Hi! The woods are quiet today.

Kevlar Kid

It's quiet. Too quiet.

daddy

Tiger's only 4 back after round 3.

Beasts of England

Tiger will be in the antepenult game tomorrow at The Open. That's a fine position for him to apply pressure... Breakfast at Carnasty!!

Jane

Just to clarify - Kiwi's food is in a bowl in the kitchen. She puts it in her mouth and walks into the office or the dining room to eat it.

Beasts of England

Kiwi is cute enough to eat in any room of her choosing, Jane!! ;)

gentlejim

Raise your hand if you want to live at A-mom's house for a week.
Depends, how big is the feeding crate? :)

I’m hoping Tiger pulls a Jean van de Velde. I am not and have never been a fan.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Back from the grocery. We usually don't go this late on Saturday, but I wanted daughter with me because she wants things I know nothing about, like almond milk and organic strawberries. I buy stuff liked smoked bratwurst. LOL!

Regarding dog feeding: our dogs have to eat in 3 separate rooms to avoid food-snatching and fights. Pibby's bowl is here in my bedroom office, along with Edgar the cat's.

The dogs are inside as a security measure (at least for Maggie). The other 2 just contribute noise, but from outdoors it sounds like we have the Bumpasses' dogs from A Christmas Story, so that is good for anyone who would think to break in.

Jane

Kiwi rocks! Thanks Beasts

That's how it is with our cat, too.

Beasts, I have a sneaking suspicion that you are wrong about A-mom being a pushover in real life. Any lady who likes gentlemen, knowing that they might not be gentle men bears careful watching...

Florida makes it a crime to intercept or record a "wire, oral, or electronic communication" in Florida
Unless you're a Dem congresscritter.

Stainless steel is considerably softer than regular. I tried using SS screws and nails to replace my rusty siding nails, but half of them couldn't deal with the rock-hard 100+ year old wood, even using the old holes. Lowes/HD don't carry thick ones. Pre-drilling should help, but I recommend getting the coated exterior screws.

In the 20's rebuilding of my house, the doors were hung on the wide trim about 3" inside the studs, probably because the studs were irregular. They used the plaster to flatten the walls.

My contractor had to replace all the interior wall framing and reinforce all the exterior. Terrible framing before building codes. The 2 story houses close on each side probably kept it from collapsing.

lyle

What is the congrats to Caro and Ed for, Jane? Oh, wait. I meet them in a mere five days. I can ask them myself!

Sevens are very fun to watch.

Thanks for the Bear Cam! When I looked, there seemed to be a mother bear and 3 cubs! Amazing!

Jane

Lyle,

Today is their wedding day! Probably about right now!

narciso

congratulations caro,

daddy

Miss Marple,

For some reason bears tend to birth multiple cubs, and triplets is probably less rare in black bears than single births. Here's a bit on that:

Black Bear Litter Size

How many cubs can black bears have? The record is six in Pennsylvania. Most litters are two or three. Two is most common in western North America. Three is most common in Minnesota and eastward in North America where food tends to be more abundant than in the west...

...What size litter contributes the highest number of surviving cubs to the next generation? In northeastern Minnesota, it is litters of three.

The litter size (3) that contributed the highest number of surviving cubs (2.45) to the next generation was also the most common litter size; 22 (63%) of 35 litters were 3.

Litters of 1 or 2 were usually from first-time mothers. Subsequent litters from these mothers were typically 3.

Litters of 4 showed a higher death rate. Only half those cubs survived a year or more.

Litters of 5 are rare but have been reported from Minnesota, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New England. A litter of 6 was reported from Pennsylvania.

And according to this article it is most common in Polar Bears to have twins.

Jane

I'm having a very weird day. My best friend down here is up north burying her 2nd son, and Caro who is one of my closest friends is getting married. Talk about being torn in 2 directions.

Jones is one of several Nazis, Holocaust deniers or white supremacists who have elbowed their way onto the GOP ballot for November’s midterm elections, in part by either concealing their views or running unopposed in the primary. But their campaigns have alarmed Republican leaders, with state and national GOP figures now speaking out against them and making clear they are not welcome in the party.

"The Illinois Republican Party and our country have no place for Nazis like Arthur Jones,” Tim Schneider, the chairman of the Illinois GOP, said in a statement to Fox News. “We strongly oppose his racist views and his candidacy for any public office, including the 3rd Congressional District."

