Trump did well in a very unusual televised meeting with Congressional leaders on immigration. Naturally the Times is unpleasantly surprised:
In effect, the president and his visitors threw away the blah-blah scripts and negotiated possible legislation in front of the nation. “I hope we’ve given you enough material,” a pleased Mr. Trump joked with reporters as he finally ushered them out of the Cabinet Room in the White House.
That was the point. After days in which his very fitness for office was debated, Mr. Trump appeared intent on demonstrating that he could handle the presidency. He was in command of the meeting while inviting input. He did not berate anyone. He did not call anyone derogatory nicknames. He signaled that he was open to compromise.
The bar, of course, was historically low given that Democrats and even some Republicans have been describing him as so unstable that he should be removed from office. For his advisers, the meeting was a relief, a chance to reset the narrative and make Mr. Trump look more like a traditional president. And his critics, grading on a curve, called it a welcome change, a moment of constructive engagement that they hoped would lead to more.
Yet it was a measure of Mr. Trump’s political weakness that anyone seemed surprised.
Hmm. Trump's political weakness? Perhaps it was a measure of the insanity of the opposition that they needed reassurance that Trump was not drooling on himself, and that a long-time businessman, real estate developer and Reality TV star could lead a meeting. On television!

Jane,
I didn't want a traditional president, because that would mean things would go on as before.
As far as earmarks, I need to see more about his thinking on this. I am just not sure.
Posted by: Miss Marple the Deplorable | January 10, 2018 at 01:54 PM
Earmarks? Trump basically told them they were too corrupt to act in the national interest, so maybe bribing each other is the way to go. I like the way he snuck in "more controls this time." That short circuits the backdoor attempts by Ryan to return to the bad old days of earmarks (which he was doing behind closed doors).
Posted by: henry | January 10, 2018 at 01:55 PM
What caught me about the conversation about earmarks is that Trump pointed out, since they banned earmarks the parties have never ever been willing to compromise on anything. And he suggested that they bring them back so they can get some stuff done.
I thought that was fascinating because it has never once crossed my mind that was a/the problem. I'd love to know the thinking behind it.

Doesn't that mean that is they didn't take the dossier to the FISA court to get a warrant, then there was no warrant at all?
Or does it mean they used something else? What else could it have been?

Jane's 1:52 on Huma/cannot be forced to testify, etc..is spot on.
Also, it's why questionable federal employees like Ohr, Page, Strozk are demoted, not fired...to sustain their benefits..they must co-operate with interagency investigations.
Andy Mc Cabe can't just ride, and retire.
Unless, they quit and relinquish their rights...after Soros pays their passage on a slow boat to China!!
My idea to organize against amnesty shills is , as usual, at the end of the last thread! Now, we need to lobby for legislation for term limits and benefit denials for all federal, state employees that usurp laws or violate oath of office--they forfeit tax-payer subsistence, immediately.
Accountability Now ! Install cameras in every upper management office..require recordings with every lobbyist, foreign or domestic.
Oh, no...they do that already, amirite? Obama? Brennan? Bueller? Lauer?

BTW a little googling suggests that some spousal privilege does survive a divorce in some states and with some exceptions so I think the idea of staying married just in case makes sense for both of them.
Posted by: Old Lurker | January 10, 2018 at 02:42 PM
The use of spouses and/or girlfriends as conduits for information and payoffs has got to be looked at. I am sure this goes on in GOP circles as well.
This is one of the problems women entering the professional workforce has caused, although unintentionally.
There needs to be a look at these business/government relationships. Years ago, when I married my mining engineer husband, I couldn't continute to work for the company and I couldn't work for the state; the former due to a nepotism clause and the latter due to conflict of interest.
I stayed home and raised my kids and then went into office work and substitute teaching. I guess no equal rights allow these situations to exist, but as we can see it's a handy way to launder a bribe.

Sundance makes my head spin, so I can't vouch for my takeaways. One of those is that Adm Rogers came in as NSA Dir. and was alarmed at rampart misuse of Section 702 "about queries" to collect any and all communications (cell/email/other) of any target, including Team Trump. Rogers ordered an audit, but before the audit was completed an alerted BOzo NSD Dir John Carlin filed a mea culpa with the court admitting the agency had spied on Americans illegally since 2010 - then Carlin immediately resigned. If that's true, no need for FISAs as the private info was illegally coming in the back door.

