That picture of Mooch looks like she told the person she paid to do it that the check would bounce unless he made her look much thinner than she is. Although she isn't nearly as gorgeous as the MFM propagandized she isn't unattractive on the rare moment when she's pleasant.
Posted by: Captain Hate | February 12, 2018 at 11:04 AM
Seeeriously, I am way underwhelmed by those portraits.
Michelle's doeson't look like her plus it is pale and colorless, with no background.
Obama's seated in the middle of a bush, which has the same leaves on every branch but a variety of flowers attached to it. Also, his hands look too large and he has that prissy look on his face.
Well, as far as I am concerned, bad paintings both.

What do you expect from the young royals? Their father was the Brit version of the JEF and this was their whore mother:
Diana was not a particularly bright student. She was educated at home till the age of 9, went to boarding school Riddlesworth Hall in Norfolk (age 9-12), and to the exclusive West Health Girls' School in Kent (age 12-16), where she was regarded as a poor student. She failed all of her O-levels twice and later dropped out at the age of 16. She would pack her bags and try Institut Alpin Videmanette, a finishing school in Switzerland, but also quit after a term. It was about this time when she first met Prince Charles, who was at that time dating her eldest sister, Lady Sarah.
That gold digging dumbass turned a large portion of the world into maudlin weepers.

Mao's wife was Jiang Qing, one of the Gang of Four (not the band). Nasty piece of work.
The Barack painting was done by a trendy African American artist who has an almost Renaissance portrayal of the individual and then throws in the hobo stuff as background. I'm going to say that both portraits will go into storage or be mocked by later generations if they do continue to hang them. It's like having Jeff Koons or Murakami do a portrait. Quatsch.

I didn't follow the Porter thing because I knew he'd be lynched regardless of whether he was guilty or innocent, but...
Twisted: Trump says Porter sick, guilty; defends him publicly
That is just blind stupidity. Why would it impact his view on due process? What don't people understand about the concept of innocent until proven guilty? Our entire legal system has been based on it for centuries.
I believe he's probably guilty, too. That doesn't make him actually guilty.
With the extermination of free speech, the protections against illegal search and seizure, and now due process, we're losing the society that was rooted in the constitution and the rule of law. And it's happening very quickly.

Posted by: narciso | February 12, 2018 at 01:17 PM
Restraining orders are not findings or evidence of guilt. Judges sign them like they're giving out their autographs. Most times the recipient isn't even aware of it until he's served with it and finds out he's not allowed to see his kids or go back to his own house.
If Porter wasn't convicted of assault and battery, he's innocent until proven guilty. I'd defend him, too, if I were Trump. He's simply defending a constitutional right.
Why wasn't he tried for these alleged crimes, btw? Anyone know?

Appalled, one area in which the division is dramatic is with respect to hate speech. In the Atlantic article you linked it is stated that:
Supporting a hate speech exception to the First Amendment is not a compromise, it is a surrender. The idea behind preventing governments from suppressing speech is that governments will invariably use reasonable sounding exceptions to stifle political views inconvenient to the government. We see this happening now on college campuses, where certain good faith political views (such as that what affirmative action has morphed into, identity quotas, hurts all groups) are in danger of being banned as hate speech.
As far as abortion goes, keep in mind that SCOTUS in Roe, Doe and Casey has acted as a super-legislatures (in their more honest moments, abortion supporters such as Tribe and Justice Ginsberg have recognized this). Perhaps a good place to start the compromise process would be to urge judges to act like judges, not philosopher kings and queens.

I will take your point on hate speech. It's not a concept recognized by the drafters of the 1st Amendment, who lived in an age when plenty of speech was hateful.
But I think politics becomes less of an unending primal scream, and actually something effective when you look for similarities and points of agreement, and act on that. The tribal thing that politics has become over the last 10 years creates a corrupt politics, and a by any means necessary politics that looks more like South American "republics" than anything that's stable or sustainable.