Jones' campaign website is filled with numerous anti-Semitic statements, Holocaust denials and screeds against everything from immigration to term limits for federal judges

In preparatory meetings, Mr. Trump and his aides discussed using the indictment to forcefully make the case. The plan was for Mr. Trump to invoke the indictment both in private meetings and in the public news conference afterward, a White House official said. The idea, the official said, was to “shove it in Putin’s face and look strong doing it,” depicting it as hard evidence of Russian crimes against America’s electoral process.

“He did the exact opposite,” the official said. During the news conference, Mr. Trump appeared to side with Mr. Putin over U.S. intelligence agencies, saying he saw no reason why Russia would have interfered in the election. On Tuesday, he said he meant to say he saw no reason why Russia wouldn’t have interfered….

“It was a well laid-out plan. Unfortunately, he didn’t execute on it,” the official said.

Mr. Trump’s performance at the summit and afterward complicates plans for the midterm elections, a White House official said.

White House aides had begun preparations to make Mr. Trump the public face of planned efforts by the administration to stop election interference in the midterms. Mr. Trump would be shown presiding over meetings and making announcements about an administration-wide commitment to safeguard the 2018 elections. In the wake of the Putin summit, Mr. Trump may struggle to credibly make the case that he is spearheading the effort to protect U.S. election systems, the official said.

These people are either lying or delusional.

"For some reason bears tend to birth multiple cubs, and triplets is probably less rare in black bears than single births"

my research pal is studying black bears and grizz to find out how the monestrus bear can conceive more than once during their brief seasonal estrus cycle. preggo once, then getting preggo again in the same season to carry two or sometimes 3.

Jane

Marlene I screwed that up. She has 2 sons. One is alive and well. Sorry about that.

Jane

Lyle,

You better bring some really good wine!

daddy

preggo once, then getting preggo again in the same season to carry two or sometimes 3.

Kev,

This delayed blastocyte business from my top link may explain that:

Black bear females typically produce cubs every two years once they become mature. The 2-year reproductive cycle is genetically timed to fit the annual cycle of plant growth and fruiting of the region.

In northeastern Minnesota, black bears mate in late May or June. Sperm fertilizes microscopic eggs in the uterus, and each egg quickly develops into a tiny ball of cells called a blastocyst. Black bears have delayed implantation, which means the blastocysts suspend further development until they implant in the uterine wall in November. After implantation, the blastocysts develop rapidly and become cubs that are born in mid to late January.

Jane, the Saturday before my eldest's wedding I spent ten hours with my partner whose wife had been biking and killed immediately on impact with a car, meeting him at the ER then staying til his children got in from all over.
It is a whole lot of "circle of life" stuff to handle at once--especially being at opposite sides of the circle almost simultaneously, as you are today.

Pinandpuller

Mommy, the bears are fighting!

I remember that Amom. And I'm with neither of them. I can't figure out if it makes it harder or easuer.

An OT NFL question.

I am still uninterested in watching those primadonas this season and I'll probably only catch them in whatever Bar I happen to be hanging out in, but I see from flipping thru my TV channel guide that they are starting the Pro Football push on the channels of the usual suspects.

Does anyone remember if the big brouhaha of players refusing to stand for the National Anthem started before last season, or sometime during the Season. I ask because I'm interested in seeing if viewers continue their abandonment of the NFL when the Pre-Season Games start being broadcast, and we can compare the Pre-Season viewer numbers to the previous years Pre-Season viewer numbers and see if they are down significantly.

anonamom

Maybe not physically Jane, but I have no doubt whatsoever that you are with them both today.

hoping that if the NFLPA sues the NFL for infringing on "player constitutional rights" that it goes to SCOTUS and gets turned into Swiss cheese.

this season, since more players are opting to stand, the laggards will be boycotted in terms of jersey sales--- and will be outright chastised on their twitter pages and SM feeds.

just sayin since Trump blew a hole in the rampart last year, more "fans" have been emboldened to hammer away vs. the general boycott.

now about Roger Goodell.... will this be his last year "wrecking the league?"

Given that pedophilia has broken into public discussion and Twitter yesterday and today, I thought it was interesting that the White House published this executive order.

