Big Supreme Court Pick Tonight

TM predicts it'll be the biggest of the Suprme Court nominee's. That means Barretts out since she's only 5.7 and weighs 126 pounds.

So who's the fattest of the remainders?

Stephanie, Nene, Not your Normal Grandma

5.7 and 126 lbs after 7 kids... I disqualify her on that alone! That is unamerican. All women should be overweight and burdened by having kids cause the patriarchy!

That makes the Al Gore recommendation by "Kristol" a serious possibility. The Gore chakra might have acquired orbiting planetoids.

Otherwise, have beer & popcorn on hand.

5.7 and 126 lbs after 7 kids... I disqualify her on that alone!

Where's Andrew Sullivan to claim that they aren't really her kids?

Beasts of England

Seven minutes past my last post on the old thread and I'm sticking with my prediction of Barrett.

Tom R

I'm going with Barrett as the nominee. That leaves the left to attack a smart, Christian, mother of seven - not a good look even for them...

Two of her children were adopted from Haiti. How will the black Christian community view attacks against Barrett by unhinged Progtards?

Miss Marple the Deplorable

I am sick of the accusations of racism by the left, which Jonathan Chait throws out without any proof.

Well, there IS proof, proof that until he ran for president as a Republican he was PRAISED by people like Jesse Jackson. He integrated Mar-a-Lago, suing the county for their restrictions on club membership.

He received an award from the NAACP along with Rosa Parks and Muhammed Ali. There are actual damn pictures of this stuff on the internet.

Seven minutes past my last post on the old thread and I'm sticking with my prediction of Barrett.

Seven minutes and no new point of view?'s settled science!. I'm hoping it's Barrett, but suspect it will be Hardiman. With Barrett, the Dems who voted Gorsuch can claim that Barrett is even more conservative than Gorsuch (whether it's true or not, of course, no one knows), and hope that sounds plausible to their red-state electorates. What I really want to know, though, is if JFK can make Bobby AG, why can't Trump nominate Barron for SCOTUS? Just think of it, he'd serve 60 years!

Kind of ironic that Reagan helped disarm him and then sent him armed guards. I don't want to out the guy but I hear he lives in TN now.

Jemele Hill's on twice, whoever that is.

Mark Sanford! Salman Rushdie!

oh my god this is real

I didn't know, but hoped, that Salman Rushdie would be too smart to be a liberal.

Captain Hate

Chait is as dense as a neutron star and borderline retarded. Ignore anything he says and you'll lead a smarter and happier life.

From the last thread, the EU was always about central control over the unruly nation states of Europe. Even the lib NYRB unwittingly let the cat out of the bag when they said that none of the original members met the financial requirements to belong. That was because the economic arguments for it were big fat piles of misdirection.

Beasts of England

I'm glad you caught the humor in that, hrtshpdbox - seven minutes with the same conclusion is pretty good for me!! ;)

matt - deplore me if you will

The prospect of exploding liberal heads on all the news channels is more entertaining as a great 4th of July firework show.

Watching their heads go pew! pew! pew! on the networks as they race to denounce more loudly than the last asshat is just one more super extra bonus that will brighten our evening and the summer for that matter.

As to our allies, the Japanese, Australians and South Koreans are stepping up while 90% of the Luftwaffe is grounded because of parts shortages. The Dutch rent their tanks from Belgium (or vice versa, I forget) when they have NATO exercises and the HMS Theresa May looks like its on the rocks.

The British military leadership has repeatedly warned the PM and Parliament that their military is on the rocks.

I believe Estonia, Latvia, Poland and the eastern states are punching well above their weight class but the rest are a joke.

Putin saw an opportunity under Obama and while I think Trump has taken his measure, Western Europe is spiraling into irrelevance. Terribly sad to see, and I don't see change on the horizon.

Tom R

Why would Grover Norquist attend an event like that?

