I always assume that they've got a whole collection of (shifting) inter-related algorithms which they apply to FB content to examine and distill out all sorts of different information. The idea that the FB algorithm will be revealed seems sort of like thinking that there's gold-at the end of the rainbow to be found.

JM H, the algorithm isn't even interesting per se: any Machine Learning algorithm is a jumble of statistics on thousands of variables which cannot be sorted out. The key is the "training set(s)" -- the data used to score the algorithm and tune it. This is especially true on classification algorithms (good vs bad). That part requires intent. That part humans can understand, in fact can easily understand.
