Atlantic Writer Cries Foul: Women Refs Can’t Find Fitting Uniforms

Women’s rights advocates have discovered their newest foe: sportswear companies.

The Atlantic relayed this troubling news in a July 25 article. Women, it seems, face problems finding fitting referee uniforms. Atlantic contributor Britni de la Cretaz pulled no punches, alluding to it as a case of “gender discrimination.”

Based on the testimonies of refs like Kitty Grubb and Ila Valcarcel, de la Cretaz observed that many sportswear companies “didn’t provide much clothing in women’s sizes” and that women like Grubb “tried to have her referee clothing tailored to fit,” though this does cost a fair amount.

This is apparently a “widespread problem,” and, as the magazine observed, “if a woman doesn’t look as polished as the men on her officiating team, she can immediately appear out of place—a perception women are already trying to shake.”

Is it a difficulty for women referees? Sure. But is this “gender discrimination” or a function of the market? De la Cretaz admitted that “the fields with limited clothing choices for women … tend to be ones in which women are underrepresented,” and even went on to say, “for many apparel companies, it doesn’t make business sense to carry items that don’t seem likely to sell well.”

In my understanding, propaganda can be true or false. It is the way it is used that makes it propaganda, not the quality of the information.

For example, wartime messages such as "loose lips sink ships" are true, but unquestionably (in my view) also propaganda.

But I did think twice about using it that way in that comment, so I hear where you're coming from. ;)

So,about children separated from their parents. This story is in the Manchester (NH) Union Leader...ICE will review the status of a woman from Uruguay who was arrested in 2017 and slated for deportation (fake documents) As an alternative, she was fitted with a GPS monitor. Her Massachusetts lawyer was helping her apply for DACA because she has five American born kids. Two of those kids, ages four and six, were "separated" from her when a Good Samaritan found them walking on Route 3 in southern NH. (very busy road) She told local police she knew the kids were outside unattended, but they were supposed to be at the playground. ICE said that in light of her arrest on local charges, her status is now under review. Her lawyer couldn't be reached for comment. *EYEROLL*

Henry, when my girls were in grade school, they told me that wasting water was going to ruin the earth and kill the polar bears. Yes, I would run the cold water while brushing my teeth, and I would run the hot water while shaving.

Oh the agony for both of them.

So, since we live but a mile away, I walked them down the street and through the woods to Great Falls Park where the Potomac River cascades with great violence over the falls. We walked out onto the catwalk projecting above the tumult.

Then I explained that once this water went over the falls and flowed past Georgetown and The Kennedy Center, its next stop was the Chesapeake Bay then the Atlantic Ocean. I explained to them that 100% of the entire region's drinking water had already been pulled out of the river upstream of the falls, so that the water they were watching was "extra" and would soon be mixed into the same ocean we share up on Nantucket.

Thus ended the lesson.

Sean Spicer book signing nixed over ‘political climate’

A book signing for former White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s “The Briefing” was scrapped by a BJ’s Wholesale Club in Massachusetts because of concerns about the “political climate,” a report said.

The bulk-shopping store in Seekonk put the kibosh on Saturday’s book event, one of more two dozen promotional stops for Spicer scheduled before the end of September, Fox News said on Tuesday.

“We got word last Friday the store was cancelling ‘due to the political climate,’’’ a spokesperson for Regnery Publishing told the news outlet. “Of course, we were very disappointed, but also surprised since we have had such a terrific response to all of the other events we have scheduled around the country.”

Clyburn: Ocasio-Cortez Should Wait Her Turn Before Trying to Join House Leadership

"I would ask her to remember how long I had to wait to get here," Clyburn said on Buzzfeed's "AM to DM."

Clyburn also said many younger activists don't have the proper respect for older ones, such as himself, who dealt with segregation and civil rights in the Jim Crow-era South.

"Let’s not forget the history of all of this," Clyburn said. "And I think that all of the folks who have that mentality seem not to give much respect to those of us who sat in jails, as I did, so that they would have the kind of activities or the kinds of rights that they have today."

"So do I get any credit for being on the cutting edge of all of that?" Clyburn asked. "Or should the credit go to my children and grandchildren who are the beneficiaries of it? I think that we have to balance this out."

Still race hustling after all...these years.

from insty: INSANE: Santa Barbara Authorizes Jail Time for Handing Out Straws.

