That's how I read the article, jmh. Mawkish and tinsely.

Clarice Feldman

Nytol.

Captain Hate

It's like a really bad movie. Oddly enough, I have only found pictures of Cindy McCain with the wreath, none of the casket rolling by, perhaps because it's so unbelievably tacky.

When I was watching a clip of Alysin Camerota trying to get John Sununu to say something bad about DJT, which he pointedly refused to do, she made an odd statement that (paraphrasing) every President since George Washington has made a statement honoring someone like him (McCain). And I wondered what "someone like him" meant. Did it mean former POWs? In that case I think it's clear that, at most, from Truman on forward, there was nothing more than a Presidential group proclamation honoring their sacrifice. If she meant dead politicians I'm sure more than a few left this earth with no recognition from the President.

So MOAR FAKE NEWS!

Copied from Instapundit

"As Judge wrote, “Some of the new jazz was undeniably brilliant, and many of the bebop and hard bop recordings that have been remastered and reissued only seem to acquire more appeal with age,” but the urge to go further and further out also risks dramatically shrinking an audience that, ultimately, wants to be entertained. Judge notes that “The unflinching critic Stanley Crouch tells a funny story about Ellington that sums up the problems jazz has had finding an audience since the bebop revolution: in the 60s, bassist Charles Mingus suggested to Ellington that they make an ‘avant-garde’ record together, employing some of the chaotic elements then popular in the free-jazz movement. Ellington replied that he had no desire to take jazz that far back.”

I've been a jazz fan since my late teen years. Went to the Metropolitan Opera House for a be-bop all-star event in he late 80's. It was so freaking discordant that I walked out half way through the show. I had thought I liked be-bop. I did. I just realized that the jazz stations I listened had never played that much back to back be-bop.

I think it might also have been that some of the bands were used to playing with each other, but the all-star combos weren't.

If someone suggests I'm wrong and they are correct, I apologize.
If they aren't, I don't apologize.
I never implied malice on your part so I don't need to apologize for something I didn't do.
Nor did I fault your logic in any way or even your motives. I have no idea what your motives are and logic didn't enter into your comment. I simply pointed out that assuming TomR spent a whole football game stewing on his reply to GUS was less than charitable in the sense that you seemed to be making a less than favorable assumption about Tom. Since you later said you did, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to apologize for...agreeing with you?

You might note on the credit side of my ledger that I'm not asking you to apologize for telling me to "eat shit" for something you accused me of doing that I didn't.

--i think it's fairly obvious to most that jim-nj has not personally "attacked" you.--

Jim claimed Tom had been stewing on his reply for hours, when such a claim didn't really make sense nor was knowable. Don't know if it amounted to an "attack" but didn't seem particularly charitable.
---------
I've already explained that I didn't realize that Tom R was off-line. And I apologized when I caught up with the thread. You had already heard Tom R say he was offline. To state the above is all conjecture on your part. You only had half the story. "when such a claim didn't really make sense nor was knowable," I didn't see you make that satement before Tom R posted. Beacause of the time in between GUS and Tom R posts. It made perfect sense for me at the time. I stand corrected, but you had no need to butt in or to question my thought process. You know I post late and would have addressed Tom R directly. So this was a cheap shot at my expense, you didn't wait for me to respond. So I'm not "charitable," neither are you here. I made a false assertion and apologized. You made a false assertion above yet feel no need to apologize for that. You question my thinking and motivation before I even get he chance to post for my self

Let me know if the participants get over themselves.--

That was not directed at you. I was referring mainly to Tom, GUS and Eye Doctor, who I block.

--You made a false assertion above yet feel no need to apologize for that.--

What false assertion? It didn't make sense to me that you would assume he had been stewing on a reply and as you yourself note, it wasn't knowable. Everyone here has a real life outside JOM [at least I hope they do] so the assumption he had seen the comment and had been mulling a response over all that time seemed like a not particularly sound one.

I noted "attack" sounded like hyperbole but also noted using the word "stewed" in the context of his reply hours later does not sound particularly charitable. Stew; "a state of great anxiety or agitation". That seems like a fairly negative connotation. In any event, that is my opinion and so cannot be a false assertion.
I have no clue and made not the slightest implication about your motives. I thought you were just being a little snarky; why I had no idea.

You're seemingly mad about the opinion I formed of the words you wrote. I'm not alone in that opinion; Tom shared it. Apparently you did also because you apologized for it.
And I'm not aware of any proscription about making observations on other people's conversations. It was being asserted by a different third party who injected himself into your and Tom's conversation that Tom was upset with your comment without reason. I thought and still think he did have a reason to, even though your comment didn't amount to a personal attack. You did not object to that person involving himself in the conversation.
It is particularly ironic for you to tell me I had no reason to "butt in" to a conversation that you yourself had butted into between two other people.

