Thank heaven for science:
How a Low-Carb Diet Might Aid People With Type 1 Diabetes
...
Most diabetes experts do not recommend low-carb diets for people with Type 1 diabetes, especially children. Some worry that restricting carbs can lead to dangerously low blood sugar levels, a condition known as hypoglycemia, and potentially stunt a child’s growth. But a new study published in the journal Pediatrics on Monday suggests otherwise.
It found that children and adults with Type 1 diabetes who followed a very low-carb, high-protein diet for an average of just over two years — combined with the diabetes drug insulin at smaller doses than typically required on a normal diet — had “exceptional” blood sugar control. They had low rates of major complications, and children who followed it for years did not show any signs of impaired growth. The study found that the participants’ average hemoglobin A1C a long-term barometer of blood sugar levels, fell to just 5.67 percent. An A1C under 5.7 is considered normal, and it is well below the threshold for diabetes, which is 6.5 percent.
“Their blood sugar control seemed almost too good to be true,” said Belinda Lennerz, the lead author of the study and an instructor in the division of pediatric endocrinology at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. “It’s nothing we typically see in the clinic for Type 1 diabetes.”
Wait - if my body doesn't produce insulin but I cut back on my bodies need for insulin, mismatches between blood sugar and injected insulin can be reduced? Who could have guessed, other than anyone?
About 1.25 million Americans have Type 1 diabetes, which occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. Managing the condition requires administering insulin throughout the day, especially when consuming meals high in carbs, which raise blood sugar more than other nutrients. Over time, chronically elevated blood sugar can lead to nerve and kidney damage and cardiovascular disease.
The standard approach for people with Type 1 diabetes is to match carb intake with insulin. But the argument for restricting carbs is that it keeps blood sugar more stable and requires less insulin, resulting in fewer highs and lows. The approach has not been widely studied or embraced for Type 1 diabetes, but some patients swear by it.
A popular reason it has not been studied is that it's a pain in the neck:
Dr. Joyce Lee, a diabetes expert at the University of Michigan who was not involved in the study, said the findings were impressive and merited further follow-up, and that patients who wanted to explore a low-carb approach might do so while being monitored by their health care team. But she also noted that the patients in the new study were a “highly motivated” group, and that it would be difficult for many people to adopt the restrictive regimen they followed.
“The reality is that it’s really hard to do low-carb, given our cultural norms,” said Dr. Lee, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Michigan.
In the course of wondering about the reach of the low carb diet approach a few years ago I spent a few moments at the American Diabetes Association website. I am sure my memory is paraphrasing this a bit harshly but their basic message was relax, diabetes doesn't need to be a burden! You can eat the same Sorry American Diet that is ruining everyone else's health. Yeah, have some ice cream after you finish that pizza - just remember to give yourself a double shot of insulin.
As I said, there might be some hyperbole there. My computer has been glitchy lately but this should be the ADA website. Google says so, but it won't load for me.
So the "we're from the government and we're here to help you" bit works as well in medicine as elsewhere?

The lesson from my Genetics Book from the Library is simply to eat and drink whatever the heck you want because your great great great great grandkids DNA will have figured out how to make whatever you're eating that is bad for you become good for them. So eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow our Genome evolves!

People who have gone through famines leave genetic markers through like four generations. The Bible says as much.
They put rats in a cage with a floor that could administer an electric shock. They sprayed a certain scent and shocked them. Their offspring would jump when that scent was sprayed.

I just made a very lo carb meal last night for a diabetic friend and it was delicious:Turkey breast tonnato; salmon tartare and zabaglione made with truvia.
If you need to be on a very locarb diet, thermomix™ has dozens and dozens of suitble easy to make recipes. I'd be glad to share any if you want them--you could make them the conventional way with a bit more trouble, but they're all good. (every one of their guided recipes BTW gives you nutritional information, including the carb count so there's no guesswork.) Reducing carbs is a good idea for all of us.

I've done mostly keto for close to two years and intermittent fasting. I switched from beer and ale to red wine. I dropped at least 20 lbs and I'm maintaining a steady weight again.
Posted by: Pinandpuller | May 07, 2018 at 06:15 PM
It's just as bad to encourage everyone to do low carb as it is to encourage everyone to do whatever the previous restrictive diets were that very few people could maintain for life (almost no one, in fact).
Forbidden foods diets are extremely hard to follow. They're also miserable. It's a harmful attitude.
And if someone is dumb enough to take all their nutrition advice from the government, they probably can't be helped.
Humans have survived on bread- and rice-based diets for millennia. American human bodies are not any different from those of non-Westerners who eat a diet of mostly carbs. Americans just eat too much of all of it.
Portion sizes are 90% of the problem and ought to be 90% of the solution IMO.

