Per The Hill, Mueller's Russian novel is taking yet another plot twist: Deripaska is an oligarch who hired, fired and sued Manafort and may be a witness against him.
But now we learn that in 2009 the FBI worked with Deripaska and let him finance an attempt to rescue an FBI agent from Iran. OK, I like where there head was but they liked Deripaska for this becasue he had business in Iran and (probably like a lot of his peers) had underworld connections. Those connections led to State Department travel restrictions and eventual US sanctions, but now he is on Mueller's side against Manafort? I can't tell the colluders without a scorecard.
And a Bonus Baffler - was subcontracting to Deripaska even legal?
Melanie Sloan, a former Clinton Justice Department lawyer and longtime ethics watchdog, told me a “far more significant issue” is whether the earlier FBI operation was even legal: “It’s possible the bureau’s arrangement with Mr. Deripaska violated the Antideficiency Act, which prohibits the government from accepting voluntary services.”
George Washington University constitutional law professor Jonathan Turley agreed: “If the operation with Deripaska contravened federal law, this figure could be viewed as a potential embarrassment for Mueller. The question is whether he could implicate Mueller in an impropriety.”
Now that sources have unmasked the Deripaska story, time will tell whether the courts, Justice, Congress or a defendant formally questions if Mueller is conflicted.
Mini-bafflers - was the Antideficiency Act invoked as part of the Iran-Contra debacle, with arms, hostages and cash moving off-book? [Yes, cameo appearances] And why is it always Iran? C'mon, send better baddies!
MORE: The Hill linked to a long Dec 13, 2013 NY Times piece about the FBI agent, Robert Levinson, who had specialized in Russian organized crime. In their telling he retired from the FBI in 1998 in order to make more money in the private investigations sector; he then re-aligned with the CIA as a consultant in 2006.
The Deripaska connection:
By mid-2008, the F.B.I. was fully engaged in the hunt. At that time, two F.B.I. agents met at a Paris hotel with a powerful new player who became secretly involved in the effort: Oleg Deripaska, one of Russia’s wealthiest businessmen.Mr. Deripaska’s entry into the case held great promise. He headed an international mining and metals empire with business ties to Iran.
His involvement also came with a price. The State Department had refused Mr. Deripaska a visa because of allegations linking him to organized crime — accusations he has denied. But Mr. Birshtein, the Toronto businessman, had approached the F.B.I. with a plan: He would persuade Mr. Deripaska to join the search and, if they succeeded, both would get their entry problems resolved.
Mr. Deripaska said he would put up millions to fund the venture, but he insisted that his role be kept secret. However, word that big money was in play made its way to Iran. Suddenly, a man with family connection
s to Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, insisted that he could engineer Mr. Levinson’s release for a hefty price. F.B.I. officials were so confident about the plan that they told Mrs. Levinson to stay by the phone for a call from her husband. It never came.
Mr. Deripaska, who was scheduled to meet in 2009 with bankers in the United States, wanted to collect on his end of the deal. The State Department, after two heated meetings with Justice Department officials, refused to issue him a visa, according to government officials. The F.B.I., hoping to keep him in the game, made an end-run around State Department officials and issued him a visa under a special program, allowing him to enter the country twice.
In 2010, during a visit to New York, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, then the president of Iran, was asked about Mr. Levinson by reporters. He said his government knew nothing of the former agent’s fate but offered to help find him.
Was U1 Deripaska's payback for this op? Oligarchs don't do diddly for free. They leave that to serfs.

Funny.
I am trying to clean up a library in the house. I have 3 belivieve it or not:)
A main one in the living room, an adjudent one next to the music area and then a 6 stall one in my office area downstairs. The one in the music area (piano, two guitars, a sax) has all my hard copies of Michael Connoley, Dan Silva, Donna Leon, Lee Child etc. Everyone of them.
So, I am cleaning it out an putting them in order on our kitchen table to sell in our grand garage sale where all of Mrs. JiB's hordings will finally exit the house. But, no. She wants to read them. I said, okay, you'll like Henning Mankel but not James Lee Burke. Then again, I don't thing Jacl Reacher is a fit nor David Balducci or Elmore Leonard (but maybe I need to rethink that). John Sandford is a possibility but not Martin Cruz Smith or Tom Clancy.
See where I am going here? LOL.

