GUS,
You have a fine young man there and I look forward to meeting your clan.

Sbw,
You are correct. If he had a mirror and a scintilla of sense he’d wipe than asshatty smirk off his face.

GUS

Ok ok, I'll buy his a BEEEEEG mirror. I'm only doing it because he has no self confidence. A mirror can make all the difference.
But then, he's on his own.

sbw

Gus, my son has surprised me by following as the sixth generation (since 1854) to undertake to carry on the family business.

Never pushed him in any direction, but he saw the need (if I can call it that).

His skills as an entrepreneur are better than mine. We compliment each other. And the best thing I can do for him is let him lead.

Whatever happens to the news business, he will succeed and it is a pleasant surprise to me that letting him go allowed him to come home.

His wife has her own profession (Nurse Practitioner and office director) and they live in a home across from us.

Twenty years (Now 30) disappeared between babies and business.

It is always magical. I am so pleased to share in your son’s growth and your joy in it.

GUS

Thank you very very much Sbw. My son is very very much like me. I had a client in from L.A. last week. The client and I, really hit it off, and I enjoyed his company for 2 days of business and driving together. We had beers, I took him to the coolest sites in Milwaukee, and he told me several
times that I should be an Ambassador for Milwaukee.
Then, I took him to my sons' TRAP SHOOTING competition. We were early, and we watched the Coaches give their TOUGH LOVE PEP TALK. I pointed out which boy was my son, and he said.
HE LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE YOU. Anyway, before the boys went out to shoot, the team and those parents and coaches who were there, got into a circle, arm in arm, holding hands, and a TEAM leader said a prayer. Then I introduced him to my handsome son. My boy looked him in the eye and chatted with him like a MAN. It is AWESOME being a FATHER. Nothing I've ever experienced comes close. God bless your son too.

sbw

Thank you. And sweet dreams!

GUS

What will the new MFM crisis be tomorrow.
I'll guess North Korea.

Citizenship question on the census illegal? How so? Oh, that's right we have to look at Trump's motivations. Since he's evil, it must be illegal.

Did you notice also that they won't hire non-citizens as census takers. That's discriminatory, right? How can we count illegals if we don't hire illegals to find them.

As to the scare story that ICE will use the data to hunt down illegals, no, individual data isn't released. Aggregate data is released. The full data on the raw census is held for 70 years before being released. Any genealogist knows this.

>>>Cobb, how does T'Challa give a damn about Black American existential suffering, man? The script writer practically glosses over this. He does so with a completely unsatisfying scene with him chastising his wrongdoing deceased Father who earlier abandoned the Black American kid as well as (presumably) his mother, the (presumably) wife of the former King's brother/spy/WarDog.

All accomplished, mind you, after the prior King, T'Chaka, has killed his brother. And, oh yeah, they are magnanimous enough to come to the 'hood and buy a few buildings, and show off some technology, and maybe show y'all a little sumpin' sumpin' ???<<<

"The truth I chose to omit." He did kill his brother to save another while he was taking him into custody for violating Wakandan laws. I can see where that would be unsatisfying given the fantastic actors in the scene. I also think that it works for the movie-it was T'challa 's resurrection, and within the context of the movie, his-and Wakanda's-redemption. They were turning away from their generations of isolationism (and within the MCU, necessary, given it is going to get pulverized in April).

The other point I would make is that the movie is the most overtly monarchist I've ever seen and Shakespearean in its themes (although I'm not sure of any iambic pentameter[maybe Greek tragedy]). Wakanda is an absolute monarchy sitting on a mountain of the rarest metal on earth ... in reality an absolute monarchy sits upon an ocean of oil and exports terror, and if resources alone defined wealth, South Africa, sitting upon mountains of gold and diamonds could easily rule the world.

I watched it as a continuation of the story leading to Infinity War I and II. I think people have been trying to read way too much into it. It is a fantastic watch-visually just beautiful to see. A talented and beautiful cast, above average scripting, and a blowout budget on design. The most nakedly political of the MCU is Guardians of the Galaxy 2 [surprised the theatrical release wasn't R]-watch the fight scene between Gamora and Nebula a few times, then listen to what Nebula says (in the context of the movie and the scenes before and after). Let it roll around in your head for a while.

"So liberals say asking about citizenship in the census is illegal, but they won't say illegal immigrants being here is illegal?"

jim nj

Rich,

I'm wary of commenting on a movie I haven't seen. From the box office numbers I've seen it must have been very good.

But I do know that there are movies that I liked that I would have tweaked the script if I could have.

Especially most of the Vietnam war movies I've seen except, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Were_Soldiers_Once%E2%80%A6_and_Young

RG's comments after he saw and extolled the movie, but would have liked script changes, was to me, an interesting viewpoint, and I got it.

Reading the RG vs. Cobb blog, was for me, listening into a conversation among two bruthers, who know and respect each other.

RG, correct me if I'm wrong, but Cobb seems to be a friend of yours.

