Based on leaks of the nearly-finished report by the Inspector General of the DoJ, there was a lot to dislike about the Comey/Lynch handling of the see-no-evil "investigation" of the Hillary email debacle.

These sob stories about illegals being detained are almost always packed with lies and/or deceptions.
Um, Chica? Yes, he was criminal as being here illegally is, um, illegal; as is ignoring a deportation order from a judge. When he couldn’t produce a proper ID, he signed a paper agreeing to a check which discovered a warrant. All per the usual procedures that everybody undergoes when accessing secured facilities.
Surely we don’t expect MPs to encounter a noncitizen with no proper ID and an outstanding warrant attempting to gain access to a military facility and simply say “OK, be on your way”?
I’d like someone to ask to see Chica’s papers too.
This is one of the most non-controversial stories I could imagine.

Hmmm, my apologies for triggering Maryrose with my provocative hyperbole yesterday.
I suspect we have different views of elected officials.
Some think of politicians as a special group, deserving of respect, or at a minimum, the benefit of the doubt.
I see them as the hired help, better keep a close eye on them so they don't screw off or rob you blind.

Good Morning! Downeast Maine was occupied during the War of 1812. The district east of the Penobscot was brought into the British empire for the duration of the war. Eastport,Castine,Belfast and Bangor were all occupied. The colony was called New Ireland and would have been another Canadian province. Fun fact: Massachusetts did nothing to defend its eastern district, which caused long simmering resentment.

Maryrose,
Several years ago, KimAnn sent me a framed, signed, picture of Trey Gowdy, which I actually moved down here with me, because I loved him so much. My kind of guy.
Recently when Gowdy came out and said "The FBI was doing what they were supposed to do, and not spying" I understood he was answering a different question than the one the media was attributing to him.
But at this point he is either utterly unaware of what is going on at the DOJ and FBI - which is inexcusable given his position or he is covering for them, IMO.
Frankly it breaks my heart.

That's exactly what they are.
Unfortunately, they're hired help who get to raise their own salaries and change the rules by which they can be fired at their whim.

I think that the people who envisioned the EU thought of themselves as a European version of the US. A counter-balance, if you will, a chance to be as important as the US was.
And yet, the EU, as of now, is a collection of a couple of dozen Californias.
That was the plan and I think they envisioned being stronger economically than the US (I remember some lefty jerkoff fantasies about OPEC only accepting payment in Euros to marginalize and devalue the dollar and put us in our place). The trouble for them was it had no chance of succeeding. Even the lib New York Review of Books pointed out that none of the original members satisfied the original financial requirements. The idea of historic nation state entities submitting to centralized control was as stupid as it gets. Even previous voluntary agreements between countries like France and Germany always rewarded the more abundant spenders as Germany found out.
I've previously thought that our states should act more independent and tell the Feds to fuck off but that only seems to happen with loon states like Mexifornia, so so much for that.

Trump’s pardons are not only intended desensitize the electorate to frequent interventions on behalf of his political allies, but also to make a mockery of the federal justice system, to suggest that law enforcement and the courts are incapable and illegitimate to begin with.

Trump has pardoned 7 people.
Barack Obama pardoned over 1900.
This is a pre-emptive accusation that President Trump is delegitimizing the DOJ and FBI.

From OL's 9:05:
“So out of 164 what we ended up seeing was kind of what we expected: We got a bell curve distribution. We had 27 who were on top, we had 108 who were in the middle and we had 29 who were kind of at the lower end,” he said.
Given that we're employing human beings to crew our ships, that's unavoidable.
The problem is where the lower end is set. A minimum ought to be "won't crash their multi-billion-dollar warship into a lumbering civilian freighter" and it seems that we're not there.

narciso, the class wasn't all horror though both Grimm and Andersen tales have horrid things in them (e.g., in "The Red Shoes" the heroine has to have an executioner cut her feet off to be rid of the dancing shoes--the ballet productions of this story for some reason leave this detail out!). But when we got to the uncanny, we really rolled--some student even remembered the idea of the vagina dentata (or dentens, for Jack), though she couldn't remember the term for it. The body language of the few guys in the class was memorable (perfectly understandable). I had to let them know that this idea has been around probably since there have been humans--you can't blame everything on Freud, just a whole lot.

James, all of human endeavors derive from a Bell Curve. It is among the most important jobs of managers to arrange their diverse resources in an optimal way to a) accomplish the mission of the organization, and b) avoid destroying the organization in the process.
Ike won WWII using human resources consisting of all slices of the Bell Curve. Corporations accomplish the same every single day. Other institutions as well.
For the Navy to fail at this is an indictment of the first order.

This Navy Times article 'Maybe today’s Navy is just not very good at driving ships'
By: Mark D. Faram, August 27, 2017 explains the problem. A small part is included below:
"...TRAINING IN A BOX
For nearly 30 years, all new surface warfare officers spent their first six months in uniform at the Surface Warfare Officer’s School in Newport, Rhode Island, learning the theory behind driving ships and leading sailors as division officers.
But that changed in 2003. The Navy decided to eliminate the “SWOS Basic” school and simply send surface fleet officers out to sea to learn on the job. The Navy did that mainly to save money, and the fleet has suffered severely for it, said retired Cmdr. Kurt Lippold.
“The Navy has cut training as a budgetary device and they have done it at the expense of our ability to operate safely at sea,” said Lippold, who commanded the destroyer Cole in 2000 when it was attacked by terrorists in Yemen.
After 2003, each young officer was issued a set of 21 CD-ROMs for computer-based training — jokingly called “SWOS in a Box” — to take with them to sea and learn. Young officers were required to complete this instructor-less course in between earning their shipboard qualifications, management of their divisions and collateral duties..."

Three new reports highlight the laziness problem. First, Trump is acting cranky and resentful in anticipation of his journey to faraway Canada. “President Trump is planning to fly to Canada on Friday. He is not exactly happy about it,” reports the Washington Post. “Trump is a homebody president, preferring to sleep in the White House — or at one of his signature properties — than in hotels, so he is generally reluctant to take long journeys. Furthermore, he prefers visiting places where he is feted — such as on his trips last year to Beijing, Paris and the Saudi capital — over attending summits where the attending leaders are treated as equals.”
Apparently nobody informed Trump that the job involves foreign travel. He also has little patience with domestic functions. The Post obtained audio of his meeting with FEMA to discuss preparedness for hurricane season. You might think Trump would grasp the importance of the issue given that thousands of Americans died on his watch in the wake of a bungled hurricane response in Puerto Rico. You would be wrong. Trump was totally unable to concentrate on the task at hand.
