"Watching Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome."

I don't know that there any liberal parts in the movie. Suggestions?

hoyden

I'm a wimpy masochist. I'm trying to grind my way through the McCarthy's NR analysis of Schiff's memo. I'm looking at the scroll bar and wondering if I'm really only half way though. So I decided to jump to the bottom and found, "In sum, the Schiff memo does more to harm than to advance the Democrats’ defense of the Obama administration and the use of the FISA process by the FBI and the DOJ."

The local Fox news station briefly and breathlessly reported that the Schiff memo refutes the Nunes memo.

I'll wait for a Clarice-clear explanation, if one is forthcoming. In the meantime I'll do a "consider the source" and trust that Schiff is being true to self.

My latest piece at American Greatness has been posted.

Who do you think you are, Black Panther?

https://amgreatness.com/2018/02/25/think-black-panther/

I would like to have massaged it a bit better, it may have needed an explanatory column before this one was posted, and a discussion column after this one . . . blah, blah, blah. Y'all know the deal.

To me, this movie as written presents a very interesting opportunity on *this* side of the political aisle.

I'll be especially curious to see the responses here from people that have seen the flick. I'm wondering if anyone will see what I see. Or see something else even better.

* * *

I have to go see a hernia surgeon today for an initial exam, and my right hip is having what seems to be a bit of a weird response to the steroid shot . . . so, I may or may not engage some back and forth this morning (I think I will) but I'll be lurking, even if not commenting. By tonight, I'll be around for sure.

I have not seen the film and doubt I will, but I understood your points in the article and they made sense. Well-written, too!

Post-Parkland, Colleges Announce Anti-Gun Protest Suspensions Won't Affect Admissions

Few things make me as simultaneously sad and frustrated as what is happening to higher education in this country. In an apparent effort to boost the number of anti-Second Amendment high school walkouts, colleges and universities are now announcing that suspensions for anti-gun protests won’t harm their chance of admission.

It’s not difficult to understand from these announcements that such suspensions would actually make the applicant more attractive to these
very institutes of higher learning. In this socio-cultural climate, nothing says “top admissions candidate” like a proven record of social justice agitation
and protest.

Terry McAuliffe: ‘Who Better to Take on Trump Than Me?’

Democrat Terry McAuliffe said he would be the party's best choice to "take on" President Donald Trump in 2020.

"Who better to take on Trump than me?" McAuliffe said when asked by the Washington Free Beacon about a potential 2020 run for president, strongly indicating he will indeed throw his hat in the ring.

...

McAuliffe said he knows he can stand up to Trump because he's known him for a long time, a relationship that led to Trump cutting a $25,000 check for McAuliffe's unsuccessful 2009 run for governor of Virginia.

McAuliffe said he's "golfed with Trump five times." He said Trump is a "scratch golfer" and said he never saw him cheat when they played together, casting doubt on accusations of cheating made by others.

Last month McAuliffe told MSNBC's Chris Matthews that Trump has the ability to make his opponents "look weak," but that if Trump tried to do that to McAuliffe, "you would have to pick him up off the floor." When asked by Matthews if he was saying he would "deck him," McAuliffe said, "Listen, if this guy got in my space, you wanna get in my space, I’ve always said Chris, you punch me, I’m going to punch back twice as hard. And it wouldn’t be hard to do it, but you know, this guy thinks he could intimidate everybody. It’s disgraceful. It’s embarrassing."

If you've never read Wretchard on Twitter, now might be a good time to check out his tweets over the last 24 hours. For instance, here are a few slightly modified observations from that period:

The reason lighting the Eiffel Tower has no effect on the Boko kidnappers is they are a strong link network. Ideas from outside their cluster are not admitted. The liberals lighting the Eiffel Tower are sending signals out on an unmonitored frequency.

In other words, their actions are so substantively neutered as to be functionally meaningless.

* * *

More:

The reason why militants kill their moderates is they want to shut down vectors of outside influence. The power of moderates is they are Windows on the World. That is their value.

Yep, yep. In the real world, shiznit can get brutal real fast. Wretchard opines that the moderate Democrats have unwisely aided in their liquidation.

* * *

But this point made by Wretchard may have intrigued me most:

From an operational point of view liberal networks are much easier for foreign intelligence agencies to attack because they are more hierarchical, secretive and cohesive. By contrast conservatives have mesh networks. Subverting them is like herding cats.

Yes! Does anyone else see this point as linkage back to Tocqueville *and* today's Army of Davids approach?

* * *

Finally, a shout out to the Founders:

The Founding Fathers had an interesting defense against conspiracy. They made hierarchies non-persistent and hard to form. In a way they understood network theory before it was formalized.

* * *

Hmmmmmmm . . . network theory . . . definitely some good food for thought on a Monday morning.

From one of my newsletters:

TODAY IN COURT: The Supreme Court will hear arguments today in a case that could shrink government-union coffers — and political contributions from those unions, on which Democrats have long depended — by as much as two-thirds. The case, Janus v. AFSCME, challenges the fees that government unions collect from union nonmembers to cover their share of collective bargaining costs. Plaintiff Mark Janus, an Illinois state worker who declined to join the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, argues that the payments he's compelled to pay AFSCME violate his First Amendment rights. The facts of the case are near-identical to those in Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association , on which the high court deadlocked in 2016, following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. The addition of Justice Neil Gorsuch is widely expected to give plaintiffs the fifth vote they need to outlaw the nonmember fees. That would be a serious blow to Democrats on the eve of a competitive midterm election campaign. Government unions account for about 6 percent of the money spent on Democratic candidates in federal elections — and that doesn't include the significant in-kind contributions these unions provide through such activities as phone banks, door-to-door leafleting, and driving voters to the polls on Election Day. — POLITICO's Andrew Hanna. Read more here.

— "The outcome could shake the foundations of public-sector union power across the nation—especially in New York. About 73 percent of New York state and local government employees—roughly 1.2 million in all, including many professionals, mid-level managers and administrators—are covered by union contracts. That's more than double the national average of 39 percent, and the highest percentage found in any state. New York government unions received at least $862 million withheld from worker paychecks in 2016, including $112 million in 'agency fees' from nearly 200,000 government employees who have chosen not to join unions. Government employers will have to stop withholding fees from these non-members if the court rules for Mark Janus ..." — Empire Center's Kenneth Girardin. Read more here.

— Professional Staff Congress President Barbara Bowen: "Janus v. AFSCME is not an innocent First Amendment case; it is a calculated, well-funded attempt to dismantle everything the labor movement has won—for all working people, not just union members. It is an attack on women, on immigrants, on people of color, on the young, on workers everywhere."
