It has always seemed to me that this made no sense unless that is what they were doing. It all goes back to the idea that they thought Hillary was unbeatable, and Obama and Hillary BOTH hated Trump, both for the birth certificate controversy and the attacks on Hillary's corruption.

So, they didn't need to spy on Trump because they were worried about his competitiveness. What they were doing with all of those contacts by people like Halper and the rest was setting up a scenario where there would be traces of Russian contacts in order to frame him for treason. (Unlike Shaffer, I believe they would have gone for the Rosenberg option if they thought they could get away with it; if not, maximum security with no contacts outside.)

Because they thought she would win, they were sloppy in covering their tracks. That is why we are hearing conflicting stories, nonsensical explanations ('we had to spy on Trump to protect him") etc.

This is actually far worse than simply spying on a campaign. It is using government power to frame and prosecute an innocent citizen for nothing more than revenge, and to intimidate others who might oppose them. It is way past Stalinism.

If they think that 64 million Trump supporters are going to allow this to go on without standing up for him, they are woefully misinformed.
