Not to beat the train thing to death but:

"The average freight train is about 1 to 1¼ miles in length (90 to 120 rail cars). When it's moving at 55 miles an hour, it can take a mile or more to stop after the locomotive engineer fully applies the emergency brake. An 8-car passenger train moving at 80 miles an hour needs about a mile to stop."

Minnesota Safety Council was the source and sounds about right.

Having spent 100s of hours in railroad owned vehicles with the VHF communication radio blaring, including the very territory where the accident happened, I will offer the following:

An engineer running a train almost never gets instructions via radio to slow down, speed up, or make an emergency stop. That is what the signal lights along the right-of-way are for, and I would have a hard time believing the engineer would give much credence to some dude popping up on the radio telling him to make an emergency stop, even if it had been discussed in advance.

Almost all the chatter is associated with work crews requesting access to a particular chunk of track for a specific chunk of time, and having a dispatcher approve or deny the request and then a very formal process to "lock in" the permitted activity and make sure a train doesn't run over the guys.

It is nothing like air traffic control. And in West by God, they sure don't use standardized phrases on the radio:)

Porchlight

anonamom, I like vrbo and AirBnB too. Although AirBnB has gone full SJW. I do like the anonymity of hotels. The little coffee machines in most of them do an adequate job. Not great, but good enough to get me to my first real cup.

Outside of Rudy G., who are some of the other "white hats"? Sheriff Clarke in Milwaukee, Alan West, Scott Pruitt (move him into FBI from EPA), Arpaio way to old. Any others?

And it there ever was a POTUS who needs loyalty and "white hats" its Trump.

jimmyk

I share Dave (in MA)'s fear that the memo will prove to be Al Capone's vault. I think that's unlikely in reality, but the MFM will certainly depict it as such. That is, after all, how they depicted Hillary's criminal treatment of her e-mails. How to make the memo actually get treated as serious is maybe a bigger issue than whether it gets released.

In other words, faster than you can blink an eye, the MFM will go from "OMG! Trump is being completely irresponsible for releasing the memo against FBI recommendations! This is obstruction!" to, if the memo is released, "The memo is no big deal. Time to move on to the important matter of impeaching Trump."

Threadkiller

Apparently it is part of the script, Tom.

Jim Eagle

buckeye,

Correcto mundo regarding trains, speed and distance for stopping. But I think this train was different in a lot of ways. Would not surprise me that the Capitol Police had someone in the engine cab. All the crossings were blocked and manned by State Police, except this one for some reason. Capitol Police were on board and in the passenger cars.

The Scalice shooting has changed everything in Congressional security. But there is a lot missing in this accident especially on the security side. You can bet ISIS is smiling.

Porchlight

but the MFM will certainly depict it as such.

Sure. It wouldn't matter what was in it - that would be the spin.

I'm assuming it will be the first step in a sequence that includes important firings/resignations and investigations.

In other words, concrete evidence that can be acted upon (as opposed to speculation that couldn't).

Old Lurker

Lyle, I think most of us need less than one line to spot most of us. Especially since I have KillFiled all the one's I really dislike.

Rocco

Just an FYI concerning VHF radio protocol on the water. When using the radio you should always start your transmission with, This is...(boat's name) and end with Over. The word over tells the person you're speaking to that you expect a response. When you want to end your conversation, you end with the word Out. Out means you don't expect a reply. So you'd never hear over and out to end a transmission.

(I didn't know VHF could be used on land)

Tom R

Speaking for myself only, I can spot Duda's drivel within a few words and SOB.

TomR, TK, the presumption is Wray has recommended Trump not declassify/release, and Trump overrules. Wray is supposed to resign due to having lost the confidence of the boss.

Wray seems to want to play both sides, and is of the previous regime, so I don’t see it as a big loss. A replacement would get politically complicated since the dems would refuse to vote for anyone reasonable.

John Doe contempt hearing in progress in Green Bay. Some tweeting from MacIver is fun.

Asked if he had any comment on the abusive John Doe investigation he launched against conservatives in 2012, Milwaukee County DA John "Doe" Chisholm told @MacIverWisc "No, do you?" This reporter said, "Yes."

Old Lurker

"A replacement would get politically complicated since the dems would refuse to vote for anyone reasonable."

At which point Trump says "I got you 5.7% growth, 3.0 Unemployment, a huge tax cut, a gutting of OCare...all in one year without a single vote from Democrat Criminals and Enablers. If there was ever a time for the Senate to stick with the Constitution and abandon "rule" from another time when a presumption of patriotism was fair, it would be this instance when we have no trust left to preserve and we must begin building it anew from this moment. We need these White Hats and we need them yesterday. 52 R's can put them to work."

I don't believe much of anything, anonamom. RG suggested that Wray is operating under a script crafted by, or at least to the benefit of, Trump. I don't see it even though I have been informed that it is obvious.

More John Doe hearing:

Asked if he had any comment on the John Doe proceedings today, Milwaukee County Assistant DA David Robles, told @MacIverWisc - "No, I'm not talking to you. You're not a member of the press." This reporter replied, "Yes, I am. And here I am."

I used to fly attack helicopters in the 80,s

We had VHF,UHF and FM radios, so we had coms with about anyone with a radio.

If we were doing convoy ops we always had coms with the ground vehicles. I think it would be odd not to have coms with someone on the train, and I think preferably someone in the engine car.

If you are guarding the train it makes no sense to not be able to talk to the one person able to stop, speed up or slow down the train. Even if it would not have helped in this situation.

Ways to #ReleaseTheMemo
Some suggestions on how-to:

*Anonymously leak to the press like the FBI
*Give it to Comey's friend, Daniel Richman, to leak to the press
*Send it to Hillary Clinton's maid to print out
*Send it to Anthony Weiner's laptop
*Send it to the DNC servers & have the Awans retrieve it for us
*Put it on an unsecure email system with the password 'password' & go phishing for it

Still would love to visit someday.

Old Lurker

Good Byron York, Clarice.

But you and I both know the cabal (don't forget Clapper, Brennan, CIA, NSA et al) was tapping all things Trump (and you don't think the others too?) long before they applied for FISA cover and using Page as the entry point for cover. They were certain Hillary would win and would be grateful for all they did for her. Then as summer 2016 came around somebody thought they should punk the FISA Court to get paper cover just in case even though they still knew Hillary would win.

Hate it when that happens.