Kevlar Kid

final post from me (interrupted by some light chores) on why i am pro-life, less because of ideological reasoning of a political issue, but more of a "stand and fight for all i hold sacred" standpoint.

a story from childhood experience and "home training" by somebody i trusted completely.

>>> the following is a 376 word first-hand account<<<

"On the other hand, the logical conclusion from the view that the unborn child has equal status is that abortion even to save the life of the mother should not be allowed. "

Warning: i call my Mother by her birth name. it is a sign of respect for her as a person. my memories of her will always be couched in the nickname "Gran" as it was she that i knew for most of my adult life after leaving home. I gave her her first grandChild in 1978.

My Mother, Priscilla, was a Navajo half-breed Mormon convert to Catholicism. Priscilita was the most devout contemplative woman i've ever known in this lifetime.

Her doctor advised her, before she married my Paw at 19, to have a tubal ligation. "Your uterus will not sustain a pregnancy to term. And your Rh negative blood type is a huge risk if any of your babies carry Rh positive."

Priscilla never used the F-bomb but once in her life. But the doctor heard it that day.

Priscilla carried 6 children to term and conceived 9 altogether, losing three: 4th month ("Aaron"), 7th("Julia"), and 8th month ("Matthew") respectively.

Priscilla understood that women were blessed with the responsibility to bring life into the world and to ensure their places in the world so they could emerge "as their own persons. babies are little people, dammit!" (as she used to teach us.)

She consecrated each of us through baptism and the Navajo naming ceremony. Priscilla did the same for the three that she lost. They all left this sphere with a name.

Priscilla was a woman of conscience, with a free will she exercised in a way which confused most of the promiscuous church ladies that were fronting and posing every Sunday during that era of free love-birth control-abortion.

Priscilla had mood swings that were hard for us kids to live with at times because of the crudity of pharmaceuticals she took to keep her womb closed (proloids) and the post-pregancy steroids she took to prevent infections from what can only be described as violent deliveries (Paw has been sharing of late with me about Priscilla).

She believed entirely in the maxim "God does not give us anything we cannot handle."

Just caught up with the Lifson column about the potential problems for Team Mueller in Judge Ellis's court over hanky-panky with the AP: Shocker: AP and FBI seemingly in collaboration in Manafort investigation

This certainly sounds like a two-way information exchange, or a quid-pro-quo, if you will. If grand jury-developed information was provided to the AP reporters, that would be a violation of law and procedure...

...Judge T.S. Ellis, who is handling the case, has a sterling track record. Stay tuned, because this could be explosive, especially if laws were violated.

I'm obviously not holding my breath since we've been disappointed so many times by these judges, but I did google these 2 FBI Agents who wrote the Electronic notes. FBI Special Agent Jeffrey Pfeiffer is pretty much invisible, but Karen Greenway has a little more background.

---Karen A. Greenaway
Supervisory Special Agent, International Corruption Unit at Federal Bureau of Investigation

I wonder who they contributed to in Campaign donations.

Beasts of England

I think so, too, matt - and we'd better be working on a plan to remove their nukes before they become part of the Caliphate.

I didn't know, but hoped, that Salman Rushdie would be too smart to be a liberal.

He's probably had enough with Fatwa's on his head from angry Islams, so maybe he thinks this'll keep a Leftist Fatwa from being added to the Muslim one.

If you missed daddy's comment last thread: Art Laffer on his harassment during the Reagan Admin: chilling. This is not new with Maxine, Whataburger and St Jude Hospital.
Laffer: ...really very uncivil. For me personally in the 1980's, even before the 80's, in 1978 with Proposition 13, a property Tax house was picketed by the California Teacher's Association Union members. In fact my kids looked out the front door and recognized their own teacher...that was pretty heavy, but the worst one was in 1987-88, my house was attacked. I lived in Rancho Santa Fe, in a fairly unsettled area. We had 17 acres and we were accosted by a group or one person, I don't know which, since we never caught them, but I had a lot of animals, pets, and stuff. They machetied and killed the animals. Piled them up on the front door step of the house.

