Wasn't the G&T first consumed in India when Brit soldiers started mixing it with their daily dose of anti malarial quinine?

Greetings from Mineta airport.

So now Brennan is out there on the talk shows telling u he's going to fight for the rights of the revolving door army to keep their security clearances. He sounded deranged. I don't think this is going to end well for him.

Miss Marple

daddy,

I don't know for sure. Josephine Tey's dissection of the situation was quite good.

My earliest reading of this was in Thomas Costaine's series on the history of the Plantagnets. The four books in the series are:

The Conquering Family
The Magnificent Centruy
The Three Edwards
The Last of the Plantagenets

It starts with William the Conqueror and goes through Richard III. Includes stuff like Robin Hood, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Edward the Confessor and the constuction of Canterbury Cathedral, etc.

It's very easy to read because Costaine was also a novelist (wrote things like The Silver Chalice, which was made into a movie in the 1950's, most famous for Tony Curtis' line "Yonda is my faddar's castle."

It's out of print and commanding a pretty penny for the 4-book set on ebay ($85.00) but you might be able to find it at your library.

I first read this in high school because my mother, an Anglophile of the worst sort, bought the books in paperback and spent many a night reading them. When she was done with them, I picked them up. Great series!

Brennan has a lot to answer for. There's something seriously wrong with a system where creeps like him and Mueller can attain high security responsibilities.

Where can an aspiring medical student go for information re supply/demand for medical occupations specialties on a county by county basis?

How might medical degree granting institutions go about articulating precise "training contracts" with said county health admins to provide slots for medical students, to establish a relationship within respective counties so that they might return as an program graduate, provide services while completing their reqs for MD licensing?

it might take longer to get the license, but the "student" would have racked up legitimate"billable hours" that could applied to reducing the credit tab that financed their education; instead of ambiguous "time served" summaries of how they fulfilled nebulous requirements for loan/tuition forgiveness.

cooperative education paid off a lot of student loans for undergraduate engineers and aggies where i was employed 1981-1990. the model is cut and paste for any specialty (yes, i know medicine is pretty high falutin and sets itself apart as a specialty--- but medical professionals would be the heart and soul AND the oversight factors in such a programmatic approach.)

There is no way that a time-bound commitment of 2 years working in Coon Ball Falls justifies a "free" medical education. All that money, loaned or gifted by some endowment, has a cost attached to it and somebody will pay for that down the road. Educating medical pros who pay off their credit liabilities converts their loan into an investment generating asset (their career). But to enable a poverty mindset, where money is tied up over time just to become a liability somebody else will have to assume? That's pure socialism as i define it.

How is the aspiring medical student who is going to spend some 7-10 years net "figuring out what to specialize in" any different than the high school graduate who assumes a $100k student loan burden in a Grievance Studies degree program?

Both are trending in the direction of "loan forgiveness" en masse. Same problematic pattern.

In no way am i making light of the sacrifices of either class of "student." Sacrifices and such therein are real, although relative in scale.

Bottom line: people who think of education as an investment in themselves, but who do not have a plan to actually PAY for it, instead of walking away from the contract (the loans) which makes it not an investment at all--- it's simply a poorly cast liability.

Someone will have to pay at some time--- and two years working in Hobo Gulch isn't going to do diddly in terms of paying the cost to be their own boss in MedicineLand.

Old Lurker

Great questions, Jack.

Yes, our weather sucks today after two weeks of really hot and humid weather which also sucked, just differently.

The trick with YL2 was to support her dream to dance, but to have her understand from the seventh grade on that with incredibly rare exceptions like Martha Graham and one or two others, the odds were that virtually ALL dancers live two thirds of their lives after their dance lives are over, and even that assumes they can find jobs after about age 20 and that their bodies don't break by 25. We made no secret that our jobs as her parents were to support her dreams, but to FORCE attention to how she would live a valuable life worthy of her gifts after the dream ended, which it surely would. We said often that all good parents want to have their kids keep as many options open to them until life and the passage of time starts to close them for her. In the early years, that meant holding her feet to the highest, hardest academic middle and high school standards in all the "hard" courses, even as we found her time to train for dance. Fortunately she was already "wired" to have to excel at everything including academics and that made it easier for her parents to hold that line.

We thought her interests would be in math (talk to DrJ about the intersection of math and music which everybody knows, but realize that dance is right in there too at that level of "brain" stuff.)

She danced for about ten years right out of high school, and toward the end she was taking classes at Columbia in pursuit of the standard BS. Even as she rose through the out of this world level of hard math, she took other STEM courses and to our surprise, announced that after dancing she wanted to become a doctor. Why I have no idea. I think her real goal was to see if she could become the most expensive daughter ever raised...

Two observations: she tells us often how grateful she is that we handled it that way because these days she sees what her dancer friends are left with who were not forced by somebody to consider the 2/3 of her life after her dream. The second thing is to marvel at how many of her dancer friends who did suffer real parenting, are now, in their early thirties, doctors themselves.

Frederick might be more like YL1. YL1 always had interests like Frederick and was a top student in all things too. Her passion was competitive swimming and she was recruited for that and went to Penn as a swimmer. Same parents, so same talks about "that's nice honey, but what will you do with your life worthy of your gifts once the stronger younger faster swimmers kick you out of the pool?" Though recruited as a swimmer, we paid retail so after two years when she determined that there simply was not enough time to swim and take all the labs her by then Neuroscience Major demanded, she told us she was giving up swimming. My mission accomplished. A BS and a PhD later, she became the master of slicing mouse brains into thin slides and publishing the results.

