It was when I was wondering how on earth starving North Koreans could remain abjectly devoted to the Kim regime, that I realized that North Korea was closer to the historic Korean model than South Korea, particularly in regard to knowing and accepting your place without complaint.

JMH,

Fascinating point, and fascinating to be reading that at the exact instant on my TV I'm watching the North Korean leader crossing over into South Korea. Thanks very much for the history lesson. Much appreciated, and exactly why I was asking. What a great diversity of expertise we have here at TM's terrific blog.

So thanos the villain in the latest avenger film is a contraction of thanatos which means death in Greek, also part of a title of the last walker Percy which we discussed in an earlier thread. The import of that name will become quiet clear, and paradoxically not. It did not top off xarlseid from the all too forgotten justice league film.

This is a speculative thread about what Mueller is doing. I am putting it here because:

1. It is heavily documented
2. I am tired of people acting like I just live in some sort of fantasyland.

Now, this gal could be wrong, but it seems to me that people should at least read what she has to say. It ALSO might explain why Chuck Grassley let that bill protecting Mueller go forward.

JimNorCal

Yeah, makes no obvious sense for Grassley to support that one. But sometimes there are procedural reasons, for example didn't SC Justice Roberts switch from No to Yes (for a decision the baddies were winning) in order to write the chief opinion?

GUS

Daddy 1:05 Jeff Sessions has rejoined the game.

ABADMAN!! Hola.....HOCUS POCUS........great memories my friend.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

JimNorCal,

The only comment I heard Grassley make about this is that he had agreed to do this in exchange for getting something else done and he was keeping his word.

The fact is that it would have to be scheduled by McConnell and get a full Senate vote and then go to the House. I doubt Trump is going to fire Mueller, anyway.

It might be that Grassley letting this get out of committee is how we got Pompeo and Grenell confirmed.

I have seen no indication that Grassley is a weasel so I figure he knows what he's doing.

I do think people should read that unrolled thread I posted above. There is a lot of stuff in it, including that Manaford might have been a plant, which goes back to my theory that U jeep harping on, that this was a plan to frame Trump for after Hillary won.

Kevlar Kid,

I had saved both of your posts on slavery and attempted to address them in my comments. I should have addressed them directly, but I answered them with my understanding without directly referencing your posts. I HAVE EDITED YOUR POSTS. Hopefully with out distorting your intent.
-------------
"Those who hold slavery as a defining characteristic of modern American society show considerable ignorance of American History, World History, Economic History, Political History, and, probably, just about everything else."

I heard that above-quoted statement too many times to count since beginning as a teacher in 1978.
-------
You discuss your classroom experience.
-----------
I'd ask the proponent for 500 words to buttress the judgement.

The American Slave Trade is one of many hundreds of defining features of a now long-past past which must be understood by our citizens. Otherwise, we end up where we are: in pedantic labyrinths of Barneyesque diatribes about "respect" etc.

The American Republic fought a civil war over it, the blooodiest conflict for the Nation up until World War II's American body count took the prize (and not by much.)

The Civil War made us into an "us". And the Slave Trade economy was at least in the outer ring of reasons the war was fought.

The impact on most families i've known and continue to know isn't that they want reparations: they want to know who they are and where they came from.

Understanding the American Slave Trade was their first order of business when they took me on in support of their quest.
--------
As a genealogist, I understand this. "Micro" history is just as important as "macro" history. Who we descend from is very important as that is how we come to understand our own "Micro" history. Not the GRAND events, but how our ancestors participated in or were affected by the Grand events.
-----------

They KNOW they aren't slaves, nor do they fall any longer for the 'black hucksters' who used to incite them over the "persistent effects of Slavery in America." That's all bull shitake.

Posted by: Kevlar Kid | April 25, 2018 at 04:10 PM

It used to wear me down, believe me.

Once my livlihood working in "hire ed" across "color lines" made it necessary for me to let go of the emotional burden "it" can impose so I could teach and reach, while not huffing the neo-marxist "crack pipe" of revisionist history, it's become much easier to investigate horrific events like the bombing of Hiroshima by way of example.

Once I got past the chorus of distracting voices that were politicizing human history to use it as currency to dismiss their politicized opponents in nearly every setting imaginable (a neo-marxist tactic), I developed effective weapons to keep them out of anything constructive.

Posted by: Kevlar Kid | April 25, 2018 at 07:26 PM

"understanding how hard it was for many people here, not just slaves."

That's kum ba ya in one of its most insidious forms.
----------
I'm sorry but I'm not following here.
----------

"How hard it was" for many was predicated, mitigated and complicated to significant and varying degrees on the backs of enslaved Black people.

My statement/declaration has precise historical roots. Bacon's Rebellion. And the corollaries played out for nearly 3 centuries.
--------
I had never heard of Bacon's Rebellion before. Interesting.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacon%27s_Rebellion

Pull quote: "A thousand Virginians of all classes and races rose up in arms against Berkeley, attacking Indians, chasing Berkeley from Jamestown, Virginia, and ultimately torching the capital." [this in response to unanswered Indian attacks on colonists]
-----------

"How hard it was for many people here not just slaves" was the default deflector/distraction in nearly every classroom I haunted with my classes---- due to years of conventional American schooling.

The net effect of superimposing that kind of generality on intellectual development and inquiries by young people is to enforce a false notion of equality. It was said in my classrooms over 20 years something like so: "I mean afterall, if I find something hard and YOU find something hard, then it means we both have the same experience: It's Hard. So we're "equal in that way."

