Writing in Politico Dr. Mark L. Rosenberg, who "is president emeritus of the Task Force for Global Health in Decatur, and was the founding director of CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control" tells us where the gun debate has gone awry:
What’s Missing From the Gun Debate
It’s simple: Science.
He goes on to deplore the lack of funding for basic research into effective means of reducing gun violence but of course, the lack of funding is a symptom rather than a cause. What is missing from the debate is not science, it is trust.
Conservatives believe, on some evidence, that the social sciences have become yet another bastion for academic progressives. Consequently right-wingers believe that agenda-driven progressives will engage in agenda-driven statistical jiggery-pokery, produce papers peer-reviewed by other progressives, and come away "proving" the efficacy of the progressive agenda item du jour.
Is that distrust misplaced? Maybe! NY Times columnist and reliable lefty Nick Kristof seems to have figured out that the "assault weapons ban" is a joke. And Leah Libresco surprised herself and (I suspect) her WaPo and/or 538 editors with a piece titled
I used to think gun control was the answer. My research told me otherwise.
So maybe there are progressives willing to break with their team on some gun-related issues. On the other hand, Mike Bloomberg's "Everytown" isn't even aiming for credibility [CNBC list] with their "Schools Shootings" count and don't get me started on the NY Times editors (OK, one).
Closer to home, author Dr. Rosenberg engages in a bit of, hmm, card-palming himself. Stay with me through some snippets, and I bet you'll guess where I am going:
Where does that leave us? The exact causes of America’s rise in mass shootings—and the best ways to prevent such violence—remain uncertain all these years after Columbine. Should we focus our efforts on mental health? Would a ban on semi-automatic rifles necessarily solve the problem? What if the surest bet is for schools to install metal detectors in their halls?
...
Common sense doesn’t tell us whether a ban on semi-automatic rifles will reduce mass shootings—that question is too complicated for us to simply work out in our heads. But it’s possible a well-designed study could, and would in turn build public trust in any resulting legislation.
...
And we don’t know whether banning the sale of semi-automatic rifles will prevent mass shootings or lead to more gun deaths because there will be fewer good guys with a gun to stop the bad guys with guns. To answer the question, we also have to measure the degree to which each intervention infringes on the rights of law-abiding gun owners. Only rigorous, objective and well-designed scientific research can find the answer.
...
When we ask lawmakers to make decisions without data—measures like campus carry, universal background checks, identifying individuals at high risk for violence or bans on semi-automatic rifles—we are pushing them to approve the equivalent of thalidomide for gun violence.
Four mentions of semi-automatic rifles. Mentions of "assault weapons"? Zero. And why is that?
I'm watching Tucker where Cleta Mitchell, a Campaign Finance Law Expert, tells us that the total money spent by the Russians on Facebook to sway the 2016 Election was $46,000, while Hillary and Trump spent $81 Million combined.
If I recall correctly, Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor spent $168,000 (4 times what the Ruskie's spent,) just at Steak Houses during his losing Re-Election campaign to challenger Rep Dave Bratz.
I recall correctly!
According to FEC campaign finance data, Cantor's campaign spent $168,637 in 17 payments to both Bobby Van's Steak House and BLT Steak up until May 21.

From Narciso's Red Sparrow Spy Thriller link at 08:32:
The reviews are mixed for Jennifer Lawrence’s new spy thriller.
The reviews are in for the Jennifer Lawrence-led spy thriller Red Sparrow, and the consensus is that the movie is more style than substance.
...Red Sparrow centers on a Russian spy trained to use seduction to gain information...
I blame Central casting. Why use Jennifer Lawrence?

...when they could have used the real deal?
Does anybody in Hollywood think outside the box anymore, or is it just me?

daddy,
It is obvious to me that the Russkis have figured out the way to an American male's heart, while Hollywood has lost its way.
My sister was telling me about a great biography she has been reading about Douglas Fairbanks, who apparently was the biggest force in creating the silent movie industry in America.
Here is a review of the book, which is titled "The First King of Hollywood: The Life of Douglas Fairbanks" and written by Tracy Goessel.
She said she learned a whole bunch about early Hollywood and silent films. For example, Mary Pickford played children until she was 39! She was a tiny woman, and had mastered how children move (my sister discovered this looking up her work on YouTube).
It's a big book, so maybe one you should check out when you have long flight segments, as it runs around 800 pages.

