Jack is Back!

maryrose,

If you go to the Louvre, don't forget to do your shopping, window or real, at Le Carousel de Louvre, which is actually under the Louvre and has some great restaurants like Maxims and boutique stores. Fun place where Frederick picked up an authentic Musketeer's costume for one Halloween.

James D.

Porch @ 1:18

Depressing thought of the day: someone got paid to write that earthshaking, stunning report.

Even more depressing thought: they were probably paid using taxpayer dollars.

James D.

Maryrose that trip sounds amazing - I hope you will have a fantastic time!

I can’t give much in the way of Parisian advice, except to second the comments about the Louvre. It is beyond huge and totally overwhelming. Personally, I enjoyed the Orsay a lot more.

Re the upthread about Trump v McCain v Graham v Clintno v Sanders on "whether the people support Free Trade".

I have a shortcut when thinking about convoluted, complicated, macro-economic. or other type geo-political type things: If the Establishment wants to preserve a Status Quo concerning Complicated Issue X, and Trump wants to burn it down and rebuild it from scratch if at all...Trump is right and the Establishment is wrong.

How's that?

Old Lurker

James "...Louvre. It is beyond huge and totally overwhelming. Personally, I enjoyed the Orsay a lot more."

And if I could do but one, it would be the Rodin Museum. I discovered it on my own in my solo EuroRail Summer of 1969 and have gone back every visit to Paris over the fifty years since.

And as you will see, no one corrected the “misstatement?” If that is what the fucking thing was…

Fox & Friends host slips: Trump’s North Korea summit is a ‘historic meeting between two dictators’

During an interview with former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci, [Abby] Huntsman interrupted to noted that Trump had arrived for the summit in Singapore.

“There is the president of the United States, Donald Trump, about to walk down those [Air Force Once] stairs, stepping foot in Singapore as we wait this historic summit with the North Korea dictator Kim Jong-un.”

“Anthony, talk to us about this moment,” she said, turning to Scaramucci. “This is history. We are living — regardless of what happens in that meeting between the two dictators — what we are seeing right now, this is historic.”.

Good Morning! Has this Jonathan Turley piece been posted yet?

New leak indictment spells disaster for McCabe

The indictment of James Wolfe, 58, former security director of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI), has sent shockwaves around Washington...

The only person who should be more worried than staffers and journalists by the Wolfe charges is McCabe...

It was bad enough for McCabe that he was involved in the investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who was charged with the same violation of 18 U.S.C. 1001 for lying to investigators. Now, Wolfe is charged under the same provision for a leak to the media. For McCabe not to be charged would lead to a torrent of criticism over the failure of the Justice Department to apply the same standards to its own lawyers.

McCabe...must now anticipate that he will be indicted

Fox Turds

Deplorables are still claiming Mueller has nothing on Trump.

Odd since he's prevented from talking about it by the Grand Jury system, and they only have what liar Trump says, and what the liar's attorneys say.

Captain Hate

It's sadly comical how the media yappers and faux intellectuals simply cannot understand how Trump approaches things. Trump is one of those rare people who will size up a situation based on nothing but what the situation is NOW, he doesn't give any credence to what went on in the past, old grudges, old wounds.

It's why he can break the deadlock with North Korea. It's why he can do new things in the Middle East. It's why he can say it's time to bring Russia back into the game. Every one of those positions make perfect sense *now*, but all of the people who are still hung up on the past cannot accept it.

Think what the one million 88 mm flak guns used in the air defense of Germany could have done to Russian tanks on the Eastern front. The 88 mm was deadly against all tanks.

Odd as it may sound my WW2 Pop (Rapido River/Anzio/Monte Casino/Rome/Southern France/Nurnberg/ Munich etc) gave great complements to the 88 as an unrivaled weapon of War. Not enthusiastic, but just matter of factly as a kid I recall him at different times mentioning the 88 soberly and seriously, offering high praise to the German engineers who came up with it and the German soldiers who manned it. In retrospect, I think he sometimes passed such things on to me imagining I should be aware of what sort of things I might have to face should I have followed in his footsteps.

