There's a much greater vein of stupid If you follow the thread, and some common sense.

Beasts of England

I understand the need for the CIA to leak information to friendlies. They're in the information business and need the flexibility to disseminate, as needed. That said, there has to be oversight and accountability in that privilege.

Beasts of England

Comey leaking to his friend - now his attorney - is a perfect example of abuse. The FBI is not in that business. Comey needs to be prosecuted.

Nytol

GUS

Beasts, did you ask JAMIE GORELICKS permission to leak info that might HELP US????????

JimNorCal

GUS

Beasts, in my college game programs', I was "LISTED" at 6' 190. Beasts, everyone's pal GUS.....6ft....190!!!!!!!
Big Jim Comey is listed on the PUSSY BOY ROSTER as 6'8" as tall as the WHITEHOUSE CURTAINS, and as HONEST as Ben Cartwright!!! If we haven't learned by now, WE NEVER WILL learn.
TIMMMMMMY 5' Geithner, is the only GOLDMAN SACHS MIDGET, who can save us from DISASTER, and a SECOND GREAT DEPRESSION!!!!! He's BEYOND REPROUACH, and short as Mickey Rooney. YET THIS FUCKWIT, couldn't navigate TURBO TAX.

For the love of GAWD!!!!! We are to believe that the INSIDER, G/S's GREASY SLEAZY LOSER, was actually using TURBO TAX??????? WHO THE FUCK IS THAT STUPID?????? Next we'll learn that ANDREA MITCHELL goes to H and R Block.

GUS

BEYOND REPROACH. EVERYONE AGREE'S THAT JIMMY CURTAINS COMEY, is so honest, that we should give him a FEDERAL HOLIDAY. No one could possibly be as honest as him. EXCEPT FOR TIMMY GEITHNER.
Ok. Who did Big douchebag Jimmy Comey hire in his 7th floor offices????
McCabe?? And just coincidentally, McCABES, wife.....DR McCabe, was convinced to accept a MILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLION and a Quarter in Terry McAuliffe and Associates CASH ....1.25 millllllion dollars to run for Virginia STATE SENATE............... SHE AGREED, and LOST, her husband......"Andy" fancied himself a BEEEEG MAHN, and ABOVE THE LAW. Strzok AND Page, were acolytes of "Andy".
UP NEXT??? Brucie Ohr, and his RUSSIAN SPEAKING WIFE NELLIE.......and some HAM RADIO....DEALIO????

Who the FOCK is this STOOOOOOOOOPID???

Brucie, FORGOT to DISCLOSE Nellie's income from FUSIONGPS??????? Her HAM RADIO and her RUSSIAN LANGUAGE EXPERTISE?????? COINCIDENCE???????

JimNorCal, it is amazing and bizarre what the VIEW, is and has become, as a media entity.
It is not possible, that the dysfunctional and abjectly LIBTARD efforts of this clown posse, can be FINANCIALLY VIABLE. I guess what I mean, is that THE FULL COMMIE LEFT, no longer cares if their media exploits have any FINANCIAL RETURN.
The parent company/companies, are ALL IN.
It's once again...BIZARRE. It makes no financial or logical sense. In other words, the IDEOLOGY, is perfectly willing to lose, rather than admit it's LUNACY.

The Infamous Ignatz

Concur with Porch.
There is a little thing called prior restraint.
There is also a little thing called you can't get a nutjob committed until they do something truly nutty and even then it is very tough to get past a 72 hour hold which I don't believe is sufficient to prevent gun ownership.

GUS

I agree Ignatz, the problem is, even when a goofy fuckwad, says......I'M GOING to SHOOT UP IGNATZ house on TUESDAY...........
Who acts upon that pseudo or not so pseudo threat???
Moreso, in the last 8 years, where was the PUSH, the NOTION, the LEADERS balls taking the lead in anything important to the general populace????
NOPE, we heard about NASA outreach and spending to MUZZZZLIM respect/ass kissing. We had all of our CABINET OFFICERS, agreeing to PAY, those who claimed RACIAL, CULTURAL, or RELIGIOUS mistreatment.
In FACT, 99% of American citizens, even those FULL COMMIE OBAMITES, were unaware of the OBAMA admin, WILLINGLY, PAYING OFF THOSE WHO CLAIMED unfair treatment. Our GOVERNMENT did not even defend itself. It's disgusting.

