So, the Broward County Sheriff's Department increased its budget request by over $200,000 because of Parkland High School. Seems like the citizens didn't get a good return on their money.
The opposition of the National Education Association and the teachers who have been put forward to speak on the issue of arming teachers is extremely troubling. They offer no rational arguments.
Earlier this week a fron page "news" piece in my Hartford Courant entitled "Teachers Call Arming Them Horrible Idea" quoted teachers concerned that teachers having guns might convey the impression to students that school is not a safe place (ya think?). "Teachers are seen as trusted, calm voices in a crisis. If a teacher took out a gun and shot a visitor, all trust would be gone. Imagine a second-grade teacher who comforts small children then pulling out a gun and shooting someone in front of students. That would be the end of the students' trust. More guns do not mean more safety."
I did not make that up. That is an actual quote from "Sarah Faulkner, a science teacher at East Granby Middle School.
The same piece quoted another teacher worried about educators having to take on "the awesome responsibility of taking a life" if necessary. The awesome responsibility of actually protecting the lives of the innocent children they teach doesn't seem to have entered the calculus.
Today's Hartford Courant Op Ed section has a piece by a history teacher at Avon Old Farms (a tony private school with a reputation for turning out pro hockey and baseball players) arguing that he "refuses to be weaponized" because "teaching well requires an extraordinarily complex set of skills" and "A weapon in my classroom would have a dramatic chilling effect on intellectual and creative vibrancy." He never explains why that would be the case, or why it would be the case if a math teacher or a gym teacher or a science teacher were to carry a gun--or how having a gun locked in a safe for emergencies would have any effect whatsoever on his ability to teach. He takes offense at Trump's suggestion of paying teachers a bonus for taking on the task, saying that contemptuously that Trump "thinks 'a little bit of a bonus' would turn 10 percent to 40 percent of us into part time security guards" (why not? It turns many of you into part-time coaches and tutors), and arguing that most teachers "left more remunerative jobs to become educators (which is why they are so accepting of pension and pay cuts, right?). Again--he offers no reason other than "it feels icky and guns are dangerous" (my parody--not his actual words)--nor does the NTA. They also offer no solutions other than "ban assault weapons" and outlaw the NRA. Which are not solutions at all.
The "news" piece also noted that there are Eight states where laws have been passed allowing teachers to carry firearms in schools. Yet the writer never took the obvious step of finding out what the experience has been in those states--or if she did she doesn't tell us what that experience has been.
The muddle-headed thinking (or not thinking) displayed by the "educators" on this issue leads me to wonder if they have a point. Maybe they really are too stupid and irresponsible to be trusted with weapons. And yet we are forced to trust them with our children.
Can't believe all the fools slobbering over Tapper for his interview with the Sheriff. Every so often Tapper is forced into confronting obvious idiocy on the left, but 99% of the time he tries to cover for it.
It's a bit like what happened with Comey and Hillary. He did his best to cover for her, but when the NYPD had Weiner's laptop with her e-mails all over it, he was forced into reopening the case. Some fell for this and thought he acted with integrity, but the new investigation was just theater.
It's the same with Tapper. He just gets a bit of cover for his usual shilling for Dems, which he will return to in short order.
He ought to be answering hard questions himself about why his network has been openly advocating for gun control by elevating a select few activist kids to fame and rushing to stage an aggressively anti-NRA town hall before the facts of Israel's failures could be exposed.
Boatbuilder:
Arming the teachers is a logical solution suggested after all of these tragedies.
If certain teachers don’t like it don’t arm them.
Many coaches would be glad for the extra security measures.
Do that, metal detectors and lock up your school.
My off-the cuff research (Google, Firefox, Duck Duck Go) indicates that since at least 2013 (Sandy Hook was in 2012) there have been lots of armed teachers and security guards in schools, in states which permit it (including CT, which permits armed security guards). I can't find any instance of anyone getting hurt or shot (there was one incident in which a teacher accidentally discharged a gun in a bathroom.)
Does anyone doubt for a moment that if some horrible incident (or even a minor mishap) has occurred the NEA and our totally unbiased media would have missed it?
Why is the NEA opposed to this? My guesses--a) security guards are potential union members--i.e., more money--b) they don't want their union members to do anything more than their union contracts call for--until they can negotiate for more money---c) they are an unofficial arm of the Democratic Party, and this is purely political. aqqa
I also believe that locking our kids up in maximum-security facilities detracts from the nurturing educational experience that all these lefties blather on about. A few "good guys with guns" lets the rest of the teachers (and the kids) go on about what they otherwise would do without being locked up.
Just my 2 cents.
Daughter tells me her (private, Jewish) high school has armed guards. I knew they had a lot of security, but they understandably are mum on the details. I've never seen any guns, but she tells me they've got them. I suspect it's just common knowledge among the students and staff there, without being made explicit. I'm reassured, in any case, since the school would be an obvious target.
There seems to be a regular disconnect between how private and public schools handle safety . At my sons private school there always was someone guarding the doors and until high school, monitoring the pickups to make sure no kid got into an unauthorized car. At the nearby public school, no one monitored the kids leaving the elementary school and I used to see them dashing out into street traffic with no one monitoring it.
On our trip to Israel last year it was not uncommon to see people, civilians, with full auto M-16's slung over their shoulders.I would assume that some also carry concealed. It is an armed society just as Switzerland is an armed (full auto) society.
Sometimes those weapons get used when terrorists try to knife innocent bystanders etc.
Bet most of the politicians and journalists lecturing us about how "demented" it would be to have armed staff in the public schools have their kids in private schools.
Even at the high school, hubs tells me he (admin) and several teachers are outside monitoring the bus-car pickup zones before and after school. Kids walking home just take of, but they aren't dodging cars/buses in the monitored zones with impunity.