EILAT, Israel — The founders of the controversial opposition research firm Fusion GPS admitted that they helped the researcher hired to compile the infamous, largely discredited 35-page dossier on President Donald Trump to share the document with Sen. John McCain.
The goal of providing the dossier to McCain, the Fusion GPS founders explained, was to pass the information contained in the questionable document to the U.S. intelligence community under the Obama administration.
The disclosure raises questions about whether McCain knew that the information he delivered to the intelligence community was actually an opposition document reportedly funded by the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
Last December, it was revealed that it was McCain who notoriously passed the controversial dossier documents produced by the Washington opposition research firm Fusion GPS to then FBI Director James Comey, whose agency reportedly utilized the dossier as a basis for its probe into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

I know its offensive but perhaps you should tell that to the Washington, DC local of the Laborers International.

Trump at the presser on meeting with Mueller: My transcript:
Reporter John Roberts ...Sarah brought up the Russia Investigation...Your legal team believes in a few weeks Mueller will ask for an interview with you...Are you open to meeting with him? Would you bewailing to met with him without condition, or would you demand that a strict set of parameters be placed around any encounter between you and the Special Counsel.
Trump: Well again John, there has been no collusion between The Trump Campaign and Russians or Trump and Russians. No Collusion. When I watch you interviewing all the people leaving their committees, I mean the Democrats are all running for office and they are trying to say this and that but bottom line is they all say there is no collusion. And there is no collusion. When you talk about interviews, Hillary Clinton had an interview, where she wasn't sworn in, she wasn't given the Oath, they didn't take notes, they didn't record it, and it was done on the Fourth of July weekend. That's perhaps ridiculous. And a lot of people look upon that as being a very serious breach, and it really was. But again, and I'll speak to Attorneys. I can only say this, there was absolutely no collusion. Everybody knows it. Every Committee. I've been in Office now for 11 months. For 11 months they've had this phony cloud over our Administration, over our Government. And it has hurt our Government. It has hurt our Government. It's a Democrat hoax. It was brought up as an excuse for losing an Election that frankly the Democrats shud have won because they have such a tremendous advantage in the Electoral College. It was brought up for that reason. But it has been determined that there is no collusion by virtually everybody. We'll see what happens. We'll see what happens. I mean certainly I'll see what happens but when they have no collusion, and nobody's found any collusion, at any level, it seems unlikely that you'd even have an interview.

McCain was a conduit, albeit willingly. Fusion didn't want Hillary's fingerprints all over the dossier, and so her good friend Johnny Mac did the deed. If he was ever caught with the file and hadn't turned it over he would have been double special denounced by every foghorn on the Left. I guess you could call it a Weiner-Weiner solution.
Let's discuss how the unmasking fits in with the FBI's byzantine backstabbing. If you trace all of the players; Hillary, Comey, Strzok, Powers, Rice, Page, Brennan et al, there is no way in hell all of this was going on without some orchestration and the knowledge of the president.

Trump pointed out, since they banned earmarks the parties have never ever been willing to compromise on anything.
I don't necessarily mind compromise among Republicans (as with the tax plan), but compromising with Dems never seems to work out, or it works like this: Dems want to spend 150, Repubs want to spend 100, so they "compromise" on 175 (once all the earmarks are thrown in).

Mrs. Buckeye has been suffering with a rotator cuff problem. She just got back from her first PT session. Laying on the floor with a broomstick she has to raise over her head.
Dog thinks 1) this is new game we haven't played before!, and 2) it is all about me!
Think he is going to spend some time in the crate:)

MM,
Thanks for that. I have know found out why he is going there but will keep it inside. All I know from what happened, lucky kid. No wonder they are shamed and reluctant to talk about it.
Kids and you need to make sure they are always doing good. Another example, from what I am hearing, of the seduction of the internet and peer pressure.

Every now and again--when "reporting" on an event hat appeared on national television (lotta eyeballs there who can either believe the Times or their own lying eyes) the NYT "journalists" are forced to pull their heads out of a deep dark place where the sun never shines. And when they do, they get an unpleasant surprise. The world is different out there in the sunshine.
But hey that's okay. They can soon go back and put their collective heads where they usually are.

Checking in from south of the Antarctic Circle. Am I missing anything?
Another Bob,
That's a hell of a long way to go to celebrate Caro's Birthday, or are you down there for some other reason?