And it reminds me of conversations, and arguments, that I had with black friends when I was younger. We'd argue honestly and often be surprised where we agreed or disagreed. It was amazing how often we could agree on the "Truth," and we changed each others opinions.

My experience is that if you argue honestly with a friend or a contender, you both come away smarter.

RG, again correct if I'm wrong, but you seem to have been unable to get a friend to acknowledge, or even engage in discussing your viewpoint, by not even re-considering his own viewpoint.

Personally, that annoys the sh-t out of me, I'm engaged, I'm arguing logically, and you're not listening to me, you're not responding, and when you do respond to me, it's not my argument you refute, but some useless talking point you've memorized that has nothing to do with the argument at hand.
You're losing the logical argument, so you have to rely upon some silly tangent, to turn it into an ad hominen attack. That's when I bail. We're no longer discussing the same thing. They're in defensive mode and no longer able to argue the logic.

And again apologies to RG if I read this wrong, but I got the impression that Cobb wouldn't even engage RG's argument, but came up with a counter-argument that in no way addressed RG's points.

I only get that upset when I'm arguing with a long-time friend who's ignoring waht I'm saying.

Oh SBW, I understand what is going on from your earlier explanations, and you did a great job again.

The question is why the inflammatory response is triggered in the first place--did something get through a leaky bowel that that looks like a sequence on her optic nerve? Is it still getting through?? I respond to chicken pox virus, but my antibody titers are low unless it reappears.
(why Plant Paradox--the lectin connection. Seal that bowel!)

The degree of the response is why they have used steroids, and what benefit eating a low inflammation diet might offer--tamp down the inflammation.

Not promising a cure, friend---but ?10% better, 30%?---you won't turn that down, I'm sure.

Me too.

I've been taking a lot of Advil to suppress what I thought were arthritic pains. Recently I've been trying to cut back on Advil by substituting Turmeric with Curcumin to reduce inflammation. That approach seems to be working. I'm down from what had been 1000mg/day to 400-600mg/day, and have been hoping to drop down to 200mg which I'd continue with my regular AdvilPM taken with 5mg Melatonin at bedtime.

Your thoughts are always appreciated.

It seems to me that North Korea getting rid of its nukes and missiles is a GOOD thing for the entire region, particularly Japan.

It''s also a good thing for the US if we don't have to garrison a huge number of troops there and can pull some of our navy back.

Letting Xi get some credit in this gives him clout over the OTHER power in the region, Russia. That is a good thing, in my opinion.

I'm rushing off to a doctor's appointment this morning but, Rich -- loved that musical selection and thank you for that Black Panther / Marvel Comics explanation! My go to guy on all things comics was so thrilled by Black Panther that it was useless talking to him about the film in anything but glowing, possibly the best movie ever terms.

And Jim, yes on Cobb. I am a bit frustrated he chose to view it simply as a superhero movie. He's a fraternity brother and years ago put together the "Conservative Brotherhood" online. So, we're essentially online friends like many of you here. I did meet him in California a few years ago and know he's smart as hell.

But the Black Panther movie is somewhat analogous to the election of Obama in the black community -- don't even *think* about criticism. ANY criticism. And to a certain extent, I get it. It appears he has moved on to another phase of his family and professional life and I'm cool with that but he's such an interesting thinker, it would have been fascinating to see him chew on this a bit more.

Posted by: GUS | March 27, 2018 at 11:20 PM

What intrigues me is this: why did they drop the question in 1950? Angelo Codevilla wrote a great piece in the Claremont Review of Books, The Tipping Point:

https://www.claremont.org/crb/article/the-tipping-point/

His review compares two recently released books that revolve around the Korean War and its immediate aftermath. The one by Arthur Herman (Douglas MacArthur: American Warrior) is generally favorable to MacArthur and the one by H.W. Brands (The General vs. the President: MacArthur and Truman at the Brink of Nuclear War) is clearly on Truman’s side.

Here's Codevilla:

Two new books by popular historians Arthur Herman and H.W. Brands show that the clash between President Harry Truman and General Douglas MacArthur over the Korean war’s course was the tipping point between two eras of American statecraft. The clash is one episode in Herman’s biography; it is Brands’ focus.

And my curiosity re the dropping of the citizenship question from the census:

By 1950, polite society—which excluded the American people’s vast majority—was well-nigh unanimous that victory and peace, as well as the very notion of an overriding, peculiarly American national interest, were concepts that belonged to the age of the dinosaurs.

Did that sort of mindset prevail on the citizenship question as part of the census? Does anyone have a clue? Codevilla's conclusion is definitely thought-provoking:

The November 1950 elections had repudiated Democratic foreign policy. Democrats retained narrow majorities on Capitol Hill, but lost 28 seats in the House and five in the Senate. On March 20, 1951, Douglas MacArthur had answered a private letter from Republican Representative Joseph Martin, the House minority leader, seeking his views on opening a Chinese Nationalist front against China’s effort in Korea. On April 5, Martin read MacArthur’s answer from the House floor. The Truman Administration chose to see this as something akin to a military coup, and fired MacArthur in the name of civilian supremacy. In fact, however, MacArthur had become a clear and present danger not to the U.S. Constitution, but to the preferences and reputations of the Democratic Party’s foreign policy apparatchiks, and to Truman’s ego—domestic politics writ small.