Trish (interrupting): I'm sorry, Art, back up a minute. Your own pets?

Art Laffer: My own pets, yes. Deer, Emu's, Rhea's, we had all that. They machetied them, and put them on the front doorstep. We had gone to Disneyland, we came back, and my driveway is a couple miles long and there was not access or egress very easy at all, and they came back twice more. I had to have guards 24/7 around the house, armed guards. You were not allowed to have guns in California, but armed guards around the house at that time. Reagan was very kind in sending me Secret Service to take a look at my schools...we have 6 children, and we had 2 very little kids who were going to Kindergarten, to see whether they were safe and could be kidnapped. It was a very serious event, and you know I haven't talked about it in public ever, but that is exactly what happened to me.

It's happening!!! @voxdotcom convinced @realDonaldTrump & @SenateMajLdr to expand the court and nominate...ALL THREE!!!

Wouldn't it be hilarious if after two weeks of the left talking about packing the court, Trump actually did it?

I doubt he will do it, but it certainly is a delicious thought. LOL!

Tapper is listed on that hideous event "poster."

Can we now stop pretending that he is any kind of reasonable?

James D.

I am sick of the accusations of racism by the left, which Jonathan Chait throws out without any proof.

I checked out of that whole long quote the moment I saw Chait’s name.

Why does any sane person bother to read or listen to or think about anything that jackass says?

The only reasonable response to Chait or any of his ill, on any topic is: “Shut up, sonny. The grownups are talking. Go have a juice box and some Cookies and leave us alone.”

....and by we I don't really mean JOM, we figured out that dude a long time ago.

I think it's going to be Kethledge (Spelled very wrong) altho I'd be thrilled with Barrett.

Scott Adams, a victim of Dem terrorism via bad Amazon reviews and more specifically threats which hurt his public speaking business, has been predicting the Catholic lady (Barrett?). This is for reasons related to Persuasion and so on, not consideration of political issues.

Jack is Back!

I smell a "rope a dope" strategy here.

He nominates the person least likely to get approved (Barrett). Puts her through a Borking, and uses that against the Dems. May have to ask he to step aside so he can nominate an even more conservative justice. We get Gorsuch 2.0, Amy Coney Barrett is saved from attacks on her family, Trump wins again.

Feinstein and Durbin are left fumbling their vowels.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

If she goes along with your strategy, she MUST have Secret Service protection, and she would deserve the Medal of Freedom.

Thomas Collins

I have no idea whom Trump is going to pick. So I'll pick Kavanaugh. With my no idea, I probably have as much insight as the talking heads do.

I have no idea who is going to win the AL East. So I'll say both the Bosox and Yankees will cool off, but the Bosox will hang on with a 105-57 record to edge out the Yankees, who will go 103-59 and then lose in the sudden death wild card game to the 91-71 Mariners.

Another prediction on which I am more certain: No matter who is picked as the next SCOTUS Justice, Obergefell v. Hodges won't be overturned (99.9999999% certainty on that one).

And a final prediction on which I am confident but slightly less certain: Roe, Doe and Casey will remain, although additional state restrictions will be allowed (80% certainty).

Tattoo bets taken only for my Obergefell prediction.

So, you don't have to be able to speak or understand English to get a Green Card?

A woman in the area caught the terrifying incident on cell phone video and said four men joined the mom in beating the grandfather. The witness told the Sacramento Bee that the mother told Rodriguez: 'Go back to your country, why are you here?'

The eyewitness said she called the police and asked the mother why she attacked the man, and was told by the mother that Rodriguez had tried to touch her daughter. The woman who witnessed the attack said that was a lie.

Rodriguez, who doesn't understand English and is a legal US resident, said he doesn't understand why the mob attacked him.

On catch-up its great to see the video Clarice linked of one of the Thai kids on the stretcher being pulled along by Aquamen. I keep reading about shrinks worried about the kids delicate psyche's on these news reports so I don’t know the overall effect, but I am sure hoping that some of this sort of super manliness from all these scuba diving heroes instead actually has a very positive effect on the mental make-ups of these young boys, and they become their best role models on the planet.