Santa Barbara’s ordinance “is likely the most severe straw ban in the country,” according to Reason, but it’s far from the only straw ban. Seattle banned plastic straws earlier this month, mandating a a $250 fine for violators. Santa Barbara, however, has gone much further than Seattle — even aside from the harsher punishments its law imposes. Santa Barbara has banned not only plastic straws, but also compostable straws. Oh, and each individual straw counts as a separate infraction, meaning that if someone got busted handing out straws to a table of four people, he or she could end up facing years behind bars.

I love the straw bans. I want hundreds more stories about the straw bans between now and November.

Germans don’t drink their beer out of cans. (This is the country that’s home to the Reinheitsgebot, a beer purity law that has been enforced for over 500 years, after all.) Instead, they pay a deposit on bottles, which is refunded when they’re returned. But an ongoing heat wave throughout the country has discouraged people from bringing those bottles back in. And that’s causing problems.

Melania Trump Slams Fake News Report Claiming She Can’t Watch CNN

“On the first couple’s recent trip overseas, Melania Trump’s television aboard Air Force One was tuned to CNN,” the report from Maggie Haberman reads. “President Trump was not pleased.”

CNN, upon learning that somebody in America outside of those waiting at an airport, has their television tuned to their channel, couldn’t help but promote the story.

They even decided to seek comment from the First Lady’s office, where she immediately savaged them with a statement from her spokeswoman.

Mrs. Trump will watch “any channel she wants,” one portion of the statement reads.

The statement didn’t stop there, blasting CNN for being concerned about what is playing on television sets aboard Air Force One instead of contacting Mrs. Trump about her ‘Be Best’ initiative.

“Did you know that every 15 minutes a baby is born with NAS? Maybe you’d like to talk about the 160,000 kids who skip school every day for fear of being bullied, or that 280,000 students are physically attacked in schools every month,” spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said.

“Seems kind of silly to worry about what channel she watches on TV (any channel she wants btw) or if she heard some recording on the news.”

Trump Jr. Tells Teens His Mother Escaped Communism ‘For a Reason’

He asked the crowd why no one under socialism has advocated for it. He spoke of his grandmother who grew up in what was communist Czechoslovakia. He said his grandfather took him there when he was young every summer for six or eight weeks and he learned what it was like, calling it one of the most important lessons he ever learned.

“I got to see the opposite of what I saw in this country,” said Trump. “I learned not to take all of our incredible freedoms … for granted,” and that it was not an easy lesson for the son of a billionaire from New York city. He spoke of his grandmother being in distress when she sees people advocating for socialism on the news.

“My mother escaped from it for a reason,” said Trump, adding that it didn’t offer her opportunities, but rather the exact opposite.

Old Lurker

You know how to spoil a good yarn Ralph!

I did explain two other things in that lesson. First, per Henry's point, I did explain that all of the water I waste down the drain shaving actually finds its way back to the Potomac River at Blue Plains below National Airport, cleaner than when it went into the sewer.

The older child asked if it was not wasteful since the "city" had to treat the water before we could drink it, and before they dump it back into the river. I explained that yes, yes they do and for that, they charge me for each thousand gallons I use, and for the same amount they assume will become "sewage". And they charge us more per gallon "because we are rich", than they charge the poor people who live in Rockville, so the more we use, the more it helps the poor people afford clean water to drink at their houses. I went on, because that's the way I roll, to explain that in fact the "city" earns a profit on each thousand gallons, and then they collect a tax on top of that, so the more water I waste, the more people can get paychecks from the City, and that is good for poor people and for lazy people who work for the government, both.

They grew up to be good Conservatives.

Kevlar Kid

nter of the escalating Trump-Cohen saga is the question of whether Cohen ever engaged in, or was privy to, illegal activity on behalf of his client. On its own, the tape that Davis released to CNN falls short of answering these questions. When news broke of the payments to McDougal and Stormy Daniels, an adult-film star to whom Cohen disbursed a $130,000 hush-money payment shortly before the election, legal experts wondered whether the outlays may have violated campaign-finance laws. And while the recording certainly provides details surrounding American Media’s payment to McDougal, Rick Hasen, a law professor at U.C. Irvine, and an expert on campaign-finance law, suggested it didn’t provide any conclusions. “If you are looking for a smoking gun, this isn’t it.” Hasen continued that while the tape “certainly provides enough of a reason to engage in further investigation,” it doesn’t establish that the payments were campaign-related or illuminate Trump’s state of mind at the time. Sol Wisenberg, who served as deputy prosecutor in the Starr investigation, agreed. “Based on what has been released so far, I don’t see evidence of a crime by President Trump,” he told me.