As we discussed yesterday, we don't really know all that is going on. I tend to think the Russia thing and the Cohen tape is in reaction to this.

Ditto this, peter: "I strongly disagree w the advice to hang around for a few days after drop off. Go to orientation," then hit the road.

Peter,

For me I was able to go up a few weeks early to College and got a job pouring beer and making pizza's at The Bacchae before classes ever started. Maybe he could consider getting a part time job at Subway or some Coffee joint, so he'd make friends that way and have something to occupy him that'd keep him so busy that he'd be too busy to worry about being a stranger in a strange land. Dartmouth's part time jobs at the Campus Museum and in the Rare Book Section of the Library helped her not feel like a fish out of water.

Captain Hate on the iPhone

now about Roger Goodell.... will this be his last year "wrecking the league?"

I doubt it. Trump mocking King Roger the Pudgy's salary will trigger the dickhole Rooneys and Maras to dig in on their stupidity. It will be the greatest thing ever to have those clowns depend on the niggardly left, who underneath it all hates the sport, for support.

Outstanding bidness plan imo.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

When she said that my daughter noticed my reaction. We later were discussing what to do. I think I will enlist her father in dissuading her.

No joke. She's a big girl, VERY blonde, very liberal, and very outspoken. Visions of headchoppers and white slaves ran across my field of vision.

That Dr Stanford proposes a very controversial rebuttal to Evolutionary Theory would be a gross understatement!. The subject matter is of such a ubiquitous nature as to be much more than just another small thread for Pro-Intelligent Design. It needs to be recognized as of greater scope and importance than just tit-for-tat, Evolution versus Intelligent Design arguments akin to Democrats versus Republicans. A little known claim that has not been made promulgated outside of a small, quiet and elite group of Population Geneticists, near-obscure, having received little or no publicity. Given the universal, widespread juggernaut of Evolution as the Prime Axiom around which our entire Western Civilization revolves, as deep, far, and wide as one can see, the virtual rule from which all measurements are taken, this small group of scientists are not likely to be shouting what they know from the housetops; too controversial, too sensational and alarming as it's devastation affects the entire human race!

Good luck, MM.

That is a really really stupid idea for an American Snowflake to assume she will find her "Safe Place" in that hell hole, or any of the others in that region. "VERY Blond" will earn the guy who snatches her a nice bonus when he sells her off. And even if she is big enough for Wrestlemania, they have drugs which will handle that.

That girl needs to go read some books and open her eyes to the real world. Heck. Just watch Taken a few times and some of the other movies about American kids going to jails in that part of the world for acting like they are in their hometown colleges.

the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act (Public Law 114-328) (the “Act”),

Does that have any connection with the Magnitsky thing that that Veselnitskaya Russian chick in the Kushner/Manafort/Trump Jr meeting was supposedly pushing, or is this apples/oranges?

henry

Pin, complexity has its own entropy once past trivial. I get that from Shannon (information theory) and Godel (completeness). Both math proofs. That another information system (aka DNA coding, secondary methylization of DNA etc) follows the proofs is not a surprise. Hell, something as stupid as bureaucracy and its companion regulation also follows entropy to increasing complexity (the very reason I am on the ledge"). It takes enormously more energy to cut regulatory excess than to create it. We may be doomed by the laws of nature. (Which is why no aliens are arriving, natural laws apply to ET the same as us).

First, GUS, you are amazing. When I went to Carnastie on my first trip back in 1997, 2 years before the vanDeVelde meltdown, it was with 3 other guys. Two of them were scratch golfers, one was a +3 (ex-Pro), and pitiful me at a -6. No one made a par. Think about that. Shooting an 85 means you made more pars than the 4 of us. Truly a feat.

Now admittedly, we played from the tips, showing off to each other. That didn't work out. But it is the toughest test of golf in the world outside of Shinnecock, as is being demonstrated today. They had gusts up to 25mph at Carnastie today and you got under par rounds. At Shinnecock, it never go winds above 20mph in June, and Koepka eeeked out a +1 score to win.

Yet at Shinnecock, I have never had a par or bie rdie less round. Amazing. Carnastie should be just as difficult but it doesn't have the same hilly topography that can affect ball flight. Plus the upside down frying pan greens.
