The Trump-Cohen tape is out on CNN and this "cash' element of the controversy is crazy:
Cohen told Trump about his plans to set up a company and finance the purchase of the rights from American Media, which publishes the National Enquirer.
"I need to open up a company for the transfer of all of that info regarding our friend David," Cohen said in the recording, likely a reference to American Media head David Pecker.
Trump interrupts Cohen asking, "What financing?" according to the recording. When Cohen tells Trump, "We'll have to pay." Trump is heard saying "pay with cash" but the audio is muddled and it's unclear whether he suggests paying with cash or not paying. Cohen says, "no, no" but it is not clear what is said next.
No payment was ever made from Trump, Rudy Giuliani, the President's attorney, has said. Giuliani has previously acknowledged that the recorded discussion related to the buying the story rights.
And then...
Davis later added: "Ladies and gentlemen, if you voted for Donald Trump, listen to the tape and ask yourself: Is Donald Trump lying when he said he didn't use the word 'cash' and accuses Michael Cohen of using the word 'cash'? Cohen has been disparaged. Cohen has been insulted and called all sorts of things by people around Donald Trump."
Alan Futerfas, a lawyer for the Trump Organization, refuted that the tape shows Trump was offering a cash payment.
"Whoever is telling Davis that cash in that conversation refers to green currency is lying to him," Futerfas told CNN. "There's no transaction done in green currency. It doesn't happen. The whole deal never happened. If it was going to happen, it would be a payment to a large company that would obviously be accompanied by an agreement of sale. Those documents would be prepared by lawyers on both sides."
Cash, in the conversation, was in reference to how a deal would be financed, Futerfas added.
"The word cash came up in the context of the distinction between financing, which is referenced, and no financing, which means a full payment, a total one-time payment. That's the context in which the word cash is used," he said. "Anyone who knows anything about the company or how the President does business knows there is no green cash. Everything is documented. Every penny is documented."
I refuse to doublecheck but I am confident Cohen had a contract with Ms. MacDougal, or Stormy, or both. No mention of a suitcase with unmarked twenties of a bag of Trump Casino chips.
Cohen's lawyer was more colorful:
Davis told Cuomo the tape clearly shows that it’s Trump who says “cash” and declared, “Richard Nixon couldn’t spin the tape that did him in, and there’s no way that Mr. Giuliani, who knows from being U.S. Attorney, the only people who use cash are drug dealers and mobsters. Cash is not what you do, and it was Michael Cohen who said, ‘No, no, no, no.’ And Donald Trump, despite what Rudy Giuliani said publicly, the tape contradicts Mr. Giuliani and the word ‘cash’ is heard by everyone.”
Well. On Wall Street people talk about cash financing all time and never mean green bills. I have even bought a car in a "cash deal", or at least, in a deal that involved neither a lease nor any financing (Yeah, that's how us high rollers roll. Four year old Highlander, but whatever...). And it's not just me!
Buying a Car: Should You Pay With Cash if You Can?
It may seem like a smart idea: You're buying a car, and you can afford to write one check for the entire vehicle, which means you'll never have to make a payment. You should go ahead and do that, right? Not necessarily. We explain why it isn't always a great idea to buy a car with cash, even if you can afford to do so.
Wait, what? Buy with cash by "writing a check"? Whatever could that mean?
As to the notion that only drug dealers and mobsters use actual cash, hmm - maybe that is why so many people are afraid of their plumber. It's not Trump, it's the tax evasion! I guess Mr. Davis has never met a small businessman who sometimes mis-estimates his business receipts, at least as far as tax reporting goes. I've heard it happens.
Well. I have thought for a while we were at least making progress through the foothills on the way to Peak Stupid. Now I'm wondering if we are stuck on Mesa Stupid.
BUT THEN AGAIN! Can't spell "Mensa" without "Mesa"!

Frances Gallegos, 33, faces a charge of kidnapping and was booked into the Bexar County Jail on a $150,000 bond. Larry Gallegos, 38, faces charges of aggravated kidnapping and trafficking of persons. He was booked into the Bexar County Jail on a $300,000 bond.
Their arrests follow that of Laura Garcia, 35, who was arrested Thursday on aggravated kidnapping and trafficking of persons charges.

