Purgatory. That brings back memories of Saturday morning catechism and the Latin mass on Sunday.
I was disappointed when the Latin mass went away. Pope John XXIII and his Ecumenical Council did it in.

Before that there were mortal and venial sins. It was the mortal sins that would earn your soul everlasting damnation, things like eating meat on Friday or missing mass on Sunday. Pope John changed all that prompting a George Carlin comedy routine that sympathized with the poor bastards who'd already been "doing time in hell on a meat rap."

These days the Catholic Church seems to be into social justice, trying to stay relevant I suppose. I haven't heard anything about purgatory in years, but catechism classes taught us that purgatory was where our venial sins were burned away, and we were guaranteed to have to suffer through it in order to get into heaven. Time spent in purgatory depended directly on how sinful you were and inversely on how many rosaries you recited in life. Unless of course you were going straight to hell, and it seemed anything you were tempted to do would get you there.

It was an innocent time for us kids.