It reminds me of that dead WaPo ass, Joe McGinniss, who wrote that nasty book about Sarah Palin, and his main thesis for his last 30 years was hammering into the mind of the public that there were no more heroes in modern society and everybody was just as cynical and corrupt as he was. Well screw him and his BS theme, and it's great to see brave heroes like these divers, Thai or otherwise, risking life and limb to save these kids. It also reminds me of the Fukushima 50, the retired old Japanese Nuclear workers who went into the damaged reactors following the earthquake, knowing radiation poisoning would probably lead to certain death but they did it anyway, so screw Joe McGinniss and God Bless the Thai kids and their heroic saviors.

Let's lower gas prices some more.

Roger that. There are so many stories of courage, bravery, and true grit but that doesn't capture the media's attention until "children of color" are involved and now its all 24/7. But is the media interested in the roots of this story. You know, why would a 25 year old adult coach lead his team into such an unknown environment? What does it say about his leadership and decision making?

That would just spoil such as wonderful story of survival and skill but by others not the soccer team and their coach. I give the kid's an "atta boy" for at least following the directions or real adults and doing what they say to save their lives.

I wonder if like in America, they'll send the bill to the coach.

Superior Judge Iris Cancio Gonzalez said in his July 6 decision that “public schools cannot be granted to non-profit organizations or any other non-governmental agency; only to the University of Puerto Rico or the municipalities,” according to

Gonzales added in his ruling that private donations could inappropriately influence public schools in Puerto Rico, according to

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló signed a law in March allowing school choice options in Puerto Rico to fix the island’s school system after Hurricane Maria temporarily closed all public schools. The program wanted to implement charter schools in 10 percent of Puerto Rican schools and offer private school vouchers in the 2019-2020 school year.

Gonzales mentioned the Supreme Court ruled on an issue similar to this in 1994, and the court viewed it as unconstitutional.

Ramón Rosario, the account secretary for the Puerto Rican government, stated that “it was unsurprising that such big changes for education were drawing such resistance,” according to

Teachers Association of Puerto Rico, a union that represents 30,000 teachers, tried fighting this new law when it filed a lawsuit April 3 preventing school choice from taking effect.

McConnell Mocks Left’s Rhetoric Against Trump Supreme Court Pick: ‘It’s Hard to Keep a Straight Face’

"It's hard to keep a straight face when you hear stuff like that," McConnell said. "There's not even a nominee yet. Justice Kennedy just announced his retirement, and they're talking about the destruction of the Constitution? Please, give the American people some credit."

"This far-left rhetoric comes out every single time, but the Apocalypse never comes," he added. "Americans see beyond … this kind of fear-mongering they tried over and over again for 40 years. Senators should do the same."

McConnell also quoted old attacks on Republican nominees from Democrats and progressive allies.

"Sexist. A disaster for women. Totally unacceptable," he said. "These are just a few of the ad hominem attacks the far-left special interest groups hurled at a federal circuit court judge whom a Republican president nominated to the Supreme Court. The name of the federal judge? Anthony Kennedy."

Believe it or not, McConnell said of Kennedy's confirmation, "the sky didn't fall."

'Fraid not. Well, we can, but it's frowned upon by other librarians, because it perpetuates a negative stereotype of librarians.

To be honest quiet study is very sought after by students who live in noisy dorms/apartments, but our library administration doesn't GAS and keeps giving away space to other entities. So I'm glad to help keep things quiet for those students. It's the last quiet space in Austin. Is ACA tax gone?

I am woefully behind but have had this question in my head for months and I have not seen it addressed. The Roberts penned majority SCOTUS decision on ACA ruled it is constitutional only because it is a “Tax”? The “Tax” was the penalty for any individual not purchasing the required insurance. (The individual mandate) My understanding is that recent legislation signed by President Trump. has eliminated that mandate (tax?). ISTM that the ACA is no longer constitutional without that tax. Is there some other tax I am missing that is still part of the law? …or am I completely off on the actual SCOTUS decision?