--LaVoy Finicum would agree. The FBI agents lied about trying to assassinate him and it was the cell phone video from the car that proved that the Feds weren't planning on taking prisoners.--
Nonsensical and false.
One FBI agent lied about firing two shots when everyone was still in the truck. He is being prosecuted by the DOJ for that lie.
If the Feds planned on taking no prisoners how exactly did those in Finicum's truck survive?
If the Feds planned on taking no prisoners were they also going to assassinate the Oregon State Troopers to eliminate the witnesses? Of course it was the Oregon Sate Troopers who actually actually confronted Finicum and who shot and killed him, but that doesn't fit the narrative does it?

Occupy, Ferguson riots, BLM sitting on highways, activists vandalizing bldgs over phony rape stories, Dakota pipeline protest camps,...
Those protesters could come & go & do what they wanted.
But some protest out in rural Oregon has to be stopped? It didn't make sense.

daddy,
It is obvious to me that the Russkis have figured out the way to an American male's heart, while Hollywood has lost its way.
Miss Marple,
I think back before you showed up here we used to do layovers in Kazakstan which I really enjoyed. I recall posting here how one day upon arriving at their Customs window there was this absolutely stunning Russian gal in uniform looking at my stuff and she was smiling like crazy at me, and I had to keep turning around to see if she was giving the eye to somebody other than myself but there was nobody behind me so she was doing the come on to me:)
It was so flattering and fun and made no sense at all. I recalled that that was the moment I knew Kazakstan was a 3rd World Country because the only time I am ever gazed upon as a catch by gorgeous gals is if I am in a 3rd World Country like The Philippines or Thailand, or some low rent bar in HongKong or Itaewan. It was odd to be gazed upon by an ethnic Caucasian, since pretty much in the rest of the Euro-world I am invisible to everyone except for their Filipino barmaids:)
At Kilroy's I think I'm probably no more than a 3 at best at closing time:)

At the gym doing catchup from the previous thread and just got to Tom Lifson's Am Thinker story with the hat tip to MM and Clarice about the Top ICE Attorney in the Northwest pleading guilty to massive identity fraud of the Illegals he was supposed to be catching and deporting: Obama appointee to senior ICE post pleads guilty
Raphael A. Sanchez has switched roles in the chronicle of Obama administration appointments. No longer an ornament on the Obama diversity Christmas tree as a Hispanic senior legal official, the top attorney for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Seattle has pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.
Here's what gets me:
Sanchez used his home address to receive the goods obtained by fraud, an incredibly stupid move for a purported legal expert. That, of course, was no obstacle to an appointment in the Obama administration, as long as diversity points were available (or if political loyalty was assured).
Interestingly, none of the few media reports on this case includes a picture of Sanchez, and I have been unable to find one, which is rare for senior appointees in the federal government. I don't know what to make of that.
What I make of it, and I'm going out on a limb here, is that Mr Sanchez is himself an illegal operating under a stolen identity, and publishing his photo might alert individuals who know his true identity.
The reason I say that is that about 7 years back one of our top Anchorage Policemen, hispanic name, was discovered to be an illegal alien having stolen some guys identity from Texas. He had been on our force for about a decade but was caught IIRC when his current wife submitted his SSN into some databank in order to get him a Passport so they could travel out of country and that alerted the Feds who came in and hauled him away, and our local Police Chief was caught stammering that he had passed all the requisite background checks etc.
So that said, I submit that this Obama appointed Top ICE Attorney who apparently doesnt know shit about Legal stuff is an illegal alien at worst and an identity thief at second worse, and if he happens to be a US citizen he is the type who simply forged his Law School Paperwork in pursuit of his happy gig under Obama at which he was suprememly unqualified whatever his true identity. His picture ought to be on every milk carton in America---"Have You Seen This Criminal?"
Posted by: daddy on iPad | February 19, 2018 at 11:15 PM

The FDR internment order was indeed horrible. What’s worse is that a portion of the order was upheld by the SC in Korematsu v. United States. Has this been posted?
David Hogg can't remember his lines when interviewed.
He is the son of an FBI agent and has apparently been all over the MSM (haven't seen him as I don't watch any of that drivel) concerning the Fla. school shooting.
He appears coached, confused, and ...well watch and see what you think.

