The Trump-Cohen tape is out on CNN and this "cash' element of the controversy is crazy:
Cohen told Trump about his plans to set up a company and finance the purchase of the rights from American Media, which publishes the National Enquirer.
"I need to open up a company for the transfer of all of that info regarding our friend David," Cohen said in the recording, likely a reference to American Media head David Pecker.
Trump interrupts Cohen asking, "What financing?" according to the recording. When Cohen tells Trump, "We'll have to pay." Trump is heard saying "pay with cash" but the audio is muddled and it's unclear whether he suggests paying with cash or not paying. Cohen says, "no, no" but it is not clear what is said next.
No payment was ever made from Trump, Rudy Giuliani, the President's attorney, has said. Giuliani has previously acknowledged that the recorded discussion related to the buying the story rights.
And then...
Davis later added: "Ladies and gentlemen, if you voted for Donald Trump, listen to the tape and ask yourself: Is Donald Trump lying when he said he didn't use the word 'cash' and accuses Michael Cohen of using the word 'cash'? Cohen has been disparaged. Cohen has been insulted and called all sorts of things by people around Donald Trump."
Alan Futerfas, a lawyer for the Trump Organization, refuted that the tape shows Trump was offering a cash payment.
"Whoever is telling Davis that cash in that conversation refers to green currency is lying to him," Futerfas told CNN. "There's no transaction done in green currency. It doesn't happen. The whole deal never happened. If it was going to happen, it would be a payment to a large company that would obviously be accompanied by an agreement of sale. Those documents would be prepared by lawyers on both sides."
Cash, in the conversation, was in reference to how a deal would be financed, Futerfas added.
"The word cash came up in the context of the distinction between financing, which is referenced, and no financing, which means a full payment, a total one-time payment. That's the context in which the word cash is used," he said. "Anyone who knows anything about the company or how the President does business knows there is no green cash. Everything is documented. Every penny is documented."
I refuse to doublecheck but I am confident Cohen had a contract with Ms. MacDougal, or Stormy, or both. No mention of a suitcase with unmarked twenties of a bag of Trump Casino chips.
Cohen's lawyer was more colorful:
Davis told Cuomo the tape clearly shows that it’s Trump who says “cash” and declared, “Richard Nixon couldn’t spin the tape that did him in, and there’s no way that Mr. Giuliani, who knows from being U.S. Attorney, the only people who use cash are drug dealers and mobsters. Cash is not what you do, and it was Michael Cohen who said, ‘No, no, no, no.’ And Donald Trump, despite what Rudy Giuliani said publicly, the tape contradicts Mr. Giuliani and the word ‘cash’ is heard by everyone.”
Well. On Wall Street people talk about cash financing all time and never mean green bills. I have even bought a car in a "cash deal", or at least, in a deal that involved neither a lease nor any financing (Yeah, that's how us high rollers roll. Four year old Highlander, but whatever...). And it's not just me!
Buying a Car: Should You Pay With Cash if You Can?
It may seem like a smart idea: You're buying a car, and you can afford to write one check for the entire vehicle, which means you'll never have to make a payment. You should go ahead and do that, right? Not necessarily. We explain why it isn't always a great idea to buy a car with cash, even if you can afford to do so.
Wait, what? Buy with cash by "writing a check"? Whatever could that mean?
As to the notion that only drug dealers and mobsters use actual cash, hmm - maybe that is why so many people are afraid of their plumber. It's not Trump, it's the tax evasion! I guess Mr. Davis has never met a small businessman who sometimes mis-estimates his business receipts, at least as far as tax reporting goes. I've heard it happens.
Well. I have thought for a while we were at least making progress through the foothills on the way to Peak Stupid. Now I'm wondering if we are stuck on Mesa Stupid.
BUT THEN AGAIN! Can't spell "Mensa" without "Mesa"!

The best thing about sin (besides sometimes being fun in the extreme!)is it can be managed each day.
And, so much like the old saw "the good thing about the future is it comes only a single day at one time"--- the same holds true with the opportunity to sin anew or to "re-align" with Truth (intentional capital T signifies aligning with the Great Law of Cause and Effect--- the cosmic IF/THEN).
I receive daily tutelage from a master (the architect of many spiritual solutions found in various 20th century self-help gurus' literature, e.g. Dr. Wayne Dyer) interpreter of Scripture--- Emmet Fox.

This is a guy who literally has to pay playmates to make them leave him alone.
As an alpha signal, that's decidedly not subtle.
=================================
Which brings me to this point: All we were told during the Clinton Administration was that it was "all about sex" and none of our business.
So, now that they got everyone used to that idea, suddenly they want to get us all upset about a Playmate.
First of all, IF he had any contact with her, I would say that the looks quality of his paramour is decidedly higher than that of Monica Lewinsky.
Second, they keep thinking that the cartoon image they have of conservatives and evangelicals is how we really are. They think evangelicals and practicing Catholics are like the Church Lady, and at the first hint of sexual immorality we will run away clutching our pearls. The flaw in this is that while President Trump isn't a saint, he will not persecute the Church, unlike the dems wish to do and have already proven with numerous lawsuits.
In addition, they somehow think we are frozen in a Cold War mentality and that shouting "The Russians are Coming!" will make us run around in panic like Carl Reiner did in that old movie.
This is what happens when you live in a bubble. They have cut themselves off from anyone who disagrees with them and they are going to lose because of it.