Don't forbid them entirely--you'll just crave them more--Instead of that giant flavored yogurt with a half cup of granola on top--go for 4 ounces of it with just a sprinkle of granola. Instead of a sandwich, have a salad with a sprinkle of croutons..and so forth. If you can't bear cauliflower or other substitutes for pizza crust, just eat a smaller portion less frequently.
And for heavens sake, ban the notion of a big bowl of cereal in the morning, it'll just up your craving for carbs all day long. make bacon and eggs or an egg in the basker (one slice of bread)

"if my body doesn't produce insulin "
That's the insanity right there.
Haywire blood sugar indicates that beta cell flow from the pancreas (the little barges that carry the insulin compound into the bloodstream) is restricted. There is tubular structure that serves as their canal. When its enflamed it swells shut.
That restriction is eased when the inflammatory effects of *HIGH GLYCEMIC* (convert from carbohydrate to glucose at the speed of light) foods are reduced.
A kid can eat carbohydrate but it has to be slow uptake carbohydrate--- and they need to regulate their consumption of animal flesh which, in their unique metabolic makeup, can encourage INSULIN RESISTANCE. Not everyone has that sensivity but most diabetics do.
MOST DOCTORS (not anonamom or mine) who will say "Your body isn't producing any insulin" remind me of shyster plumbers who charge you $400 to tell you your waterline isn't producing any water without inspecting the line for a blockage.
The studies coming out are jumping on the bandwagon now having to admit that there is a cure for Diabetes I, II, and III (Alzheimer's) because doctors who are working with patients through nutrition and supplementation are saving lives.

I've said it before but I lost around 15 lbs once on a high-carb, low-fat diet. I ate pasta and rice, but with only a small piece of skinless chicken breast or fish. My brother, who actually is obese, lost around 50 lbs on a low-fat diet, which is how I got the idea. Then he gained it back, went on a low-carb diet after reading about the fad, and gained even more.

The only time I had to lose weight (got up to 160 pounds cooking for my worthless ex-husband who was overweight but demanded stuff like gravy and mashed potatoes) I went to Weightwatchers because a friend recommended it.
They were just starting to segue into the low carb model but weren't quite there.
I learned to manage portions, eat slowly, and trevery once in a while so that I didn't feel deprived and also to give a jolt to my metabolism.
I lost 20 pounds and have kept it off through common-sense eating and not going crazy with things like Girl Scout cookies and Steak and Shake strawberry shakes.
I eat ONE burrito, not 2. I gave up martinis in favor of red wine. I don't eat candy any more. I quit buying potato chips and onion dip. Etc. Etc.

I echo Clarice on the carb reduction. Take stock of one week's nutrition first. Measure the carb intake-- divided by complex and high glycemic (plenty of indices online to identify and measure.)
What we measure tends to be manageable.
Once the measured carbs are written down, target their reduction week 1. Seven full days at 25% less high glycemic carbs. Crunchy stuff is usually the culprit. ( Celery is a great snack. If you hate celery-- yer screwed :D)
Week 2 drop to 50%. By the end of week 3 you might begin seeing some serious weight loss. (A zero carb green juice fast for 3 weeks will knock out 60 pounds or more--- so look to limit calories significantly and don't eat after 6: NADA.)
Take 3 weeks to get to no eating after 6, staying under 1800 calories in a day, and less than 50 high glycemic carbs if you can't eliminate the chips, candy, sweetened bevs etc to zero.
Key: it's not a stop smoking or drinking program. If you fall off the wagon for a meal get back on. Get back on by not eating after 6pm and fasting til 9a the next morning.
An extraordinary reality awaits.

I have missed a lot, but what was the reason for the redaction of the name of Comey, and for the redaction of the remarks that the FBI interviewers of Flynn did not believe he had lied to them? I recall reading and hearing that it was for National Security reasons, but now that it has been sufficiently unredacted to reveal on its face that it was not for National Security Reasons, what were/are these reasons all over Twitter and the Conservative websites for why it was redacted? Other than ass covering of corruption in the DOJ/FBI I've missed those reasons.