A 99-page report of the 2017 Fort Lauderdale Airport shooting, drafted by officials in the department, said that their own agency made mistakes from the start by not taking command of the shooting area at the baggage claim, where the perpetrator killed five people and injured six others.
“During the events, the absence of a clearly defined [incident command] created unnecessary entanglements and unclear responsibilities,” the report revealed.
Pandemonium ensued.
Before the 2017 report came out, Israel described his agency’s response to The Sentinel in an interview in April 2017, saying, “Everything was done excellently,” and adding that the situation was more like “controlled chaos.” The response is similar to Israel’s defense of his own present performance following the Parkland shooting, stating he has given “amazing leadership.”
Boy would I like to see her in the mix for 2020. Sure, she'll shtruggle putting together cogent thoughts and phrases, but who'd have the guts to take the gloves off?
“As a result of the media reports coming out showing the gross incompetence of the @browardsheriff, I am calling on @FLGovScott to remove sheriff Israel from his post. We must also modernize our law enforcement agencies to ensure that such a catastrophic breakdown in communication never occurs again,” tweeted Hager.
...
In the meantime, Gov. Scott has ordered the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to probe local police’s response to the shooting.
Former NYPD officer and Florida GOP insider John Cardillo says Gov. Scott ordering the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to probe the police’s response is “the first step in removing a Sheriff for malfeasance or incompetence.”

U.S. Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy questioned why White House adviser and first daughter Ivanka Trump attended the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Winter Games closing ceremony Sunday, saying she didn't work hard like the athletes to be there.
"So proud of all these people!" Kenworthy wrote on Twitter, attaching a photo of the 2018 U.S. Olympic team ahead of the pageant.
"Everybody here has worked so hard to make it to the Olympics and have the opportunity to walk in the closing ceremony! Well... Everyone except Ivanka. Honestly, tf is she doing here??" he continued.
Earlier in February, Kenworthy became the second openly gay athlete competing at Pyeongchang to say he would not attend a White House reception if invited.

