This is an odd story from last spring by Jonathan Swan of Axios as reporters circle for the Trump-Putin meeting:
Scoop: The time Putin actually enraged Trump
Earlier this year in the thick of his election campaign, Vladimir Putin released a propaganda video promoting Russia's "invincible" new generation of nuclear weapons.
Why it matters: One scene in particular caught President Trump's attention, according to sources with direct knowledge. The motion graphic in Putin's video appeared to show missiles raining down on Florida — the home of Trump's Mar-a-Lago club.
Apparently in a phone call Trump told Putin what he really thought:
- In the source's recollection, Trump told Putin he thought it was "outrageous" that he'd put out the nuclear weapons video.
- Trump said, "I called up Theresa [May] and Angela [Merkel] and they agree with me," the source recalled.
- "And the other day, I saw you say you need a new arms deal," Trump told Putin, in the source's recollection. "So I guess that was just election talk. I'm glad to hear you weren't serious about it."
- Then Trump added: "I’ve already increased defense spending, modernized our nuclear weapons...We can do more, so if you want to do an arms race you’ll lose."
OK, this is a friendly leak intended to reassure us that Trump can be a tough guy. I'm delighted to get some reassurance.
Yay, new thread!
It all seems to be misdirection and fake news.

Or there is the NYT view of the meeting:
In this episode of Trump Bites, Donald Trump’s not-so-secret admiration for Vladimir Putin plays out in a teenager’s bedroom, where the fantasies of this forbidden romance come to life.

Well the media continues to wet its diapers (now there's soggy mess) over the thought that Putin will 'handle" the low IQ Trump. Some go so far as to say that Trump should not meet with Putin because he can't handle Putin.
Somehow I'm not worried. Trump can be a bully when he wants to be--and brash and thoughtless when he's distracted. Helsinki will be okay.

Random OT Thoughts:
The Russians, like the entire world, knew Hillary would win. The hacking was not designed to “meddle” in an election as much as it was to weaken the future President Clinton.
Russians shared that portion of the “hacks” related to the Dem Primary – not to affect the election but to weaken the future President Clinton. Better tidbits were kept for a later day.
The “affair” was part of the cover for the undercover assignment to stop Trump.
The “path laid out in Andy’s office” was the Sr FBI plan to insure Hillary victory.
The “insurance” policy claim was to be filed in the event of the premature death of the Hillary presidency. You can’t file a claim until after the covered “loss”. Couldn't and didn't go into effect until November 10, 2016. The policy included a full investigation of a collusion hoax with Mueller assigned as the “adjuster”. The policy benefit was to make Trump lame and ineffective. (Someone at JOM awarded me the “Sid won the internet” title for the day I made the adjuster comment months ago.”
The insurance claim is in effect but apparently was poorly underwritten as Trump is far from Lame or ineffective.

WILLIAMS: “We just read what you said on Twitter. Your reaction to what you’ve just seen?”
BRENNAN: “Well, Brian, I thought that there was nothing Donald Trump could say that would shock me, but I was wrong. I was just totally shocked at the performance of Donald Trump in Helsinki at a press conference with Vladimir Putin. I just found that it was outrageous. And even when the press — and thank goodness the press asked the right questions — even when the press gave him an opportunity to hold Russia accountable for anything, he chose to talk about Hillary Clinton, about his election, about servers. He criticized American citizens, Secretary Clinton and others as opposed to really taking advantage of a world stage, with all the world’s eyes upon them, to point out how unacceptable Russia’s behavior and interference in our election and the elections of other democratic countries around the globe is. But he just shirked those responsibilities. I cannot understand how the national security team can continue to abide by this and how Pompeo and Bolton and Kelly can continue in their jobs. This, I think, rises to the point of good American patriots resigning in objection to that performance by Donald Trump. I’m at a loss of words to describe just how outrageous his words, his statements, his behavior has been. And one can only conclude that he fears Vladimir Putin. And that one-on-one discussion, who knows what was discussed there. And how Mr. Putin now is the master puppeteer of Donald Trump, the person who is in our Oval Office. Outrageous.”
WILLIAMS: “I just saw a picture of Huntsman and Pompeo while the President was speaking, looking a bit stricken. But to your point about patriots, to your point about resignations, what do you think the practical impact, just say by the end of business today, tomorrow, will be?”
BRENNAN: “I don’t know. That’s why I said in my tweet Republican patriots all over the country, including in the Congress, where are you? When are you going to speak out and roundly condemn what Donald Trump is doing? And all of those good Americans who voted for Mr. Trump believing that he was going to protect this country, I think you have now his demonstrated unwillingness, maybe inability, to protect this country’s interests. I think this is a time for all Americans to rally and to say, ‘Mr. Trump, you are not doing what is necessary in order to keep this country strong and safe.’ And Mr. Putin must be now, with his team, just rejoicing in what has happened in Helsinki.”

"With Trump now we have two issues regarding our security. First is competence. For a man who spends so much time in an alternative world, can he be trusted to assess a threat properly and respond appropriately? Both the inadequate response to the Puerto Rican crisis and the historic mismanagement of the border crisis suggest not. But then there is the much more challenging question – does the President actually want to protect America from foreign threats? Can we count on him to be there for us in a time of need? And on this one I think we have to admit we just aren’t sure. His response to Russian aggression raises questions frankly about where his ultimate loyalties lie. A true patriot would have mobilized both US institutions and those abroad to ensure Russia could never replicate the 2016 attack. Bur rather than doing this, the President has not only denied the attacks ever took place, but he has weakened the international and domestic institutions (NATO, EU, FBI, DHS) needed to challenge Russia in the coming years. He continued those denials today, in his disastrous joint press conference with President Putin. Given the opportunity to challenge Putin to stop his interference efforts in the US, the President incomprehensibly took a pass.
So here we are. It is a sad and dark time in America. It sure appears that we cannot count on President Trump to keep us safe. We all wish it were otherwise.
This is a topic well worth debating in the upcoming elections this fall."
just hit my email box from NDN. There is a level of hysteria across media about that press conference. I guess because so much is invested in people believing russia is why hillary lost.