But as Jeffress noted in our conversation, the ease with which Cohen and Trump discuss the payment to McDougal suggests that this is not the first time they have broached the topic. “Obviously, they have had prior conversations about it,” he told me, matter-of-factly. If that is the case, “it forecloses certain arguments that the president’s team could have,” Mariotti told me. “It means that they can’t argue that he had no knowledge, or that he wasn’t familiar with the transaction.

I have a very hard time believing Tracy was bi or gay. Just don't look it. There have been multiple attempted co-options of Grant as well, so I find this old gay guy's memoir to be questionable.

Hepburn may have been bi, but she and Tracy were a legend. It is sort of pathetic to be co-opting heroes where there is little to no evidence.

As to the nature of addiction, medically it is considered a spectrum of diseases. There are behavioral components, but the real bugger is in the way serotonin levels get jacked about. An excess of serotonin is present in schizophrenia and a low level of serotonin is sen with Parkinson's disease.

The roles of serotonin and dopamine within the brain are still poorly understood. 50% of your serotonin ends up in your stomach and they still don't know why or how it interacts.

In addiction and mental illness treatment one has to treat the whole person; the biomedical, the psychological, and the spiritual. There are over 2,000 per reviewed scientific papers that document the effects of spirituality on outcomes, almost all of them positive.

Chemical detox takes only a short period of time, usually a week. But the neurological detox and re-wiring that is needed takes from 1-2 years and relapse is simply a part of the recovery process. There are those who get off and stay off, but they are rare. The operative motto is "I am not doing too well on my own, so I might want to ask for outside help". Faith or spirituality also plays its part.

But in mental illness, getting on the right meds and then having that talk or other therapy is critical to recovery.

The individual may never be quite the same, but adherence to a recovery protocol will reduce the recurrence of psychosis or other symptoms.

We know more now than we ever have about addiction and mental illnesses, but we know so little still.

Thai boys rescued from cave become Buddhist novices

Eleven rescued Thai boys and members of the Wild Boars football team and coach Ekkapol Chantawong (left) were ordained Wednesday as novice Buddhist monks at the Wat Phra That Doi Tung temple in the Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai. The Thai boys were rescued from deep inside a flooded cave in a dramatic mission on July 10.

While the boys were trapped inside the cave, their families were praying for their safety. These families made a promise that if the boys were returned to them safely, they would be ordained.

After the rescue, the boys themselves pledged to join the monastery to honor Kunan, who had died trying to save them. It is considered one of the highest forms of tribute in Theravada Buddhism (the most common school of Buddhism in Thailand) to be ordained in honor of someone else.

State Rep. Matt Caldwell’s 15-second advertisement features him skeet shooting and saying, “I like guns. I love the Second Amendment. And I support our president. That’s why I’m endorsed by the NRA.”

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Caldwell’s campaign claimed his advertisement was censored by Facebook because of the site’s “liberal agenda.” Facebook’s advertising policies prohibit advertisements that “promote the sale or use of weapons, ammunition, or explosives.”

A Facebook spokesperson later told the Times, “We review millions of ads each week and sometimes we make mistakes. We have overturned the incorrect decision and the ads are now running live on Facebook.”

VICE Admits: Twitter Is Shadowbanning Conservatives, Mainstream Republicans

The Republican Party chair Ronna McDaniel, several conservative Republican congressmen, and Donald Trump Jr.’s spokesman no longer appear in the auto-populated drop-down search box on Twitter, VICE News has learned. It’s a shift that diminishes their reach on the platform — and it’s the same one being deployed against prominent racists to limit their visibility. The profiles continue to appear when conducting a full search, but not in the more convenient and visible drop-down bar. (The accounts appear to also populate if you already follow the person.)

Democrats are not being “shadow banned” in the same way, according to a VICE News review. McDaniel’s counterpart, Democratic Party chair Tom Perez, and liberal members of Congress — including Reps. Maxine Waters, Joe Kennedy III, Keith Ellison, and Mark Pocan — all continue to appear in drop-down search results. Not a single member of the 78-person Progressive Caucus faces the same situation in Twitter’s search.
