The Trump-Cohen tape is out on CNN and this "cash' element of the controversy is crazy:

Cohen told Trump about his plans to set up a company and finance the purchase of the rights from American Media, which publishes the National Enquirer.

 

"I need to open up a company for the transfer of all of that info regarding our friend David," Cohen said in the recording, likely a reference to American Media head David Pecker.

 

Trump interrupts Cohen asking, "What financing?" according to the recording. When Cohen tells Trump, "We'll have to pay." Trump is heard saying "pay with cash" but the audio is muddled and it's unclear whether he suggests paying with cash or not paying. Cohen says, "no, no" but it is not clear what is said next.

 

No payment was ever made from Trump, Rudy Giuliani, the President's attorney, has said. Giuliani has previously acknowledged that the recorded discussion related to the buying the story rights.

 

And then...

 

Davis later added: "Ladies and gentlemen, if you voted for Donald Trump, listen to the tape and ask yourself: Is Donald Trump lying when he said he didn't use the word 'cash' and accuses Michael Cohen of using the word 'cash'? Cohen has been disparaged. Cohen has been insulted and called all sorts of things by people around Donald Trump."

 

Alan Futerfas, a lawyer for the Trump Organization, refuted that the tape shows Trump was offering a cash payment.

 

"Whoever is telling Davis that cash in that conversation refers to green currency is lying to him," Futerfas told CNN. "There's no transaction done in green currency. It doesn't happen. The whole deal never happened. If it was going to happen, it would be a payment to a large company that would obviously be accompanied by an agreement of sale. Those documents would be prepared by lawyers on both sides."

 

Cash, in the conversation, was in reference to how a deal would be financed, Futerfas added.

"The word cash came up in the context of the distinction between financing, which is referenced, and no financing, which means a full payment, a total one-time payment. That's the context in which the word cash is used," he said. "Anyone who knows anything about the company or how the President does business knows there is no green cash. Everything is documented. Every penny is documented."

 

I refuse to doublecheck but I am confident Cohen had a contract with Ms. MacDougal, or Stormy, or both. No mention of a suitcase with unmarked twenties of a bag of Trump Casino chips.

 

Cohen's lawyer was more colorful:

 

Davis told Cuomo the tape clearly shows that it’s Trump who says “cash” and declared, “Richard Nixon couldn’t spin the tape that did him in, and there’s no way that Mr. Giuliani, who knows from being U.S. Attorney, the only people who use cash are drug dealers and mobsters. Cash is not what you do, and it was Michael Cohen who said, ‘No, no, no, no.’ And Donald Trump, despite what Rudy Giuliani said publicly, the tape contradicts Mr. Giuliani and the word ‘cash’ is heard by everyone.”

 

Well. On Wall Street people talk about cash financing all time and never mean green bills. I have even bought a car in a "cash deal", or at least, in a deal that involved neither a lease nor any financing (Yeah, that's how us high rollers roll. Four year old Highlander, but whatever...). And it's not just me!

I've known more than a few small businessman who prefer to operate on a cash basis; one was a European immigrant who had a really good cash business going repairing TVs in the days when you repaired a TV rather than simply replaced it. I doubt that he declared more than 50% o his actual receipts. My local hobby shop dealer will take plastic, but he also does a lot cash transactions.

In my day job before I retired,I wrote a lot of agreements to either buy a subsidiary for the corporation I worked for--or later sell them off. Lots of contracts, but not a green back in sight. And most of those transactions were "cash" in the sense that a check was drawn on a corporate treasury. It was a pain in the neck to do a joint venture with a partner who wanted to finance their share. You would up messing around with a bank and the bank's lawyers and the financing agreement. Complicated things tremendously and was a waste of my client's time and effort. Made the bank happy though.

I happen to be familiar with an Ultrasonographer. This person used to be on call all of the time. This person would often get called out at night or on holidays to presumably examine gall bladders.

Or if they do actually have gall stones or something else wrong chances are nothing is happening that night. For one thing, they just ate.

BUT--I am not praying that you two "get together someday," because your initial post about breaking up still concerns me. As does the blame on work. There are reasons that precipitate behavior, sure, but people are still responsible for the behavior. And their words as well.

Jim, from what I have read to date I have no problem with thinking it's mainly self medication of brain pathways that ARE malleable, but do get "set in." How set in likely determines whether you need some exercise and meditation to get better---works for a ton of people if they are patient---or a reset with electricity--ECT.

I need to re-read it. Written by a fellow about ten-fifteen years older than us, who has lived through basically all of modern psychiatry by virtue of that fact--starting w Freudean analysis, through the (most fervent hope!) of biochemical imbalance that could be treated w drugs, to reach the conclusions he has.

Now, the role psylocybin plays in alleviating depression and anxiety with just one or two exposures is fascinating and extremely promising, especially for people who have an existential component to their suffering. Very effective for alcohol abuse.

Most describe profound spiritual experiences that leave them at peace.

Count me in among the never tried any drugs group. In high school & college I was too clueless to know where to even get hold of anything illegal, and too socially awkward to try anyway.

That, and the couple of times I've been prescribed serious pain medication, I hated the way it made me feel; and the one time I was tried an antidepressant I started having panic attacks, so that was that.

And there's alcoholism in my family - father, uncle and (I think) grandfather, and I believe it killled all three of them. So that's always been in my mind. I do drink, but never more that two drinks in a night. The last time I was actually drunk was in college, and not remembering what I did or how I got home scared the hell out of me.

Good Morning! Yesterday an 18 year man on the Univ.of Maine football team collapsed and died during practice. It wasn't unusually hot yesterday,but the humidity was miserable. The Univ. of Maine hasn't had a death since the program started in 1896. The young man was from Virginia.

As to spirituality, all of the 12 step programs that I have been to have stated that they are spiritual programs. For those having trouble with this concept, I usually state Good Orderly Direction or Group Of Druggies.

Do you understand what I'm saying? I look down at addicts as weak, but am I really morally above them because I didn't succumb. I don't think so.

I have usually encountered this mentality at churches. I use the "For ALL have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God" to help level the playing field. I believe everyone is an addict - addicted to sin. This is not for condemnation but for realization.