Gentlejim,

Yup, ain't nothing you can do prevent everything from happening.

Even with a 72 hour hold, if you can get it, there's no assurance of a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Even with a proper diagnosis and medication, there's nothing to prevent that individual from going off their meds.

What MEDS was this bastard on???
What law did this FUCKER break, so as to be denied his rights???
We are going to hear the same mamby pamby bullshit, the fucker was "BULLIED" etc.

Here's Sundance with a bold assumption that, if true, is another bombshell highlighting DOJ corruption:

FISA Court Presiding Judge Rosemary Collyer Responds to Chairman Nunes and Chairman Goodlatte Request for FISC Documents…

Moments ago FISA Court Presiding Judge Rosemary Collyer responded to the requests from the House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes and House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte...

However, there is an underlying issue not being discussed within the communication – yet visible in the corner amid their engagement. That issue is the possibility the DOJ may have modified the FISA documents within its possession in an effort to hide from congress the trail of a conspiracy against a presidential candidate and an incoming administration.

In essence, the FISA documents held by the court *may not be* identical to the FISA documents released by the Department of Justice. Chairman Goodlatte is seeking to rule out that possibility...

¹Chairman Goodlatte has viewed the FISA application as presented by the DOJ and is requesting to see the same application as presented by the FISA court.

At this stage I put nothing past anyone working at the DOJ.

jim nj

That's an interesting response. We've never been asked to do this before, but while we try to figure out how, or if, to reply.

The DOJ has everything you're looking for. You don't need us.

Modified limited hangout - we've never been asked this question before, don't want to set precedents, but don't need to, because the DOJ already has everything you're looking for.

That's like saying you're right. Could you, please, verify it elsewhere. As in, yes this was an abuse, but we normally act for the good of the country.

Time for some accountability by the law and docs who for the most part pay lip service to their oaths.

Wow! Is that ever over-estimating the field of psychiatry!
I'm sure Ig and matt can weigh in that.

It's sooooooo not science---or predictable, or treatable even.
These "diseases of moderntity" ones---the alienation to the point of murder being attractive.
They can't even predict which of their long term depressed patients is going suicide. Not to fault them--such is the nature of the human mind.

These are (mainly) diseases of spirit/soul/ whatever you want to call it.
Failure of connection/support--often from infancy on. We are tribal by evolution--it best served passing our genes on.
(This nuclear family stuff is extremely recent--and really not working out so well, is it? Because moms can--and do--die. And moms and dads get overwhelmed too.)

This kid would have done better being adopted by KK and schooled in the ways of his forebearers--or any guy running a ranch or a farm, I think---and spending his days with a strong adult (preferably male) doing real physical work, eating real food and being totally wrung out so he slept through the night.

You know what we are going to find out--wimpy kid, no or virtually no dad for whatever reason, spent his younger days video gaming in his living room, then retreated to his bedroom as he got older to "live" online.

Becoming weirder and weirder or at least less connected as time went by...
that's if he wasn't psychotic, and if he was--there is nowhere to put these people any more, unless you are a bozillionairre.
Because ?civil rights?, I guess.
Why we no longer have asylums, or any places of safety for the frail and damaged.

There is a term that keeps coming up in the global "let's use ed to create societal transformation" documents called "consciously creating consensus." All the hyping of the number of school shootings that turn out to include drive-by shootings near school playgrounds in bad neighborhoods and personal grudges on school grounds with planned mass murder are trying to do just that.

Those same documents tout mass media as the other pincer apart from education on consciously creating a desired consensus on the need for change. That rather diminishes appalled's assertion yesterday that we don't know this is a conspiracy. It certainly is a well-laid out and planned coordinated effort around a common goal.

Exactly daddy.

Don't know why they weren't plainer with the judge - "we have reason to believe a fraud was perpetrated on the court and don't wish to take the word of those who we believe did it".