And I suppose in the same vein, if you got Miss Marple's dad lubricated at The Slippery Noodle in the 1950's with a few of his old war time buddies, he'd be likewise seriously complementing the Jerry's for that damn fine killing machine.

Here's a better, bigger version:"I'll let ya know if I find th' one wot invented th' 88."

Jack is Back!

Saw K.T. McFarland and hubby at our annual Southampton Association cocktail party last night and she says Trump is the master at of projecting low expectations. Then he surprises everyone with an outcome everyone would predict as a loss. Its in his natural posture as a businessman and negotiatior and since her hubby is one to the top litigators around all he do was shake his head in agreement.

Had the drinks at my friends house on Lake Agawan. The guy Trump wanted to be his lawyer but he was too damn busy handling huge litigations. Chuck Scarborough was there since he lives down the lane fronting the Lake as well. Good times.

TK, roast pork ribs update. I posted this morning but now I can't find the posting, so I'm guessing it got disappeared.

I kept the ribs in the Dutch oven for 2 hours and then transferred the ribs and onions to a casserole dish covered with foil at 250F until 7:30 pm, or 13 hours. I had about 5-6 lbs of ribs. I thickened the drippings and residue with masa. The dish was fork tender, tasty, and satisfying. I essentially followed your recipe except ribs for chops and I added mushrooms. I could imagine adding some cooking sherry to the gravy. Thank you for sharing!

maryrose

Captain:
I plead ignorance on beers but what Witte offering would you recommend?

Try Root Beer Ribs

Captain Hate

maryrose,

My mistake, I meant Witbier which means wheat beer and is generally mild and low alcohol (a domestic brewery in upstate New York, Ommegang, which specializes in Belgian style beer and ale, and was purchased by the Belgian brewer Duvel about a decade ago, has a Witbier called Witte). Any place serving beer in Belgium should have a Witbier available particularly when you're there.

Although Belgium is still considered a Mecca for beer drinkers, if you go to Fat Heads in North Olmsted or Middleburgh Heights, you can find offerings on tap to rival anywhere else in the world.

Try Root Beer Ribs

Oh, I see 😎

Jack is Back!

maryrose,

Will post here and the other thread: Hoegaarden in Belgium is the premier Witte beer. I always have cases on hand here in the summer. It is the high quality white alternative to Stella Artois which is really a pedestrian beer for being Belgian.

I am so happy you get to travel to France and Belgium with good friends. I had the best time at the Queen's Jubilee and Canterbury with my sister. When you have shared backgrounds and shared senses of humor, it makes traveling that more enjoyable!

I can't offer any advice for Paris, having never been there. I hope you will give us a detailed report when you get back!

Porchlight

Cap'n's 2:37 is absolutely true. This is how business people operate especially at the highest level. Trump doesn't GAS about rinky-dink concessions around the edges and what some other president agreed to 12 years ago or what some Euro bureaucrats might agree to 4 years from now assuming they'd even deliver.

He wants action and results NOW. Such as, tariffs. The international and domestic establishment cannot deal with this at all, which is partly why they are so ineffective in opposing it. But it's so obviously fruitful and what Americans want to see. Let us benefit instead of eternally giving up the store.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Porchlight,

Every day I am more proud of supporting Trump early, and am proud of him for the great job he is doing!

That comment about knowing in the first 5 minutes if a negotiation will be successful or not is spot on. He's been doing this all his life.

And frankly, isn't that what we do when we decide to support a candidate? We can't know all of the background, credentials, etc. We simply size them up by watching how they speak, how they treat people on the campaign trail, etc.

Dang dat Media!

A fashion chief executive attacked by an unwell 6ft man on a busy Tube carriage has slammed two men who moved seats and left her to defend herself.

Tamara Cincik was kicked and threatened while travelling to a business meeting in central London yesterday.

