And going back to the original discussion on the last thread re Native population numbers, our disenfranchisement are based largely on "the research" that shows Abenaki are extinct and that "there weren't many to begin with."

So when legitimate tribal rolls begin to grow (Abenaki scalp bounty laws were still on the books in 1954 Vermont but repealed that year)because Abenaki come back to their ancestral home we hear the "angels" comment as we make our cases.

I am not Abenaki but I fought with them and supported them with legal work during my nine years in that communist state.

Their dispute, like all native sovereignty disputes is about *LEGITIMACY*. And when energy is involved, numbers matter because of "the greater good."

Zero created an unconstitutional quasi-legal status for some indeterminate number of people, promised them amnesty, and while leading from behind, dumped the whole thing on the next administration. If the Red Witch got in, we'd be crying in our beers about an expansive amnesty for millions instead if the millions that Trump now wants to amnesty. If he wanted to do anything other than give them script-era second-class citizenship he had "the gang of eight" and a solid 75 votes for whatever amnesty he would have proposed. Reagan did one and Clinton did about half a dozen. TARP was already passed-it was how he took over GM among other concerns. And the way the Dems bullied through Obamacare, an issue-like amnesty-that has bipartisan support in DC would have been easy otherwise.

Actually this is an example of his failed leadership-if he weren't such a bully on his stimulus, TARP,and Obamacare and started with amnesty, a bipartisan stimulus, and a less intrusive program with the remaining TARP (or used the remaining TARP for a massive corporate tax cut) he could have had a bipartisan Obamacare and we would be talking about Obama's 3rd term (quite literally, because I think if things had broken another way, the 22nd amendment would have been disposed of).