JiB,
Either Rush or Howie Carr today, I forget which, suggested it was so that Comey could run around on his book tour, lying on at least 3 different occasions, that it was not the case that the interviewers of Flynn thought Flynn did not lie, and with that bit redacted he could easily get away with repeating his lie, effectively swaying Public Opinion. At least that's a bit of a different selfish and self-serving reason, than simply the evident reason of lying to cover their ass and damage Flynn.

TomR:
"The House report contained that damning information because the DOJ gave it to them. I don't see how this isn't blatantly obvious to everyone. It seems ridiculous to accuse the DOJ of trying to coverup their misdeeds when they were the ones who gave the House the evidence documenting their misdeeds."
Ask yourself why Nunes was so incensed about the redactions? You seem to forget that none of this was said in open hearings, so it was essentially not public knowledge yet (and the Dems were not about to leak exculpatory evidence). Then when the committee submitted the report to Justice Dept. before publication, and it came back with info like the Comey testimony redacted, Nunes went ballistic. He knew very well there was only one reason for keeping that info under wraps. It wasn't for national security, and the only thing it had to do with any investigation was with the one that was already over, when Flynn was convicted. What the redactions covered up was the exculpatory evidence and the fact that Mueller had to get a plea bargain from Flynn because he had no real case against him.
To top it off, Comey was out there talking (lying) about what he testified to Congress, so it's pretty obvious that he, too.was depending on the redactions for his own protection, not for national security or an ongoing case. Redactions are pretty much like a gag order, and even if Republicans accused him of lying, it would just be a he said/she said argument without the report to substantiate the Republicans' claim.
Maybe if a whole lot of people don't get something that seems obvious to you, you need to go back and reexamine the evidence and/or your own assumptions.

Old Lurker:
I think your developer analogy is waayy off.
First of all, Trunp is not the only working part either in Washington or in the Republican party. If Congressional Republicans were putting the transformative legislation on his desk that they've been promising us, Trump would be signing them right back into the majority this fall. It's also hard to claim that Trump is the one putting our majority at risk, when his poll numbers are actually creeping up, unlike Congress.'
If the public is coming around, Trump may think it's better not to introduce a huge, unpredictable new dynamic into the mix, by firing Mueller and upending the DoJ. even if it seems like it needs to be done. Why would he want to suddenly release forces that he may not be in a position to control, if he knows Mueller has got nothing on him and is taking hits, while Comey's busily scoring own goals? None of us can predict what the effect of firing Mueller would be politically — aside from knowing the insanity on the left will dwarf what we've seen to date.
Unlike your developer, I don't see Trump betting it all on one big success. Beating the rap on the Mueller thing wouldn't do it in any case. Yeah, Sessions has been a blow, but even if Trump could have predicted the measure of Congressional obstruction he's faced, there's really not much he can do about that ball and chain. It's not like he doesn't have a full time job of his own! He's been doing what he can, like the tax bill, where he can, and working hard on changing the international ball game. The jury may still be out on a lot of that, but he's already successfully made some really big steps. If he can get something going with Kanye in Chicago, I think you'd have a paradigm shifting tenant right there, and Trump could end up with an undeniable mandate as a result.
Did you really believed that Trump was our long awaited Master of the Universe? If not, you're really in no position to complain that he's not performing as advertised. I tend to think he has just got a whole lot of balls in the air, not all of which we know about. I figure if he doesn't aim one directly at Mueller's crotch, it's probably because he doesn't want to be dropping any of the other balls to do it.
I agree that losing Congress would be a disaster, but even if Trump is impeached, it takes a 2/3 majority in the Senate to convict, and I don't think even the GOPe would dare go that far. Of course, if Bill Clinton is any example, impeachment without conviction might be the best thing that ever happened to him.
Politics may not be 4D chess, but it just ain't a binary operation either.

--Lots of people have the same exact opinion. Fine. What does that have to do with the underlying truth?--
Nothing. But it has a lot to do with what he was responding to.

"Might take a miracle for him to pass his genes on:)"
Might take more than a milagro for the 30,000 Mac Whoofer to pass that much bread and USDA Grade D "beef product". The condiments? Well, that shite will stay in his intestinal track as plaque way past his mummification date. MMMM...guar gum....America's "emulsifier."

clarlice,
I wonder how much stuff he does know. He's kept a cordial relationship with the NYPD, knew a lot of people in Hollywood and in both parties, has a lot of ears on the street through his hotel and golf course employees. I wouldm't be surprised if he paid cab drivers for information.