Also don't know why the judge would hesitate - nothing having to do with the court's deliberations or decision making process is being questioned (at least not yet), all that's being asked for is the input. Classification doesn't matter, Nunes is cleared. (And so far, has there been anything classified for legit reasons? It's all been to conceal the illicit activity so far.)

And hasn't the FISC seemed remarkably incurious about all of this? Why isn't Collyer issuing orders for the DOJ FBI parties to appear before her and answer some questions?

And they would have had to act nearly instantly, because they had no way of knowing how soon the crime was to be committed.

Brilliant young men at MM's 8:02 link! Don't miss it.

Sorry - it appears I am being misunderstood about the FBI. I was not inferring they should have swooped down, arrested Cruz, and locked him away. It just seems at the very least a warning - a red flag - could have been associated with him. If the FBI contacts me about a threat made by a child living in my house - I am taking away the gun key!

jimmyk

What could they have done that could have prevented the act and not violated Cruz's rights?

The issue is his mental state, and who has the ability and/or responsibility to assess that and take appropriate action. I don't know the specifics here, and don't have simple answers. What is the mechanism to declare someone sufficiently disturbed that he is not allowed to purchase or own a gun?

Extraneus

For all the good Andy McCarthy does, he's still kind of a naiive putz.

From MMs 6:05:

The dilemma was that the Obama administration had placed “the incoming team” — in particular, President-elect Trump — under investigation. Remember, Obama’s law-enforcement agencies believed the Steele dossier. No, the FBI had not been able to corroborate it; but, as former FBI director Comey told Congress, the bureau deemed its author, Christopher Steele, to be a reliable source. Steele, moreover, had collaborated on the project with Nellie Ohr, the wife of Bruce Ohr, Yates’s top aide at the Justice Department. Even if the Justice Department and the FBI could not prove Steele’s allegations, at least not yet, they still believed that Trump was compromised and that the Russians could be blackmailing him. If they had not believed those allegations were credible, they would not have put them in a warrant application to the FISA Court.

He still can't quite grasp the idea that his pals in the FBI, DoJ and/or FISC would conspire to frame an incoming president whom they despised.

I guess I'll read on, but at that point in the piece I give his judgment no value. He knows stuff about the process, and seems like a pretty smart guy, but he's actually a fool.

I'd love to play poker with Andy McCarthy.

Threadkiller

What could they have done that could have prevented the act and not violated Cruz's rights?

I don't know. I'm assuming whatever ever they could have done would have been more effective if they made an effort to meet him.

These are step 12 arguments. I am asserting that they failed somewhere around step 1 or 2.

Buckeye

What could they have done that could have prevented the act and not violated Cruz's rights?

And they would have had to act nearly instantly, because they had no way of knowing how soon the crime was to be committed.

Or that any crime was about to be committed.

For every Cruz who actually does something, there are likely dozens talking similar smack on social media.

Intervention with Cruz needed to happen years ago.

Threadkiller

Since we are guessing at the outcome of a hypothetical visit from the FBI prior to the massacre, who is to say that Cruz wouldn't have taken a couple of shots at the Feds when they knocked on his door?

Seems we now know two possible outcomes had the FBI done more than offer a tip line that didn't work.

Appalled

Ext:

I would read on. McCarthy always seemed to believe Comey was a man of honor. It's pretty clear he does not believe that any more. He seems him as a man who lied to his chief (and pretty much everyone else).

As an incidental matter, I don't know how you sustain a obstruction of justice charge against Trump, when it's clear Comey was lying to him from the get go.

Just a word of advice for that poker game -- cynics are easy to play, because you know they are always assuming the worst.

Extraneus
Now, you can believe that the Obama administration’s motives were political, that the Trump–Russia collusion narrative was mainly a Democratic-party concoction to rationalize Hillary Clinton’s defeat and cripple Trump’s fledgling administration. Or you can believe that Obama officials, altruistically motivated to protect national security, were convinced that Trump was in cahoots with the Kremlin, and they were desperately trying to prove it. Either way, though, the challenge for Obama’s team was to keep the investigation going even after Trump took office.

