If you are aware of this recent story about the CDC and defensive gun use you are either well-read or a right-wing nut-job (I say this as one who lately has no time to read):
CDC Survey On Defensive Gun Use Was Never Publicized
By Virginia Kruta
Defensive gun use (DGU) happens more regularly in the United States than gun crimes, according to data the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) never publicized.
Florida State University criminologist Gary Kleck has been arguing that point for a quarter of a century, saying that his own research led him to believe that DGU was far more prevalent than gun-control advocates claim.
The CDC’s data, collected a few years after Kleck’s survey, appears to corroborate his findings, Reason.com reported. The question asked in the CDC survey addressed the use or threatened use of a firearm to deter a crime. “During the last 12 months, have you confronted another person with a firearm, even if you did not fire it, to protect yourself, your property, or someone else?”
No spoilers here! But lets cut over to Reason.com:
CDC surveys in the 1990s, never publicly reported, indicate nearly 2.5 million defensive uses of guns a year. That matches the results of Gary Kleck's controversial surveys, and it indicates more defensive than offensive uses of guns.
Lest you wonder, yes - in 2013, following an executive order from Obama, the CDC did some studies on gun violence, including a look at defensive gun use ("DGU"). And yes, the report got some attention - here is Will Saletan at Slate in a review of the findings:
7. Guns are used for self-defense often and effectively. “Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per year … in the context of about 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms in 2008,” says the report. The three million figure is probably high, “based on an extrapolation from a small number of responses taken from more than 19 national surveys.” But a much lower estimate of 108,000 also seems fishy, “because respondents were not asked specifically about defensive gun use.” Furthermore, “Studies that directly assessed the effect of actual defensive uses of guns (i.e., incidents in which a gun was 'used' by the crime victim in the sense of attacking or threatening an offender) have found consistently lower injury rates among gun-using crime victims compared with victims who used other self-protective strategies.”
So as of 2013 the CDC was willing to include a ballpark that encompassed their 1990s estimates.
And why is this news? Well, in one sense it is not - as best I can tell, and I am relying on their search engine, the flailing NY Times has mentioned neither the latest revelations nor the 2013 report on defensive gun use. FWIW, I did find this March 2018 piece calling for more CDC studies. The intro is oddly off-kilter:
Guns in the home protect families.
For decades, that has been an essential part of the National Rifle Association’s mantra in defending firearms ownership, repeated at congressional hearings, in advertisements and on T-shirts.
Dr. Mark Rosenberg, who once headed research on firearm violence at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wondered if there was any evidence backing the N.R.A.’s assertion.
“So we looked at the question, does having a gun at home protect your family or not?” Dr. Rosenberg recalled.
He was amazed by the answer. The landmark study in 1993 showed that bringing a gun into the home puts everyone at much greater risk.
“They were saying if you want to keep your family safe, if you are a real man, you will have a gun at home,” Dr. Rosenberg said. “Bringing the gun not only didn’t protect you, it put you at much, much greater risk.”
To this day, gun rights advocates dispute the study’s findings. The N.R.A. pushed Congress in 1995 to stop the C.D.C. from spending taxpayer money on research that advocated gun control. Congress then passed the Dickey Amendment in 1996, and cut funding that effectively ended the C.D.C.’s study of gun violence as a public health issue.
Well. No mention by the Times of the concern that the process will be politicized and the "wrong" results buried. Their national debate on guns never seems to wonder off script.
However, the Todd Frankel of the WaPO did address this in 2015 - his gist - the 2013 study reviewed the current literature (their high-end defensive gun use statistics seem to come from Kleck) but since it called for more study we can't really discuss it. Uh huh.
ERRATA: As an illustration here is the last month's Google News top hits for "Centers for Disease Control defensive gun use". Good luck finding any legacy media at all.
And continuing...

On TM's topic, do they ever look at crime stats in areas felons might expect armed victims vs unarmed? They do tend to hit schools instead of police stations after all.

So in the car Hannity was on and he and his associates noted that Comey has hired his law professor/leaker buddy and Fitzgerald to represent him. I immediately questioned his professor buddy's status, as he is a party to any age that develops. This is deep state dirty pool that once again just confirms many people's suspicions that the game is rigged.
Come's sworn statements before Congress will be used against him in any litigation as well. Arrogant and stupid don't mix well.
Hannity was saying that the IG's report has further bombshells. I think slowly, slowly, the worm is turning on the establishment.

Who did the background checks on Comey's butt-buddy Professor?
Probably nobody. Reverend Queasy had to get him a badge to wear when he was traipsing around looking at data with Jimbo just to get him past security. Professor Fuzznuts was doubtlessly looking at data he had no clearance to view but it was in the company of Mr Blue Shirt Revolution.