I'm being as dispassionate and objective as I can and still don't see what it is I'm supposed to apologize for.
I can apologize for believing that when you said Tom stewed for hours about his reply, it was a not particularly favorable or justified comment, but it would not be a genuine apology because it was not a favorable or justified comment.

I don't have anything against you and always enjoy your comments and links and respect immensely your sharing of your personal story. But I'm not going to be buffaloed into making an insincere apology because I noted a seemingly snarky comment was seemingly snarky.
I am sorry you're upset about my comment but I don't think your upset is justified because I still think my comment was accurate. In my opinion, assuming Tom stewed on a reply for hours was snarky and therefore less than charitable. You may have not intended it that way, but it is the way I took it, and not insignificantly, the way Tom did too.
In any event, you made what I consider a minor comment about a petty argument other people were having and I made a minor comment expressing my opinion about yours. I'm not investing anymore time or my meager grey cells on it. It shouldn't matter to either one of us, IMO.

Yeah, I've been trying to figure this out too. When Lavrov this week started talking about eliminating people in Idlib and warning that the rebels would launch gas attacks to make it look like the Syrians had done it. He was trying to warn away the US from retaliatory strikes. The Russian naval build up in the Mediterranean also seemed o indicate that something was very imminent.

Yet I read the story I posted above that Turkey has its own troops in Idlib, and has had them there for sometime.

So now we assume that there has to be some kind of coordination among Syria, Turkey, Russia and Iran before the attack starts. And the story above points to a Sept. 7 meeting among Iran, Russia and Turkey.

Idlib is full of people who fled from elsewhere in Syria. Every time Syria made a deal with some warring group to abandon a position, they offered them free, protected, migration to Idlib.

I have no idea how many anti-Syrian factions are in Idlib and whether they have hooked up with each other or not.

I presume, with the whole world watching, that the Turks will be asked to disarm some groups. Maybe even bargain for a safe corridor for non-combatants. The most militant groups in Idlib won't let them go.

Whatever, i's going to be a bloodbath.

jim nj

For some reason I can't fathom "t"s don't always go in where I want them.

jim nj

Another Bob,

Another thing to consider is what the US intends to do with its territorial possessions in Syria. Ditto, for the Kurds.

The Kurds and Free Syrian Forces hold territory. That's another battle. The US could officially abandon them while covertly supporting them.

The US holds territory in the quest to eliminate ISIS. We've degraded them big time, but they still hold a pocket of territory that we are still focused on.

Would we join with the Israelis to eliminate Hezbollah and Iranian forces?

Lots of questions still up in the air.

Oh, and here's another one. Where are the Syrian air force assets based? On Syrian bases or Russian ones?

Or another, if Russian and Syrian air assets are focused on north Syria what do the Israelis do in south Syria in the interim?

I presume a lot of people on all sides, including the US, are war-gaming this. Anything can happen.

jim nj

And think of the diplomatic and military messages the US is no doubt delivering.

If Syrian air assets are based on Russian airbases does that make the entire airbase a legitimate target? And we don't need to be overly careful in our bombing attack. Does that mean that we need to take out or disrupt the Russian air defense grid to avoid casualties on our side? And we accidentally hit every Russian plane in the meantime.

How ballsy do we want to get? Risk a war with Russia after taking out a good portion of their air force in Syria and a good portion of their naval assets off the coast.

I don't see that as being on the table, so to speak, but in a coordinated attack how long would that take?

Hours I think.

jim nj

Further on Idlib, there are groups like ISIS and Al-Queada affiliates that we wouldn't mind disappearing.

Our style of fighting them wouldn't take out the whole population though. We'd use special forces and intelligence gathering to pinpoint them.

Does Syria, or the Russians, lack this capability? Or are they just better at brute force?

It makes a mockery of the MSMs coverage of the Yemen conflict. A bus bombed my mistake vs. a hospital deliberately bombed in Syria.

jim nj

Enough on Idlib. I see no good outcome.

No, because they don't want any of the wounded to get treatment.

It was not part of their blood,
It came to them very late,
With long arrears to make good,
When the Saxon began to hate.

They were not easily moved,
They were icy -- willing to wait
Till every count should be proved,
Ere the Saxon began to hate.

Their voices were even and low.
Their eyes were level and straight.
There was neither sign nor show
When the Saxon began to hate.

It was not preached to the crowd.
It was not taught by the state.
No man spoke it aloud
When the Saxon began to hate.

It was not suddently bred.
It will not swiftly abate.