The FBI should have found Cruz's identity from the YouTube. Primary responsibility for dealing with Cruz was with the school district and Broward County law enforcement. They both knew who and what they were dealing with.

Porchlight

These arguments remind me of the underpants gnomes.

I don't think any of us really want the state to have the power, or the responsibility, to track down the IP of every violent comment online and make sure that person is taking his meds/not allowed access to guns/whatever else it takes to prevent a hypothetical crime.

Threadkiller

From the bondsman's statement, it isn't that much of a reach to figure that the FBI actually did know who he was, Henry. After the shooting they quickly contacted the man who warned them last year.

There are not nearly enough LE personnel to investigate actual crimes.
Given that, what are they supposed to do with every threat or loathsome comment some moron makes on social media or to an acquaintance? Assign a couple of agents to follow them all for a few years?
You think we have a surveillance state now?

Besides many of these people are not psychotic and are therefore not really treatable, to the extent psychoses even are.
Some dope who has been abused and/or developed or was born with some personality issues like anti-social personality disorder or psychopathy is simply not manageable until they do something requiring incarceration.
And for those who are psychotic, the anger and paranoia required to become homicidal is precisely the type of person who uniformly rejects and is suspicious of any attempts to treat.
Matt's heroic efforts on behalf of the mentally ill, which clarice kindly but incorrectly conflated with my concern for my son, would potentially improve the lives of millions, but I'm not sure of its effects on these cases. That's one out of tens of thousands of comments online, maybe hundreds of thousands, that could merit a referral.

What is the bench mark for too violent of a comment?

Exactly.

Threadkiller

There are not nearly enough LE personnel to investigate actual crimes.

I used to think that. Then i saw that a police car slid off the shoulder in a single car accident and more than 20 other police cars showed up to close down lanes of traffic for hours, while the rest of the force went to the hospital.

TK,

Those 20 cops are not detectives and only have to be called out for a few hours to help with traffic after a known dangerous event has occurred.

" ... The unfortunate reality is that if we have to rely on government functioning at a high level to keep us safe............... "

As Porch and others have mentioned, none of us wants to live in the police state in which the government has the manpower and resources to protect us from ALL threats, either these homicidal domestic teen school shooters OR foreign terrorists.

A centralized solution always means a single point of failure and/or a single point that can be corrupted to oppress the people.

The answer is to have a distributed system, or as Instapundit says, "an army of Davids":

Localized assets already emplaced within the schools and other soft targets preyed upon by those with malicious intent - namely, THE PEOPLE, responsible citizens who have been properly trained, socialized, and adequately-armed to counter whatever immediate threats they confront.

When seconds count, the police still won't get there in emergencies for several minutes.

Threadkiller

Those 20 cops are not detectives and only have to be called out for a few hours to help with traffic after a known dangerous event has occurred.

They were called to the scene of a car essentially parked on the shoulder of the road after colliding with no other vehicle. Do you think 20 cops would do the same for you?

There is much more time in the day with proper management.

Sessions commented: “Something I’ve said for over a decade, and remains true, is that Congress seems always willing to pass any law that pretends to fix immigration as long as it does not.

“You propose legislation that will actually reverse the illegality — that seems never to pass. You draw the conclusion that there are forces out there that not only want more immigration, but they want illegal immigration to doncitnue, which is totally contrary to the will of the American people as expressed in November 2016.

“I remain firmly convinced,” he continued, “that the American people rightly and justly want an end to the illegalty, and to create an immigration system that serves the national interest. And so that is what President Trump is calling for — an end to the illegality, and a merit-based system that serves America’s interest.

I watched the men's figure skating short program last night. A typical great performance gets a score in the 80's.

Then came this guy from Japan whose name I can't recall or pronounce. Little guy, says a prayer before the music starts, and then looked like he was meditating on the ice.

Then he starts. It was the most amazing ice skating performance I have ever seen. Just about perfect. Amazing, clean, incredible.

He scored 111 points. 2nd biggest score in Olympic history (I want to know who got more).

The next 3 skaters (in the top five all crashed and burned, probably having heard the score announced.

