As they used to say in the old horsey days: Home and Hosed. 3341 miles in six travel days plus two conference days and one test day. And stopping for coffee or dinner with old friends and/or family every travel day, except for the awesome, nearly full day with Caro and her new beau.

Loved shooting Ed's Wilson Combat. Way too long between range sessions. Next time we will bring our own toys, except for those tragically lost in the canoeing accident. :)

Saw about every flavor of WX out there. Still maintained mid-70s to low 90s most of the way. Loved the proper highway etiquette across MT where my ole state-mates never hogged the left lane even when running 90+ in their jacked up pickumups.

The worst behavior was noted maybe a hunnert times: coming up on a cluster of cars in the left lane because of a semi in the right lane. That part normal. so one guy in the right lane doing maybe 2 mph more than the truck gets worked up about being trapped behind the truck while everyone else gets by, as expected. SO the right lane guy cuts in front of the very last guy in the left lane (usually us) instead of waiting about ten seconds more to get behind the whole group. It was insidious.

Essentially all the miles driven were in the Rocky Mountain West. Seeing a thousand variations of what I grew up in, left me pondering a few natural mysteries: I remember Black Willow and Cottonwood trees around all the ranches I lived/worked on. What became overwhelming was the realization that every creek, stream, and river has them over about a 2MM sq. mile area. So, how does that work? Presumably things have been pretty stable for about 10K years in this part of the world, so some sort of migratory mechanism is in play. I recall that Aspens are nearly a single organism and correspondingly, they tend to propagrate in continuous batches, but the others are very thinly propagated along creek banks and it seems unlikely for them to meander down one creek to a larger stream and then back the next small creek. And by what means? I don't think there is some nummy thing the birds eat and then shit along the stream bank.

One other thing: when you get out in the boonies, you occasionally see 'yard art' that is repurposed junk like old farm implements, cars on blocks, etc. Sometimes many acres of it. Except in Utah. I assume the Mormons frown on that behavior.

Dave (in MA)

Iggy,

As a kid, I never really noticed the mature BW except that one of the old cowboys pointed them out. On this trip, they were starting to brighten up compared to the CW which were still dormant. That made them obvious. Most places they may have been ~10 pct. of the total mature growth except where ranchers deliberately planted them along lanes leading to the main ranch buildings. Given that, it didn’t seem like Aspen or others where they were contiguous.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

This is pretty funny, even if, like me, you are a music neanderthal: From Althouse.

From "Organ Grinding/When the audience revolted at Carnegie Hall" by Sudip Bose — about a performance of this Steve Reich piece at Carnegie Hall in 1973:

"... the agitation growing over the course of the piece’s 15-plus minutes. At one point, an older woman approached the stage, took off a shoe, and banged it on the stage, imploring the ensemble—which included [the composer Steve] Reich and [the conductor Michael] Tilson Thomas—to stop. Someone else sprinted down an aisle, yelling, 'All right! I confess!' Other aggrieved patrons simply left. With the commotion escalating, the musicians could barely hear each other play, forcing Tilson Thomas to call out the beats over the noise. This was no easy task... The musicians continued on, and after it was all over, the audience exploded—with plenty of bravos to counter the detractors’ boos. When the musicians walked off the stage, Reich was, as he remembered it, 'as white as a sheet.' Yet Tilson Thomas was practically gleeful: 'I said, Steve, this is the greatest thing that’s happened. Nothing like this has happened since the premiere of The Rite of Spring. For sure, by tomorrow, everyone in the world is going to know about you and your music. And that’s just what happened.'"

Back in 1973 at Carnegie Hall. "Four Organs and Maracas":)

Morning JiB,

This week I have training so I am reading FAR regs, Aircraft systems, and Emergency procedures. Ughh. Most boring stuff on the planet. It's the one part of the job I won't miss when I retire. I've got 3 new check outs from the Library in the book bag but haven't cracked a page yet; Dalrymple on the Kohi-Noor Diamond, a book on Consciousness that Oliver Sacks was working on when he died, and a new popular science one on Gravity.

I read somewhere that "fear" translates better as "respect".

