Notice the "we" in the title. Even though TM doesn't often comment, Insty's open thread title's never imply that he even might. I think last night's was "Make me proud."
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the idea than there is a Facebook algorithm (singular) a huge misunderstanding? I always assume that they've got a whole collection of (shifting) inter-related algorithms which they apply to FB content to examine and distill out all sorts of different information. The idea that the FB algorithm will be revealed seems sort of like thinking that there's gold-at the end of the rainbow to be found.
JM H, the algorithm isn't even interesting per se: any Machine Learning algorithm is a jumble of statistics on thousands of variables which cannot be sorted out. The key is the "training set(s)" -- the data used to score the algorithm and tune it. This is especially true on classification algorithms (good vs bad). That part requires intent. That part humans can understand, in fact can easily understand.
The "algorithm" is a program, that surely links to a database. If there's a table of conservative media outlets in that database, and the program uses that table to downgrade their content, that would be a blockbuster.
According to Google, they're much more subtle and rank media outlets based on their website designs. Daily Caller apparently has a much worse design than Mother Jones, for example. No bias involved!
So it turns out that estimate of casualties is as bogus as anything that came out of carmen yulins mouth, like the crocodile tears out of the st. Bernard parish out of katrina.
My TV is on, as always on Fox Biz and the McCain funeral is playing with no interruption.
I must say that the two speakers I've seen so far have been fabulous, funny and heartfelt. Audience is laughing and clapping. Seems like that is what a funeral should be like - love him or not.
Pfft. My TV is always on,and usually on FBS, I changed the channel to the US Open. Great match on Kerber v Larsen. I'm not sure exactly what he said as I'm working and paying sparse attention to background noise. :)
I used to have mine on at work too, but never looked at it. It seemed like every time I turned it off some YUGE news would break.
One day I turned around and looked at the screen. An ad was playing that I'd heard 1000 times, and I was downright shocked at what was on the screen. In my mind it was no way like that. Blew me away.
McCain viewed their (Schmidt and Wallace) lack of discretion as a betrayal, and it led to a six-year estrangement with Schmidt. The senator said publicly at the time that he would not see the movie, calling the book “completely biased.”
”I don’t understand, even in the tough world of politics, why there continues to be such an assault on a good and decent person,” he said, referring to Palin. “I admired and respect her. I'm proud of our campaign.” When Fox News host Chris Wallace pressed him about Schmidt’s remark that he regretted his involvement in Palin’s selection, McCain replied: “I regret that he would make such a statement.”
...
“That cathedral will be filled with people who stabbed McCain in the front. Schmidt and Nicolle and Weaver stabbed him in the back and you can’t find a single McCain loyalist who will say different or feels different,” said one of the people familiar with the guest list and funeral arrangements.

Strange. Sarah Palin was the only one who didn't turn on McCain. Perhaps the organizers felt she might upstage "the main event."

GUS! watching yet another documentary on the rise of Third Reich.... the funeral depravity reminds me of Goebbels' penchant to turn every event, organic or created, into a way of projecting the party's power into every grain of culture. Serious question. What did McCain do so as to have this maudlin days long display of grief??
Will we have this when Lois Lerner bites the big one???
McCAIN was our employee, not our King.
Sitting in his seat, a seat broad and broken
In, sprinkled with ashes,
Pop switches channels, takes another
Shot of Seagrams, neat, and asks
What to do with me, a green young man
Who fails to consider the
Flim and flam of the world, since
Things have been easy for me;
I stare hard at his face, a stare
That deflects off his brow;
I'm sure he's unaware of his
Dark, watery eyes, that
Glance in different directions,
And his slow, unwelcome twitches,
Fail to pass.
I listen, nod,
Listen, open, till I cling to his pale,
Beige T-shirt, yelling,
Yelling in his ears, that hang
With heavy lobes, but he's still telling
His joke, so I ask why
He's so unhappy, to which he replies . . .
But I don't care anymore, cause
He took too damn long, and from
Under my seat, I pull out the
Mirror I've been saving; I'm laughing,
Laughing loud, the blood rushing from his face
To mine, as he grows small,
A spot in my brain, something
That may be squeezed out, like a
Watermelon seed between
Two fingers.
Pop takes another shot, neat,
Points out the same amber
Stain on his shorts that I've got on mine and
Makes me smell his smell, coming
From me; he switches channels, recites an old poem
He wrote before his mother died,
Stands, shouts, and asks
For a hug, as I shink, my
Arms barely reaching around
His thick, oily neck, and his broad back; 'cause
I see my face, framed within
Pop's black-framed glasses
And know he's laughing too.
GUS: the contents of his Rat brain even then were as foul as the content of his Rat policies and deceits.
in his ring of hell i hope he has to spend eternity with John Kerry and his despicable vampire bride "Tuh-Ray-za" Heinz the Tides turner. Such an interesting duo.
I've still got my red shoes. Palin was like a jolt of electricity in the McCain campaign, which he lost all on his own when he, himself, suspended his campaign because he felt his place was in the Senate. A majority of Americans agreed.
I date McCain's decline from his lost Presidential bids. Something happens to a lot of men (and a woman!) when they run for President and lose. Their ambitions are sent into overdrive, as are their egos, and they are never the same again. It's like they don't think they've lost, they think the Presidency has been stolen from them in some fashion. I first noticed the phenom after the hat that Jesse Jackson tried to throw in the ring was handed back to him. I had a great deal of respect for him in the early years, but after catching the presidential bug, he went power mad in an ugly fashion.