Dennis Prager had a good segment today on how pushing these students to quickly turn this into a political opportunity is dangerous and unhealthy for them.

Is it POSSIBLE. that MUELLER, himself a former FBI DIRECTOR, could become AWARE of the STEELE DOSSIER, and RODHAMS payments for it and RODHAMS'S complicity in it, and the use of a COMPLETELY DISHONEST sleazy scummy to ALTER the OUTCOME of an AMERICAN ELECTION, and not take ACTION AGAINST the OBVIOUS CRIMINAL CABAL......RODHAM, PODESTA, et al?????

Thanks for all the kind words.

God bless you Dave, and God bless and keep your Father.

One of the perceptive althousers noticed Tim burns (raving Looney candidate) tomorrow was a,partner at Perkins and coie, as they say discuss.
Posted by: narciso | February 20, 2018 at 12:00 AM
Momto2, my take on that interview is, probably a wee bit off kilter. The dude seems to me, to be gay. And he seems to be a perfect FULL COMMIE prop.
Posted by: GUS | February 20, 2018 at 12:00 AM
Dave, so very sorry for your loss.
Posted by: Momto2 | February 20, 2018 at 12:01 AM
This is our ENEMY. Stupid, Clownish, Fucking nutty. But extremely dangerous.
THiS FUKWAD believes his OUTLOOK is acceptable as a SUPREME COURT JUSTICE, and so do THE FULL COMMIE.
Read his own TRIPE.
This race isn't about tim, it is about you and your rights. Do you want a Supreme Court that protects your right to vote? Do you want a Supreme Court that protects your right to hike and fish in a Wisconsin free from pollution? Do you want a Supreme Court that protects your right to ask for a pay raise
Posted by: GUS | February 20, 2018 at 12:09 AM
Yes but you need a motivated electorate on our side to turn out, remember the huntress and breitbart showing up for the last great contest. That burns was a partner suggests there is a lot of money available.

Narciso, when ILLEGAL ALIENS show up and demand xy or z, they need to be INDICTED by MUELLER.
Simple fucking logic.
Posted by: GUS | February 20, 2018 at 12:17 AM
Illegal Aliens are seen every day, supporting anti-American causes. Or rather CAUSES that are not AMERICAN. No different from this NONSENSICAL RUSSIAN INTERFERENCE. Seriously, read the INDICTMENT. What are these RUSSSSSSIANS accused of, that is any different from what....LIBERALS, and more specifically........ILLEGAL ALIEN MEXICANS, and/or other ILLEGALS attempt to do????
This LOGIC, is not DIFFICULT. If, non-citizens who attempt to affect or influence people to VOTE in a Manner, that THEY SUPPORT is a FEDERAL OFFENSE, then why isn't RODHAM in JAIL??
Posted by: GUS | February 20, 2018 at 12:29 AM
I read that RODHAM "warned" President TRUMP, NOT to PROSECUTE her.
Donald Trump IS the PRESIDENT. Rodham, is a CRIMINAL. Why would PRESIDENT TRUMP.....NOT...Prosecute this pathetic BITCH???
Seriously. RODHAM that HORRID PILE OF SHIT, paid 12 MILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLION DOLLARS to RUSSIANS and OTHERS, TO SLIME and LIE about DONALD TRUMP.
What would be wrong with GETTING EVEN with the PATHETIC LYING BITCH????

Sorry for the loss of your pop, Dave.
Good friends lost their 30 something daughter to breast cancer and another good friend her devoted husband to complications of lymphoma in the last week.

Some good news, at least from my perspective, with the end of President's Day.
This is first year, in a very long time, that I haven't seen some stupid caricature of Lincoln or Washington hawking something in a TV ad.
Is it just me?
