This Cy Young was no relation to the great pitcher. Instead, he was a big strong farm boy who won gold at the 1952 Olympics. A teammate took silver but the best American result since then was a bronze in the 1972 Munich games by William Schmidt.

FWIW, the late Mr. Young may remain the only American to win javelin gold for a long time. First of all, big high school kids with big arms are pushed to play quarterback and/or baseball. Secondly, a majority of states ban high school javelin competitions - something about erratically thrown spears flying several hundred feet while distracted teenagers mill about doing other things at a track and field meet. Go figure.