"A GENTLER, KINDER, MORE INCLUSIVE KILLING FORCE"
By Tim Blair in Australia.
"Miranda Devine deals with Lt General Angus Campbell, change commander [Chief of the Defence Force], leader of the woke brigade and the man who hates the ghost who walks:
Try to understand where Campbell, AO, DSC, no armchair general like his predecessor but a seasoned former SAS squadron commander, might be coming from.
Campbell’s first act after being announced as new Chief of Defence last week was to ban Australian soldiers from displaying “symbols of death” or iconography glorifying war …Campbell’s edict has gone down like a lead balloon, especially with those Australian veterans who served in Task Force Spartan in Afghanistan in 2006, a joint endeavour with the United States’ 10th Mountain Division. Are their JT Spartan caps now verboten?
And what about the RAAF’s C-27J Spartan Squadron operating the C-27J Spartan battlefield airlifter out of Richmond air base? What do they do about the “Spartan” on their Squadron patch?
Maybe Campbell will change it to this.
The US Infantry has a Spartan combat brigade. Canadian military drills are named “Spartan Warrior”. The British use “Spartan” armoured vehicles.
Pirate skulls is one thing, but banning the Spartan mythology embedded in modern militaries is control freakery beyond the power of any general."

More about the 4D chess: I think it is entirely planned that this occurred (I'm talking about Kanye West today) on the very day when Emmanuel Macron gave an address in Congress showing genuine friendship (Trump-Macron, USA-France, etc.) may be had when real disagreements remain.
The combined symbolism of this should not be underestimated.
Years ago a very popular R&B group, En Vogue, had a hit called FREE YOUR MIND. It's a simplistic song, but then again it isn't. Segments of Black America have been trying to break out of an identity poltics prison for years. Today, this song seems especially relevant.
Free Your Mind
En Vogue

[Intro]
Prejudice, wrote a song about it
Like to hear it? Here it go
Free your mind
[Verse 1]
Cindy: I wear tight clothing, high heeled shoes
It doesn't mean that I'm a prostitute, no no
Dawn: I like rap music, wear hip hop clothes
That doesn't mean that I'm out sellin' dope, no no no
Terry: Oh my forgive me for having straight hair, no
It doesn't mean there's another blood in my heir, yeah yeah
Maxine: I might date another race or color
It doesn't mean I don't like my strong black brothers
[Pre-Chorus]
Mmm-dah, mmm-dah, mmm-dah, mmm-dah
Why oh why must it be this way?
Mmm-dah, mmm-dah, mmm-dah, mmm-dah
Before you can read me you gotta learn how to see me, I said
[Chorus]
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
[Verse 2]
Cindy: So I'm a sista, buy things with cash
That really doesn't mean that all my credit's bad, oh
Dawn: So why dispute me and waste my time?
Because you really think the price is high for me
Terry: I can't look without being watched, and oh
You rang my buy before I made up my mind, OW!
Maxine: Oh now attitude, why even bother?
I can't change your mind, you can't change my color
[Pre-Chorus]
Mmm-dah, mmm-dah, mmm-dah, mmm-dah
Why oh why must it be this way?
Mmm-dah, mmm-dah, mmm-dah, mmm-dah
Before you can read me you gotta learn how to see me, I said
[Chorus]
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind
[Break]
[Pre-Chorus]
Mmm-dah, mmm-dah, mmm-dah, mmm-dah
Why oh why must it be this way?
Before you can read me you gotta learn how to see me, I said
[Chorus]
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
FREE YOUR MIND!

Jut got a nice jolt from the past. Having recently switched from MSFT to Apple I got a real deal on a 2012 lightly used Mac. Thank God it came with a CD/DVD player/reader.
iTunes is one of Satan's creations. I have @ 600GB of music including some very rare stuff. iTunes refuses to recognize my classic iPod, my music that was on the PC or my external drives. F you iTunes!
So I am loading a bunch of my CD's back the old fashioned way and I found a post mortem anthology of Steve Goodman's best. I met him and a bunch of other folkies back when I was 13-14 years old at the club not too far from home, the Main Point, in Bryn Mawr. They used to hang out between sets out back and I would talk with them. Jimmy Buffett, Bill Withers, John Prine and Steve were the ones I remember.
I never knew that Prine co wrote "The I don't Know Where I'm Going But I'm Going in No Hurry Blues." Prime refused writer's credit, so Goodman bought him a Wurlitzer jukebox.
Steve was a charming, wonderful man taken far too early.
P.S. Apple spellcheck sucks. Had to re-type Prine's spelling each time.

Here's the deal Daddy. Richman was given the FBI GOVERNMENT OWNED MEMO'S by COMEY, for the purpose of having them leaked to The New York Slimes.
Either Comey is guilty of providing the news media/Richman with the GOVT OWNED MEMO'S or RICHMAN is. Comey then told us that RICHMAN is his personal attorney. NOT A CHANCE. Why? because COMEY also told us that RICHMAN was hired as an unpaid SPECIAL EMPLOYEE, thus precluding him from working against the govt, and for COMEY.
Comey is a bag o'douche, and he ABSOLUTELY needs JAIL TIME.

