JiB, I'm trying to think through an anticipatory book proposal that revolves around my OODA Loop President column. You made the right point in your above comment; in my column, I assert INFRASTRUCTURE is the political kill shot Trump will gut the Democrats with.
However . . . the National Constructors Association ??? That has given me some trouble this morning. I don't know if I'm having a brain cramp or what but . . . did they change their name recently? I can't find much on them, and what I do find is dated.
Can you (or anyone else here) help fill in some information, please?
I'm fascinated/horrified that yesterday, with the nation still reeling over the FL school murders and surreal news that the FBI was warned about mass murderer Cruz by name and intention, that Robert Mueller chose that moment to make the nothingburger announcement that he'd charged a few Russians with election shenans. On the last thread someone suggested Mueller, while FBI director, had centralized tip-reporting to DC and assigned way too few agents to handle them. If true, what a phenomenal story that would be in light of similar mass-shootings since then.
I pray that the FL victims' parents will lead the fight to find exactly why the system in place failed them, publish names of specific culprits like "Robert Mueller"-"James Comey"-field offices/agents, and that the nation will unite in making public pariahs out of them. Attempts to cover up such malfeasance should earn prison time too imo.
What infantile prigs.
They think they can manipulate Christians and Evangelicals as though we are these Mother Jones' caricatures whose only concern is everyone act like a choir boy.
We are actually capable of the moral calculation that a guy who may be a boor or even an unbeliever who nevertheless advances those interests most important to us is not only superior and more desirable as a leader than some antichrist like Hillary, but is also superior to a feckless believer like W who leaves office with our enemies stronger.
Hell, a muslim who ended abortion would be preferable to a useless Christian.

Good Morning, wasn't arming teachers part of President Trumps campaign? If every teacher in that school was trained in the use of handguns, there would have been a lot less death this time and may just deter future school shootings.
I assert INFRASTRUCTURE is the political kill shot Trump will gut the Democrats with.
I've been convinced of that since Trump announced his candidacy. Vocational training in high school and beyond, followed by high paying Mike Rowe-type skilled trades jobs for men and women. Skilled welders make more than most college grads. And licensed electricians even more.
If teachers don't want to carry a concealed handgun at work to protect our kids then let them quit. It might be a great way to get rid of these liberal teachers and hire more right thinking ones.
Where was that school resource officer, one wonders.
The FL school had ~3000 students, so likely more than 1 resource officer. However, the "highly selective" Sidwell Friends School, which Chelsea Clinton and the BOzo girls attended, has 13 security officers for ~1000 students, according to their site, which is vastly more than the avg 1500 students high school's 1 or 2. And Sidwell's doors were no doubt locked and manned throughout the school day.
If teachers don't want to carry a concealed handgun at work to protect our kids then let them quit.
Rocco, I wish you could have been here to see my hubs, the 20 yr high school teacher-20 yr high school admin's, hilarious reaction to the "arm-the-teachers" idea. "I can just see the cops arriving, and the principal points down a hall saying, "The bad guy went that-a-way, and by the way everyone down there is armed."
If the bad guy went that-a-way and everyone down there was armed, he'd be lying in a pool of his own blood.
Unless he would be laying in a pool of his own blood.
I blame my teachers.
With all due respect to your husband Deb, that principle should have been pointing his gun, not his finger down the hall. If every teacher is armed, the shooter would most likely be dead before the cops arrive.
I can just see arming my sister the retired art teacher. LOL! She would do almost anything for her kids, but she is NOT one you want to give a gun to!
I prefer letting those who can assume the responsibility (and have some skill) be armed, but ALL schools should have professional security. Why hasn't this been done?
I am amazed we haven't had a terrorist attack; I can only assume terrorist sympathizers know that it would be the surest way to get every non-citizen Muslim deported, no matter their immigration status.
There are unstable teachers in every school, but the idea of a few provably stable ones getting gun training and being available in a crisis makes sense. Being a school resource officer is a plum position, good hours and little danger. Their main job is to maintain good relationships with kids so hints of trouble get reported early.
Miss M, when I worked in DC there was a telephone book full of associations that gave money to politicians. You likely missed a couple hundred related to infrastructure. ;)
I am sure I did. Those are the ones which came up with "national contractors association" when I searched.
I bet if I searched "construction association" or "building trades association" I would get a bunch more, not counting searching under plumbers, carpenters, roads, steel, etc.
The reason I did the search is that I didn't think "constructors" sounded correct.