I picked this up in the comments on Conservative Treehouse. It's a little long, but it's a pretty good recap!
SUMMARY: Do you realize, in the last 30 hours.
1. President Trump dropped a MOAB on the state of Georgia for Brian Kemp, and wiped the floor with the establishment GOPe, winning by 39 points.
2. President Travels to Kansas City, giving the speech which made us all cry, to the VFW. Embraces a 94 year old Sargeant and we immediately fall in love.
3. Our sheer perfection of a FLOTUS stops in Nashville at a children’s hospital. On the way back CNN reporter asks Stephanie Grisham about the Cohen tapes and tries to take a hit on Melania. Stephanie Grisham came UNDONE and wiped the floor with the little witch.
4. VP Pence in Montana, stops what he is doing, leaves is Secret Service, when a boy waiting to see him on the tarmac passes out. VP Pence was “up and in the middle” of the problem. Good man.
5. CRTV does a parody video about Alexandria Cortez and the left reveals —- they have no sense of humor.
Busted.
6. President Trump meets with John-Claude Junker, President of the EU Commission and makes the deal of a lifetime on tariffs, LNG sales to Europe, and soybeans for the midwest.
7. DOW spikes 170 points in an hour on news of the trade deal. Business channels who support multi-nationals are in melt-down……. cuz they’ve been hyping a trade war for 6 months.
8. Facebook earnings post, stock loses 24% of market cap in an hour. That’s what happens when you put Ellen Stover and our friends in Facebook jail.
Payback is hell.
9. Secretary Pompeo testifies to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and I swear, it’s probably the best 3 hours of footage, EVER. He was brilliant.
************
At one point, Pompeo asked if he could be allowed to submit, for the record, the list of all the things Trump Admin has done to be ‘tough’ on the Russians.
Turd of a Senator agrees.
Pompeo says, “Well then, let’s back the truck up to deliver (his list).”
************
OMG…..
Killed it.
10. CNN releases recorded tape of Michael Cohen and President Trump—- and it’s a dud. We learned President Trump says “thank you” when he asks for a Coke.
11. CNN reporter refuses to leave the Oval Office during Junker presser and is pushed out and reprimanded by Bill Shine (new WH Press Coordinator) and Sarah Sanders. She keeps asking questions about the Cohen tape when Junker and Trump are in the midst of a trillion dollar trade deal. WH tells her she is not allowed into the next Rose Garden event, and she gets snippy, saying, “I wasn’t planning on attending anyway”.
White House Press Corps has a meltdown.
CNN issues statement saying “We demand better” and gets hammered on social media.
12. Ben Sasse, who was censured by his own Nebraska GOP party by a vote of 400 to 8 said yesterday, “Trump’s trade policies are ‘Making America 1929 Again'” in an attempt to undermine the President ahead of the Junker negotiations.
This afternoon…..
Sasse announced he will not run for reelection in 2020.
Bwwwhhahaaaaa.
13. News from China senses discord among the ruling class. China is now lowering interest rates, subsidizing industry, and their economy is flat.
Did I mention their stock market is down about 25% this year?
14. And finally, 11 member of the House file impeachment papers against Rosenstein. The vote will probably not ever happen…… but it sure does piss off Rosenstein.
It tastes sweet.
15. And for the Bonus:
Trump has learned how to ‘thread’ multiple tweets on Twitter. May God have mercy upon his enemies.
Can’t wait until tomorrow……..
Remember, he was in Helsinki, just 8 days ago.
=================================
#12 I missed the stuff about Sasse! YAY!

Had a young wounded red shoulder hawk hanging out next door this morning. After an hour of calls I finally made contact with the raptor expert to find out what we could do. Assassination Markets Let Augur Users Gamble on Trump Murder
Everyone knew that it was inevitable that assassination markets would quickly pop up on decentralized prediction market platform Augur, but that doesn't make the fact that users are now betting on whether U.S. President Donald Trump will be assassinated by the end of the year any less jarring.
Yet this market exists, and, though not the most popular bet on Augur, more than 50 shares have been traded on it as of the time of writing. Similar markets, moreover, exist for a number of other public figures, allowing users to gamble on whether 96-year-old actress Betty White and U.S. Senator John McCain -- who has been diagnosed with brain cancer -- will survive until Jan. 1, 2019.