Speaker Paul Ryan eyes immigration bill before November elections | Reuters https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-immigration-congress-daca-ryan/speaker-paul-ryan-eyes-immigration-bill-before-november-elections-idUSKBN1IB2DM
Now, a small group of House Republicans - many of them moderates and many with large Hispanic constituencies - are clamoring to revive legislation.
On Wednesday, they outlined a plan to force a debate in the full House sometime this summer on four competing bills that would give Dreamers varying levels of legal immigration status, with some of the bills also expanding security along the southwestern border with Mexico.
There are now 18 House Republicans, of 236 total, who have formally signed a petition that would force a debate on immigration legislation. If they get seven more signatures, their leaders are banking on all 193 Democrats to climb on board, providing enough support to force a floor debate. One Democrat so far has signed the petition.
Whichever of the four bills got the most votes from a majority of House members would then advance to the Senate. Any legislation passed by the Senate would have to be signed by Trump to become law.

"
Saw the video on Ryan.
Said a bill the President can sign about 5 times."
maryrose-colored glasses aside:
In what Universe does Congress "solve" the problem of grown anchor babies and Mexican fugitives continuing to hatch litters outside their own borders?
The video "looks" like El Wonky is all about "doing the right thing" but his acquiescing to a sudden pang for bi-partisanship with the Democrats as if THAT is the right thing to do.
That's Congressional backstabbing to the core.
THAT is Ryan's MO.
If Ryan had stones as a Speaker he would have rallied the House to go full frontal by detaching
funding for the Wall from any DACA quid pro quo.
But that's not who he is. Mr. Weenie and Bun was unavailable for comment.
Further:
I'm not so sure hard core Republican voters will engage in "stay-at-home" protests come the mid-terms to "punish" the Party.
At this point that is merely taking poison hoping the enemy dies. Not effective.
And such a theory DOES NOT take into account the growing backlash of former Obama voters who are waking up each day to news (such as Rush was reporting this morning) that Ben Rhodes and the Rat Corpse were bamboozling the press and the faithful with the leprous "iran deal."
Laura Ingraham has been wrong BEFORE (Ted Cruz ring a bell?)
Why Ryan is despicable in this is he has the POWER to suppress this mess altogether seeing how as of now very few Demz are in just yet.
Smother this and let the next Congress deal with it--- perhaps more effectively in alignment with POTUS' agenda without compromise.
I don't trust Ryan's motives. His cave on the spending issue to prevent a government shutdown (please!) and his lack of curiosity EVER over where the cash to payoff Iran came from and other Obama budget okie dokes keep him and his Weenie Wagon Traveling Show permanently in the ditch as far as I am concerned.

This is getting good
Special counsel Robert Mueller is reportedly pressing a federal judge to turn down a request from former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort to hold a hearing about leaks surrounding the investigation into Russia's 2016 election meddling.
Manafort has asked a federal judge in Virginia for a hearing where witnesses could be summoned to testify about leaks to the media, Politico reported Monday. He argued that the leaking of sensitive details about the investigation into him prevented him from getting a fair trial.
Prosecutors responded to Manafort in a court filing on Monday by arguing that the anonymously sourced news accounts Manafort's defense cited do not "mention the role or activities of a grand jury" and thus doesn't merit a hearing.

A 2015 FISA Reform Raises Questions About Its Handling Of Carter Page
The FISA court’s failure to utilize amici curiae prompted attorney John Cline — one of the first attorneys appointed to serve in that role — to resign his position. In a letter to the court, Cline wrote, “I am concerned that my continued service as amicus might create the impression that I am participating in the court’s work, when in fact I am not.” When asked about the Page matter, Cline told the Washington Examiner, “If I had access to the underlying application, I might have argued that the Steele dossier was unreliable because of its origins, and perhaps for other reasons as sided proceedings, Congress directed the FISA court to create a roster of attorneys willing to appear as amicus curiae, or friend of the court, to challenge the DOJ’s application for a surveillance warrant.

That reform, if properly implemented, could have averted the current scandal surrounding the FISA court order authorizing a wiretap of former Donald Trump campaign volunteer Carter Page — but only if the Obama Administration had also properly disclosed that the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton Campaign had funded the Steele Dossier.

Most Mormons I have known are great people.
I've known some fine Buddhists, Unitarians and agnostics as well. There are many fine muslims.
And there are lots of jerks who call themselves Christians.
None of that has anything to do with the nature of God or the validity of any particular faith.

Does anyone here watch shows that feature federal employees? I haven't noticed any pictures of PDJT up on the walls of the sets. I saw a 2009 episode of Criminal Minds and there was one of the last guy.
