Joan Armatrading seems to specialize in those free flowing, melody free, introspective why-do-I-love-such-an-a-hole songs that pseudo-intellectual, New Yorker reading, upper middle class, prog white women seem to love, probably because they sound like the interminably tedious conversations pseudo intellectual prog white women have.

To paraphrase Raylan if everyone you have a relationship with is an a-hole; you're the a-hole.

Momto2

Since the news outlets are mostly partisan on steroids for the democrats, what I do is use Twitter to find out what's actually going on.

I liked that part of Newt's speech where he admonished the R's to realize and accept that the media WAS a part of the Dem party and just carry on. That is exactly what I have done. I NEVER sit down and watch any news program. Sometimes I hear or see a short clip that someone else has on but I immediately put up my filter (***This is Probably A Lie or at least is twisted***)

It is very dangerous and naive for any conservative politician to think of or treat the media as an ally or even as a fair party. They must assume they are engaging with the enemy when they go on these shows. Sadly, few of them seem to believe this obvious truth.

Tom Bowler

Great pieces, Clarice. So I was wondering, is lying to the FISC an intelligence gathering method that endangers national security if revealed?

Attended the funeral funeral of the “Granny” of one of our son’s friends at an American Baptist church in town yesterday, a congregation I had never visited. (She was a wonderful lady who cared for the boy after his mom died when he was young.)

Best thing we did in a long time. Wonderful people, service, music, preaching, fellowship, warmth, humor ... I could go on. Character and class.

A couple of thoughts about Twitter, younger voters, etc.

I think rse could confirm this, but over the years with the use of the internet, I have noticed a shortening of my attention span.

The internet trains your brain to receive information in short bursts. Many of the people on Twitter who are most effective instinctively use this characteristic and post information in short bursts linked together (threads). For younger people it is more effective than linking to an essay.

Regarding my own short attention=span, I have mae an effort to read novels which are in actual book form. It takes me a while to get back into the pattern of reading paragraphs of text, but not only are the novels enjoyable, it's good for my brain.

sbw

From the ONE guy here who should agree with me!

I do! I do! And with rse, too.

Bingo, Tom Bowler.

Extraneus

This is a thread about Conteras, the judge who okayed the FISA request.

How do we know this? All I saw was from a link to an oddball site I'd never heard of.

Btw, I suspect he's a dirty judge and hope we find out all about him and his deeds. Just don't know how we can claim this fact just yet.

As far as I know, none of the materials on which the memo was based have been released to the public yet. Isn't that true?

Tom Bowler

I always thought Libby was guilty of criminal disagreement with Russert, not lying to him, OL. :)

Tom Bowler

AS to what happens to a lawyer who lies to a FISA judge, my bet is nothing.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

More precisely, Dems like Holder view themselves and their party as the only legitimate wielders of power in the nation and so any exposure of how they grasp and hold onto that power is endangering national security, because they are the nation.
The rest of us they tolerate...for now.

Thank you for the story about the Mystic Massacre. It illustrates my theory about colonization and how the tribal societies were unable to detect the dangers of the explorers and sought to utilize them to further their own battles against other tribes. For me, it explains much about western civilization’s expansion into other continents, while having limited success in the Far East.

United we stand, divided we fall can be applied many places.

It also explains the careful and calculated measures Sessions and Trump are taking to deal with the corrupt rot in our government agencies. We do not operate in a vacuum and have many enemies who would take advantage (and probably have) of our weaknesses and divisions. They cannot destroy vast amounts of the deep state without making sure our enemies cannot take advantage of the situation. Faith is what we need now.

I would really, REALLY appreciate it if the lawyers here would read the Twittter thread I posted at 9:49.

I am not legally trained nor do I play one on TV. The information on that thread regarding the actions of Judge Sullivan (Contrera's replacement) seem pretty interesting. I am wondering if that recusal and replacement were more important than we knew.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Two thoughts inspired by clarice's excellent pieces;

1. Can we stop calling it the "unverified" Steele dossier and instead substitute "false" or "Russian propaganda" instead?