Where is that Sargasso Sea of plastic junk located?

Man Tran,

I recall from my extended time on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean in the early 80's, that plastic litter frequently washed up on the coral reef surrounding the island, and I recall it primarily being flip flops and empty plastic bottles. Diego Garcia was about 900 miles due south of India/Sri Lanka and a couple thousand from Africa to the West and South East Asia to the East, so obviously it wasn't American stuff.
I also recall from my years of living in the Philippine's that the beaches at Mira Flores, where we'd rent the motorized Bonka Boat open canoes to run us over to site-see Corigador, that the plastic garbage on the beach was easily head high and astonishingly filthy, tho' the kids happily clambered over it bare foot and in flip flops, as if it was a playground. But then to top it all off I recall we'd do legs from Manila to Mombai, where we'd lay over a few days in a fancy Hotel amidst unbelievable squalor, and noticing how after 3 days in India we'd fly back to the Philippines, but now instead of the place looking like an open sewer, in comparison to Mumbai it struck as as lovely as St Tropez. That comparative effect always surprised me:)

When I was in Balikpapan, it was very noticiable when we had to lay the pipeline from the offshore rigs to the recieving terminal. Use to have to take our LST out to the straits and inspect the lines. The divers were constantly bitching about all the plastic and shit they had to navigate.

Off to dinner in the village. Going to our favorite French place to see if we can get a bar seat reservation for tomorrow's Belgium v. France WC game. I'll ask if I can bring in my Belgian flag:)

Oh, talking about the French. Frederick has met a girl from Paris at Yale and wants us to bring her back to friends in Wainscott. Sure:) This is going to be a fun ride back on 3 ferries.

"Frederick has met a girl from Paris at Yale and wants..."

And so. It begins.

The West accepts an epochal, monstrous, unforgivable double standard. We rehearse the crimes of Nazism almost daily, we teach them to our children as ultimate historical and moral lessons, and we bear witness to every victim. We are, with so few exceptions, almost silent on the crimes of Communism. So the bodies lie among us, unnoticed, everywhere. We insisted upon "de-Nazification," and we excoriate those who tempered it in the name of new or emerging political realities. There never has been and never will be a similar "de-Communization," although the slaughter of innocents was exponentially greater, and although those who signed the orders and ran the camps remain. In the case of Nazism, we hunt down ninety-year-old men because "the bones cry out" for justice. In the case of Communism, we insisted on "no witch hunts"—let the dead bury the living. But the dead can bury no one.

European women in their 30s are way higher educated than men. Women still tend to want a partner with higher or at least equal education. This means highly educated women and uneducated men remain single. Source:

I think you are right about the constitutionality of Obamacare. Someone needs to file a lawsuit.

Less than 3 hours to go now...I'm still hoping for Barrett!

"Plus her voice is very grating to me, and I want John "Obamacare is a Tax" Roberts to have to listen to that voice every day of his life for the next 50 years."

Also, because Roberts will become come the "Voice of reason."

So are we betting on who the nominee will be?

I bet Barrett. (Already said why a few days ago, and won't bore the team with that again.)

Ruth Bader Ginsburg believes it’s time to stop playing politics with judges

“I hope someday we will get back to the bipartisan spirit prevailing with respect to the confirmation of judges,” Ginsburg said.

“I was considered by some a controversial person because of my affiliation with the American Civil Liberties Union,” Ginsburg said. “There wasn’t a single question asked of me during my hearings about my ACLU connections. the vote was 96-3. When Justice [Stephen] Breyer was nominated the next year, the vote for him was also in the 90s. Since then the Senate has tended to divide along party lines and I think that’s unfortunate. During my confirmation hearings, perhaps my biggest supporter was Orrin Hatch, the Republican senator from Utah.

“I hope someday we will get back to the bipartisan spirit prevailing with respect to the confirmation of judges,” she concluded.