It is bizarre. Another example is how they keep accusing people of being gay, or pointing out gay supporters and mocking them for being so, which makes zero sense. Suddenly, they are acting like the biggest anti-gay mob imaginable if it's a gay Republican.

you've commented many times now re the outrage i feel over Paul Manafort and due process.
Manafort's case is utter tyranny.
FISA judges and judges like the one who bought Mueller's arguments to incarcerate Manafort without trial are overt examples of our legal system's default mode of "unequal protection under the law."
continuance of such will make Bacon's Rebellion look like a weenie roast.
my outrage over Manafort would otherwise debilitate me into dithering circles of frustration (that's just me) were it not for having a pressing mission at this time.
that mission only had a chance for success because an entrepreneur was elected President.

They've known about water on Mars for a long time. There are channeled scablands visible from Earth that are the result of massive floods long ago.
A geologist in the 1920s, J Harlen Bretz, was the first to theorize that massive catastrophic flooding caused the creation of the scablands in eastern Washington state.
He was laughed out of the room because the geology establishment at the time absolutely refused to consider catastrophic causes of geological formation (believing that such ideas were only for crazy Bible thumpers). But decades later, he was eventually vindicated (in his lifetime, which must have been satisfying). It's a great story, and this is a fantastic account of it: https://www.amazon.com/Bretzs-Flood-Remarkable-Geologist-Greatest/dp/1570616310
I first became interested in the geology of the area when we were driving down the Columbia last summer after visiting glasater and the Man Trans in Walla Walla, and then found this book and others to look into it further. Totally fascinating.

henry, I don't see how, because the Mars channeled scablands are understood to be the products of massive outburst flooding, probably in the same way the WA scablands were formed, by the sudden draining of massive ancient glacial lakes.

Maybe a *currently existing* large body of water is what is new. That would make sense.

Well how else did they explain it, just because schiaperelli and Lowell were wrong in the interpretation.

Guys, here's a product I bet you didn't know you needed - velvet lapels to instantly transform any suit jacket into a tuxedo!

Glacial erosion and glacial runoff, narciso. But it didn't add up, because there simply wasn't enough water (under that theory) to generate the existing evidence.
Posted by: Porchlight | July 25, 2018 at 10:41 AM
Well it depends on the scale of time involved one would have to probe beneath the outer layer of mars to figure when it happened, most likely when it had a,thicker atmosphere.

Thanks so much Porch and others for book recommendations. The Bretz one sounds especially interesting.

shirley i know i aint no saint and that i have many obvious flaws and shortcomings. my chikayno homies and i call each other "Ese", which mispronounced is SA, short for our endearment of each other as "Supreme Asshole."
but we try hard. we still pray with good result. guess we don't pray enough for ourselves. but i digress.
Recent hardship: a close friend diagnosed with stage IV colo-rectal cancer.
i prayed. he's now cancer free. my prayer wasn't for a cure or anything of that sort. the situation moved me to pray, as do all conditions.
however, i've been taught to pray in a very specific way no matter what situational condition arises.
i have only one intention: help me stay out of the way and reflect on You-God, your 7 aspects.
Emmet Fox called it the Golden Key. Paw and i are prayer partners now for 12 years since the Chief Prayer Warrior in our family left her body--- Maw.
we asked in prayer how could we pick up the "colors" since she'd passed.
here's a good read on what found us, informed us, taught us to BE with prayer:

No offense taken.
You are probably right about the understanding part.
I admire the strength of those who have conquered addiction but I wouldn’t call it wisdom.

In my Paisan dialect, it's fulano like so and so. I was routing with the notion that a rich half Irish Argentine doctor would have anything in common with Mexican peasant who he despised, he didn't have an easy time with Bolivian tribesmen either.

narciso, time wasn't sufficient to explain it, according to Bretz.
DebinGA, welcome. I hope you read the book and enjoy it as much as I did. Bretz was a fascinating man - prickly, but completely devoted to his wife and his students, whose company he preferred above all others. Not too surprising, given the reception he got from his so-called colleagues.
He also loved adventure, practical jokes, a good yarn and a good beer-drinking saloon. And he was a wine enthusiast, but I won't spoil the fun surprises on that subject. I'm sure he would be thrilled to see the wine country developing in his treasured eastern Washington.

"I admire the strength of those who have conquered addiction but I wouldn’t call it wisdom"
hence, maryrose's need for understanding.
if the strength were to have come from me, i'd have been dead at 40, after 5 years of recovery.
as it is i've buried 38 AA fellows who had over 30 years of sobriety and fell to their deaths in year 31, but staggered along zombie-like until they couldn't stand up.
all of them revealed to me as i prepared their burial ceremonies "i don't have the strength to go on."
that's key. the strength comes from God (higher power whatevs).
"Wisdom to know..." IS required. "God- grant me the serenity, to accept the things i cannot change; to change the things i can; and the wisdom to KNOW the difference."
So there's that.
Suggestion: read the Big Book. the stories are timeless accounts of addiction to alcohol.
with proper study and interaction with "us" one can be disabused of unhelpful notions of "self-control", "will power", and other human traits which fail EVERYBODY no matter what degree they engage in "look goods" about the wakes they've left in the lives of innocents entrusted to their care.
alcohol was just one set of blinders we wore. when we sobered up there were zillions more to address which had nothing to do with alcohol, other than drink delayed our efforts to "sin no more."
i have faith that i won't be chided for replying ABOUT maryrose or mischaracterized for speaking up.
can't do anything about the "eyerolls." :D

Ext,
Knowing what little I do about your tastes, I was a bit surprised you didn't know about Government Mule previously. Not that there's anything wrong with it and this is nothing more than me thinking "Welp if I know about 'em, everybody does". Anyway enjoy!