I could barely keep my eyes opened, but it was very very cool

Porchlight

Ok, how does the IP trace work? Does FBI have to make a legal request to the site host? Then what? What if the site host refuses? What is the cutoff for which comments require traces, as TK asked? Once the referral to school and law enforcement is made, are those entities now liable for future crimes?

Threadkiller

What is the cutoff for which comments require traces, as TK asked?

The practicality is a separate issue.

No, that's just it. It's not a separate issue. It only seems like a separate issue in hindsight after we have matched up a comment with a person and a crime.

If you go to a bridge and start screaming exactly what Cruz wrote, is it the nanny state that intervenes?

He chose to offer up his IP address.

Deplorable Don Surber comments on DACA:

"Remember in September when every expert pundit in Washington and on TV said President Trump had caved on DACA? From my laptop in Poca, West Virginia, I advised readers to relax. Wait and see what will happen.

Now we see what is happening.

Nothing."

Porch, Patriot Act no warrant required. Google (YouTube owner) generally cooperates.

I agree that it is a nanny state. It is what the swamp built as it exists today.

Further, chasing this guy should be a local issue, not FBI. The locals already kicked him out of school. That is where the problem is.

Porchlight

Threats against The Executive?

Yes. Historically that has been the cutoff and even then, resources are stretched in tracking people down.

It strikes me as odd:

We have one set of comments showing the FBI running amok because of security concerns; and

Another thread questioning whether the FBI was totalitarian enough, because of security concerns.

I can understand why Porchlight is concerned.

But he hadn't committed a crime, henry. The school kicked him out for his behavior there, but he hadn't done anything illegal. What comes next that doesn't violate his rights?

Appalled: "Just a word of advice for that poker game -- cynics are easy to play, because you know they are always assuming the worst."

Surely Ext, indeed OL for that matter, is an optimist at heart?
Loudly proclaiming cynicism is hardly the same as authentic cynicism.

--Love the way you write.--

Heh. To each his own. I thought that was a particularly awkward sentence and wasn't sure the end even made sense but gave up, figuring you guys could figure it out. :)

It's a lot easier to connect the dots after the picture appears.

The beauty of that comment is that it applies both to McCarthy and the Florida shooter.

Porchlight

Porch, Patriot Act no warrant required. Google (YouTube owner) generally cooperates.

But what does that really entail? How is it obtained? Does a judge sign off? Either way it takes time and labor.

Now multiply by thousands or tens of thousands.

Now calculate the labor for the follow up and referrals, on both ends.

All for a hypothetical.

Short step to arresting people for speech, as we here at JOM have always castigated Europe for doing.

I'll stop here but I'm really surprised to be reading this from the same people (rightly) complaining about attacks on civil liberties.

Threadkiller

Resources are stretched due to the same mismanagement we have recently seen at the top of the FBI and DOJ.

Back to the totally separate privacy/nanny state argument, what are the expectations of a person who physically stands in a public arena saying outloud exactly what Cruz said?

Extraneus

I'll take a cynic or realist over a Pollyanna in a high-stakes game any day, Jim.

I don't want a police state, and I know that some people will stay under the radar enough to avoid detection, but come on ... this should have raised enough red flags that SOMETHING else should have been done:

https://nypost.com/2018/02/16/deputies-called-to-suspected-shooters-home-39-times-over-seven-years/

"Before Nikolas Cruz carried out his mass killing at a Florida high school this week, police responded to his home 39 times over a seven-year period, according to disturbing new documents."

"Details about the calls to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office — obtained from police records by CNN — were not immediately available and it was impossible to determine if all involved Cruz."

"But the nature of the emergencies at his Parkland home included “mentally ill person,” “child/elderly abuse,” “domestic disturbance” and “missing person,” KTLA reported."

"And a schoolmate, Brody Speno, told the network that cops were called to Cruz’s home “almost every other week.”"

henry

Porch, did he have a right to be at the school he was kicked out of? (Is such trespassing by an adult a crime?)

I am suggesting two things here:

1. it is far too easy for the FBI to identify a person making a post if it wants to (no real technical or legal impediments).

2. the local schools / community is where to look for solutions. Expelling Cruz from the school didn't work (yes 20/20 hindsight).