The mother-of-one told MailOnline, children were crying as the agitated man squared up to her and started violently attacking her in the middle of the carriage.

Recounting the incident, Ms Cincik said: 'I got on the Tube at Highgate and I was going to Old Street. A man got on at Archway, he was about six foot and around 30 to 35-years-old and he started just screaming.

'At first I thought he was some sort of performance artist but then it became clear that he was not well.

'He was screaming and shouting at me and saying things like 'I am going to f****** kick you' then he did actually kick me. It was intimidating, he was a big guy and I am only size eight.'

The fashion CEO is keen to stress she does not blame this man, who she desribes as being 6ft tall and of Southeast Asian descent.

She said she believes he needs medical help but added the incident was 'terrifying'.

Ms Cincik said: 'Children were crying and women were crying, it was awful. I wasn't crying I was in shock.

'I remain more angry with those white middle class men who left me to it. As fathers, husbands and sons they should be ashamed of themselves.'

Miss Cincik praised those who came to her aid as 'angels', saying: 'An Eastern European man who had seen the guy on the platform had worked his way down the train as he felt that man was dangerous and he got to me when the train stopped.'

She said her message to those who left her was: 'You are cowards with less empathy and strength than two size 8 women and a Greek female pensioner. Shame on you.

Ha, daddy, Bill Mauldin! Many of the slow Sunday afternoons of my childhood were lightened by going through my dad’s several collections of his work—it dimly brought to my mind what war could be like, and its tedium, discomfort, and, here and there, danger. Mike and Willie always had the chins of a hounddog. I also read and re-read my dad’s Pogo cartoons—obsessively, really. The greatest influences on my prose style come from Austen, Wodehouse, and Walt Kelly. Albert Alligator on the Russian crows’ unintelligible Commie blather: “mmm, how I’s loves that Mexican food!” Or Bun Rabbit: “I carrying the hose.” These things still amuse me no end.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Catsmeat!

Me, too! Read Bill Maudlin and Walt Kelly non-stop! My dad used to do Albert the Alligator with a southern accent at the breakfast table!

Ah, MM! So good to know! If I want to be happy I pick up one of the totally-falling-apart Pogo books I have. Remember this first set of frames in which Pogo, Porky, Howland Owl, and Churchy (la femme) are sitting under a rock in downpour, just passing time. First frame: Porky: “Well, ever’body talks ‘bout the weather but Nob’dy does NOTHIN’ ‘BOUT It—as the feller says—“ Pogo: “Yep.” “ Churchy: “Yep, Mr. Twain said it.” Owl: “MR. CLEMENS SAID IT!” Second frame, Churchy and Owl glare at each other: “MISTER TWAIN!” “MISTER CLEMENS!” Third frame, with Churchy pulling Owl’s hat over his eyes in rage: “TWAIN!” “CLEMENS!” Fourth frame, as Churchy and Owl roll off in mortal combat (saying “AARGH!” “YOMF!” GROMP!”), Pogo and Porky still sitting as they were, barely discomposed: Pogo: “Who did say it?” Porky: “YOU was here ….You heared it…I SAID IT.” What you have was transcribed, as I have the copy to hand.

ENRDV

Maryrose, I never catch up, so apologize if you’ve already had enough travel suggestions.

I haven’t explored Paris for a number of years, but there used to be a great restaurant for duck dishes, and only duck dishes, called the Domaine de Lintillac, 20 Rue Rousselet, 75007. No atmosphere to speak of, but family run and reasonably priced.

Paris is one of the great walking cities because all of the facades have been preserved in its center, so walk wherever you can. The Metro is great and well-explained for when you’re going farther.

If you like museums of science and industry, there’s a great one at 30 Avenue Corentin Cariou in the northeast corner of the city. I think it’s at the Porte de La Villette end of one of the Metro lines.

If you want to experience accessible though expensive elegance, have a drink at the bar in the Ritz hotel.

Hope this helps.