I encourage everyone to test the power of kindness on #RandomActsofKindnessDay. It’s an opportunity to teach our children the importance of taking care of one another.
Putting one or two resource officers in a school just doesn't make sense. There was one in Florida but the school is so large he wasn't effective. You can take away the guns but we all know how that turns out...more dead students. I believe in deterrence! What's the alternative?
Willowed, so bringing this over from the last thread:
Actually, Clarice (and Janet, who reposted her thought here in this thread), I think the REAL irony here is that Mueller, the same asshat who is investigating Donald Trump, was head of the FBI when they slow-walked and then buried the Uranium One investigation. Mueller shouldn't be within fifty feet of any investigation that has "Russia" anywhere in the description, unless he is the chief suspect. The idea that he is conducting the investigation just shows what an incredible bizarro-land world we live in.
One thing I would do is make sure that the doors are locked and can only be opened from the inside, in case of fire.
At the grade school my grandkids attended, I brought this up to the principal. It was after the terrorist attacks in New York and I felt that elementary schools were prime soft targets. They instituted locked doors and a check-in at the main desk for all visitors, with someone who could see adults entering and passing by the office without doing so. I never knew for sure, but I think they had an alarm system installed by the desk, too.
Classroom management was never a problem for hubs, but not so many teachers. The basics - making expectations clear, being consistent in enforcing them, putting troublemakers front and center right under his nose, giving parents a heads up, etc., are beyond more than a few teachers who refuse to do anything but send students to "the office". A few teachers will even bait kids to misbehave to get rid of them. Ugh. No way such weaklings should be armed. When hubs called "the office" over a kid, they came running, knowing something clearly wrong was happening.
Ignatz, he would be lying in a pool of his own blood. Lie is an intransitive verb, and has no object. So a person lies in his own blood. Lay is a transitive verb and requires an object. Ironically, they laid the shooter down in a pool of his own blood. Subject: they, Object: the shooter.
My mother was a career teacher, teaching English and then eventually becoming Dean of Girls at the junior high, finishing her career as a college dean.
She was a tiny woman but she had a very authoritative voice and never had discipline problems.
In fact, when she had to make a business call from home my dad would say, "Uh-oh, girls! They'd better look out - she's using the DEAN'S VOICE!" Ha!
Deb:
Your husband uses clear expectations and common sense in his dealings with students.
Rocco:
Good ideas which now may be put into effect.
Not all teachers would be comfortable
I say make students go through a metal detector as well in these larger schools.
All groups of law enforcement let the parents and students.
I want a financial settlement like the 37 million dollar one the parents in Baltimore got and that kid was actively breaking the law.
These innocent children were attending school to educate themselves.
I think we all need to remember the good in the world. The media shoves the ugly and evil in our faces constantly.
Also, for those of you who followed him, Imperator Rex has left Twitter. I don't know why. I ran across a thread talking about it, and when I went to search for him his account no longer exists.
FWIW, this is a free-HBO weekend. All the Harry Potter films are there. Ditto "Hidden Figures" a remarkable movie about the pivotal part a small group of AA women played in NASA's early days, John Glenn's launch in particular. And other goodies like "Hoosiers" and "Seabiscuit".
I was reading the article that was linked last night (MM?) about the Magellan telescope and noticed several references to the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab at UofA. I go, hmmm. That name seems familiar. Well, duh! I knew him as Dick Caris the founder of Interface, a buddy of my measurements mentor at AZ State and the supplier of nearly every loadcell I ever bought since 1970. His shop was (is) in Scottsdale and they make the best cells on the planet. Back in 2014 he donated $20MM to UA to build the mirror lab. Now that is sweet paying forward. I still buy from them today.

There are unstable teachers in every school, but the idea of a few provably stable ones getting gun training and being available in a crisis makes sense. Being a school resource officer is a plum position, good hours and little danger. Their main job is to maintain good relationships with kids so hints of trouble get reported early.
Posted by: DebinGA | February 17, 2018 at 11:42 AM
Miss M, when I worked in DC there was a telephone book full of associations that gave money to politicians. You likely missed a couple hundred related to infrastructure. ;)
Posted by: henry | February 17, 2018 at 11:43 AM
henry,
I am sure I did.

Putting one or two resource officers in a school just doesn't make sense. There was one in Florida but the school is so large he wasn't effective. You can take away the guns but we all know how that turns out...more dead students. I believe in deterrence! What's the alternative?
Posted by: Rocco | February 17, 2018 at 11:54 AM
Willowed, so bringing this over from the last thread:
Actually, Clarice (and Janet, who reposted her thought here in this thread), I think the REAL irony here is that Mueller, the same asshat who is investigating Donald Trump, was head of the FBI when they slow-walked and then buried the Uranium One investigation. Mueller shouldn't be within fifty feet of any investigation that has "Russia" anywhere in the description, unless he is the chief suspect. The idea that he is conducting the investigation just shows what an incredible bizarro-land world we live in.

Rocco,
One thing I would do is make sure that the doors are locked and can only be opened from the inside, in case of fire.
I never knew for sure, but I think they had an alarm system installed by the desk, too.

the teachers are a bunch of screwups

Why yes, I am a wannabe novelist. Why do you ask?

DebinGa,
My mother was a career teacher, teaching English and then eventually becoming Dean of Girls at the junior high, finishing her career as a college dean.

Okay, MM, I'm about to head out but . . . you're saying the National Constructors Association is likely a typo -- right?
I did find an outfit with that name:
https://greatnonprofits.org/org/national-constructors-association
But all of the info was dated. It appeared to me they morphed into some other association, perhaps. That's what I wanted to clarify with JiB.

Holy small world Batman!
