the enormity of the task that he had been entrusted with. It wasn't the simple joy of "I won" but rather the more complex emotion, of "I won because of promises that I made, and now I must make good on those promises--no matter how difficult the task turns out to be, or what it might cost me."

The only times I was sure what I saw in a picture, was that Obama is gay; John Kerry is an asshole; and Hillary is a screaming bitch.

JimNorCal

Porch, I've been meaning to say that I read through the second half of the Patrick O'Brian series (Aubrey/Maturin) in order from Wine Dark Sea to the end over the summer.

While I still love the books, I was startled to see SJW attitudes and themes gradually take ascendance. I hadn't noticed it in previous readings ... though I'm not sure I've read such a large chunk in order before. The plotting, writing, character development, scholarship, philosophical asides and so on still dazzle. But I've always admired the books for their quiet admiration of the "deplorable" common seamen and their strong culture and character. Even if primitive to us, that inner strength carried them through many difficult times, including facing problems they could not overcome with courage instead of despair. O'Brian's implicit faith in the deeper well springs of our heritage seems to me to dissipate in the later books. Sad.

sbw

typo: MSM psychoanalysis s/b psickoanalysis

sbw

JimNorCal, what always struck me about the Aubrey/Maturin books was the complexity of government poisoned further by venal and petty bureaucracy.

It helped me realize that blaming modern problems on increased complexity is ignorant obfuscation.

People misbehaving has always been a problem never addressed by education.

Character. Try it. You’ll like it.

lyle

Careful, OL. Such intemperate descriptions gets you really close to lyle territory. 👊

Old Lurker

SBW 1:39. Yes indeed. Candy though they may be, the hundreds and hundreds of Historical Novels I have digested covering times from say Caesar through say Waterloo, and from the Vikings and the Khans through the churches and the monarchs have convinced me that human nature has been constant for most of recorded history. NOTHING about modern times and troubles changes that.

Which or course is why reading and history and basic economics is so important...but we here all know that. And so does the Left which is why they want the opposite.

Old Lurker

But Lyle, I though truth was the certain defense against libel?

sbw

And so does the Left which is why they want the opposite

Yeah, the left treats history as a cook book.

Jack is Back!

As I understand it, Iamanidiot was arrested for formenting violence against the protestors. He was critical of the police not using capital force on the protest movement and was whipping up a frenzy among the Iranian thugs.

Old Lurker

Cook book for sure.

But also denying the masses access to history reminds me of priests hiding the nature of man's relationship to God behind Latin and screens and raised parts of the cathedral not open to the people. High priests in all cultures have done that.

Humans always seem to want to control other humans.

You’ve Got Fail: Investigation into Online Gun Sales Backfires on Gun Controllers

In yet another embarrassment for the gun control lobby, a government investigation of online gun sales designed to determine “whether private sellers would knowingly sell a firearm to an individual prohibited from possessing one” determined that … no, actually, they would not. In 72 attempts undertaken over 2 ½ years, undercover agents trying to buy guns through readily-accessible Internet sites failed exactly 100% of the time to complete a sale when the seller had reason to believe the buyer was prohibited or lived in another state.

Reuters reports that “the law requires social media sites to delete or block obviously criminal content within 24 hours” and “can impose fines of up to 50 million euros ($60 million) on sites that fail to remove hate speech promptly.” The “far-right” Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has been the first on the receiving end of the new policy.