New "Face The Nation" host Margaret Brennan read out Israel's quote and asked [Florida Rep. Ted Deutch (D.)] if he agreed.
"Well, I'll tell you what the sheriff needs to do, and he's doing it," Deutch said. "I talked to the sheriff last night about this. We need to find out exactly what happened, why it was that there were so many signals, not just from the visits but the social media postings."
The FBI has also admitted it failed to follow through on a credible tip before the shooting that the killer was dangerous.
"We can do two things. We can continue to figure out what happened to make sure that never happens again and still take meaningful action to ensure that weapons of war, like the one that this shooter used, can never be used in another mass shooting," Deutch said.
Which only an idiot could believe is possible.
Deutch and Israel both participated in a CNN town hall Wednesday and called for stronger gun control laws.
And didn't call for "figur[ing] out what happened to make sure that never happens again" at the time.
Wish someone find out if the FBI follows up on non-specific tips (no time/place) or even passes along non-specific tips to local LE, as it looks to me like they don't.
I was just reading about the NRA and noticed that one of their past national presidents has a link to JOM. Has this been previously noted, because that's pretty darned cool...
James D, I am sure that once an intelligent child became 8, 9, or 10 in the David Brooks household, he or she would have that insufferable man's number. I bet he tried a lot of "oh, shucks, it's just me, dad," and I bet his progeny despised him from very early on. Children can smell weakness. None of that with my dad; I knew he was a force to be reckoned with.
"But nobody ever responds 'what you're promising is impossible".
True. And, in addition, nobody ever responds that if we "figure out what happened to make sure that never happens again" there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to also"take meaningful action to ensure that weapons of war, like the one that this shooter used, can never be used in another mass shooting."
"Why must I be a teenager in love in charge of the country?"
After people (the youth leaders of Parkland's "Never Again" children's crusade) left and the night finally ended at 11 p.m., Hogg tried to go to sleep. He played “Gangsta’s Paradise” by Coolio in a bid to unwind. In a few hours, he had to be awake. He had another interview to do.

Just Thursday, Mrs. Buckeye and I took Buckeyette to Lancaster, Ahia to have lunch at Shaw's, an iconic restaurant in an old downtown hotel.

I think it is a Chicago thing, the Daley prescription to staying in power. Well learned by Jarrett and Obama.
I know OL has a special rate for The Ledge and it is certainly attractive but I am going to hang out with RG and the other's on MM's verandah until I see more revelations from Grassley, Nunes and Goodlatte. I give them 2 more weeks then if the special rate is still available I will move to the Ledge.
I hear OL has a web cam in Elmer's office showing him snoring.

I agree with Jack.
It is time for some action on exposing the bad guys and starting the wheels of justice turning.
So far the wheels have just been spinning.
Hil and Obama and company and their misdeeds need to be the prime topic of conversation.
All these other phony news items are simply distracting from the real information of corruption and illegal actions of Democrats.
DiFi is persona non grata.
Only a matter of time.
Dems never know when to get off the stage.

Mooch versus Curb Dive? Both extremely unpleasant, fat, lazy with huge senses of entitlement and resentment. You can probably uninsure that glass ceiling.

I would think Moochelle would follow Hillgula's act and run for Senate first. She will be a terrible candidate nationwide more so than Hillgula was. Trump will massacre her and without it looking like racism just by pointing out the failings of her husband and even her mediocre but expensive to us job as FLOTUS.
Plus, when did she start become proud off her country and why was she not beforehand?

If David "They're demented" Brooks had school age kids, they'd almost certainly be in a private Jewish school with armed security like jimmyk's.
Sorry Deb - Nebbishy Brooks is a born again Niebuhrsian. At present, the new, young Christian wife has his ear. His first wife, who converted to Judaism, is perhaps shlepping the youngest to a private Jewish school.

Great game so far. All the players stood for their national anthems and sang them in unionsense. Wow. NFL should look and listen.
So far, Ireland 15, Wales 13. A humdinger.

Posted by: Catsmeat | February 25, 2018 at 06:12 PM
"But nobody ever responds 'what you're promising is impossible".
True. And, in addition, nobody ever responds that if we "figure out what happened to make sure that never happens again" there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to also "take meaningful action to ensure that weapons of war, like the one that this shooter used, can never be used in another mass shooting."