I have huge praise for the story of the Thai Cave kids becoming novitiate monks in honor and thankfulness for their salvation from their ordeal and in honor of the dead Thai Navy Seal who died trying to rescue them. In our country our media would be carving them apart looking for sensational human interest stories to damn this guy or that guy, but I consider their collective decision as immensly honorable, and I love that the story tells us that there was a single Christian among the bunch who did not join in
Novitiate. That has to have been the single non-citizen who was rescued as an orphan and raised by some Baptist Missionaries, thus learning English and thus becommming invaluable in being able to speak in English to their initial rescuers. I have nothing but praise for these young men regardless of religion.

Shortly after noon on April 6, 1979, 78-year-old Jack Sasson was robbed and shot five times in the carport of his home in West Los Angeles, California.
Three weeks later, Sasson died of his wounds. By that time, 18-year-old Kash Register had been charged with the shooting after two witnesses, Brenda Anderson and Elliott Singleton, picked Register’s photograph out of a photographic lineup.

SAUSALITO, Calif. (KGO) -- An African-American man says he and his family were kicked out of a Bay Area store after trying on hats and clothes. He took cellphone video of the incident, which has now gone viral. Anthony O'Neill took the cell video at Quest Casuals in Sausalito on Sunday. The video is 8 minutes long and has more than 90,000 views on Facebook. At the beginning of the video, the store owner, Hooshang Seda, can be seen and heard saying, "I am not after trouble Sir. I am asking you to leave because I refuse to do business with you."

Not sure what that means but I'm thinking maybe my ex-but-I-hope-not-permanently girlfriend and I should both feel insulted?

Somebody posted this before. The reporting of government spending to a central government web site is inaccurate.
Is this sloppy reporting of spending data, or do we not know what government spending is going on. Do they really follow budgets? Is our national debt a real number?

the Monitor, the Merrimack
The latter was mis-remembered by history. Actually the Virginia
You forgot to Remember the Maine, and the Lusitania, Arizona, and Pueblo--but I prefer ships that weren't sunk or captured. Sink the Bismarck.
Nelson's Victory, which still exists.
There was a zeppelin named Zeppelin.

The dreadnought was a new type of ship. All big guns and steam turbine propulsion. It became the new model to equal in power and speed.

Actually I'm pretty sure the USS Kim's beam exceeds that of the Dreadnought's by a fair bit.
Not sure I'd say the Dreadnought didn't actually do anything. It may not have had much battle experience but it kinda revolutionized battleship and cruiser design.
Besides the name by itself was cool enough for fame.

Was it really an accident though?
A German serial killer who murdered five female hitchhikers accidentally killed himself while performing a strange solo sex act in his prison cell over the weekend, reports claim.
Egidius Schiffer, dubbed the “Aachen Strangler,” gave himself a fatal electric shock after tying a cable from a lamp around his penis and nipples, police said.

Iggy,
It was a direct result of this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Tsushima
This was the famous battle where the Japanese crossed the "T" of the Russian fleet. All of the Japanese ships could concentrate their fire on the nearest ships. The Russian ships in the rear were of little use.
The Japanese turned 180 degrees and crossed the the "T" again. It was a major victory. Prior thought had been to have mixed gun sizes on ships because they expected battles to be closer fought and the smaller guns had a higher rate of fire.
Once it became common knowledge after this battle that engagements were likely to occur at greater distances, the faster-firing, but shorter-range guns were deemed useless on top of the line ships.
Britain just happened to build the first new battleship.
It started such an expensive arms race that they eventually developed a treaty to limit the number of battleships.

And, yeah, Dreadnought, is a really cool name. It kind of suggests this ship is afraid of nothing.
Five years later it was surpassed by other designs.

And after Pearl Harbor, the battleship was no longer the most lethal ship in any naval service. Aircraft Carriers became the most powerful ships in terms of reach.
You could sink a ship from hundreds of miles away. It was an unexpected paradigm-shift, a Black Swan event, if you like, and that's why today our navy is based on carrier groups.
We continued to build battleships, but their supremacy was gone.
While I worry about China outbuilding us in warships, without a fair number of aircraft carriers, they are primarily a South China Sea fleet. Not a world naval power.