Somewhere in that stream you might find some gems for Frederick.

re litigating security clearance revocation---

Brennan and his fanboy loias possess a retrograde understanding of both the intent and content of the Constitution.

it's just one more slime tactic. and it will fail. i hope Schmuck Brennan takes it all the way to the SCOTUS and they (metaphor alert)"shoot him in the face" publicly.

what will his army of loias do when it's revealed more definitively that Brennan is a dyed in the wool liar and co-conspirator w/in this Cabal being protected by Mulla Mueller?

POTUS has this way of taking decisive action that not only accomplishes the stated objective (these security clearances need to be revoked); POTUS draws the line behind all of these snakes.

Kev "There is no way that a time-bound commitment of 2 years working in Coon Ball Falls justifies a "free" medical education."

Who said it did? That would be silly.

The subject was how some rich guys decided to donate their own money so that students at NYU could attend Med School tuition free. No socialism in sight there. Other rich guys decide to donate their money to, say Peter Strozk. No socialism there, either. Simply private people spending their own money.

The military decided a long time ago that it was in its interest to train people to fly planes in return for a promise to fly them for the military for some time period that made economic sense to the military. Not socialism. The military also decided a long time ago that it would send soldiers to medical school in return for working for them X years until they thought the costs equaled the benefits to the military. Ditto with JAG lawyers. In every case the "contract" was set at the equilibrium point of cost v benefits to the service writing the check. Not socialism.

Sure, if you want to construct a straw man where anybody can become a doctor for life in return for working for two years at Coon Ball Falls using free government money, then that for sure is the worst form of socialism because it does indeed grab assets from others to waste them on a select few with no sense of balance between the costs and the benefits, and no agreement from the guys forking over their money.

Thanks for the yummy info to satisfy my love of history.

Consider this: My gr gr grandfather (1787 SC- ~1855 TN) was considered Cherokee (degree unknown) by family and neighbors. He moved to eastern TN from northern GA with extended families right before the Trail of Tears, probably to avoid it. Several of his grandchildren went to IT and applied for membership (1870-1907). Despite having witnesses who had been admitted to the Cherokee Nation--no one was accepted.
Jump to 1902 West TX when my maternal grandparents married. My grandfather was never accepted by his in-laws and was berated as a half-breed. It didn't help, of course, that my grandmother's grandfather had been scalped and killed by raiding Comanches during the Civil War.

I'm sure my story is not so unusual. All I know is, I enjoy being an American mutt with a history back to the Rev. War and before.

Here is an idea. Let student debt be part of bankruptcy

Here's a better idea: get the Federal Government totally out of the business of student lending - no direct loans, no loan guarantees, no nothing.

All the "free" Federal money has been the single biggest factor - by far - in driving up college costs.

It's a vicious cycle, which anyone with the slightest understanding of economics (or just plain old human nature) can see. If you dump free money into the system in massive amounts, with no qualification other than a pulse and an acceptance letter, colleges are going to massively raise costs, and use that money to enrich themselves (and of course their administrators). Which will in turn require more students to take on more debt, which of course requires yet more free Federal money, and more Federal workers to administer it, which further drives up college costs...

If the Federal free money spigot is shut off, college costs will drop, and quickly, and dramatically. They have to - there aren't enough families out there who can pay the costs out of pocket; parents aren't going to take second mortgages on their houses (if they even own them) without taking a very hard look at what they'll be paying for; and there aren't enough private lenders who will take on the risk of issuing the amount of unguaranteed loans that would be needed to make up the shortfall (especially if they are also, as you say, made dischargeable in bankruptcy).

If schools don't dramatically lower costs in that scenario, they will go out of business. It's that simple.

KK

not sure if this will be helpful. Recruitment of doctors to Coon Ball Falls costs money. recruitment often involves Loans for the first year of practice that are forgiven over the next 2-3 years. Guaranteed salaries regardless of how many patients that are seen are common as well for the first coupl4e of years. It is not a lot different to loan someone up front for their medical education and forgive the loan over 2-3 years. There is shortage, or poor distribution of doctors depending how one looks at it. So some communities or health systems may see it as trading value for value.

Medical post graduate training is not a cake walk either. Like everything else it is based on past performance. the top 25% of the class will likely get to choose their specialty. the bottom 25 % may not get their first pick. there are only so many residency slots.

Doctors have to pass written exams(boards)as they progress through training and also complete a year of internship or residency to be eligible for a license. very few doctors have the luxury of taking years to decide their specialty. And once you have slogged through a residency very few want to do it again for another specialty. post graduate training requires volume and adult supervision, usually found only at large teaching hospitals, to develop anything close to good medical judgement in doctors.

In the army I spent two years after my internship working as an independent general medical officer before returning for my last 4 yeas of residency training. those years really drove home how little medical wisdom I possessed at that point in my career. I would not recommend it as a wise practice and I don't think the Army does this anymore.

There is a lot of room for improvement, and a lot of pig headed "but this is how we have always done it" but there is also some time tested social Darwinism in medical training.