--I'm going to have to beg everybody's indulgence for some major WILLOWING, if I've decoded the term correctly.--
I'm surprised you didn't concoct it. :)

If Trump knew in 2013, it's hard to believe Cuomo didn't, and he's already on the electoral ropes.

From what I can tell, Yashar Ali was first to market to let us know a story that was published before his tweet would be available after his tweet.

clarice (see I spelled your name right this time),
If I were a GOP candidate I would start trumpeting that. "What did Cuomo know and when did he know it?"
I bet it could be parlayed into a win!

Appalled:
"People don't break down into sides, into easy little left, right slices, partly because some of things that are right and are left in this country don't always make a ton of sense."
Couldn't agree more. Just wanted to let you know. :-)

"
Kev, I'm delighted they like it. Did you use the link I sent you, because they haven't notified me of the sale."
So sorry Clarice. I passed the mission on to my younger Sis to complete. Sent the link but I don't think she followed through. I had asked her how the ordering went yada yada. She drew a blank on the link.
Not to worry. Paw lives in a pretty well-to-do retirement community where "efficiency and ease" are top criteria in their kitchens. Dinner meal is provided courtesy of an "on campus" gourmet restaurant. But the dovies are fending for themselves breakfast and lunch.
I suspect Paw will have many admirers re his new "rig" as he calls it.
My bad! Shoulda done it meseff!

I don't agree with that statement of Appalled much.
The main reason people don't believe what I do is because they're morons.

Kev, I'm curious to know how doctors can check for pancreatic blockage. My sister has just been told she's no longer producing insulin and I wonder what tests are available to see if she has a blockage and m if so, what is the course of treatment. We are concerned that her cancer treatment years ago might be related.

JMH--- those last two posts of yours, as with all of yours, were laser sharp. I keep a file of your posts for quick sharing in email exchanges and facebook leafleting. It saves me time. SO much writing to do and so little time.
Thanks for what you do and say.

https://www.whitehouse.gov/bebest/
This is the First Lady's web site on her new program.
If you watch the video, you will see lots of appearances she made with children which were NEVER shown on TV.
The press acts like she is invisible. That is how they got away with that stupid rumor that she wasn't often staying in the White House, which Sarah Sanders nuked today.
I think she is a wonderful First Lady. She also seems to me to be truly kind-hearted and a little bit shy.
Plus she is always dressed impeccably, unlike a past First Lady we can all recall.

She could contact them and explain the error, Kev.

Schneiderman statement
“In the privacy of intimate relationships I have engaged in role-playing and other consensual sexual activity. I have not assaulted anyone. I have never engaged in non-consensual sex, which is a line I would not cross.

I don't think Trump can do anything about Mueller before the election. If we keep the House I think the door gets opened to firing Sessions and Rosenstein. Giuliani should take Sessions job and take them all down.
Is there any huge reaction to Scheiderman going on?

"She was very impressive and the interaction between her & the President was very warm and loving."
They are traveling together to the top of a very high mountain. They are the most influential people in the world right now. And, that is being put to good use.
FLOTUS' new program is ethical and sane. By comparison look at what Mookie the Mike Obama's experience in the White House has morphed into: The United State of Women Summit.
No joke, it is referred to as USOW. Huh?
A female hog used for breeding? Oh! Silly me-- the womainz are "sowin' seed." How does that woik?
Can just here interviewers in their truncated cadences talking to Mookie Mike about her keynote..." Michelle--- USOW--- tell us about it."
Whudjoo cawmee?
Reminds me of a financial outfit down in Lynchburg VA where Paw lives. Spent a fortune on a highway billboard: SOL Financial. SOL as in "Sun" i guess, from south of dee border. But to most of the locals SOL stands for Shit Outa Luck.
Melania Trump knows marketing, optics, and tone. WHat is not to love?

JMH always expresses her understanding and opinion in an informative and interesting way.

Wow this Schneiderman thing is BIG. Why does Me too aim at Trump and land on democrats?
Posted by: clarice feldman | May 07, 2018 at 08:51 PM
Jane:
Chris Hayes covered Schneiderman on MessNBC so they are not hiding from the story.
At this point I want Cynthia Nixon to take down Cuomo.