MacArthur returned from Korea to a conquering hero’s reception: ticker-tape parades and a speech to a joint session of Congress. The pledge he made and kept to “just fade away” belied the contention that he had tried to usurp the Constitution, and bolstered the two warnings he left his fellow citizens. First, “In war, there is no substitute for victory.” Forgetting something so very basic had been no mere mistake, but a symptom of moral decay. Hence his other warning: “History fails to record a single precedent in which nations subject to moral decay have not passed into political and economic decline. There has been either a spiritual awakening to overcome the moral lapse, or a progressive deterioration leading to ultimate national disaster.”

* * *

Hmmmmmmmmm . . . .

We're living in a historical moment right now, one that is putting a period on the end of a sentence that may have begun, in part, with the November 1950 elections . . . and the earlier decision to not include the citizenship question on the 1950 census.

this old quote seems timely concerning American citizenship (the census) & also voting (voter ID & clean rolls).

"Gay marriage was never the issue. It was always marriage."...

"And you deconstruct marriage until it means a physical relationship between any group of people for any duration. And that is the opposite of what marriage is."...

"You can abolish democracy by banning the vote or you can do it by letting people vote as many times as they want, by letting small children and foreigners vote, until no one sees the point in counting the votes or taking the process seriously. The same goes for marriage or any other institution. You can destroy it by outlawing it or by eliminating its meaningfulness until it becomes so open that it is absurd."

I took off my watch when I moved to NC in 1992 and haven't worn one since.

James D.,

We don't know that they are NOT investigating.

Sessions runs things by the book, so we don't hear a lot until, like the sex cult, there are raids and indictments.

We will see.

Now the SJWs are attacking Pierre Marquette for being a racist exploiter-- he hired a native guide.

That article is also full of silly innuendo, trying to suggest scandal when there doesn't seem to be anything improper. Adelson gave Pruitt some useful information, and has no financial stake.

jimmyk,

I didn't read the article because I don't have a subscription, so thanks for reviewing it!

More on that murder in Paris of the 85-year-old holocaust survivor, from the NYT:

By Monday, two suspects had been arrested in the murder of Ms. Knoll: both young men in their 20s, one of whom was a neighbor. “One of them had known her for a long time,” Mr. Kalifat [a Jewish community representative] said. “He had friendly relations with her.”

The Paris prosecutor’s office declined to characterize the origins of the two people; Mr. Kalifat said the principal suspect was of North African origin.

Of course.

The opposite of what happened for eight years of [Redacted for Lent] Curious when the estimated or preliminary numbers were always higher than the actual. Shouldn't there be some consequences for being wrong so consistently to make one administration look good and another look bad? Is anybody surprised by this?

Epic fail for CNN. I told you guys they absolutely do not understand us. I am sure they thought these women would be horrified. HA!

disband the police, and the 40 cals go missing from a safe. Note, the combination to the safe hasn't changed in decades.

WH says Pres Trump has signed S. 188, the "Eliminating Government-funded Oil-painting Act," which prohibits the use of Federal funds for the costs of painting portraits of federal officials including the Pres and VP.
======================
Knoller also points out that it's the E.G.O. Act. LOL!

Looking at the replies to Knoller's tweet, the anti-Trump people now think this is a terrible bill and an "attack on the arts." I am not making that up.

Davod

""Eliminating Government-funded Oil-painting Act,"

How petty. Don't they know Trump will be able to pay for his own portrait.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

I daresay most cabinet officials and senators could as well, Davod.

Mrs. Pence could do the VP's for free. She's an accomplished watercolorist.

I am sure taxpayers would like to avoid paying for the portait of the Head of the IRS. LOL!

Spurious correlation about watches:

Reservation NDN tells a half-breed FBI agent in "Thunderheart"....

"Old Man says watches'll give you stomach cancer."

I only have one watch and it gets wound every other day and set back into a mahogany box: Paw's jeweled Bulova watch with a second hand. Gift to him from his older brother when he joined the USN in 1952.

It's the envy of College Man Kid who has several of those big-faced time pieces so in vogue today.

A different world.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Kevlar Kid,

That reminds me of a funny story. My youngest sister has a love of all things retro, so she bought an old black dial telephone which she had hooked up at her previous house.

My nieces were over there when they were in grade school, about 15 years ago, and needed to call home. THEY DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO OPERATE IT! She showed them how, but even after being shown, when they dialed each number they left their fingers IN the dial until it returned to its resting position.

We have laighed about that many times over the years. Of course, it was because they had never seen anything but push button phones. LOL!

I don’t believe it, Henry. Nobody wants a .40 cal.

The Infamous Ignatz

I used to have a Rolex but I didn't think anyone still rolled through all those pages just to find a phone number.