2. The appeal to the left that they should also be concerned that these abuses might one day be applied to them is not going to work. They know Hoover and Nixon were both outliers while corrupt scum like Clinton, LBJ, Obama, FDR and the Kennedys are the core of the Dem party.

These abuses exist precisely because they know they'll never be used against them and there is virtually no chance they'll ever be punished for engaging in them.

Of all the actions Bush took or didn't take, the lack of a full pardon for Libby was the worst.

It WAS cowardly.

From the Horde's book thread:

Because we had the Nunes memo released this week I am going to recommend The New Class: Analysis of the Communist System by Milovan Djilas. Djilas was a partisan during the war and a member of the politburo in Yugoslavia under Tito. He argues that instead of creating a classless society, the communists have replaced the capitalists with a New Class of rulers: the bureaucrat. As Marx predicted, the ruling class bureaucrats act in their own class interest by expanding their power and controlling institutions to consolidate their power. It is interesting history, and an insight into the mindset of Comey, McCabe, Strzok and the rest of the swamp.

I don't find anything nefarious about the J Sullivan action-

I do think Comey and Lynch and McCabe might be guilty of perjury re the FISC applications. Trey Gowdy w/ two tidbits of news in @FaceTheNation interview: 1.) the disclosure that dossier was politically motivated was contained in a footnote in FISA application; 2.) he has never met President Trump.

"An Organized Effort By Republicans To Obstruct": Democrats Draft Talking Points To Refute FISA Memo

Nadler's talking points - which are separate from the official response by House Intel Committee Democrats - call the GOP-authored memo "deeply misleading," according to Bloomberg, and claims that Republicans are now "part and parcel to an organized effort to obstruct" Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

“Until now, we could only really accuse House Republicans of ignoring the President’s open attempts to block the Russia investigation,” Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee said in the four-page letter released on Saturday. The document provided a point-by-point rebuttal to the Republican memo alleging bias in Mueller’s probe of possible links between Russia and Trump’s campaign, according to Bloomberg's summary.

“With the release of the Nunes memo -- a backhanded attempt to cast doubt on the origins of the Special Counsel’s investigation -- we can only conclude that House Republicans are complicit in the effort to help the President avoid accountability for his actions and for the actions of his campaign,” reads the talking points.

The "Nunes memo," as Democrats call it, claims that the FBI obtained a FISA warrant against one-time low-level Trump advisor, Carter Page.

“Carter Page was, more likely than not, an agent of a foreign power. The Department of Justice thought so. A federal judge agreed. The consensus, supported by the facts, forms the basis of the warrant issued,” Nadler writes in the rebuttal.

Carter Page was, more likely than not, an agent of a foreign power.“

i thought the feds had an eye on carter since 2013? If he was more likely than not a foreign agent was he not charged with anything in the 3 years before the 2016 fisa app? Did the Feds warn the Trump campaign if they were so concerned? or did they need carter because the primary objective was to use the intel community to spy on a presidential candidate?

If the Dems say the judge knew the dossier was a hit job paid for by the Dems then the judge(s) needs to be questioned. we are not talking about spying on Carter here, we are talking about spying on a Presidential candidate with an unverified dossier paid for by the opposing candidate.

Sara Carter: The second memo that the House Intelligence Committee is putting together. We’re still waiting for the Inspector General’s report that is going to be coming out. That’s going to be directed at Andrew McCabe, now former director Andrew McCabe, and others. And I think they’re terrified what’s going to come out here.

Here’s what we know. There was a second dossier that was put together by a person named Cody Shearer. He is a very controversial activist, a former reporter who worked with the Clintons in the past. And the FBI was also using this second dossier as part of what they were doing to back up the other dossier by Christopher Steele, an unverified dossier. And we believe Chistopher Steele was also sending information to the State Department in bits and snippets. But I think the most important thing here and one of the things they are going to be looking at very closely are the leaks. There were a number of leaks out unverified information by possibly senior members of the Obama administration.