Hoyden I've seen that as well and I've heard Dennis Prager, who frequently extrapolates on the importance of that verse, using both terms. He speaks and reads Hebrew so I defer to his translation. Just googling I came upon this column of his from 2003 where he uses the verse to explain the lack of Wisdom in our Universities: How I found God at Columbia I love his finish in that article:

If our universities produced wise men and women, curricula of moral clarity, and professors who loved liberty and truth, not to mention loved America — there is no question that my religious faith would be challenged. I would look at the temple of secularism, the university, and see so much goodness and wisdom that I would have to wonder just how important God and religion were.

But I look at the university and see truth deconstructed, beauty reviled, America loathed, good and evil inverted, elementary truths about life denied, and I realize that one very powerful argument for God is that society cannot function successfully without reference to Him.

So as much as I shudder almost every time I read of another academic taking an absurd position, I also feel my faith renewed.

Ironically, the worse the universities get, the greater their tribute to God.

Dennis is about to come out with a book on the Bible and I'm interested in reading it.

daddy

If you're Ad-blocked on Miss M's 05:14 here's what Luke Rosiak at the Daily Caller is saying:

Every one of the 44 House Democrats who hired Pakistan-born IT aides who later allegedly made “unauthorized access” to congressional data appears to have chosen to exempt them from background checks, according to congressional documents.

All of them appear to have waived background checks on Imran Awan and his family members, even though the family of server administrators could collectively read all the emails and files of 1 in 5 House Democrats, and despite background checks being recommended for such positions, according to an inspector general’s report. The House security policy requires offices to fill out a form attesting that they’ve initiated background checks, but it also includes a loophole allowing them to simply say that another member vouched for them....

I didn't think it could get any worse but apparently it has.

Wonder if Try Gowdy has heard of the Awan Bro's yet?

Miss Marple the Deplorable

henry, my experience is that on the rare occasion when restoration from a backup tape or disk is desired, no one is a 100% confident how to go about it.

The restore ends up being a total cluster, and everyone is gun shy next time it is "needed".

No way people are going to make selective deletes from backup media, that Is a cluster waiting to happen:)

henry

Buckeye, we practice the restore thing, it can be predictable. However we do have daily backups going back a month with annual media on some systems. Mexico has the absolute power not to let these large “Caravans” of people enter their country. They must stop them at their Northern Border, which they can do because their border laws work, not allow them to pass through into our country, which has no effective border laws.....

...Congress must immediately pass Border Legislation, use Nuclear Option if necessary, to stop the massive inflow of Drugs and People. Border Patrol Agents (and ICE) are GREAT, but the weak Dem laws don’t allow them to do their job. Act now Congress, our country is being stolen!

Given that you are around, I wanted to relate that one of the stops we made on our trip was to the ranch of the grandson of Bassett Jones of Nantucket fame. We finally heard first hand the story of him getting a reservation at a popular local eatery and when they show up there is a line around the corner. He gives his name to the person with a clipboard and they give a big smile and say “your table is ready” and dodge the line like a rock star at a new hip nightclub.

How do we know this caravan is for real?

I saw a few pics of people walking along a street. They didn't seem to be carrying food, water or camping equipment. Judging by the map, the distance from Honduras to the border appears to be around 1,000 miles, assuming there are straight roads and no mountains, and they'd have had to make it through Guatemala first.

Walking 30 miles/day, it would have taken them at least a month. The most recent report I saw said they'd be here by Easter weekend. Has anyone seen a credible report about where this caravan is currently located?

Mr. Trump saw the electoral opportunity. “Trump’s not a clever man,” Mr. Mansfield says, by which he means that the president has little propensity for abstraction or intellectual complication. “But he’s shrewd. He saw that there was a way to be appealing, and to knock off the competition of his rivals in the Republican Party, by a display of manliness and an attack on political correctness.” Mr. Trump is “really the first American politician to use that, to see that there was a political opening there.”

Posted by: anonamom | April 01, 2018 at 06:43 PM

I like what I think is the overall point (the rise of Trump is better explained by an American desire *for* manliness rather than a negative example *of* American racism) but

. . . Trump isn't clever, he's shrewd ???

We have an abiding problem in this country of conflating speech patterns and verbal presentations with cleverness, with candlepower and (more importantly, it seems to me) with associating a very prejudicial presumption re speech patterns and verbal presentations with the *lack* of cleverness.

Trump (or the character he has created for public consumption) is illustrative of this problem. The man has impressed me as clever *and* shrewd. This is on full display right now, IMHO.