And so... heh?
--------------
Okay. Equivalancies are not neccesarily equivalent or relevant.
------------

It would take weeks to focus on content and skills formation to drill underneath that kind of "understanding." I say that kind because there isn't any synthesis required to arrive at that generalization during their years of miseducation in "social" studies (what has now become the intellectual fiefdom of the "credentialed" Gramscian stooges on the Left.)
---------
Do I understand you to mean that you were trying to instill critical thinking, instead of spoon-fed pablum?
------

No disrespect. I fail to see value in the "how hard it was" generalization to use that go to "educational" precept that will in any way help fellow Americans COMPREHEND, especially the young, how we got here and why.
------
I don't understand this. Wouldn't comparisons be useful? Enlightening? "[H]ow we got here and why." Isn't more information useful? I'm lost here.
---------

This approach focused on knowledge and compentency acquisition by demonstration to further that aim:

What did it mean to be a plantation slave?
What did it mean to be a small farmer's slave?
What did it mean to be an escaped slave?

Can "you" explain those complexities accurately in your own words, orally and in writing, through debate, extemporaneous speech, and formal written examination? (Comprehension) Demonstrate.
------
I don't follow here. What reference points were you using. Additional reading? Or imagination. Was this an exercise in imagination? I'm lost here.
---------

Can "you" offer theories based on your comprehension of the issues from different aspects of the history learned to explain anomalies, scholarly impasses, absence of evidence, and controversies? (Synthesis) Demonstrate.

Can "you" summarize critiques offered from your peers about your theoretical offerings and reach conclusions about each? (Judgement and New Knowledge)Demonstrate.
--------
Still lost. Some kind of debate analysis? Critical thinking? Wisdom of the masses?
----------

Add to the slavery content of the course, our investigations of:

What it meant to be a Plains tribe pre-1835 and post 1861, a Southwestern, a Haudenosanee tribe, a Northwest tribe, a Southeastern tribe, a California tribe?
(Same "can you" requirements apply)

What does it mean, what did it mean to be a "reservation Indian?
(Same "can you" requirements apply)

What did it mean to be a Mission Indian?
(Same "can you" requirements apply)
--------
Okay, valid for not including the Native American experience, as to how we got where we are.

Threadkiller,

As Captain Hate says, Mueller has a history of abusing prosecutorial power before he became head of the FBI.

I was willing to entertain the idea that he had been offered a chance at redemption, and the thread I posted in the wee hours made a good case from the timeline and actions that happened on it.

However, seeing that the cabal at the FBI were manipulating who got selected to work for the special counsel pretty much removes any possibility that this was true.

I want more publicity on those statements in the texts and emails by Strzok, and I want someone to grill Mueller in a public hearing.

I think Sessions has the right to stop this entire thing given the public evidence.

As far as Manafort, it seems to me that he was inserted to introduce the collusion narrative. I wonder why it was that Trump got rid of him - did Flynn find out through back channels?

More important than anything, is WHY this seditious effort was undertaken after Trump won the election. I cannot help but think that there is something so bad that all parties were united in what seems to me a treasonous action (Brennan, Clinton, Obama, Comey, Lynch, Clapper, etc. plus the second-tier FBI creeps.)

What was so horrible that they would take these actions? That's the million-dollar question.

Trump may be making peace in Korea, but the local news is still disgruntled over a bar name.

A Milwaukee-area bar called “Walk Her Inn, Drag Her Out” is stirring controversy in the #MeToo era because critics say the name promotes sexual assault.

Good morning, JOM.

This is for all dog owners, lovers and animal behavior experts.

As you may know, we have 3 beagles. Two males, and one female. The male beagles are 6 years, 3 months old and brothers (litter mates) but months apart being with us. The first one has an issue with the second one in that everytime I give them a chewy or toy, he goes to his place and puts it down but doesn't chew it. The other guy goes to his place and promptly chews it, eats it.

The first one is waiting for his brother to come to his place to steal it. Ends up growling him away. Everytime for any toy, chewy or treat. Its like a sado-masochist ballet. The first one waits for the second one so he can tell him to bug off. Same with a special stuffed Beagle doll he has - we call the doll, Junior - and its the same act.

Anyone else with littermates see the same behavior?

Look forward to meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany today. So much to discuss, so little time! It will be good for both of our great countries!

"South Korea’s Foreign Minister telling CNN that “clearly credit goes to President Trump” is priceless."

It gets better. The FM said it to Christiane Amanpour!

When you hear of people wanting to make 'mental health' a school priority, this is what they actually mean, not helping the nicholas cruz's of the world.

Donald Trump convinced North Korea and China he was serious about bringing about change.

We're not there yet, but if this happens, President Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

Lindsey is starting to realize that Trump knows what he's doing.

I love General Mattis:

Mattis told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the U.S. has a deconfliction line with Russia to ensure that the two countries can communicate in order to avoid direct conflict with one another in Syria. He said that a group of "irregular forces" were in conflict with U.S. forces, and once it was ascertained that those forces were not Russian regulars, Mattis directed a counterattack.

"The Russian high command in Syria assured us it was not their people, and my direction to the chairman was for the force, then, to be annihilated," Mattis said. "And it was."

I find it funny Max Boot blocked me. He's just upset that I think he's a simpering geebo with delusions of manhood.
