As to the politics, my guess is that if the Democrats pushed hard for a ban on all semiautomatic rifles they would get even more votes in their urban enclaves, for a net pickup of roughly zero House seats, while getting buried across New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, and anywhere else non-urban Democrats are lurking.

But they should test it and see!

I have some sad news to report. After 35 years of burning wood to heat my four various homes in that time, I have less than a day's amount of wood left, and when it is gone I will close that chapter of my life. When I moved to MN from VT in 2000 after living for 22 years in VT and NH, I first encountered trouble getting wood. It's not that wood isn't available, the wood is prohibitively expensive, $350+ per cord, in the Twin Cities, and the wood suppliers cheat you with delivering less than a cord, or selling "face" cords.

About 10 years ago I found a hauler who would deliver 5 cords of uncut, unsplit logs to my backyard using one of those trucks with the crane on the back. I bought a 32" chainsaw and 35 T wood splitter, and I cut and split my wood. I was in firewood heaven. My supplier went out of business in 2016 and now I'm burning the last remaining wood and construction scraps. On Sunday it'll all be gone and I will drop the fires.

Come next Winter, and it is coming, I will replace the wood stove with a gas fired insert. Burning wood for heat is a boutique activity in the metro. I have given the ND frackers a virtual hug for their part in making gas a viable heat source. God bless them.

I discovered a misnomer in my earlier comment about having to go out to do some splitting before the next storm "surge" arrives. Probably storm "pulse" is more accurate. Most storm "surges" y'all are familiar with wouldn't trouble me at 4500' elevation in the Central Sierra. Shoulda had plenty of wood stacked and covered, but diabetic fatigue and some crazy exhaustion problems slowed me down between Labor Day and Thanksgiving.

A thought for PD re potassium. I've used Morton's Lite salt for probably the last 25 years. They replace the NaCl with KCl to lower sodium content. I am a heavy salt user, and started using the Lite stuff when getting constant criticism from my mom and dietician sis.

Amom, your posts are very helpful. I blame myself for my Ty II diabetes, and ongoing problems. Too heavy a carb diet and not enough exercise. Chronic fatigue to point of exhaustion is my problem today. I cut back on daily glimepiride from 6mg to 4mg after coming in exhausted after only an hour or so of moderate effort. Several times. Blood glucose was way down. Lowest was 64. I'm doing better since taking that step 2 months ago. I see doctor on Monday. I still have no endurance.

I can't replace my wood stove here in CA. The new EPA approved stoves have catalytic converters. You read that right. A catalytic converter on an effing wood stove. Luckily there are few moving parts on my old stove. Their new mandated fuel is pellets, also. With a noisy feed mechanism.

jim nj, The smell of burning leaves and wood is sweet. I will miss it. Deplorable confession time: I looked into replacing wood with coal for heat and discovered coal is even harder to get. Ironic, since my 1916 house was originally heated with coal.

Given the government's track record on nutrition doesn't give me any confidence their pronouncements on "climate change" are any more reliable. Whatever supposed warming we're supposed to be seeing is a variation that is in the noise of temperature change on the geological timeframe. Make sure you get your thyroid studies done too.
If you aren't consuming iodized salt, you may be deficient in iodine as well.

If you've eliminated carbs to cure your Type Two diabetes, you well may be having lots of hypoglycemic episodes (meaning you don't need your meds any more).

Yep. I haven't eliminated the usual carbs, just cut back significantly. I've always been a meat and potatoes eater. Pasta. Pastries. Neighbor who gets very close attention from VA suggested I'm over medicated right now. That's when I cut back on the prescription. Will followup with your suggestions on Monday.