”It seems the Greeks still hate the Germans with the heat of a thousand suns.”
This is the truth! My wife’s parents are from an island in the Dodecanese, the southeast Greek island group that includes Rhodes and Kos, bordering Turkey.
If you ever watch “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”, you get a sense of what it was like. The islands had flip-flopped in and out of Italian control before the war and at the beginning, then the Germans took control in 1943 when the Italians switched sides.
The Germans were very brutal. No love lost between them even today. Hated just behind the Turks.

Many years ago we were in Crete and drove up into the mountains one afternoon. As we headed off someone--I think the hotel concierge-- told me the people there were friendly but armed. A few years earlier, he said, a German visitor went into s grocery there and asked in perfect Greek for something. The shopkeeper asked him where he'd learned Greek and the German replied he'd been stationed there during the war. The grocer took out a gun from behind the counter and shot the terrorist dead.

Flying back to Paris.
From Brigitte and I, thank you @realDonaldTrump, @FLOTUS for hosting us on the occasion of your first State visit. Unforgettable memories and a great honor to our very special relationship.

Re Hiroshima, it was the leading naval facility in the south, that hadn't been bombed.

On Friday we do a straight shot from here to Taipei, which is excellent news since they make good Martini's at "The 7 Scholars" Lounge (Verandah)

But the large jar of big Martini Olives they keep behind the Hotel bar strictly for me is empty, following my last visit, so I'm like Humphrey Bogart's father in Sabrina, holding an empty Olive jar and desperate (Ledge)

But I'm confident in my ability to smuggle another large jar into country so I hustled down to the local SafeWay to replenish (Verandah)
But sad to say the large jug of Green Martini Olive's with Blue Cheese inserts was sold out (Ledge)

But I can get by in Taipei with the ones that have Garlic inserts (Verandah)

But I had planned to sneak 2 extra jugs of the one's with the Blue Cheese inserts thru China into Japan, for my Belgium Buddy who owns the Jet Lag Club, since he's a Blue Cheese freak (Ledge)

So I'll have to beg sympathy and stick with Saki and Beer for my Narita layover, and that may just be enough payoff for him to let me walk his dog, "Inop." (Verandah!)

"Apple spellcheck sucks. Had to re-type Prine's spelling each time."
You can tell it to learn a spelling.
Double click on the word you've written, then right click (or control click) on it and you should see an option "Learn Spelling." Click it to add your spelling to spellcheck/dictionary.
If you do NOT see that option, then slide down to "Spelling and Grammar" in the contextual menu and click "Show Spelling and Grammar." You'll find the "Learn" option in the subsequent pop-up dialog.

I refuse to get the app that allows me to check in on Scott Adams to see if he can make a point quickly and concisely. Here is a YouTube version of the above mentioned video:
I made it about 3min then I skipped to the 5min mark. Then I gave up.
He isn't my style of speaker so I won't dismiss whatever the content of the link provided for others. I cannot watch him for 20 min.
Does someone have a brief summary of this and why it is so poignant?

You’re not allowed to assume someone’s gender but you’re allowed to assume their Political affiliation?
Wow, I'm starting to believe Kanye might be one of us, despite his history. Kind of like Roseanne.
Is that truepundit story at 10:55 for real? Pretty exciting development if so.
In both cases (Kanye, truepundit) I think "trust but verify" might be in order.

TK, he argues that some things never were achieved because people persuaded themselves othing like what they wanted to happen could happen, but Trump said forget about that and went and did it. And now people like Kanye are starting to express the same thought--we can stand up and just do it.Revving up he economy, smashing ISIS, getting NoKo to stop its nuclear program, winning the presidency.

So it a Tony Robbins type of "you can do it" observation?

Well there is reAl audacity, to tackle so many projects at once.

I remember reading the Trump story about the ice rink. In that article either he was quoted as saying, or someone said they heard him say, "You can get anything done through the sheer force of will."
That is the attitude I voted for, so I may not be as surprised as Adams is.

working on catch up at the momement, but this CH comment (and the other comments this is in response to) ...
>>>And has crashed some televised award events to badmouth Taylor Swift. Maybe he's legit in this or maybe he's playing DJT; who knows. He's saying stuff which would be hard to realistically walk back so I'd guess legit; but seemingly at times as crazy as a shithouse rat counts for something too.

My spidey sense is tingling. There might be something ugly about to come out and the cultural battle lines (in the African American community especially) are being draw. He might be batshit crazy, but he's also and entertainer and can read an audience.
In re: Swift, I thought he had recently made a statement of some sort. I think if he were to apologize for it she'd be gracious.

the item that stuck with me is that he asked why were they using an engineering firm that builds ice rinks in Florida ... a rather different challenge.