It's interesting to learn that algorithms, alone, will not be the smoking guns that people are looking for, but I'm encouraged to think that the smoking part will actually be something that the rest of us can understand!

Rising uranium prices since 2001 have increased interest in uranium mining in Arizona, Colorado, Texas and Utah. The states with the largest known uranium ore reserves (not counting byproduct uranium from phosphate) are (in order) Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado.
Historically, U.S. owners and operators have purchased most of their uranium from foreign countries. In 2012, 84% of foreign-supplied uranium came from Canada, Russia, Australia, Kazakhstan, and Namibia. The rest came from Uzbekistan, Niger, South Africa, Brazil, China, Malawi, and Ukraine.

Points out the same amber
Stain on his shorts that I've got on mine and
Makes me smell his smell, coming
From me; he switches channels, recites an old poem
He wrote before his mother died,
Stands, shouts, and asks
For a hug, as I shink, my
Arms barely reaching around
His thick, oily neck, and his broad back; 'cause
I see my face, framed within
Pop's black-framed glasses
And know he's laughing too.

The horde really hits it out of the park 're maverick last gesture.
In fairness the topic is 100% in their wheelhouse. Even so, I don't think even Bonds leaned into one that hard.

Frau:

Kevin Stitt ran a great winning campaign against a very tough opponent in Oklahoma. Kevin is a very successful businessman who will be a fantastic Governor. He is strong on Crime & Borders, the 2nd Amendment, & loves our Military & Vets. He has my complete and total Endorsement!

sure, why not give Mueller all the time he wants. People who kill babies and train kids in a desert campground go free after two weeks, but Manafort can rot in jail.

Congratulations Capt'n, you're wife must be a Saint!
Last night on Hannity, Victoria Toensing had some very interesting and relevant questions about Huber. FF to 15:20

And isn't it interesting that Mueller, Rosenstein and Huber, all three steering these investigations, have a common denominator in U1

If Huber's a good guy, why hasn't he interviewed Toensing's client?

Davod - I believe those are the clothes she brought from Alaska. Later, she was made more *presentable* for the election hoopla--and then criticized for the expense.
Check out the flip flops in her hand in the photo.

Human sacrifice at Great Wall of China:
An enormous walled settlement topped with a stepped pyramid was recently found in China at a site called Shimao, and was originally mistaken for part of the infamous Great Wall. The massive pyramid, totaling eleven separate platforms, was just one feature of this Bronze Age site that was built on at least six pits full of decapitated human heads which served as a building sacrifice.

henry & Extraneus:
Thanks for the info on algorithms (which, like so many others, I tend to regard as a kind of inscrutable magical thinking.) It's interesting to learn that algorithms, alone, will not be the smoking guns that people are looking for, but I'm encouraged to think that the smoking part will actually be something that the rest of us can understand!

What a difference a year makes.
Rocco "Another more intriguing explanation is that Mr. Sessions needs someone who knows Utah. One part of Mr. Huber’s mandate, as outlined in the GOP letter, is the “purchase of Uranium One by the company Rosatom, whether the approval of the sale was connected to any donations to the Clinton Foundation, and what role Secretary Clinton played in the approval of the sale."
By now it is far far safer to assume Huber is not doing anything at all other than supply believers with more "what if" speculations...
How long ago was U1 and what was the Statute of Limitations on any crimes that might have been involved?
Thought so.

I must confess. Anytime Mrs. Palin was shown wearing red high heels, stilleto or otherwise, i was always reminded of that ol Randy Newman tune: "You Can Leave Your Hat On."

He would have been a terrible president.
Amen to this. We'd surely be in the JEF's second term now if the old coot had won with an even more rudderless than usual GOP.

US is 9th (2016) top uranium producing nation.
